We discuss ideas when the folks we are discussing them with
agree with us. Apparently that is the modern modified version
for web forums? I'm good to go with the original Socrates quote
of course, but most folks don't appear to agree with him.

That might fall into the previous person you quoted with "label
first and only talk with those who agree with you". In the last
day or two on here, there are different opinions on every issue;
Harley fat boy conspiracy, ww3 probability and forced injecting.
Describing all that as only discussing with those in agreement
on forums seems to me like labelling first. Then if I hadn't
taken the time to point this out, I would be assumed to be in
agreement, as everyone who has not done surely must be.

Natural Selection doesn't work to select against stupiidity.
All it works for is to select for traits that help a given
population reproduce during their reproductive years.
As a population, mostly you do not need smart people. Bee Hives
have only one Queen; packs of wolves have one alpha male, etc.
All the rest are drone workers.
Animals don't think about the future, and neither do people.
They don't worry about whether the next generation will have
enough to eat as long aas they do. The Reindeer of St.
Matthew's Island did't think, "Hey if we eat up all the grass,
there won't be enough for all the baby Reindeer's next year.
People do not stop reproducing either, until the resources star
running out.
The only thing that keeps a species population in check are
Predators. The Reindeer on SMI had none, so the population
ballooned until the food ran out, then it crashed.
Homo Saps evolved to be the Top of the Food Chain all time
Champion. There are only two predators succesful battling with
Homo Sap. Microbes and other Homo Saps.
Withe the development of antibiotics, Homo Sap briefly battled
down the microbes, but they are staging a comeback as new
anti-biotic resistant microbes evolve. They evolve a whole lot
faster than Homo Sap does.
With plentiful resources, Homo Sap doesn't predate on each other
that much. When the resources grow thin though, they go at it
BIG TIME! We call that part of the Predator-Prey cycle War.
So you get the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse, War, Famine,
Pestilence, followed by the one riding the Pale Horse named
Death.
