General Strike in the Iridar Republic!
DIR By: MysticPing

---------------------------------------------------------
After unsuccessful measures to curb the current hyperinflation
following the Great War with the introduction of a new currency
called the Speciedaler, where 1 new Speciedaler is worth 1
billion old Daler workers have decided to protest rampant
Austerity measures and high unemployment with a general strike.
It is projected that 60% of the countries total labour force
will participate in the strike, with all of the nations bigger
Unions calling for participation. At the front of this operation
is the Industrial Workers of Iridar (IWI).
Current President Khilip Schiede has spoken out against the
planned strikes claiming foreign collusion with unions in the
country and has declared the strike illegal. Khilip has strongly
worded that the safety of any citizen that defies the orders to
not participate cannot be guaranteed.
This had little effect and the General strike started with a
union estimated 17 million workers on strike (the police's more
conservative estimate is 10 million workers). Khilip's statement
has also brought several student associations at major
universities to endorse and participate in the strikes and the
total number of workers on strike are growing every day.
Workers are filling the streets of all major cities, blocking
roads, waving flags and in many cases singing.

As negotiations of lessened austerity measures and more worker
control broke down incidents of armored police clashing with
protesters have started to surface. A incident in the capital
saw armored police open fire into a crowd of workers that got
too close. The ensuing chaos wounded many dozen workers and
police, with 14 dead.
Following this incident students of several major universities
have peacefully taken control of their schools and there are
reports of radical elements of workers seizing control of their
own factories.
With the end of the first week of strikes closing in President
Khilip has threatened to declare a state of emergency if the
workers do not stand down.
Reports claim that Republican Police have raided the
headquarters of the IWI and then prohibited people from entering
or leaving the building. It is unclear at this time if IWI
Chairman Kilbom Strom was present.

After the end of the week saw no progress with negotiations or
worker stand-down president Khilip has declared a state of
emergency, stating:
"The illegal strikes out to sabotage our great nation will do
nothing to pay our war reparations, they will do nothing to
repair our industry and farmland and most importantly what they
will do is leave our troubled nation wide open for foreign
attacks. In a time where we stand weak and divided we need to
accept and embrace hardships, or else there will be no chance
for rebuilding or recovering. I will declare a state or
emergency in Iridar and all citizens are expected to comply with
a temporary curfew for your own safety."
Following the presidents statement many workers who had
participated in the strike by staying home, but not been
protesting have now joined the protests, even as many comply
with the curfew. Workers still out have started to barricade
factories and towns, some reports even claims the workers have
made improvised weapons and acquired old Great War rifles.
Armed police and some parts of the military have entered major
cities as the curfew started but the military turnout is less
than expected, with no comments from Iridar generals or the
Khilip government.
In the midst of the Chaos rumors say Kilbom Strom has reappeared
claiming to have survived a "government assassination attempt".
Kilbom is said to claim the supposed attempt a "A Open
deceleration of war against the Iridar working man by the Khilip
Government". Local IWI unions are now actively encouraging
workers to arm themselves and seize their workplaces. This has
resulted in police declaring open conflict against all IWI
chapters.
With a big country and slow communications the country is
currently in a state of troubled and confused chaos.

Smoke rises in the horizon from several places within the tight
capital as workers arm their barricade. After the end of the 2nd
week of strikes the IWI has taken it up to organize resistance.
Several improvised flags with hanging red cloth poke out from
the structure. The workers go tense as they spot a approaching
military vehicle. The barricade visibly tenses as the armored
car is shown flying a red flag.
A man leaves the vehicle and shouts at the workers:
"Join us comrades! General Rochefort has declared his support to
the workers and plans to surprise the congress, we must be
quick."
The men hastily abandon their barricades and join the growing
convoy of military vehicles.
Similar scenarios are playing out across the country as the
military leadership proclaims their support in the fight against
the Khilip government. There are minor clashes as conservative
members of the Iridar military refuse to cooperate but they look
to be a minority as the the military took the blunt of the war
and then got the worst treatment by the government afterwards.
Many broken promises and pay cuts have created a situation where
the military saw it better to work with the labour movement.
