Angel Unaware

A/N: My mother worked for the Revell publishing company years
and years ago and ended up with a copy of the book of the same
name by Dale Evans Rogers. She passed it on to me and told me
'Read this.' Me being the curious thing that I am read it. I
read it in an afternoon and spent the better part of it in
tears, it's not long but it was unexpected. This piece was
inspired by it a little bit and somewhere out there is a song to
go with it, I'm sure youtube has it or something. For some
reason even in his mind Buddy still calls Colly by her given
name. Just thought I'd throw that in there.
Did we honestly wait too long to have a child?
Does it run on my side of the family?
What do we do now?
Why did this happen to us?
Millions of thoughts swirled around Buddy Hollis’s mind but the
minute he saw the look on his wife’s face, it was as if she was
lighting the bedroom herself the joy radiated off of her in
waves of light. That inner light she projected swept those
thoughts away in an instant.
“He’s beautiful isn’t he?”
Her green eyes danced with a whole new light he had never seen
before as she counted tiny toes and fingers and kissed the
delicate little forehead where a swoop of a sandy colored curl
laid down.
“You’re handsome, yes you are. You’re just the sweetest little
piece of heaven.”
She had wrapped the infant snuggly up once more to ward off the
chill from the February draft that whipped around the house.
“You wanna meet your Daddy? Yes?”
A gentle hand reached out to caress his shoulder for a moment as
if to ease his worries. He steadied himself and settled in the
rocker by the side of the bed. The warm weight of the newborn in
his arms melted into him as the tiny face focused and unfocused
on his own.
It was as if a floodgate had opened and those questions that had
whirled through his mind were blown out with the wind that made
the house creak like a wooden ship.
‘I have a son.’
‘He’s a healthy eight pounds and two ounces.’
‘Ruthie's okay, he's okay. We’re all together.’
Working one long finger into the palm of their son’s hand he
felt it. The first grip of life, steady and strong. A coo
escaped the son they would call Abel. It was as if he was
studying him.
“Hello, Abel.”
Tears welled up and slid down his long tired face and fell
silently on the light blue knitted blanket Ruth had finished
only the week before.
“We’ve waited so long to meet you. So long and you’re finally
here.”
Abel seemed content and drifted off to the sound of his father’s
heartbeat.
“We were meant to have him. He’s a gift and he’s here and he’s
ours.”
Buddy murmured to his wife who was beaming contentedly. One of
the midwives had snapped a photo that to this day will always be
a family favorite. It was the first photo of a family filled
with love and wonder at the miracle that had occurred. No matter
the obstacles the child would face in his life he knew, bone
deep, that he was adored and supported. For he was their gift.
He was their angel unaware.

I'm so head over heels for this piece. I love the way Abel's
parents adore him so much and how in other pieces, you've
written the challenges they face, as well as how Col handled a
particular incident and chose to never go there again. I have so
much love for Abel as a character now that it's impossible to
see him as anything other than real. The way you're developing
him, as well as the relationship between Col and Buddy, is so
charming and they are the perfect little family. I love how much
they dote on him and how he's quite literally a little angel in
their lives. I'm pretty sure I've heard of this book, but I
don't think I've ever read it, so that will be one I look out
for! thank you for sharing that information as well as this
beautiful piece of writing :-*
