Where You Lead Me I Will Go
‘I heard they just ran off while her Mama was down at the Piggly
Wiggly getting their groceries.’
‘Well I heard that he got her in trouble, it’s the only rational
reason they’d be getting married so young, don’t you think?’
‘I give them a year before they’re back living in the apartment
above the barn over at the Walker place. Mark my words.’
‘Well, I think it’s romantic. Just two kids starting out and
knowing exactly what they want and goin’ after it like that.
More power to’em.’
‘Oh hush up, Mary June. Nobody wants to hear you waxing poetic
about them.’
The above are snippets of what you might have heard if you were
to walk into Verna’s Salon down on the main street of town the
following Monday after what the entire town dubbed ‘The
Incident.’ Now, Trinity is like most other sleepy little towns,
folks help one another and aren’t afraid to give but like almost
every other small town in America there are indeed some draw
backs. Like everyone knowing everyone else’s business just when
the family doesn’t want them to. Case in point? The day Colly
Walker ran off with the Hollis boy, who everyone in town calls
Buddy. Sure, everyone knew they were dating but she had just
graduated from high school the previous month and hadn’t said a
peep about just how seriously she felt about the gangly sandy
haired boy from two farms over.
“I can’t believe she’d just go and do a thing like this! It
ain’t right and now what are Mama and Daddy supposed to do now
that she’s gone?”
The eldest of the Walker sisters was trying ever so hard not to
lose her temper as she paced the large expanse of her kitchen as
she cradled the phone on her right shoulder and her youngest
baby on her left. Leave it to Sadie to lose her cool. She always
did, maybe it was the fact that she was the middle sister?
“Sadie do me a favor?”
“What ‘Lou?”
“Shut the hell up and be happy that Colly finally grew a
backbone. You know as well as I do that Mama always thought that
she could get away with keeping Colly under her thumb.”
“Well, she supposed to be the one..”
“To what? Put her life on hold until they both pass away and
then try and go out and forge a life for herself? Sadie, that’s
just plain cruel and unfair. Colly saw her chance and she took
it. Good for her. Buddy treats her like she’s the most precious
thing in the world and she’s over the moon about him. Be happy
that they’ve got such an early start.”
Silence on the line for a moment and then a deep sigh. Marylou
could tell that her words had reached her mule headed sister and
she smiled to herself.
“You’re right.”
“I’m sorry. What did you say dearest Sarah?”
“I said…you’re right. Jeesh, don’t you go making me say it
again.”
“I won’t but I’m filing this one away for future gloating. Oh!
I’ll call you back I’ve got another call coming in.”
“Alright..wait I’ll see you at Mama’s tomorrow for supper. We’ll
talk..or rather you’ll gloat then.”
“You know it.”
A quick push of a button and the sounds of what sounded like
banjo music filled her right ear. What in the world?
“Hello?”
“Marylou! Please don’t hang up! It’s Colly…”
A swift rustle and a deeper voice came on filled with mirth
MaryLou could hear his smile.
“And Buddy.”
“And Buddy and we just wanted to call you and tell you that we
made it to Hank’s uncle’s place safe and sound. Thank you for
everything. I don’t know how we’re going to pay you back but we
will.”
“Pay me? I only gave you five bucks for gas and the extra house
key. It wasn’t anything at all and I’d do it again. Mama’s still
shocked and Daddy’s come to accept it. To quote him ‘that Hollis
boy is a good egg. She’ll be safe with him.’ Sadie’s lost her
mind over the fact that she might just be the one to have to
step in and help Mama now she’s happy for you but not looking
forward to stepping up, she’ll be fine though, don’t worry.
Granny Ruth told me to tell you that she plans on visiting you
as soon as you two set up house somewhere.”
“Tell Mama and Sadie that I’m sorry..but I had to go. If I
didn’t I’m sure I’d have just…I dunno I had to go. Give Daddy
and Granny both a kiss for me and let them know, let them all
know that I love them.”
“What about me?”
“You know I love you, ‘Lou. To the moon and back. Oh! We’re up,
our number’s getting called. I’ll call you from the Motel 6 when
we get there.”
A lump formed in the back of MaryLou’s throat as she said one
last goodbye to her little sister. She knew that at this moment
after Colly hung up she’d no longer be a Walker. Fifteen minutes
from now she’d have a new last name and a husband of her own and
a chance to live her life on her own terms. The twinge of
sadness in her heart was flooded by happiness for her sister.
Even if she was nine hundred and twelve miles away. The little
one on her shoulder had now settled into a nap and was quickly
and quietly put down in her crib. Perhaps one day Colly and
Buddy would have children of their own, she knew that they had
talked it over and agreed to wait until they both had money
saved and a place to call their own. Smart thinking, she and
Hank had agreed. Sitting herself down in the living room she
noticed the family bible was at an odd angle and a new marker
had been placed. Upon closer inspection she noticed that it was
a fifty dollar note and a small piece of paper.
‘Borrowed a page, hope you and Hank don’t mind but I think this
is the only way Mama is going to understand it. Enclosing money
for a replacement since this is the one that you record
everything in. Be sure to mark July 2nd down. Love and thanks to
you and Hank. - Love, Colly.’
MaryLou couldn’t help but smile as she took out a pen and jotted
down their names in the Marriages section.
Across two country lanes Evie Walker sat at her kitchen table
staring at the worn page of a bible that had been taped to the
glass of the front door along with a note telling her not to
worry.
‘Mama & Daddy, Please don’t be mad but I have to go. If I stay
in Trinity I’ll wither away and I can’t let Buddy go alone. I
love him and will travel by his side. I know you think we’re too
young but wasn’t it you that told me when I was little that when
I found true love I’d know? Well, I found him. I love you. -
Colly’
The bible page was nestled in with the letter and underlined
were the lines that always for some reason made Evie’s eyes well
up.
Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your
people will be my people, and your God will be my God.
In the Braxton Family bible MaryLou had recorded births and
marriages and deaths but today was a joyful occasion.
Ruth Colleen Walker to Boaz Bridger Hollis July 2nd Pigeon
Forge Tennessee. In parenthesis they were simply nicknamed
‘Colly and Buddy’.

I think I'm totally smitten with this piece because it's
reminding me of the situation I'm currently in. I'm so proud of
Col for running off with her man like that and doing something
for herself! I'm also glad that her sister's are on her side,
even if one of them took some convincing, aha. I hope that her
Mother comes around soon as well because that's going to be one
hell of a long road if she doesn't. I always feel like it's much
easier for people to be more so accepting of the things they
can't control, 'cause that way, there's less grief / stress /
trouble overall. People need to be more understanding of love,
especially. I feel like had I myself found more of a backbone
all those years ago, I could have been in America right now. I
believe that. I had the same conversation with Drac a few nights
ago, too. A lot of the things I struggle with probably held me
back, but lately I've been standing up for myself a lot more and
my home has turned into a hell house because of it. I no longer
associate this house with being my home, though, luckily. For a
long time, I haven't felt home unless I'm spending time with
him, so this piece hits home so much. It's beautiful and I would
love to read updates of how they are getting along together
after their marriage!

Aha! I love that gif! The adorableness I cannot handle. ;) I'm
not going to lie, you and Drac were the partial inspiraton ( as
were Joey + Rory Feek ) for Buddy and Col on this one I like to
think that it took four people to inspire their love story. To
have the courage to follow your dream...that's immense and
something I'm so very very proud of you for doing, you've got
your wings like I said before and you deserve to live the life
you want without fear of upsetting others. It's a sad sad day
when the place you once called home stops feeling like it.
You've earned the right to do what you wish my dear and you're
right, the world would be a much better place entirely if people
approached things with a bit more understand and compassion
especially when it comes to relationships. Home, to me anyway,
is where the people ( or person ) you love are. It's not a
physical being but a soul deep one.
I will be adding more and more onto their story as it unfolds as
they're such a lovely couple and quite talkative to boot. They
keep telling me to mention the cabin on the property of the
Ridge that they restored for Helene and Caleb if they ever wish
to stay. Their own little home away from home if you will. So,
there you go! It's mentioned ;) P.S. They're honorary Hollis'
in Buddy and Colly's eyes.
