Birthday present. ;D You've been so much more than an awesome
friend my dear, you've been awesome, amazing and downright
wonderful! Enjoy Soul Sister o' Mine.
Summary: Sometimes we walk this world all alone...or so we
       think.

The Buck Moon { July } Lia
She heard a lone cry sound to her from further off down the
trail. No one else ever used these trails, especially now that
all the other packs had left the area or had been driven out by
the two legged non shifters. Part of her wanted to call back but
the other part of her, the human side, urged that it wasn’t
safe. She had tried to scent him - at least she hoped it was a
him - but had no luck, the only scents she ended up picking up
on were that of the rabbits that had scurried on into the
underbrush and dense scent of pine sticky and clinging to
       everything.
“Find him. He sounds lonely. As lonely as you feel.”
She thought to herself before she stretched and left her little
ledge overlooking the lake before running deeper onto the trail
kicking up dust as she went. When she’d successfully run herself
ragged she retreated back to her den only to find something was
off. Someone had been here. He had been there. She gave a small
growl as she caught his scent - leather, dust, and..some kind of
berries with a syrupy note. She knew that smell from somewhere,
she’d smelt it two moons ago but it had been faint and just
enough to give a tingle and think perhaps that he was the one
for her. He was long gone but his scent filled her space,
usually she would have run back to the rental cottage she called
home every month but for some reason she didn’t - she just laid
down on the bed of pine boughs and drifted off trying to put a
face to the scent and wondering if he was the one that had
called to her. She could have sworn she’d heard a half howl that
winged with a whimper from across the lake.
       The Hunter’s Moon { October } Caleb
Find her! Must find the one that smells of wildflowers and
vanilla, and cherries. Find the one that smells of home.
His wolf was having an internal fit and there wasn’t much he
could except pace his apartment. Two moons had passed since he’d
been up to the lake during the change. That was when he’d
smelled her on the wind and tried calling to her. He’d ended up
following her scent through the woods and came across her den,
it had been small - a mere overhang of a cliff with a few pine
boughs as bedding - but to him it was heaven. His head swam as
he tried to right himself, something he’d never had to do when
he was on all four feet before and he almost failed. He waited
for her to return almost wanting to curl up in her den but he
didn’t. After three hours he went back to his own den on the
other side of the lake and let out one final howl hoping she’d
       heard him.
In his human form Caleb Bledig was a quiet man, preferring to
keep himself to himself and go about his business, which dealt
with the selling of antiques and rare books. He’d had a good
year, it seemed that everyone and their brother wanted some sort
of old text or collectible tomb; he chalked it up to the
steampunk movement that had taken another turn in popularity. It
was fine by him but how much money could one man make and spend
on himself? Perhaps it all the time he’d spent alone for the
last decade. He wasn’t a bad looking guy, or so his mother had
told him - but the fact that his furry little problem popped up
once a month - twice if there was a blue moon- made it very hard
to actually be in a relationship. Until he’d found her, or
rather smelt her. He had been told that mated pairs existed but
he never put much stock in them because around these parts of
Maine it was unheard of, especially with the established packs
moving out and going west, that’s why he’d been left. He hadn’t
wanted to go and now he was paying for it it seemed. A part of
him, the human side; rationalized that he’d never find her it
had been a whim that he’d had that sort of reaction to scent but
the wolven side - the base instinct he’d grown up with had told
him that she was out there and to find her before the Wolf Moon
had risen. It had been drilled into him since he’d come of age
that any wolf worth their salt found their mate, soul attached
or not, by the age of thirty-five. His father’s uncle had waited
to try and find his match by the time he was forty and it almost
didn’t end well for him, he’d gone half feral by the time he’d
found her. Their attempts to have a pup were almost fruitless
until his second cousin Royal had been born and everyone
wondered about him, he’d always been a bit quieter than the rest
of the family, probably a result of his father’s advanced age
and his mother’s desperation. The entire pack held onto some of
their baser wolf like instinct while still in human form except
him. But once in his pelted form was a force to be reckoned
with, he’d been known to take on alphas from other neighboring
packs and not be seen for days after the Moon only to come home
battered and bloodied with an uncharacteristic smirk etched onto
his face. Royal, the last anyone had heard from him was overseas
somewhere, probably in his native England, working as a nature
photographer and living happily with his mate, whom he had yet
to introduce to the pack. Rumors had circulated that he’d turned
her, on accident of course but turned her none the less.
       “That won’t happen to me.”
He said to himself as he hefted another box of books out of the
back room and started his inventory.
But it could if you don’t find her.
His wolf whispered before settling down to rest.
Caleb let out a low growl before throwing the box of books
across the room, narrowly missing the antique mirror and hitting
the ancient harpsichord instead. He glanced at the calendar and
his heart started to hammer in his chest. He only had three more
months because the insanity started to creep in.
Another growl escaped him before he yanked his coat from it’s
hook and stalked out to the front door and turned over the sign
to closed and went off in search of a cup of coffee and a
danish. As he rounded the corner of Walnut and Quincy avenue he
smelled her but it was warmer this time and stronger. His gut
clenched as he scented the air only to get stared at by his
fellow pedestrians. He had to follow her, to find her. He darted
out across the cross walk only to narrowly miss being hit by a
taxi that thought it could make it before the walk sign changed.
“Where the hell do ya think you’re goin’,buddy?!”
Caleb’s inner wolf let out a growl and made himself known by
changing his other wise sea blue eyes a brilliant gold hue as
his human side silently flipped the driver off and growled.
“It’s called the pedestrian right of way, dick weed.”
She was turning down onto Stone street and going…where was she
going? He picked up the pace and almost broke out into a run.
He’d almost run over a little old lady that was coming out of
her apartment and just managed to sprint past a gaggle of young
mothers that were out and about with their children when he
spotted her. Her long chocolate tresses shining in the autumn
sun, her scent almost making him swoon. She was wearing a deep
plum colored pea coat and then she was stopping..why was she
stopping and turning? His eyes widened as she turned around and
he finally saw her face. Large doe like eyes the color between
fine whiskey and milk chocolate looked at him before they
flashed a deep gold. A sweet smile playing her lips and she was-
holy crap she was coming toward him! That was when he’d heard
her, not physically but mentally, as clear he’d heard his wolf
       his entire life.
Hello, are you the wolf from the lake?
At that exact moment he’d never heard a voice so sweet which was
why he failed to hear two men from the local moving company yell
to him to watch out as their fun away trolley rolled his way. He
still heard her voice or thought he did when the upright piano
sent him sailing through the air and back down onto the pavement
       with a sickening thud.
       Hunter’s Moon ( Lia )
“Leather, dust, and blueberries and syrup? Man, you’ve got an
       interesting mate there, Lia.”
This was why she rarely brought up her Moon discoveries to
anyone, let alone family. Her cousin Susi though meant it in the
best of ways. Had Lia called her mother to try and explain it
her mother would have rushed to get to the point, Susi, on the
other hand wanted every last detail. Partially because the
“family curse” hadn’t presented in her until she’d met her mate
and partially because she was just naturally curious.
“Maybe your he wolf’s got a thing for blueberry pancakes with
maple syrup? Remember the time I had trying to figure out Roy?
It took me weeks to figure out that Mr. tall, red and geeky had
       a sweet tooth.”
Lia smiled at the memory of her cousin calling her at her wit’s
end describing her mate, who had just moved in next door and
       drove her nuts.
“Could be, but I don’t think he’s that complicated, Susi.
Really. If you could have heard him though, he sounded so…so
lonely. I went back last month and heard him but I can’t trace a
       trail. Maybe I’m going nuts?”
“Nah, you’re nowhere near old enough for that yet. When you hit
       29 then you can worry.”
A sly smile overtook her face but she bit back her comment. The
line crackled from the overseas call and Lia winced.
“Sorry! I didn’t mean to twist the chord. These damn lines over
here are so touchy besides this damn cottage is…”
Her cousin was cut off by a loud boom and a strangled yelp.
“Gotta go he’s fallen through the thatch…again. Why he tries to
patch it himself is beyond me. Oh! I sent you a package, the
tracker said it’s been delivered. Enjoy them! Love you tell
everyone I said hi and we’ll be over for Christmas..hopefully if
       Roy hasn’t broken anything.”
The line went dead before Lia could even say a word and she was
left holding the phone with a small smile. Her cousin’s life
with her mate was never dull to say the least and she wondered
if hers would be the same.
If you ever find him. He’s looking for you you know.
Her wolf said as Lia hung up her phone and went back to her
sketches. Her work as a children’s book illustrator had slowed
at the moment but there was always the greeting card business to
fall back on. She glanced down at her sketchbook and found a
varying array of facial sketches in what she thought her mate
would or could look like. She bit back a whine as she threw her
pencil across the room as the loneliness seeped in. Her pack had
dwindled down to a mere nothing, her parents were gone so all
she truly had left were her aunt who had moved down south and
her cousin who had followed her mate abroad, this year they had
settled in the Welsh country side of Crickhowell and were quite
happy. So it was she who remained here in Maine. Alone or so
she’d thought until she’d found him.
But you haven't yet have you? You’re still alone. Find him
before the Wolf Moon. He’ll go mad if you don’t.
She shuddered at the thought, she’d seen it only once before,
when her mother’s friend had put off finding her mate she ended
up feral and a hermit out in the woods Oregon. That wouldn’t be
her though, she’d find him and well before the Wolf Moon. She
went through her other sketches and went about clipping the
storyboards and notes together before slipping them into their
mailer envelope. She was hoping the author would finally like
them because if she had to draw one more dancing flower she
would personally hunt them down and give them a good tongue
lashing…or worse a swift nip. She checked her watch and swore
under her breath, if she wanted to over night these she’d better
hop to it because in a few hours she’d be going out of town. She
slapped the sticker onto the envelope and shoved it into her
purse before grabbing her coat and running out of her apartment
and into the chilly autumn air. The smell of fall was all around
her and the excitement for Halloween was all around her. If the
two leggers only knew that the things they dressed up as were
really out there she wasn’t sure how they’d take it but she
still couldn’t help but smile at their enthusiasm.
She wandered past the bakery where she bought her weekly bread
and the florist where she always bought her bi weekly bouquet of
season flowers without fail. This town was home, yet it wasn’t.
It hadn’t felt like it was for some time now and it was
maddening to her. It wasn’t the fact that her only family
members were so far from her it was the fact that he was right
under her nose and she still couldn’t find him. Could it be that
he was newly turned and unsure of himself or worse yet - scared
of what he was? She hadn’t picked up on that when she’d smelt
his scent all over her den at the lake. Fear was always stronger
than any other scent and it always managed to turn her stomach
no matter who it came from, two-legger or shifter, to her it
smelled of moldy leaves and sick. She shuddered at the thought
as she ambled down onto Walnut and Quincy and stopped to drop
some change into the awaiting guitar case of a busker before
moving on. She took in the bright golds and reds of the trees as
she went breathing the crisp scent of fall once again. She
offered a toothy smile to a gaggle of school children who were
ogling a nearby shop window and having a lively debate as to of
their group was going to be dressed up Princess Elsa this year.
As she rounded down onto Stone she stopped.
       He’s here!
Her inner wolf cried out before Lia fully turned around to see a
harried looking man with sea blue eyes and long dark hair, a
warm shearling lined coat enveloped him as his scent almost
knocked her down. She couldn't help but smile at him.
Well, only one way to see if I can get his attention.
She thought to herself as she mentally introduced herself to
him, as he stood there stalk still. He stared at her opened
mouth and raised his hand in greeting as his face took on the
color of a tomato. It was only then that she’d noticed the piano
coming at him and then saw him fly up into the air and come back
down like some sort of cartoon character. She ran to him through
the crowd of people and knelt beside his unconscious form as
someone dialed 911. Five minutes later the paramedics showed up
and loaded him into the back of an ambulance and reluctantly let
her go with him after her inner wolf pulled a few strings. As
they checked him over he finally came to and gave her a weak
smile. Tests were done at the local urgent care wing of the
hospital and he was given a clean bill of health minus the bumps
       and bruises.
       “What happened?”
“You were hit by a run away piano.”
“Oh god, I’m like Wylie Coyote.”
“Well, you would have been had it been an anvil. You never
answered my question by the way.”
“Well, I was going to but y’know I was a little busy getting run
over. Yes, my den’s on the other side of the shore of the lake.
It’s closer to my rental cottage.”
Lia gave him a smile and her wolf howled inwardly with joy.
       “I’m Caleb by the way.”
“Pleasure to meet you, Caleb, I'm Lia. So, are you free for the
       Moon rise tonight?”
“As far as I know, you?”
“Yup, you wouldn’t happen to like blueberry pancakes would you?”
Caleb managed a small shy smile as he colored slightly as they
       crossed the street.
       “I do actually, do you?”
“I do indeed and I happen to know a place that makes some of the
best you’ve ever had, it’s right next to this neat little
antique store I sometimes poke around in I’ve never met the
owner though. He’s always off on Saturdays.”
A stronger more wolfish grin broke out across Caleb’s features.
“Yeah, I heard he’s a pretty private guy, can never be tracked
down during a full moon..until now.”
They walked on down the street arm and arm that day and every
day onward. Two wolves were no longer all alone in the world.
Happiness both inward and outward had been found, and just in
       the nick of time.

I am actually crying, this is that unexpected and beautiful. You
are such an inspiration to me and my writing and your knowledge
regarding many things never ceases to amaze me. Incredible
writing and very, very well written. I don't know how you manage
it and I definitely did not deserve this as a birthday gift!
honestly, the idea alone that you have written a fic for me does
have me all emotional and I don't know how to thank you enough.
I've not been feeling too grand over the last few days and this
has lifted that shadow completely. I couldn't stop smiling as I
was reading it and, as mentioned, I also have tears rolling down
my cheeks; it's that wonderful. Thank you so much for writing
this —— you are far too nice to me ❤

Oh my dear you're welcome! I was actually nervous to post it
because I know wolves are very near and dear to you but that
damn dream got to me and I thought to myself "I'm going to do
it!" so I did. I'm so sorry to hear you've been down these past
few days but I'm thrilled to hear that this helped you, hun.
Anytime you need cheering let me know that I'll think of
something for you, it's the least I can do for you. *hugs* I'm
honored to know that I inspire you - I mean that's the biggest
and not to mention the nicest most sincere compliment I've ever
gotten in my life. I dare say the nature channel came in handy
for this piece { as did my little thing for a certain wolf like
       fictional professor ;) }
I can remember having to write my first "big" essay when I was
in elementary school and it was on the grey wolf and going to
the local library and cleaning out whatever they had on the
subject, years later that morphed into an interest in the
workings of pack mentalities and the alpha/beta relationship. I
hope I did them justice and please know that any time you have
full right to use Caleb and Lia if the mood strikes, they're
       yours now. :-)
