The Population of Alaska is Shrinking

I had no idea until I saw an article that said the only place
with more people leaving than Illinois, was Alaska. I get why
people might leave Illinois, but Alaska seems like a nice place
to stay.....not sure what’s going on. You gotta love the
government explanation, which was (and I quote):
[I]The department (Alaska Dept. of Labor and Workforce
Development) said the main reason the population continues to
fall is more people are leaving the state than are moving to
Alaska.[/i]
Thank you Captain Obvious. (I suppose it could have been that
people were getting lost in snowstorms or getting eaten by
bears.)

I take it the US doesn't decide where immigrants get to go, as
part of visa conditions.
4 years in a row, since 2017 eh. RE did u lose the e-rection
when trump won the e-lection? Get back to work

The only reason why people live in Alaska is to make bigger
money than in the lower 48. Cost of living is much higher.
However, the high paying jobs are disappearing. So they leave.
They would rather be unemployed in a warm climate than a cold
one.

High paying jobs meaning oil and gas jobs?
COVID put a hickey on tourism, but it should come back. The
missus wanted me to tell you how much she enjoyed the time we
spent with you exploring. Both of us would like to come back.
I’m not kidding myself that it’s likely I’d live there...but
like a few other places I could name....I could dream about a
nice sabbatical year spent in your neck of the woods.

The slope is of course in terminal decline, although the layoffs
have not been huge as of yet,. The ancillary support economy
has been hit hard though, tourism and hospitality industries
especially. Chinese demand for mining products also down. With
a small population medical people have a smaller number to draw
from, which is magnified in a population decline. I am not
expecting recovery anytime soon.

Already committed to a five day trip to Chicago and back in
August, pulling my flatbed trailer....to move my son and all his
accumulated wood-working equipment back here. A U-Haul from
there to here is over $5K right now , so many people are bailing
out of Illinois. Not exactly looking forward to that. Moving you
would be a lot easier.
