       Black Eyes / Blue Tears

( Black eyes, I don’t need ‘em / blue tears, gimme freedom /
black eyes, all behind me / blue tears’ll never find me now / /
definitely found my self esteem / finally, I’m forever free to
dream / no excuses, no more bruises .. )
‘ The only thing you’ll ever be good for is being a pushover
and a punching bag. I don’t know where you get this crazy idea
that somehow you’re worth anything more than that to anyone, ‘
Joel had been drinking, but one pint - nothing more, so it
didn’t excuse his aggressive behaviour toward her at all, yet
she cowered. ‘ And you left me.. who the fuck said you could do
that? ‘ he was now referring to her walking out on him over a
year ago and that, she understood then, was the real reason why
he had hammered on her apartment door.
Joel had never been able to let go of anything if it was
something done to him and he had no control over any of the
situations that placed him in that kind of position. He hated
the thought that she felt she could do better where he wasn’t
and that she could escape the hell he had created around her
every other day. Without alcohol, he had the same temperament,
so the woman he chosen to leave it all behind with the help of
her best friend and both of her cousins. Jesse, her eldest
cousin, had threatened Joel’s life at the time but the gruff
male hadn’t been around when she was moving her stuff out; he
was down at the pub and they had a window of about two hours to
get everything into boxes and shoved into the back of Joshua’s
truck before speeding off to her fathers.
‘ Did you think I wouldn’t go looking for you? ‘ he was
asking her directly now as she remained in one corner of the
sofa, cushion on her leg whilst she hugged it close to her
chest, crushing it in the tight embrace she found on it in an
attempt to ward off the fear. He was reckless at the best of
times, so she tried to keep her distance - with the knowledge
that he had beer all over his breath when he got too close for
comfort. The hard smack echoed, & it took her a full few seconds
to feel the sting of the mark he had probably left on the side
of her face, her mind a short distance behind falling off the
edge along with her body’s weakness as she crumbled. The force
of his fist hitting her sent her rocking to one side of the sofa
and she lay there, hand shielding the throbbing spot as he had
not yet finished going off on her for all of the things that he
       had made her do.
‘ Answer me, ‘ he almost roared, crouching down to where she
lay hunched over and pulling her hand away to inwardly gloat
over the mess he had made of her face, complete with tears that
seemed to coat it from the pain & the fury that slowly built in
her eyes. She hadn’t tried to hit him back once before but here
she was feeling a rush to do it and with her free hand that he
didn’t have an iron grip on, she forced it up from under the
cushion and too late to move from her attack, she clocked him
right in the jaw. Joel cursed something terrible, yelling every
kind of horrendous name to call her under his breath as he let
go of her hand and stumbled back a few feet. Standing on his now
wobbly legs a little easier, he crossed over to the shelf of
books on the other side of the room and there, he spotted a
framed photo of herself and someone he did not know; a man older
       than both of them.
With little care or concern for the repercussions of his
actions, he picked it up from its place and tossed it in her
general direction, the only words flying out of his mouth now in
relation to who the man was and whether or not she was screwing
him and the vulgar terms leaving him made her blood boil. Along
with the fact that he had now broken an important belonging as
well as one side of her face, Helene realised he was also
growing angrier and in her haste to be free from the situation
while he had his back turned, cussing and kicking items about,
she sped from off of the sofa and over to her apartment door
just as a knock sounded from it. Her frame paused, Joel now
silent as footsteps pounded over to where she was and he yanked
her back away from it, almost bruising her in his effort to keep
her from saying the wrong thing to whomever was on the other
side and with her back against the wall and his fingers closing
in around her throat in warning, she had to still the tremor in
       her voice first.
‘ Helene? ‘ Joey’s voice called through the door and she
almost whined, her whimpering through Joel’s hand an easy sound
to make out as the older male began knocking a little louder on
the door trying to gain access. He had probably assumed she was
merely crying and unwilling to answer, but still his
determination didn’t let up as calls, somewhere between calm and
concerned, filtered through the wood. ‘ Älskling, open the door,
       ‘ still, he tried.
Joel understood that he wouldn’t give up his attempts to get
in, so he probably had to find a way out through the window
instead, but not before he tossed Helene around the room, his
open hands smacking her about as he did so and her cries growing
louder until she fell back over the coffee table with a loud
thud. Her head bounced right off the side of the sofa cushion
and she hissed, that being the only real pain now that she was
on the floor - and that her attacker was trying to get his other
leg out of the open window before realising he couldn’t find a
way to actually get the rest of the way down, so he scurried
back in and made a bee-line for her bathroom as she got to her
feet and padded immediately over to the door, unbolting it and
barely getting it half open before she her whole being was
pulled into Joey’s arms long before he even looked at the damage
he had been listening to. His priority, though he knew there was
someone to take care of, was to mind his girl.
Helene broke down in his hold in a matter of seconds and her
weakness did not stop her from gripping tightly at his clothes
as he kept her close against him, his large hands coming up from
around her waist to cup either side of her face to see the pain
there. It was both in flaming red marks over her cheeks and in
the pooling tears of her sad brown eyes before a hiccup of an
apology left her. Joey silenced her apologies; she certainly
wasn’t whom a sorry was due from and after pressing a lasting
kiss to her forehead and asking her if she was alright to slip
to the car outside on her own and receiving a gentle nod, he
locked her apartment door as she walked out, with an overnight
bag over her shoulder and the broken framed photo of them both.
Everything else she had to collect so she could pack it into his
car for moving would be able to wait. She seemed to understand
his intentions after her backpack was handed over to her and he
stood watch in the doorway while she bagged a few things.
Joey wasn’t the violent type. He had no plans to beat the
other male senseless, as much as he might have been wanting to
and as much as he wished someone else would, he held off on
that. He was much more about letting people know their wrongs
with words, but he was very good at it. Joel had found a way for
months now to hurt the woman and he had somehow gotten away with
it for each time the musician was out of town or busy within the
city, but lucky for him, Joey and Helene had plans for that
       afternoon.
