       Young Hearts Be Free Tonight { Young! Jason & Colleen }

I posted this over on Tumblr and tried tagging you but I think
the tags are screwing up again. Have you had that problem lately
or is it just me? This popped up after Spotify did a thing and
it got me wondering what would have happened if Eileen hadn’t
approved of Jason? Would Colleen follow her heart and make a run
for it under the cover of night…and what would she say to Helene
if she did decide to follow him? Maybe some day we can tie this
into a thread or something for the girls? I didn’t want to take
over Helene in case you wanted to reply or tie in something so
I’m sorry if it seems like Col’s going all the talking. ;-)
Snippets & Bobs: Young Hearts Be Free Tonight
Scanning the room one last time Colleen felt the ache in her
chest deepen. She had packed her clothes and a few cherished
mementoes carefully in the worn leather duffle bag before
penning a letter to her mother and leaving it on the table in
the front hall. Clicking off the keyring that contained her copy
of the house key she brushed away a stray tear and made her way
over through the backyard to Helene’s. Thunder rolled low out
towards the coastline drop off towards Hatcher Point. A summer
storm was brewing. Casting a weary eye upwards she pleaded with
Mother Nature to hold off on the rain for a bit.
‘God, please let her be home. Please.’
She thought to herself as she threw a pebble at Hel’s window.
Waiting for a moment she saw a light click on and she smiled.
Shimmying up the drainpipe as she saw her friend get out of bed
she motioned for her to open the window.
Colleen knew she could have used the front door but it just
didn’t seem right at the moment. She knew that the shit was
going to hit the fan when her mother came home. For whatever
reason she couldn’t stand Jason and had made it known from the
get go that he wasn’t worthy of Col’s love. Her father, Jim, had
gotten along with Jason like a house on fire until he died last
year that way. Maybe that was why her mother couldn’t stand
Jason? He reminded her too much of husband she had laid to rest
but her dislike of Col’s lover had predated Jimmy’s death so it
would forever be a mystery. They had graduated only a month ago
and her birthday was a week ago. Her mom had bailed to go out
with a bunch of the women she worked with and Colleen had spent
her birthday crying and puking in the bathroom upstairs totally
reeling from the unexpected curveball life had chucked at her.
It seemed like forever until Jason had gotten off work planning
on surprising her with roses. Instead, he just held her while
she apologized and sobbed into his shirt as he sat with her
trying to figure out a way to make everything okay again. He had
been able to calm her down just in time for Helene to ring the
bell and surprise both of them with a Carvel cake and party
       hats.
‘You’d think after four years together she’d accept it. But no.
Ma can’t. Helene does though. She gets it.’
       ‘What are you doin’?”
“I came to say goodbye, Hel. We’re doin’ it. Jason and I are
       making a run for it.”
She watched as tears welled up in her best friend’s, no, Helene
was always more than that. Her sister. She watched as unshed
tears welled up in her sister’s eyes and clambered over the sill
and stumbled into the bedroom with a soft thud before pulling
       her in for a hug.
“I’m sorry. I just…I can’t stay here and wither away. Ma hates
Jason and I don’t know how to get her to see that he’d give me
the moon and stars. She doesn’t wanna see it. She’s going to
have a cow when she reads that letter…”
Colleen was rambling as she felt another bout of tears well up
       again.
“I know she’s not going to forgive me. Forgive us. For leaving
but we have to, we’ve gotta start over because I’m due in
January and…and…I can’t have her giving me that...that look.
That ‘you’ve disappointed me for the last time, young lady’
look. I’ll write to you, I’ll even call after we get settled but
please please please know that I love you, Helene. Always and
forever and to the stars and back.”
Peering out the window she spotted Jason’s car pulling up the
alley behind the houses. It had just started to rain, almost
like it was Mother Nature’s way of creating a fresh start for
them even before they left. The ache in her chest came again as
an idea hit her like a freight train. There was more than enough
room in the back of Jason's car as they had only packed two bags
each. Eyes shining with hope and fresh tears Colleen looked at
her dark haired doe eyed best friend.
“Do you want to come with us?”
