Beige

* A/N: This little drabble was inspired by the song 'Beige' by
the Pistol Annies. As far as Mickey and Colleen have hinted
they're quite happy with Sarah for the time being. Although
they've hinted that a little boy would be a very happy addition
to the Donnelly family, especially if he was named Sullivan
William Michael Donnelly, after there of his parents good
friends. But more about that later. ;)*
“Hold your flowers lower, Colly and for land’s sakes stand up
straight.”
This was certainly not how Colleen had envisioned her wedding,
in her head she had wanted a beach front wedding at the start of
the summer. But this, she wasn’t even sure what this entire
thing was. Her mother, Eileen called it a small miracle as she
herself had planned the entire affair spending nearly next to
nothing, even the cake had been bought half price because the
wedding it had been destined to be the centerpiece of had been
called off.
‘Wonder if it’s too late for me to run?'
Colleen thought to herself as her mother fussed over her one
last time before adjusting the matching veil one last time.
Judging by the swell of her stomach and the shoes she was
wearing something told her that she'd only be running in her
dreams these days. If waddling away was an option that might
still work. Huffing in annoyance at her mother's attentions to
the veil she blew her bangs out of her eyes. Aforementioned veil
like her dress, was bought off the rack three towns over and was
a horrid shade of beige. Her flowers, bought on sale from the
florist just two towns over had been left overs of whatever had
been in stock, blush colored roses and tiny white daisies. The
only bright spot had been the fact that Mickey Donnelly,
otherwise known as her boyfriend and father to be of her child,
hadn’t had to be threatened to ask her for her hand in marriage.
They had spent the better part of the first two months of her
pregnancy trying to quietly get married at the courthouse but
Colleen’s mother had insisted on a church wedding, admittedly
not a Catholic wedding because, as Eileen put it, ‘what would
everyone in town think?’ So she had insisted on their marriage
taking place in the one and only Baptist church on the outskirts
of town. The reception that was to follow was to be held at
Mickey’s parents place over across the state line in Derry. Only
a thirty minute car ride, if Mickey’s truck actually started. If
it didn’t they were looking at an hour. What’s the worst that
everyone could assume? They would be legally married and next to
everyone who had received an invitation knew just by looking at
Colleen just why they were getting married. Colleen shifted a
bit and peeked through the church doors and spotted her groom,
looking just the tiniest bit rough around the edges. His shirt
was wrinkled, his boutonniere was wilting but he looked
nervously happy. His groomsmen on the other hand looked like
they had practically just stepped out from the bar minutes ago.
‘Oddly enough that’s probably how we ended up in this situation.
Damn wine coolers. Damn Mickey and his dark brown eyes. Damn my
inability to turn away from romance.’
A reedy rendition of the wedding march sounded. To her it almost
sounded sad as she made her way down the aisle of the obscenely
tiny church. It was then that her child decided to gift it’s
mother with a swift kick to her left kidney. Five months in and
this child was destined to be either be a Rockette or a kicker
for the Patriots. God she prayed that there weren’t two of them
in there. Mickey turned his gaze to her and offered her his
hand, giving her a gentle squeeze of reassurance.
The entire wedding took perhaps twenty minutes, the preacher had
been a kind older gentleman who reminded Colleen of her own
Grandfather. Good grief, their child would only have three
grandparents. This left a hole in her heart the more she thought
about it. Why couldn’t she have gotten married two years ago
when her father was still in the picture? Why had Jimmy just up
and left without so much a note? Come to think of it Jimmy
couldn’t stand Mickey from the moment he met him so perhaps it
was for the best.
The drive to reception was a bit touch and go as Mickey’s
groomsmen piled into the back of the tiny hatchback that the
newlyweds had purchased as an upgrade from Col’s old VW only a
month ago, right around the time they signed the lease on a
trailer in the mobile home park near his parents. Eileen had
even ‘gifted’ them the money for the deposit because she had
been so afraid of what the other people in town would think of
the ‘entire situation.’ Colleen had very nearly lost it when she
heard her mother refer to her impending grandchild in such a
cold way but Mickey handled with great ease and defused the
situation before words were said that would cause an even bigger
rift between the two Murphy women.
Bugsy and Billy had taken turns holding the other up each time
the car was pulled over. Colleen had tried in vain not to throw
up herself at the sounds of their retching but had nearly lost
what little breakfast she had eaten. The reception had a few
bright spots, Colleen’s best friend and maid of honor had
assured her that in a few months time they would look back on
this and be happy they had documented it, she was the lucky one
to catch the bouquet. Mickey had managed to find a DJ that was
willing to play Aerosmith as their first dance, much to Eileen’s
horror, and the cake was actually quite good even if it had been
just the tiniest hint stale. Maybe, just maybe they were going
to make it. All they could was try and hope and raise their
child in a house filled with love, as they themselves had been.
It might not be much but that little one would never have a lack
of people that loved and cared for them. Colleen and Mickey also
vowed that if they did have a daughter she would able to plan
her own wedding if she so chose, she could even elope with their
blessing if it came down to it.
"You don't think it's twins though...do you Col?"
"Mickey, if you jinx me I swear to God I'll divorce you."
"You so totally wouldn't and you know it."
"Alright...you've got me there, I wouldn't. But we'll find out
when get to the clinic next week. Could be triplets for all we
know."
"Colleen no...that's not even funny. My Aunt Doreen had
triplets."
"Isn't she your father's sister?"
"Yeah..why...oh no..."
"You are never ever coming near me again, Michael Donnelly."

I think my favourite thing about this beautifully sentimental
piece is the exchange between Colleen & Mickey at the very end.
I don't think I've chuckled as much in a while, so kudos to you
and your muses for the added humour! I always like drabbles and
bits and pieces about Mickey because he honestly is, I believe,
a preference of mine when it comes to Col's relations. Plus, it
fast approaching summertime now just makes more sense for it to
be that way, too. I love of course that they are both tied into
the Perfect Storm crew / storyline also ( one of many reasons
why this ship is way up there, probably no.1 for me, although I
do love her with Jackie and Cage, also ).
