Burning out/motivation
By: PaintingLemming Date: September 25, 2018, 2:34 pm

Hi all,
I started my first entry for Golden Demon about a month ago, a
Redemptor Dreadnought, painting almost every day and mostly the
same colour/process. I've done local competition pieces and
warhammer world event bits but nothing on the level of GD so I'm
pushing myself in terms of techniques.
It's at the point where I've made good progress and am actually
somewhat happy with what I've achieved but I'm struggling to
find the motivation to continue painting at the same standard I
have been thus far.
What do you guys do to renew motivation in the middle of a
project?

I've not taken on a big project myself yet, but from watching
Miniac on youtube they suggest doing other projects as well so
your not doing the same colour or process to much and getting
bored of doing it.
Perhaps time to paint a space marine or a nurgle daemon ::)

Yeah, I always do a couple (read: maybe five or six) projects at
the same time, so as soon as I feel like I'm just pushing
through and not being inspired enough to do my absolute best I
put that project aside and pick up a different one to work on
for a while.

Funny, i do the opposite. If I put a project aside it usually
ends up on a shelf not ever to be seen at again. I strictly try
to push it until the mini is done before starting new projects

Well to be honest I do the exact same thing!
At the moment I'm working on 3 projects simultaneously and mix
them all the time, just paint the one I want and when I feel
bored or not motivated - I just switch to one of the other two!
It's alright to feel burned out and not really that motivated.
Just find a way to continue and you will become a bigger painter
because you can motivate yourself.
For example, before the Golden Demon in February this year I had
only a few days to paint 10 Goliath Gangers but I knew that I
absolutely have to and I forced myself, painted after work till
3-4 in the morning and the result wasnt disappointing at all as
I've come away with a Gold Demon :)
Keep on working mate and show us your results in the WIP
section!
Best regards,
Mamikon

This is my first entry too. I've spent 4 weeks concentrating
purely on my duel. Due to having a small human tearing round the
house during daylight hours, once she's asleep, I only get 2
hours a night and maybe a little more on a weekend to paint. I
painted each area until done without really painting other areas
at the same time. I just toughed it out.. It was a long process,
but once you start getting to final highlights you start to feel
good about it. Now it's on to my other entries.

Well, the comforting thing (sort of) is that I've not met
anyone's who doesn't suffer from this from time to time. I get
it a lot, most often straight after a competition but also at
random points during a project. As has already been mentioned,
just take a break. Perhaps give yourself a few days to catch up
on the film you keep meaning to watch, or an Xbox binge etc.
Dont even look at the model during that time but set a date to
go back and hopefully start again. You may even get twitchy
before that time. But, as has also been said, paint something
else. I find that painting some table top stuff helps or just
experimenting on a non competition model. If you are really keen
to get that model ready for the competition the time pressure
will soon drive you on.

Here's an idea to keep you motivated: think about that precious
Golden Demon you can win.
Do you wants it, do you needs it?
That's me before every competition:
