Still Loving You

This...is just a bit of fluff with language. I've fallen quite
hard for Matthew Mcconaughey recently, it's got to be the
accent...and the eyes and True Detective that did me in. ;D

Summary: Twyla Jean Cooper's life in the sleepy little town of
Starling Oklahoma was going along just fine. Well, until fate
stepped in one night and paired her off with a lanky trucker
with a lovely Texas drawl who could two step with the best of
them. Weeks pass and things start to go pear shaped when she
realizes that he left her with much more than his prized long
horn belt buckle.

I'm kind of in lust with this at the moment. Your banner is
beautiful, as always and your playlist is absolutely to die for;
definitely following and saving as many of those as I can. The
fashion of all four characters — love it all; especially all
that purple that Lettie seems to be wearing ;) cannot wait for
this one to begin!

Aww why thank you my dear! I couldn't help myself with putting
Lettie in purple, I just had to do it. ;) On a side note I
almost used Heath Ledger for Jack's face claim, I noticed a few
of your posts with the Joker but Gary won out over all. The muse
and I are working away on this one. I seriously can't wait for
an update from you though! You've got us both over the moon over
here! *hugs*

A/N: Without the lovely and amazing Lisa-Marie this probably
would have been shelved never to see the light of day. Thank you
my dear, for everything. This is a bit revised from it's
original. (the original contained a bathroom scene in the diner
but I had to change it, after all it is a family diner. ;) )
All characters within this story are mine unless otherwise
stated. Please, feel free to contact me if you wish to post my
work elsewhere. I don't bite. Enjoy!
Starling Oklahoma ( July )
Everyone's got their lot in life, their destiny if you will.
Mine was mapped out even before I was a twinkle in my parents
eyes. I, Twyla Jean Cooper am a waitress. Just like my Mama and
Granny before me. Pretty sure Great Gran was one too, although
it's said that she actually owned her cafe in the outskirts of
Georgia but that's up for some debate amongst the family. I'm
the person you see every day, bright smile plastered on my face
as I write out your order and ask you if you'd like a side of
fries or applesauce as a side, if you need more coffee, if your
screaming child would like another place mat to doodle on. I'm
also the person that sometimes gets tipped in pennies and the
person that'll look the other way if you happen to be a few
cents short for your order, just don't tell my boss. For the
most part I love my job, each day is a challenge but it was all
worth while, yes, most nights my feet are killing me when I got
home, yes I sometimes smell like the food I serve, and yes I
occasionally have a headache or a sore throat from shouting
orders over the clanging and sizzling sounds in the kitchen but
I wouldn't trade it for the world. Each day brings something new
into my life, people from all walks of life and every place
imaginable came into Lefty's for their dose of simple southern
Americana. Which I dole out with a bright smile and free glass
of water. Lefty's is a small diner just on the outskirts of
town, you blink and you'll miss us. The town of Starling is
small in and of itself, it's a courthouse, corner
grocery/pharmacy, two churches, the diner, a bar, and a two in
post office and bank and that's about it. Well, unless you
counted the big box store that's over the border in Jenks. If
you were to ask any trucker from Seattle to Maine and everywhere
in between and they'll tell you that you'd best stop in for a
slice of buttermilk pie or the meatloaf, that's the town's claim
to fame besides having such nice residents. In my ten years at
Lefty's I'd heard my fair share of road stories, most of them
were about how a rookie had failed to check his doors or tie
down a load and had half of it fly off the back of the trailer,
as well as my fair share of horror stories like when one of the
West Coast drivers lost control after hitting ice on up in
Vermont or Maine and wrapped his rig around a tree. I always
included these guys in my nightly prayers because Lord knows
they need it. Today was just another day, or so I'd thought. It
was then that he'd walked in road worn in need of a shave and
looking like he needed a good meal and a nap. I didn't recognize
him. He sat himself down at table nine and quietly went over his
logbook as he stretched his long jean clad legs out under the
table. At first glance he seemed like any other driver but there
was something about him that drew me in like a moth to a flame.
Maybe it was my lack of a significant other or my curiosity
because he'd never stopped in before.
Definitely not one of my regulars. Oh and seems to be quite at
home in my section.. I hope those boots of his are clean. Even
if they're not I don't care with those eyes and those cheekbones
he could hold the place up and I wouldn't care, just as long as
he took me with him..”
I thought to myself as I finished filling up the sugar
dispensers and wiping down the counter. I was only aware that I
was all but ogling the poor man when he looked over at me and
gave me a nod and a slight smirk of a smile making me blush as
red as my hair. If I could have dug a hole to disappear right
there I would have. I hurriedly grabbed a set of wrapped
flatware, a menu, and glass of ice water and backtracked toward
his table, my cheeks still stung with embarrassment and I was
almost positive my eyes were as big as dinner plates but there
wasn't much I could do about that now, I was the only waitress
on for this shift. I did my best to put on a sunny smile as I
told him the specials of the day and tried ever so hard not to
get tongue tied as he looked me straight in the eye.
“Could you repeat those again for me, sugar? I didn't quite get
that last one.”
I almost missed that twinkle in his eye and couldn't help but
smile. He had a Texas drawl that was sweeter and lazier than
molasses in the winter time.
“Our specials of the day are the knife and fork hot turkey
sandwich, the black and blue burger basket, or the barbeque
brisket platter with your choice of two sides and cornbread.
Lemon ice box pie is our dessert of the day. Fresh made this
morning by yours truly.”
His eyes never once left mine, something that normally would
have unnerved me seemed to make my heart skip a beat. I felt
myself turn red again as he mentally mulled over his order. This
gave me a few seconds to take in his overall appearance, not
half bad even with a mustache he was sporting. By the looks of
his company shirt he was one of the OTR drivers that we usually
got, probably based from Austin or Dallas with that drawl of
his, his sandy colored hair was long but kept neatly pulled
back, jeans and boots were well broken in and from the patch
stitched onto the right of his canvas work shirt his name was
Duke.
Well, he's certainly got noble features, straight nose, nice
lips, very nice clear blue eyes. I wouldn't kick him out of my
bed any time soon.
My own thoughts caught me off guard and I inwardly cringed and
felt my face go flush again. The sound of his voice brought me
back for a second making it even more awkward.
“How about some of that brisket with a side of mashed potatoes
and collard greens? Oh and a slice of that ice box pie, please..
He looked at the name tag that was pinned to the right of my
apron strap, I noticed that for a split second I could hear my
own heartbeat thrumming in my ears.
“Twyla.”
If I could have fainted right there I would have but instead I
just took down his order and tried my best to wobble back to the
kitchen window on shaky knees. I felt his eyes on me as I walked
away and for some reason I was totally fine with it, especially
when I heard what surely sounded like an appreciative sigh as he
stared. I fought back the urge to put an extra sway in my hips
but decided against it.
“Order of 3-2-1 Ribs with a side of fog and a wreath.”
Lenny the line cook for the day shift looked at me and shook his
head as he got to work on the order.
“Girlie you look right shook up. What happened? You drop the
creamer cows again?”
“Oh cram it, Lenny. I'm fine..and it's been five years since I
dropped anything.”
Lenny looked past me to table nine and smirked. A knowing glint
sparkled in his eyes as he went about grabbing a plate from the
dish wrack.
“Reminds me of me and Verna when we were young. I dare say that
you got it bad for Mr. 9 over there. I know you're a smart
cookie so I don't have to tell you twice but girl you'd better
go on and get you some before he leaves. The very least give him
your number.”
My face went from red to crimson to deep cranberry in a matter
of seconds as I shushed him before busying myself with wiping
down the lunch counter.
As soon as I'd finished wiping down the left side of the counter
it dawned on me that I'd forgotten to ask him what he'd like to
drink. I honestly had to search myself for the courage to get
back over there and ask him. He must have thought I was some
sort of ditz as I walked back over this time offering a pot of
regular and one of the heavy diner mugs.
“It's on the house, I completely blanked on asking you what you
wanted to drink when I took down your order. If you'd like
something else just let me know. We've got sweet tea or Coke if
that's more your thing, Duke.”
He looked taken aback as he tried to figure out how I knew his
name. I titled my head toward his shirt and he looked down.
“Damn, I keep forgetting about this damn shirt. Coffee's fine,
great even. I've been living off Mountain Dew for the past three
days.”
I pulled a face which for some reason made him laugh.
“My feelings exactly but when you've got double loads to deliver
you turn to anything legal that'll keep you awake. Say, when you
put in my order back there it didn't sound like any English I've
ever heard.”
I'd almost forgotten the diner lingo I'd grown up with and used
daily, it must have sounded foreign to him. A lot of places
didn't even bother to use it but we still did, the owner
insisted that it had a certain charm and brought it more
customers. Since I was just a waitress I kept my mouth shut and
went with what was said, I needed this job there was no way I'd
be moving back in with Mama and Granny. My living at home days
were well behind me.
“Think of it like diner CB chatter. 3-2-1 ribs is the brisket,
fog is mashed potatoes, and wreath which usually stands for
cabbage is used around here for collard greens.”
Blue eyes sparkled as he looked at me, something about that look
made the pit of my stomach flip flop and burn. He lazily picked
up his coffee cup and held it out for me to fill.
“Maybe you can give me a primer on that diner vernacular one of
these days.”
I caught that twang in his voice that made my knees go to jelly
again as my hand almost slipped. If he kept talking that way I'd
end up spilling some seriously hot java onto him.
Play it cool, play it cool. Don't burn him just stay calm. He's
looking at you. Say something. Say something, anything just make
it logical. SAY SOMETHING!
The voice in my head screamed.
“Well, now I don't know. I'm sure with all that trucker lingo
you've got rolling around in your head it's apt to give you a
headache if I added new information.”
Another spark hit and you could almost hear the sizzle in the
air. You could probably cut the tension with a butter knife at
this point.
“Not if it was your phone number.”
Without so much as a second thought to who he truly was I found
myself setting myself up for a night of fun.
“If you're free tonight I get off at eight, there's a bar down
the road called Clancy's. It's right past the trailer park, meet
me there. I'll be at the bar with a few friends. I think you
need a night of fun.”
Duke looked at me that small smirk turned into a Cheshire cat
grin, that twinkle intensifying as his voice dropped.
“Sugar for you I'd be there in a heartbeat. I'll be in town for
another week, short runs around here and you sure sound like the
kind of fun I need. Clancy's at eight.”
Before I could say anything else there was a yelp from the
kitchen.
“Twyla, Order up!”
I rushed off to pick up his order and tally up with check but
not before I added my phone number to the back of his receipt.
“Enjoy your meal and I'll see you at eight.”
I said as I refilled his coffee mug and placed his dessert in
front of him. As I went in back to do a quick inventory of
creamer and sugar packs I heard a whoop from the otherwise quiet
diner.
“Hot damn I got a date and her number!”
Lenny looked at me as he cleaned off the grills and shook his
head.
“I didn't think you had it in you girlie but done did it.”
I feigned innocence and looked at him with an almost sheepish
smile as I blushed.
“Who? Me? Me give my number out to someone I barely know and
ask him out in the same day? I don't know what you're talking
about, Len.”
Lenny shook his head again as he chuckled.
“Man you gotta watch these red heads, boy. He's not gonna know
what hit him before too long.”
