       Darker than Black

       This is one of the few series that was an anime first and
       actually the manga is an alternate universe-ish situation.
       Ten years prior to the series start two mysterious areas
       appeared in the world. One is known as Hell's Gate located in
       Tokyo, Japan and the other is known as Heaven's Gate located in
       South America. With the appearance of these two areas, the
       landscape surrounding it and the sky itself were altered. The
       sky now only possesses 'false stars' (each with their own code)
       with each star corresponding to a person holding superhuman
       abilities. These people are known as 'Contractors' because they
       must 'pay the price' for their powers and because they rely only
       on rationale and logic--making them secret weapons of every
       government and organization in the world--especially a
       superpower called the Syndicate. The series revolves around a
       Contractor with the code, BK-201, but is known to many as the
       Black Reaper and 'Hei' to those that work with him. Hei works
       under the Syndicate as a spy and assassin, but considered
       strange because he exemplifies "uncontractor-like" behavior.
       Only 24 episodes long with a sequel called Darker than Black:
       Ryuusei no Gemini, it is one of my favorites since it actually
       has realistic endings to their episodes.
