Cold Green Eyes

A/N: I know I've touched on the deterioration of Colleen and
Jeremy's relationship on the blog before but never quite to this
depth. It differs from what's been posted but I suppose that's
part of the facets. The interesting bits. His side, her side,
and the truth. The ending of a relationships can be quite
painful but based just on how Jeremy treated her prior to it
ending I honestly don't think Col's going to be too sad to see
him leave. ;) I do so hope you enjoy it. Perhaps we'll touch on
the subject in a thread or two later on? This is Col's side of
things. Enjoy my dear!

‘The most painful thing in the world isn’t being alone, oh no
dear girl, oh no. At least when you’re alone by yourself you can
be open with just your soul, no false faces or feelings. It’s
knowing that the man you promised to love, cherish, and honor on
your wedding day no longer loves you as much as you love him and
you can’t even question him because deep down you both know it
to be the truth. That, my dear is the most painful thing in the
world.’
- Author Unknown
“You’re acting like a spoilt child, Colleen.”
“Acting like a child?! You were the one that invited your
mistress to our anniversary dinner and had the balls to
introduce her to the entire table.”
“She’s a colleague, Colleen and she came to wish us well.”
“She’s your damn secretary, Jeremy! She didn’t say so much as
two words to me and yet she had her hands all over you.”
The clatter of Colleen’s heels echoed throughout the receiving
area. The tract lights came up and the stark white walls took on
a clinical appearance. This was no home, it was never intended
to be as such. This was a place of modern opulence where only
the finest glass and chrome furnishings were arranged.
Personality had been snuffed out of the space as soon as Jeremy
had gotten hold of the nearest modernist decorator in the Yellow
Pages and Colleen had been left out of the discussion. To her
eyes it was like Memphis Milano meets sterile operating theater
in stark whites, shining chromes and gleaming black. This was
not her home, this was Jeremy’s power statement. His abode
entirely even if she was the one with the money.
“She brushed bread crumbs from my lapel. She cares about me…my
image.”
Her very heart stopped as her eyes bore down into his. A clash
of blue and green on opposite sides of the open living room. She
watched him turn away from her and reach for the bottle of
Macallan she had gifted him for Christmas this year and pour
himself a double. He had a habit of doing that more and more
lately.
“Turn around and say that again.”
Lean muscle tensed beneath the crisp cut of his suit shirt. The
fine silk suit jacket was laying haphazardly over the couch and
was already beginning to wrinkle.
“Why should I state the obvious a second…or is it the third
time? She cares about me, Colleen. Much more than you ever did.”
The knife in her heart twisting another inch as cold hard rage
settled over features. She knew she would never strike him.
‘Oh no. No, to hit him just wouldn’t do. I’ll get him right
where it hurts.’
She thought to herself as a cold hard smile settled in place.
Turning on her heel she moved towards the bedroom and went about
packing everything she had ever gifted him into the monogramed
luggage he had coveted only two years ago on his birthday. She
cleared out his side of the bathroom vanity and his jewelry box
before closing everything up and winging out into the vast
expanse of living room where he sat sprawled in one of the most
uncomfortable looking chairs Colleen had ever seen while
perusing the Evening Standard. A message had been left on the
answering machine of a Benjamin Chase, an attorney that came
very highly regarded in her social circle and another was placed
to the security firm that was making evening rounds.
“Yes, this is Ms. Murphy. I’d like for you to see my companion
off the property promptly in the ten minutes, please.”
Hand over her heart her stomach rolled for a moment. It’s
much too late to turn back now, Colly. A voice in her head
that sounded eerily like her best friend Helene said. She could
still remember the look Hel and her mother had both sent her way
while Jeremy and Miriam had all but dry humped one another at
the other end of the table amongst their shared friends. In
reality everyone that had attended dinner that night Jeremy had
met through Colleen. It had gone without saying that everyone
there knew just how this evening was going to end and it didn’t
bode well for Mr. Groves. At all. Jeremy could very well kiss
his PR firm goodbye, the lavish lifestyle he had grown
accustomed to was rapidly slipping through his fingers with
every breath he took. He had no qualms about being the one that
Colleen doted on for the past six years. He’d grown spoiled and
bored while Colleen had flown around the world three times over
working catwalks and popping up in nearly every print ad for
everything from luxury clothing to cosmetics. He often joked
that he saw her face in print more than he saw her person and
with the cat away the mouse was surely going to play.
The solid thunk thud of the Italian leather hitting the wall to
wall carpet means next to nothing to him as he merely stares at
her for a moment.
“Running away are we? How very like you, Colleen. Y’know it
takes two to ruin a marriage.”
“I gave you everything. Everything you could ever want and
more.”
“Except your heart.”
“Don’t you see you’ve had at all along? You’re just too blinded
by greed and your own image to see it.”
Picking up his luggage she arranged it by the front door with a
sigh.
“Off to stay with Mummy are we?”
“I’m not the one that’s leaving.”
Silence.
“You can’t be serious Colleen.”
“Oh I’m very serious. All of your things have been packed and
it’s best that you stay with your mother until I’ve had the
papers drawn up.”
“What papers?”
“Divorce proceedings.”
“You can’t do that! Everything in this godforsaken place is half
mine by law! The cars, the boat, the business, your royalties.
Everything!”
Her face took on the porcelain mask she used well over these
past few months when it had all fallen into place for her.
Calm. Quiet. Still. Like a breathing statue.
“Two words for you to add onto your ever growing vocabulary,
dearest mine.”
Inching closure to him she sized him up with a predatory glare.
“Prenuptial agreement.”
Colleen watched as Jeremy’s left eye started to tick. Once,
twice, thrice. Mouth gaping like a fish he stood there dumbly as
his glass of scotch fell onto the pristine white carpet he had
loved.
“How can you be so cruel?”
Reaching out to gently pat his cheek Colleen smiled showing
gleaming white teeth and cold emerald eyes. Jeremy was sure
that the room’s temperature had dropped by at least ten degrees
and the lights began to flicker. Outside the wind howled and the
rain was coming down in sideways sheets. Was that thunder? How
could there be thunder in January?
“You don’t know just how cruel I can be, Jeremy. But in time
you’ll find out. They all do.”
For a split second Jeremy’s mind’s eye was flooded with image
after image of the men that had come before him. Ages, faces,
eras it stretched for eons yet Colleen stayed the same.
Beautiful glossy black locks, creamy white skin and glittering
emerald eyes that looked like they could see into your very
soul. So cold. He could have sworn that if he were to reach out
and touch her he would surely be turned to stone. Such cold
green eyes.
“What…are…you?”
He had blinked and there she was a hairs breadth between the two
of them. He could feel her perfect ruby tinted lips graze the
shell of his ear. A whisper that shook him to the depths of his
soul and made his heart stop for a moment was all he could hear.
“Your very worst nightmare my dear boy.”
The scream Jeremy Groves let out cut through the cold winter sky
as he ran from the sprawling estate never to return. In his
haste he'd left the luggage his soon to be ex spouse had packed
for him. The security patrol found him halfway down the winding
driveway scared out of his wits and rambling about emeralds and
were kind enough to give him a lift to nearest the cab stand so
he could spend some much needed time with his mother. Within
six months the society page had quietly announced the end of
Jeremy and Colleen Groves’ marriage. Colleen’s collection of
friends, or the Dear Ones as she had always been taken to
calling them weren’t surprised in the least. After all that was
what she got when she toyed with mortals but then again she was
only doing the job the Fates had bestowed upon her. Perhaps it
was for the best if she took up with one of her own kind this
time around? Mortal men surely didn't understand what her role
truly was until it was too late.

All of my muses are a little startled by this new development!
aha. I wasn't expecting that side of her to rear its head at
all, that was fascinating. I'm not surprised Jer responded the
way he did, out of pure fear, but the man honestly had that one
coming. I would totally love to see this side of her in threads
as well, it's such a good turn of events and now I'm wondering
all the more what her secrets are deep inside. Helene is as
surprised as all the others, honestly, as much as I am, but I'm
so intrigued. I totally want to know the ins and outs of this
lifestyle; the one she hides from the rest of the world.

Aha! Thank you so much! I've got to be honest, I had a ball
writing this for her. It's so out of the norm for her that it
was really something different. I'll officially make the verse
available to you if you'd like. Feel free to use it and call
upon Colleen any time you like. I'll keep posting snippets and
bits about it as I go because it's slowly being revealed to me.
Why she waited so long to unveil it is beyond me really.
