A 2014 book I picked up at an airport in HK is "the end of cheap
china". Average factory wage was about 250$ / week then, with
wage inflation of about 5% year, so probably 350$ / week now.
I've heard from Germans their rate of factory pay is about 700$
/ week full time and retail work, about 500$. It's the rural
areas that are dirt poor in China.

Electrification
By: Nearings fault Date: January 2, 2022, 10:45 am

This article touches on a lot of material I have been digesting
lately.
-Efficiency gains
-heat pumps
-a beefed up modernized electrical grid
-de gassing housing
-induction cooking
Some of it is rosy but mostly it lays out a vision and steps to
get there. You can object to the vision maybe but it at least
presents one. It talks about "cascadia" which is
Washington/Oregon/British Columbia but the insights apply to
most of North America. The solutions would have to be different
for the very densely populated eastern regions but still
relevant...

My first thought after seeing heat pumps listed was "will it
work in Canada" then I saw the linked article talking about a
house in Alaska using a heat pump to warm the house. Wow!! And
to think i hadn't even heard of those things up until recently.
heat pump in the last 10 years have gained a lot of cold
weather street cred. Better refrigerants, higher pressures and
better design have made them viable for most winter uses. Our
new house will be mostly heat pump heated except in the coldest
weather where an electric backup heater kicks on.

That is very neat to hear. I'm excited to hear about your house
when it's all finished. I will definitely be borrowing ideas
from you!
it should be cool. I'm in talks with an energy advisor
firm to get the house certified both as energy star rated and
net zero ready, get my accreditation as a energy star rated
builder and as an accredited energy advisor... Keeps the brain
tuned to give it challenges.

Good thinking. I bet more folks will be thinking that way as
prices for a lot of stuff continue to climb, energy included.
Nice work setting the example.

You see an upside? The premise of this article is quit smoking
the grass and export the gas. Export American gas as much as
possible to fuck Putin's ass gas.
God bless American not.
