Mass floods hit China’s coal hub, threatening power supplies

       By Lily Kuo
  HTML https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/china-floods-climate-coal-power/2021/10/11/c20a7d2e-2a6a-11ec-b17d-985c186de338_story.html

China’s largest coal-producing region was hit by severe
flooding, threatening the country’s already strained power
supply and displacing more than 120,000 people as residents
called for help from other regions.

Officials in the northern Chinese province of Shanxi said on
Sunday that more than 1.75 million people in 11 cities across
the province had been affected, with at least 17,000 homes
collapsing and almost 200,000 hectares of land destroyed. At
least six people have died, according to authorities.

Landslides and flooding in neighboring Shaanxi province had
displaced at least 70,000 people and killed 12.

The rains, which started in late September, had largely subsided
on Sunday but were still causing landslides and flooding as
officials warned residents, factories, schools and mines to stay
on alert. Videos from Shanxi showed submerged villages, flooded
farmland, drowned livestock and residents evacuating their homes
with their belongings in plastic bags.

“Our team was evacuating villagers day and night. The whole
village was flooded, with water levels as high as three meters,”
said Pao Hua-an, head of Jingping village, who said they were
able to move all 1,300 residents out.

Volunteers were updating a running list of more than 50 areas in
need of help. In Yuncheng village, trapped residents waiting for
rescue had built their own dam, guarding it in shifts.

The flooding marks the latest natural disaster in China after
record rains over the summer in Henan province left more than
300 dead, underlining the country’s vulnerability to extreme
weather events linked to climate change.

Ahead of a key climate summit in November, China, the world’s
largest contributor of carbon emissions, is expected to release
details of its plans to tackle climate change possibly this
       week.

The rains come as the country is grappling with power shortages
caused in part by the rising costs of coal, the main source of
electricity in China. As of Friday, 60 of Shanxi’s coal mines
had suspended operations and 372 other mines had also halted
work, according to province’s emergency management department.

Local officials are under pressure to stabilize coal supplies.
Shanxi province produced 1.06 billion tons of coal in 2020, more
than a quarter of the country’s total. On Sunday, Shanxi’s vice
governor, Wang Yixin, called on the province’s state-owned
companies to “ensure energy security” and guarantee a stable
coal supply “without regard to conditions.”

Officials also warned of the risk to the province’s many
cultural relics. Last week, the walls around Pingyao, a town
known for architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties,
partially collapsed. Footage online showed collapsed railways
       and roads.

On Weibo, some commentators complained that the floods had not
garnered attention earlier because small towns and rural areas
had been hit first. One said, “the people of Shanxi are
heartbroken. We are the only ones who are paying attention to
       our hometown.”
Lyric Li in Seoul and Alicia Chen in Taipei contributed to this
       report.

Are you implying that ChiComs without electricity because of
flooding means collapse? Sort of like south Louisiana a month
       ago?
Dunno Dig, RE tried this one out over the weekend with the
Lebanese being out of power. Apparently the tourists may have
been concerned? For 24 hours anyway, until someone paid the fuel
       bill and presto...collapse averted.
       [/quote]
First of all, BJ, I am not trying to convince you of anything.
You are not here to be convinced anyway, and I am not nearly as
expert on these subjects as others who comment here. I expect
you to be skeptical about collapse until the roof falls on your
head. (Don't want to see that happen to you or anyone - just
seems to be where you are headed.) RE can take care of himself,
but I gotta say he isn't trying anything. He is posting
material that he feels proves his point and will advance the
conversation. Of course, you are free to draw different
conclusions than RE, or me, or anyone. But this ain't some
scheme to cheat the refs. No one is trying to get something
over on anyone as far as I can tell.
The truth is playing out and will surely continue to do so. The
pace of collapse is accelerating. Unfortunately for those who
will not or cannot accept the obvious trend, collapse isn't
going to wait for those folks to catch up.
No tree grows to the sky. There is a growth and decay cycle to
everything. A very resilient system could withstand most of
these shocks and pull through. As you like to point out, the
system has been resilient up until now. Remarkably so. However
the flaws are ever more obvious and dangerous, and the risks and
costs of failure ever more consequential. For now the system is
on it's feet -but wobbling. It is obviously bleeding and on the
ropes. The champ is going down. This round or the next, it's
going down. Just one more serious right hook to the gut.
The accumulated stress on all the vital systems really is
unprecedented. One of the very likely results we don't talk
about much here is war. Big war. I doubt however, that would
       influence your view.
When you and Elon get to Mars please send me a postcard.
