Things that will always have a place near and dear to your heart

Besides the plethora of books I accumulated over my childhood (
mostly fairytales and fantasy novels ) and the television
series' Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and Farscape as well
as a love affair with the band Savage Garden; I can vividly
remember scrimping and saving my allowance to buy a copy of
American McGee's Alice. My world took a delightfully dark turn
when I first saw the TV spot for the game and I knew I had to
have it. After much saving and a butt load of hard work and a
bit of begging because I was only ten my mother bless her,
allowed me to get it. We had just bought our first computer and
at the time it and the game were supposedly 'top of the line'.
My mind was blown by the graphics and the plot because I was a
sucker for all things Alice ( still am. I felt like a kid at
Christmas when the second one came out. ) and for some reason it
burrowed itself into my heart and hasn't let go. What about you?

I know well of this game! although I have only ever played the
sequel, Madness Returns ( and that was also through a laptop so
I'm not totally sure if it would have been the same / similar
kind of experience ). I think as a child, though, I rarely found
fascination in the darker products, but it wasn't until I'd
reached the age of 12 / 13 that I actually stopped playing video
games. I remember my collection that I had for my PS1 and none
were, now that I think about it, all that exciting! but there
was one game that I have kept over the years because I couldn't
part with it and even though I have no way to play it now, it's
still safely tucked away. It was Rugrats: Search for Reptar and
I don't think I'll ever quite get over that. The graphics were
awful, but I loved the storylines and each of the different
games you could play within the actual game, it's was great fun.
It was as soon as the teen years hit that I started to fall a
little into the dark genre of things and one of the first things
I can remember buying was a Cradle of Filth album ( huge mistake
) and I was either 13 or 14 at the time, because it wasn't that
long after I started secondary school I don't think. I went a
little Filth crazy around that time; I was absolute goth in
appearance and looking back on it now, kind of loathe that
because it wasn't a good look for me, aha. I had the black chain
pants, the net top, my hair was cropped to my shoulders and
midnight black and I looked awful. I'm even surprised I cut my
hair for that one.
I think it was all the hairbands that saved me from that one,
because it was midway through my fascination with Dani Filth and
the like that I came across Guns N Roses, Europe and Bon Jovi on
one of the music channels and I remember it specifically because
I was at my dad's house and it was summer and it was blazing
heat outside so all of the windows were open and he used to have
the front and back door wedged open so the cool air could blow
through, and that was when I first heard Sweet Child O' Mine.
That gave me a little ( or a lot ), of a shift in the right
direction and whilst I still love the aesthetic of Filth things,
it's not deeply routed anymore. My pre-teen years were filled
with all things Care Bears and Rainbow Brite and I'll never be
able to forget any of that. My nanna also used to collect barbie
dolls for me and each time I went to their bungalow after school
on a Friday to stay until Sunday, there was either one or two
new dolls waiting for me. I suppose I was collecting them in
that sense, though I did at one point ask her to stop because I
ended up elbows deep in barbie dolls and unfortunately had to
toss a bunch of them a few years ago. I tried to keep them all
but had two shopping bags full and a lot were wrecked by that
point. I kept only one in memory of and it was always my
favourite, so she is safe amongst all my stuffed toys. I think
it's actually the memory of the lighter kids stuff that sticks
with me most, especially as I associate those things with being
at my grandparents house.

Aha! I never had the chance to play Rugrats: The Search for
Reptar but I certainly remember seeing it advertised over here.
My love affair with PC games ( and gaming in general has always
been a bit hit or miss. I suppose I'm picky but with the price
of some of them I'd like to think I can be. Oh my lord, I'd give
my eye teeth to have had a gran like that. Although I really
think your gran and my great aunt Elva would have gotten along
famously. ( Elva and my grandmother were worlds apart in
personality although my Gran did gift me a few battered
fairytale books but that was about it.) I honestly have always
thought there was no better thing for a child than a well loved
toy that has seen them through. It's always wonderful that those
things remind you of time spent at your grandparents house. I
dearly loved the Care Bears when I was small ( my favorites
being Grumpy and Tenderheart ). I think I've mentioned this
before but I also enjoyed Lady Lovely Locks, I ended up with a
ton of hand me down toys from my cousin so I'll always associate
it with my Aunt and Uncle's house.
Oh my word! Our school dress code was adamantly against the
chain pants and net tops but how I wanted them in the worst way.
For some reason they were okay with tons of black, crushed
velvet and brocade though, figure that one out. All of which I
wore and adored, I looked like an Anne Rice reject but I thought
I was fab. My goth phase wasn't as prevalent during middle
school but really took off during High School. I also stuck out
like a sore thumb because of the hair ( Lydia Deetz and Robert
Smith had a love child there )...and the cape. ( I certainly
didn't make life easy for myself back then did I? ) I passed
Home Ec with that thing Freshman year so it was a win win until
it got slammed in a car door and nearly strangled me. I still
find myself gravitating to the darker side of things every now
and then, perhaps I'm hard wired for it? I will freely admit
that I do still collect stuffed animals although I do try to
keep it at bay since the chihuahua get the itch to chew things
once in a while. I know right before I moved out the first time
I donated quite a few boxes of childhood books and stuffed toys
to the local thrift store and the nursery school and kept a few
that were very near and dear to me, a stuffed lion and a teddy
bear in particular.
