The CRUNCH comes when the price is too high for more than half
the population can afford to eat. Then you get a crash.

[/quote]my understanding is that most soybeans are eaten by
livestock. Meat consumption in china went up with prosperity so
should go down in a crunch. People turn to cheaper alternatives
like... soybeans directly. Add that to the predictions of
population growth declining or even going negative and it's just
       fluctuation.

It's an aggregate number. Soybeans are at the bottom, but as
those prices rise, so rise the prices at the top of the food
chain. At some point you hit a level at which more than half
the population cannot afford to eat. That point has already
been passed in quite a few places. Afghanistan, Somalia etc.
Coming soon to a theater near you.

Oh, currently I can afford to eat beef fillets. lol. But tons
of people in India can't afford pork, and that country is still
relatively OK. Syrians and Libyans really have trouble
affording their food. Collapse works its way inward from the
periphery of the civilization to the center. Here in the FSoA,
we are in the Belly of the Beast.
