Light of a Clear Blue Morning

* just a small drabble between Colly and Abel late one evening
and the importance of not giving a fig about what anyone else
says. This does tie into all the verses for Buddy & Colly *
This was their routine since before Abel was born it seemed.
Even when he was still in the womb he always became active every
evening around eleven and the only way she found that she could
settle him was to sing. It had started with simple hummed
melodies until she discovered that their little one enjoyed
Dolly Parton. Colly had sung in church growing up and along with
the radio but was still self conscious the sound she produced.
That was a thing of the past, with motherhood came a sort of
confidence in herself and a pride over the fact that she was
able to give her son a sense of security. She eased herself out
of the large bed she shared with Buddy, who thankfully was
soundly sleeping after a day out in the fields and tip toed down
the hall into their little one’s bedroom. Leaning over his
cradle she smiled at him in the soft glow of the small
nightlight as she reached to pick him up.
“You’re supposed to be sleepin’ you know that?”
A hiccuping sob escaped his tiny body as she checked his diaper,
dry. She had just fed him about thirty minutes ago so he
couldn’t possibly be having hunger pangs. Perhaps he needed
reassurance to nod off once more. Swaying gently as she cradled
Abel she smiled as he gazed up at her in not so silent wonder.
Huffing and whimpering ensued as she hummed to find her pitch.
He nuzzled into the side of her neck and snuffled. She prayed
that he wasn’t coming down with a cold of some sort so early. He
was only six months old but given his immune system she always
erred on the side of caution when taking him out and about into
town. She still teared up when she remembered one of her great
aunt’s visiting and seeing Abel. To her and Buddy he was the
most wonderful gift they could ever have received.
‘If I were you I’d put that child into a home. They don’t live
long anyway.’
‘Why didn’t you get the appropriate screening during your doctor
visits?’
‘That’s what you get for having a baby at your age.’
These were the moments that the pain, not for herself but for
her son, welled up and she sang. To calm him, to calm herself.
Those cruel words cut her to the quick and broke her heart each
time she heard them. Even if they weren't intended to be truly
mean, to her they were.
“We don’t care what anyone says, you’re the most precious thing
in this world to your Daddy and me. You’re just perfect the way
you are, Abel and don’t ever let anyone ever tell you
otherwise.”
They settled into the rocker, the same one they had found in the
attic when they had moved in and rocked. The swaying helped her
keep time.
And I've been looking for the sunshine
'Cause I ain't seen it in so long
Everything's gonna work out just fine
Everything's gonna be all right
That's been all wrong
Tiny almond eyes stared up at her in now quiet wonder, studying
her as he reached a hand out to touch her long dark hair as the
sound of the rain pattered against the window. Running a gentle
hand over his back she soothed him further with small circles.
‘Everyone else can go straight to hell if they think they can
judge us for how we live our life. It’s not my fault or your
fault or Abel’s fault. God gave him to us because he is the
child we were meant to have. If they don’t understand that
then…they’re stupid and narrow minded fools.’
She remembered the rant she’d gone into one afternoon after they
had gone a town over for groceries and to pick up a load of feed
for the dairy cows and the chickens because it was cheaper at
that Agway. Abel was only two months old then and his facial
features were a bit more prominent then they had been at the
time of his birth. Ogdinville was even smaller than McCavish
where they called home but both were still in Astwood county.
Ogdinvillers were even more narrow minded than she could even
stand and she had ended up in tears much to the surprise of her
husband even more to her own shock. Her Mama would have blamed
it all on the hormones but Colly knew it was deeper. Why should
her son be judged for something he could not help? It was no
one’s fault it was just something that happened. Tears welled up
at the memory and she brushed them away. It wasn’t her concern
what others thought. Abel was hers and Buddy’s and they were
proud to have him. So here they were listening to the sound of
the rain and thunder outside watering the garden and fields of
corn that had seemingly grown up overnight. Life, despite what
others said, was good.
I've been like a captured eagle
You know an eagle's born to fly
And now that I have won my freedom
Like an eagle I'm eager for the sky
Switching a now drowsy eyed Abel to the left side so he could
see the raindrops sliding down the windowpane she smiled. These
moments, no matter how much work they had put into leading up to
it or how much more they had to go were worth it. She wouldn’t
trade this for all the money in the world. Neither would Buddy.
They were a family, just like everyone else. Now, she sang in
happiness, in contentment and with hope and faith that the
future was going to be a wonderful one.
'Cause I can see the light of a clear blue morning
I can see the light of a brand new day
I can see the light of a clear blue morning
Everything's gonna be all right
It's gonna be okay
Everything's gonna be all right
It's gonna be okay
She watched with a smile as those tiny tired almond eyes slid
closed and Abel’s breathing became even. He was truly sound
asleep yet still she rocked him, feeling his weight and
relishing in the fact that in her heart her son was truly a gift
made especially for her. She and Buddy would raise him with
gentleness and guide him down the right path. He would be strong
and kind and smart in his own way. Just like everyone else that
walked the earth. She remembered a quote she had heard somewhere
ages ago. ‘It not how smart you are but how you are smart.’ It
had struck a chord with her. Her son would have every
opportunity to thrive that she and her husband could make happen
but right now she basked in the moment when they had all the
answers for him. Just as Dolly’s song had said, everything was
going to be alright.

This is absolutely beautiful. I want to address that because I
notice pretty much all over tumblr as much as anyone else,
people seem fearful for some unusual reason, to write things of
this nature. No matter the fandom, the inspiration, the original
work, people just don't seem to input these sorts of
disabilities / disorders ( never sure which term to use because
in the real world, I don't condone the use of them for this sort
of thing ). It is very easy picking out the reasons why people
don't go into it in their writing. I feel like they are scared,
literally, be it of messing up or they don't understand, or
simply because they are too ignorant to the fact that these
things happen. It's one of my pet peeves in the writing world. I
actually commend the very limited amount of folk who will delve
into this topic, which is why I'm now sounding like a fool maybe
because I'm going into a rant about that, aha. For how much
these situations affect people on the regular, it grates on my
nerves that no one explores it in writing enough and I think
they should. They need to be more open. These things aren't once
in a blue moon so they're pretty common instances. Putting that
aside, though, because you've taken this on so beautifully, I
want to say thank you. And I want to say thank you to Col and
Buddy for having Abel and for his existence now in the world. It
might be a little difficult to swallow these things when they
happen, but I'm sure both parents, just like Col is in this
snippet, are handling it amazingly, which is more than I can say
for most. I would love to see more of this nature on tumblr,
too. I think it really gets to me for the same reason that Col's
upset in this piece. People are cruel in how they criticise
someone else's child for appearance alone. This piece makes me
feel very warm inside and it's incredibly loving. I can't wait
to read more about Abel <3 I hope, too, to see him around tumblr
so my muses can interact with him in some way <3
