In the Ring of Energy Politics
By: RE Date: July 1, 2022, 6:37 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Well sports fans, a spot opened up on the MEA Board of
Directors, and I applied for it. ;D MEA is the Matanuska
Electric Association, the cooperative which supplies electricity
to the entire valley. I have no idea what my chances are of
even being considered for the position, much less actually
getting it.
Here is my Bio included with the application:
I was educated in New York at Stuyvesant HS for Science &
Mathematics, Columbia University, SUNY Stonybrook & Queens
Colllege of CUNY. My undergraduate degree was co-major in
Biochemistry & Psychology, my graduate study was in Secondary
Science Education. I was certified in New York to teach
Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics through the AP level.
I came to Alaska in February of 2007 to pursue another career
and life long passion, Athletics. I was Head Coach & Program
Director for Denali Gymnastics in Wasilla, and subsequent to
that at Excel Gymnastics in Palmer. My Teams & individual
gymnasts were highly successful, winning many State & Regional
championships. I pursued this until 2015 when I became disabled
due to a work accident.
I have been deeply interested in the issues surrounding energy
that face us as we move forward into a challenging future. I am
familiar with all forms of electric power generation including
thermal sources like Coal, Oil, Natural Gas & Nuclear as well as
Renewables like Solar PV, Wind, Hydro & Geothermal. I am also
familiar with the transmission problems we face with our
infrastructure in bringing electricity to many small
communities.
I believe I can bring a fresh perspective as well as extensive
knowledge to MEA to successfully negotiate the difficult times
we face, now and moving forward into the future. I thank you
for your consideration.
Wish me luck!

Is there anything we can do - like letters of recommendation?

Perhaps moving forward in the process. I have already cleared
the first hurdle and been contacted and told my application
appears complete and is being forwarded to the Board for review.
I was told I will be contacted by the board in a few weeks to
schedule an interview.
I really wish I had some idea who else applies for such a
position and how many other candidates there are. The
application process closes July 5th. My sense is being somewhat
familiar with Valley Politics that these appointments are highly
political and it "ain't what you know but who you know". If
that is true, my chances would be slim and none. Also, I
suspect there are numerous retired Energy Industry executives
who might apply for the spot.
However, having nothing better to do with my time, I figured I
would give it a shot.

Why the hell not, it would be interesting experience if nothing
else. I'm thinking the far north frontier people might be some
of the only ones amenable to accepting keeping 5$ worth of
candles or even a small generator for emergency isn't
unreasonable. Best luck!

RE makes the Final Four
By: RE Date: July 14, 2022, 4:22 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Well Sportsfans, somewhat unbelievably, I am one of the Final
Four candidates for the position of Director of the Susitna East
territory of MEA, the Electricity provider for the entire Mat-Su
Valley. My Interview with the Board of Directors and the CEO
comes in 2 weeks. There are 6 other Directors who will be
grilling me as well.
My chances of getting to this level of the competition were
actually better than I initially estimated. In order to be
eligible at all, you have to be both a Resident of the Susitna
East District as well as a member in good standing (you pay your
bills! lol) of the Cooperative. I qualify with 15 years of
membership and a perfect payment history. I have never even
been late on a single payment. How many people actually LIVE in
my neighborhood? 10,000 is a reasonable estimate I think. The
number that meet the other restrictions and also might even
apply is much smaller than that. So anyhow, I face 3 other
competitors now for the position. I still expect to lose
However, I have one VERY Big Advantage. I am a CRIPPLE! lol.
Having a Disabled Person on the BoD will make them look very
good, and I can serve as a Jerry Lewis Poster Child showing they
CARE about Senior, Disabled, Low & Fixed Income Consumers of
Electricity. Unfortunately, I am not also Black & Female, but
what can you do? lol. You don't GET more obviously Disabled
than sitting in a Wheelchair with One Leg in every Newz Photo.
lol.
What's the Over-Under? The Betting is now OPEN!

The future has been, is, and always will be, doom. Such is the
cycle of life, with only one real guarentee to it...it ends.
Doing good along the way for others is a noble endeavor. i hope
RE gets the gig!
