D&D Adventures

Hi everyone I was just wondering if you would read through this
and tell me how you like it and give me suggestions if you want.
(This is just a start to the story, it will get edited over
time)
Max Harrington is a 12-year-old boy with brown hair and blues
eyes and a tan complexion. He is skinny and about average
height. He is moving to Platteville, Wisconsin in 2018 and Max
just hasn’t seemed like himself lately. He typically chats your
ear off, but not even his mom couldn’t get a peep out of him.
Mostly about losing his friends in Miami where he’s lived his
whole life.
When the moving truck finally pulls up to their new house, he
sees that the windows are broken. Holes in the walls. The paint
is chipping off in chunks. The shutters falling off the hinges,
banging against the side of the house. Just like every other
place he lived in. His family fixes up run-down houses for a
living. They moved the furniture inside and their new neighbor
yells, “You don’t want to live in that old dump!”
Max walks over to the neighbor and asks, “Why is that?”
The neighbor replies, “No family has ever lived there for more
than a few months. Weird things happen there and a child in each
family has disappeared without a trace. Just wait and see.” The
neighbor walks into his house and Max stands there in silence
and sees why it is such a dump.
Max goes around the house and when he goes down to the basement
the last step collapses under his weight and he falls forward
and his head hits a golden twenty-sided die. He stood up and
picked up the die and set it on the table next to him wondering
where it came from and left.
A few weeks later they got unpacked and Max was dreading the
first day of school being on Monday because he was going to be
“the new kid”. As he lay in bed he hears a roar come from the
basement. He doesn’t think anything of it. He hears claws
scraping against the floor. Then three more roars happened even
closer. He sneaks out of bed and hesitantly opens the door a
crack and sees three white, scaly, and winged creatures
searching outside his room. A cold wind drifted through the
house biting into Max’s skin and snow and ice seemed to follow
in the creature's wake. One of the creatures walked over to the
bedroom door and Max could feel it’s cold breath. Then an
earth-shattering roar happens and the creatures retreat back
down to the basement. He gets back in bed and thinks about what
he had just witnessed. He had witnessed three ice dragons in his
mysterious house.
Monday morning while he is getting ready for school he goes down
to the basement and finds the twenty-sided die laying on the
ground across the room. He thought the dragon must have hit it
with its tail. He moves it back onto the table. He finishes
getting ready and walks down the street to the middle school.
Later on in the day, he makes some friends named Mindy Snow,
Ashlynn Phillips, and Will Reynolds. One of his teachers
recommends that he joins an after school activity so he asks
them if they do any after school activities and Mindy says,
“Yes, we play D&D. It’s a game where you can have a character
that is a different race and you get to fight monsters and
dragons, too.” He remembered about the dragons and thought it
might be connected.
“Can I join?” Max says wearily.
“Sure,” Ashlynn answers, Max feels weary inside.
Then, out of the blue Will says, “We can’t play at my house
anymore.”
Mindy asks, “Why?”
“We are redoing the basement.”
Then Max pipes up and says, “We can play at my house. I have the
space.”
“Then that settles that,” Mindy says. “Fill this out by tonight
and we will start playing.” She handed him a D&D form and book.
“I’ll have it done by tonight. See you tonight at six.”
That night, he gets a call from Mindy. Mindy asks, “Where is
your house again?”
“At the corner of North Water Street and Pitt Street, house
number 1900,” Max replied.
Mindy says, “Thank you,” and hangs up.
Two seconds later the doorbell rings. Max gets up to answer and
it is his new friends, Mindy, Ashlynn, and Will. Max says,
“Please excuse my dump of a house. My parents fix up houses for
a living, in the meantime, I must suffer with the conditions.”
Will says, “No prob, it’s fine.”
Mindy pipes in, “So where’s the basement?”
“Right this way,” Max replies.
They head down to the basement and everything was set up for
D&D. Max says, “In my spare time I looked up how to play and how
to set it up.”
They started to play and Will says “I think I left my 20 sided
die at my house, I will be right back.”
Max pipes in and says, “I have one over here.” Max walks over to
the golden die and tosses it to Will. Will misses and hits it
with his elbow and it goes flying across the basement and when
it lands, it lands on an odd symbol and it turns into a gold
interdimensional rift.
Ashlynn says, “Will, what did you do?”
“I didn’t do anything. Maybe my elbow is magical.”
“Stick your hand in it.”
“Why?”
“You were the one who opened it!”
“Ugh, fine,” Will groans and did as she said and he got sucked
through.
Everyone jumped through not thinking, to try and catch Will and
when they entered the rift, it felt like someone was trying to
tear them in half. It looked like they were getting turned into
something else. Max and Will turned into golden Dragonborns with
swords slung across their backs. Mindy turned into a dwarf with
a sledgehammer in her hand. Ashlynn turned into a wizard with a
staff in her hand. It made Max’s mouth taste terrible. It smelt
like a forest the farther they went. They finally got through
the rift.
They look at each other and Max says, “Who are you?”
“I’m Ashlynn, who are you?”
“I’m Max. Wait, I look exactly like I described my D&D
character.”
“You are right, I do too,” says Will
“So we are pretty much in a D&D world,” Max says. “By the way
last night three white dragons came to my house looking for
something.”
“You’re telling us this now!” Ashlynn exclaims, shooting
lightning out of her staff at the tree next to her.
“Never mind about that. We have to get out of here fast or I
will use my sledgehammer on you,” Mindy said. “There’s a crystal
that is said to bring anyone back to their home, maybe that is
here too. The kids that disappeared in this house all played D&D
with me. Now I know how they disappeared. Now let's go!”
“That would be the dwarf temper,” Will whispers to Max.
They have to travel to Screamers Cave to find a diamond
spearhead. Mindy led the group to Screamers Cave threatening
them with her sledgehammer every now and then. Meanwhile, Will
and Ashlynn explained what Max could do in D&D. Right, when they
got to Screamers Cave they heard a deep roar coming from the
cave that was different than a dragon’s roar. The entrance
looked like a face screaming. “I see how the cave got its name,”
Max said and they entered the Screaming Cave trying to copy the
screaming face. They thought it was empty but then they got
ambushed by a cyclops. They had to fight the cyclops who had the
diamond spearhead on his spear. On the wall, there was an
identical spear shaft with no head on it. Will cut off the
spearhead and Mindy jumped up and caught it and threw it at the
cyclops’ eye. Max walked over to the cyclops and took out the
spearhead. Then as they left they gathered the gold from the
cave. They went to the Minotaur’s Labyrinth and a stampede of
centaurs blocked their way and started to head toward the
Labyrinth and they hitched a ride and they got there at the end
of the day. They camped out and Will started a fire with his
fire breath and then Max stayed up all night and all through the
night you could hear the minotaur’s roars while he practiced his
fire breath. He went hunting in the morning before everyone woke
up. He found some chickens and broke their necks and started
cooking them on his way back. Then a little wolf pup came out of
the forest whimpering. It looked hungry and out of nowhere, a
chicken leg was tossed to the wolf pup. Max turned around and
found Mindy awake next to the chicken. The pup ate it and it
went into Mindy’s pack.
After breakfast, they ventured through the Labyrinth and they
left gold coins to find their way back. They searched it for 3
hours before they found the Minotaur. It was wandering the maze
and one of its two horns was missing and that was definitely one
of the items they needed. They tried to sneak up on it but it
heard them and charged Mindy and she went flying through the
wall. She was slumped on the ground half-conscious with the pup
licking her face worried. The Minotaur looked at Ashlynn as she
cast a protection spell over her and Mindy, but Max said, “Hey,
over here you oversized hunk of meat!”
The Minotaur turned toward Max offended and charged toward him.
Max ran to the wall behind him and took two steps on the wall
and did a flip above the Minotaur and he swung his sword in the
middle of his flip and chopped off the minotaur’s other horn.
The minotaur charged into the wall and knocked itself out and
the horn fell to the ground. Then Max picks up the horn and runs
toward Mindy and notices that she was bleeding on the stomach.
The minotaur’s horn must have hit her. Ashlynn uses a healing
spell on her with a flash of green light the wound was healed
but Mindy was still slumped on the ground recovering. Ashlynn
asks Max, “How did you do that?”
“I-I don’t know,” Max replies wearily. “Where is Will?”
Will comes rushing into the room and says, “We have a problem.”
He rushes over to Mindy and piggybacks her out of the Labyrinth.
When they burst out of the Labyrinth they saw three white
dragons flying in the air above. “The dragons must be chasing
Max. He is the one who found the die. They were also searching
through his house. The die must leave an aura on anyone who
touches it and it must be a high leveled magic item.”
“How do we get rid of them?” Ashlynn yells.
Without a word, Max dashes toward the Labyrinth wall and starts
climbing to the roof digging his claws into the stone. When he
reaches the roof he races about halfway across to get momentum.
He runs to the edge and jumps off and uses his fire breath to
propel himself toward the dragons and then he fire breaths his
sword and chops off their wings one by one and they fall to the
ground. Max lands with a crash that created an explosion when he
slammed the sword into the ground and it destroyed the whole
front wall of the Labyrinth killing the three dragons.
Will stares in awe and rapidly says, “How did you do that and I
don’t even know how to do that, and did you not just start
today?”
“I don’t know, I just did it.”
Ashlynn, who was covered in dust, walked out of the Labyrinth
and asked, “What happened?!”
“Max incinerated the wall,” Will replied.
“Ok that doesn’t explain much, let’s get to Unlucky’s Tavern for
the night,” Ashlynn said.
Max takes a dagger and skins the scales off of the dragons. Then
they traveled about another mile to get to the tavern. They paid
about fifty gold coins each for their rooms. Mindy recovered
from her injuries about an hour after they arrived at the
tavern. They all settled into their rooms at 6 pm and woke up at
4 am to get back on the road. To travel faster, they had to
steal some horses and are making their way to the Well of
Terrors.
When they arrived they tied the horses to a post and they all
made their way down the 1000-year-old well. It was covered in
mold and mildew. The rocks that formed the well were loose. Once
they got down the well, the walls of the well collapse. They
have to fight a giant frog to get one of its two tongues. They
get down there and they notice one of its tongues was missing.
They fought and Will sliced off the tongue when it shot towards
him and the giant frog ran or hopped away.
They used the rope to get back out and the horses were ready to
travel after they got out of the well. They traveled to the
Vampire’s Fang. Vampire’s Fang is an upside-down tower as if it
were a fang. The floor would fall out under their feet. Bats
were hanging from the “floor”. When they got to the “bottom”
floor, the vampire said, “If you want my fang, just take it!
It’s useless to me unless I have two. I just want sunlight, but
that will kill me.”
Ashlynn replies, “I can help you with that. I have a spell that
I used last year during a time that I was cursed to not be in
sunlight.” Ashlynn yells an incantation on the vampire and he is
now able to be in sunlight. He yanks out his fang and hands it
to Ashlynn. “Thank you, we appreciate it.”
“No, thank you,” he says sincerely. He flies out of a shaded
window and flies off.
They made their way to the “top” of the tower and headed to
Excalibur’s Castle. They got there within the hour and Max heard
the exact same earth-shattering roar he had heard at his house.
“That is the roar I heard at my house. I think that he has a
crystal to our world because that is the only way back. Have you
noticed that one of two items the monsters had was gone before
we got there? He must have made one.”
“Then he must be pretty tough, like Ashardalon,” said Mindy.
Everyone but Max looked as scared as if they were facing their
worst fear.
Finally, after they were done explaining Ashardalon to Max they
went inside the castle. The castle looked like it was brand new,
except for the various scorch marks everywhere. When they
entered the castle they heard the roar again. Right after the
roar finished fire burst through the corridors. “How did it know
we were here,” Mindy said.
Will replies, “He must sense Max’s aura. It’s the only
explanation.”
“I don’t like this aura!” Max yells.
The flames would come back every minute and when they made it to
the throne room they found out what was making the fire. It was
a gold dragon and it blew fire at them as soon as it saw them.
They ran for cover. Max went out in the open and the dragon blew
fire at him and it looked like he wasn’t even burned. The dragon
was confused. Max ran to the dragon and started to blowtorch the
gold scales and they started to melt. Since the dragon was
focused on Max everyone charged into the battle. Ashlynn used a
stasis spell on the dragon but it did not work very long since
it was 100 feet tall. They attacked its legs and wings but
nothing but Max’s fire breath was working. Ashlynn focused on
Max’s fire and noticed it was gold, but she decided to keep it
to herself. Max started to run up the dragon’s tail and when he
got to the head of the dragon he noticed there was a crystal
embedded in its forehead so he charged up his sword with fire
and jumped off the dragon’s snout to the chandelier and then he
yelled, “Take cover!” Everyone did as he said and took cover. He
leaped off the chandelier and did a mid-air flip and slammed his
sword into the dragon’s crystal and he created a fiery explosion
and the dragon keeled over and died. Mindy, Will, and Ashlynn
were sent flying out of the throne room. Max was nowhere to be
seen and when his friends came back in they looked at the
ceiling to see a Max shaped hole. Then about three minutes of
mourning from his friends he comes crashing through the roof and
creates a dusty, fiery explosion. “OW!” He screams and they rush
over and find him alive. He gets up and falls right back down
and retches up lava (aka Dragonborn puke).
Finally, after a couple minutes he gets up and starts skinning
the dragon’s scales. Then when he finished the tail he found a
golden egg, and it was hatching. They watched as the golden baby
dragon leaped into Max’s arms thinking he was its mother. “I
guess we could go home now that we have the throne to forge the
crystal. The baby dragon will stay with me and will show up next
time we come here. I am not going to leave him without parents.”
They put the items on the throne and they start to glow. They
had turned into a crystal twenty-sided die. Max rolled it and it
turned into a portal like the other one. They walked through it
with the dragon on Max’s back. They were in the D&D world for
three days. They were home but, it was only three minutes they
were gone. They returned and the baby dragon was a gold pawn in
Max’s hand and so was his character pawn. Everyone else also had
their character in their hands. They had a great adventure and
they played D&D with their pawns and the baby dragon. After an
hour they were done playing and started to pack up.
“Feels like our adventure is stranger than a fiction story,”
Will says and chuckles.
Before Mindy left she asked Max’s parents, “Can we come back and
play weekly?”
Max’s mom says, “Yes, and this house will look a lot nicer when
you come back.”
“Thank you.” Mindy starts heading off and Max is now braver than
ever because of their adventure. Max was already starting to
like it there. What he didn’t understand was how he knew those
moves and he was going to find out how.
To be continued...
