In the 21st century we have a communication problem because the
message we want to pass on from Jesus relies so heavily on the
biblical view of the world and the universe - flat earth with
heaven above (like a court ruled by an emperor-like deity) and
hell below (ruled by satan). This problem is compounded by
church teaching that the bible is 'inspired' and that any
watering down of or deviation from its literal interpretation is
dangerous and potentially heretical.
Yet we now know that the biblical cosmology, like the creation
myths in Genesis, is not literally true and is at best
metaphorical. If we believe that Jesus' message conveys
something of universal truth packaged (as it were) in the
theology and scientific understanding of his time, how do we
repackage it in a way that is compatible with ways of thinking
of our own age? In particular, if God is not a man-like being
living at a location called heaven, how are we to re-interpret
the God-as-loving-father part of the gospel message in a way
that has some meaning today?
If our message to catechumens is that to receive the 'gift of
faith' they must ignore scientific progress live their
faith-life in one realm and their everyday life in another, then
faith and reality are going to drift further and further apart
and the Good News will fall down the black hole between the two.
