Heir Apparent Under Controversy Following Iridar Comments
The 31-year-old Robert de Rouenne, Count of Cabourg and heir
apparent to the Duchy, was embroiled in minor controversy this
week following critical comments on the general strike in the
Iridar Republic. Since the end of the Great War, Duke Ranulf III
has carefully maintained a policy of quietude toward the
Republic, a stance that has alienated some members of the public
and the nobility. Robert, who served as a commander on the
northern front, has until this point kept his lips sealed on the
subject until now. When news arrived of the general strike in
Iridar, however, the prince spoke more freely. "It is fitting,"
he said when questioned at his manor, "that a state created by
revolutionaries should feel the people turn against them. I
welcome the irony of their striking." This statement represents
a split with the current official dynastic policy on Iridar,
though the Duke has not issued any statement or reprimand
against his son.

Preparations Begin for International Dinner
The city government and police forces of Rouenne have begun to
prepare to receive a number of international diplomats for a
dinner at the Duke's palace. Security will be heightened in the
weeks before the event, say top police and palatial officials,
but it is nothing that the average citizen should have to worry
about. In addition, a number of roads leading from the city
docks to the palace will be closed to the general public on the
evening of the dinner. A few citizens residing in the city have
expressed concern over the changes to their daily routes to
work, while others have criticized the reception of diplomats
from the Iridar Republic. "We didn't fight a war for the Duke to
turn around and dine with southerners," one anonymous citizen
complained.

Significant Metal Deposits Found in Central Rhenania
Government-sponsored mineral prospecting groups have announced
the discovery of an abundance of rare earth metals at a site in
central Rhenania. These sites have since been claimed by a
combination of government-sponsored companies and private
corporations. It is expected that in the next few years a number
of mines will be established to retrieve these valuable minerals
from the earth. Interestingly, reports by
natural-resource-extraction companies also indicate growth in
the mining of clay deposits at sits on the lake cliffs, which
has drawn criticism from environmental groups.

Chaos Erupts at International Dinner
At today's international dinner and diplomatic conference in
Rouenne, the situation took a turn for the worse as two separate
and isolated episodes of violence occurred. In the first, a ship
from the Iridar Republic arrived at the palatial docks, and was
quickly revealed to have suffered a mutiny over the course of
the trip. The mutineers, claiming to be representatives of the
new workers' revolutionary state in Iridar, held the diplomat
onboard bound and gagged and demanded entry into the event. When
rebuked, they attempted to flee, ramming and firing upon a
Rhenanian patrol ship, an action which resulted in the deaths of
six Rhenanian sailors. The mutineers' ship was run aground on
the city beach, and after a short standoff the mutineers were
persuaded to throw down their weapons in exchange for
extradition back to their home state. The diplomat has been
rescued and granted asylum in the Ducal Palace.
In the second incident, a diplomat from Erkettun and one of his
aides attempted to fire upon an envoy from the Socialist
Republic of Ryudinia, as well as several palace guards. The aide
was shot dead before he could fire his weapon, while the
diplomat has been arrested and is expected to see trial by the
Rhenanian ducal court for attempted murder.
In light of both of these events, the dinner was forced to come
to an abrupt end, and those diplomats in attendance have been
offered lodging within the city until such time as they can
return to their home nations.

Former Erkettuni Diplomat Sentenced to Life Imprisonment
Today, following a lengthy set of trials and appeals open to the
public, the disgraced Erkettuni diplomat and attempted murderer
Jimbo Rakia was conclusively sentenced by the Rhenanian High
Court to life imprisonment in the nation's highest-security
prison at Montvilliers. Rakia was arrested at the Ducal Palace
following his attempted assassination of a representative from
the Socialist Republic of Ryudinia at Rouenne's international
diplomatic dinner.
The trial process was conducted by Rhenanian authorities with
the assent of the government of Erkettun, who had initially
petitioned for the former diplomat's extradition back to his
home state. The other attempted assassin at the event,
an aide to Rakia, was shot and killed during the attempt -- his
body was returned to Erkettun shortly after the event to be
interred at the request of his family.
