Love's The Last To Know

A/N: Did a rewatch of SOA and hearing Tig talk about Colleen in
such a negative light really broke my heart. I know it shouldn't
have but it did. Think of this as an AU sort of thing. I've
changed some things around just creative purposes. Title
Inspiration: Love's The Last To Know by Bob Seger.
"There was a girl I really loved. Would have moved heaven and
earth for her. She had my heart from day one, man."
“You mean Colleen? I thought you two just had Dawn.”
“Oh that ****? I wish that **** **** was dead. No, I'm talking
about a girl I knew before I met that gash. Baby would have been
a boy.”
Colleen felt her heart stop. There had been no one before her,
she knew this, he knew this but once again Alexander had managed
to break her heart all over again for what seemed like the
hundredth time. She had originally showed up to have him sign
the last of the paperwork on the house that no longer felt like
home. Dawn's bedroom had finally been packed up, no thanks to
him. She had allowed him to move back in because he had no other
place to go and she thought just for a second that she needed
him. Now she knew she didn't. She made a purposeful movement
toward a heavy tool chest and gave it a good solid kick making
sure she left a dent and a scratch.
“Sign these.”
She watched as her husband tensed and turned to face her. He
actually had the gall to tell others that they were divorced. In
reality they were still married but separated.
“C..Colleen.”
“Not a word. Sign the papers and pack your things.”
She'd given him a solid twenty-five years of marriage and this
was what he said about her behind her back. He wasn't wrong, the
child before Dawn would have been a boy had he survived longer
than five hours. The middle one would have been a girl but she
had been lost right before the second ultrasound. After Dawn
there was supposed to be another boy but he had been stillborn.
Right now she could kill him.
“I didn't...it was just talk.”
“Yeah, right. Talk. Forget the twenty some years I gave to you.
Forget all the messes I cleaned up for you. The baby I raised
without your help, the home I made while you were out running
for the club. The lies I've told. I'm just some piece for you,
that's all I ever was.”
She watched him sign his signature with a shaky hand as his hung
head low.
“It's a front, Colly. Always was.”
“She would still be alive had she not come to see you. I left a
box in the office for you. Give your keys to the realtor because
when you're done here I won't be there.”
“What?”
“I'm going. There's nothing keeping me here.”
“Not even me?”
“Especially you.”
“I'm sorry.”
“It's too late for apologies.”
“Please...”
“Don't. Just don't. It'll just be another lie and I can't take
it. My heart can't take it, okay?”
That was the last time she would step foot into Charming, the
town she had called home for over two decades. She thought she
would cry, but the further she drove the more the weights lifted
away from her shoulders. Rolling down the window she felt her
wedding ring set slip off of her finger somewhere near the city
limit line. Her first stop when she reached Los Angeles would be
to get the crow covered up. Then and only then would she get in
contact with a lawyer and have Alex properly served with papers.
She was truly starting over. Why hadn't she done this ten years
ago while she still had Dawn? Because she still loved him with
all of her heart. She thought he had loved her but after hearing
those words and years of gut feelings that something was off she
ignored it. There was a saying that she could remember her
mother saying. In times of crisis, especially when she'd heard
that a marriage was breaking up.
'Love's always the last to know, Colly. Always.'
She had been right. She had blinded herself to seeing Tig for
what he was. Now with his true colors so clear before her she
set out and spread her wings to make a life for herself
somewhere where no one knew her. She still had time.

I am so sorry it's taken me over a month to see this one! I am a
little bit stunned into silence over this piece, because of the
relationship between Tig and Col over time and how lovely they
have been together. I'm surprised he would say such a thing
about her, even if it was just a front to make him seem unphased
by their troubled marriage.. it's still absolutely no reason to
make such harsh comments, especially regarding their daughter.
This is such an emotive drabble, but I'm really happy that Col
has decided to move on from something like this.. she absolutely
shouldn't be around that; even his apologies won't make up for
the fact that he said such cruel things.
