Summary
Four million dollars has been given to Cody and her family
through means of charity due to a kidnapping gone wrong and the
need to dispose of the money involved. Alek was believed to have
been killed during his last successful mission, but he is still
very much alive and on the hunt for the money that belongs to
him. What will happen when he realises half of that money has
been spent? How can Cody pay him back what she owes?
Characters
Alek {Oded Fehr}
Cody {Alicia Silverstone}
[glow=red,2,300]Authors Note[/glow]: I have not abandoned my
Ardeth fic at all, but after having rewatched The Betrayed, I
felt an enormous urge to write another piece all about Alek.
This one is an original idea, whereas my last Alek fic was based
off of the film. I apologise sincerely and hope you like this
one.

Oooh, where do I begin my dear? I can't wait for this to start
and your summary has me dancing around in my chair over here!
Please please don't worry! Oded is quite the muse and I can't
blame you for using Alek at all, he's quite the handsome/roguish
type and I can't wait to see where he takes you with this! I
love the banner and the play list is brilliant! (it's gone right
into my personal mix), and your summary's put my interest into
hyper drive. I love your pairing here and I can't wait to see
how these two mesh with each other. :) *waits impatiently for
first update* ;D

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, or so they say. If
I was to make something of myself in this industry, I would have
to stay on the lower level for a while longer. No matter how
badly I wished to get my writing out there, it simply wasn’t a
feasible goal right now. Plus, the hierarchy of our company
preferred to be on top at all times so if I so much as thought
about publishing my own work to find my true self, I would lose
my position in a heartbeat. It was a cruel world we lived in,
but in order to make ends meet, we had to do what we didn’t want
to do.
Unlike most days at the office, this one seemed fairly
different, or perhaps unmistakably different. There was a
neverending silence amidst the workers on every single floor and
I could not fathom why. It bothered no one, though. To everyone
around me, it was one of the most natural things in the world
and in all fairness, it did bring a huge amount of concentration
in a place that often lacked even a small hint of it. I was one
of the workers who sought this kind of relaxing environment to
get my work done properly and on time, so it was welcome more
than anything else and whatever had caused the sudden change in
atmosphere, I hoped it would remain for quite a while. I had
stacks and stacks of paperwork that had to be completed by the
end of the week and for the life of me, I couldn’t find even the
smallest burst of energy or motivation to get even a little bit
done and handed in.
Day after day, week after week and month after month, it was
always the same. It was almost like a routine in a way and we
were all robots, despite those who would often attest. And in
all the time I had worked for this company, I had not made a
single friend within the building. A part of me felt alone and
unwanted, but there was another part that felt pleased and
comfortable that no one was hanging over me like a shadow. It
gave me the freedom to get things done and to actually do them
as I saw fit as opposed to brushing ideas by my colleagues for
approval.
It was approaching the end of the day anyway and I didn’t much
feel like making myself known until the majority of staff had
already left. So, I did what I always had in the three years I’d
been working here. I hid inside my cubicle typing away at all
the notes I might need for the upcoming season. And what would
be sure to make anyones blood boil, we all understood that we
were to work over Christmas. Our holidays did not come until
that day had come and gone, which was cruel, but that was how we
believed the world worked. Most of us hadn’t had the luxury of
receiving job offers prior to working here, so we didn’t know
any better, which kept the whole ordeal hush hush. Some though,
like myself, had learned a few things from those outside of our
small circle of friends and were not too pleased with the way
the company used us. What was more, the hierarchy were given
time off to spend with their families during the season of
perpetual hope after barely giving up a second glance.
Apparently, we weren’t worth enough and we weren’t paid enough
to achieve that kind of treatment. Regardless of the number of
hours we put in every single day, it amounted to nothing at all.
And not one of us had complained, though we were finding it
increasingly difficult to get by on the small allowance we were
given at the end of every other week. Though today was pay day,
I didn’t even raise my head from the zone I had gotten myself
into through typing when the envelope was handed to me. In a
spurt of rage, my boss all but threw the sealed cheque down on
my keyboard and growled before turning on her heel and passing
out the salary of those around me.
I sighed and stretched, then released a barely audible yawn as I
reached for the envelope and quickly tore it open. It was always
a tiny amount and it was supposed to get us through another two
weeks, but only a handful of us made it that far without asking
for help. As I only had to cook, clean and pay bills for one, it
was easier for me to get by. Others though, they were not so
lucky. Some had small families and some had pets and they were
both expensive. I felt for those who had families to feed and
were given such a small pay to provide for them.
So naturally, I was stunned to find the number written upon the
cheque had risen incredibly. Ah, but that wasn’t even a good
enough word to describe how much it had shot up. My insides were
burning with all the joy that my face now displayed and with a
gigantic squeak and small burst of tears, I quickly finished the
bit of paperwork I had started, shut down the computer, packed
away all my belongings along with todays lunch and bailed out of
the office. With this amount, I could easily quit my job and
start up my very own business, which was more than pleasing. My
brain felt as though it had spun off into another dimension with
the absolute absurdity of the situation and yet I couldn’t
control my emotions. Over and over again, as I pegged it down
the street and hailed a cab, I read over the number just to be
sure it was real and I was not simply lost in a fantasy world.
And it was real, though I also pinched myself numerous times to
make sure I was actually here. It even took the cab driver a
good few minutes to let me know I had arrived and without
thinking, I yanked out my purse and tossed every bit of change
and all the notes I could find at him. The look on his face was
quite a sight to see and I knew he believed me to be crazy, but
he didn’t object.
Once I made it into my apartment, all was silent and I could
think of nothing to say, despite it being only me there. I
flicked on all the lights and flomped down onto the sofa with
the cheque in both hands, just gawking at it as though it was a
heavenly being. And to me, in a way, that’s exactly what it was.
I hadn’t earned this much in my life and it was then I began to
wonder where such generosity had come from. Surely, it wouldn’t
have come from my boss, nor my colleagues, so it remained a
mystery to me. I made a note to call up the office in the
morning to let them know I would not be returning to my job, but
a thought crossed my mind and I knew I couldn’t do that. First
of all, I just had to ask what had possessed the company to hand
out such a huge sum of money and wondered whether every other
employee had received the same gift. Being that I had no form of
contact for those I worked with, it was impossible for me to
find out without actually calling the head office and asking
outright, though I dreaded doing so. After all, a mistake could
have been made and in a flash, I could lose the money as quickly
as I had been given it.
The longer I sat dazed on the sofa with the cheque gasping for
breath between my fingers, the more I realised it probably had
been a huge mistake and I should return it to its rightful
owner. But parting with it wasn’t on my list of to-do’s and so I
debated a while longer on the matter. I kept nodding off here
and there, but the number on the paper did not go out of focus
once. It was now embedded into my mind and even when I closed my
eyes, it was glowing behind my eyelids. Who could possibly be so
generous as to give away four million dollars to someone who was
merely an office admin? I just couldn’t work it out and the more
I replayed that notion, the more I understood it did not belong
to me and though I was so very against it, I made up my mind to
give it back.
Bright and breezy in the morning, I would make that horrible
trip back to the office I loathed and hand over the money I
somehow thought I deserved. This was quite a rude and ignorant
way of thinking and I knew it, seeing as there were people in
that office who needed it more than me, but I couldn’t help
feeling a little selfish. After struggling and hanging on by a
thread for the last three years of my life, seeing as how I
dropped out of college, I figured taking what I had been given
whether it was an accident or not, was an okay thing to do.
With a heavy sigh and an enormous pout adorning my otherwise
serene features, I trudged into my bedroom to rid myself of the
uncomfortable work clothes I had worn that day. It was a very
simple outfit, but the heels I often chose to wear for work
always left my feet feeling half dead at the end of the day. And
no amount of hours spent in a bubble bath would ease that pain
or make it go away. So of course, a hollow moan passed through
my lips as I traded them in for my snuggly slipper booties
instead. Shortly after, my black top and skirt that somehow
resembled what one might wear to a funeral, had been flung atop
my bed without much effort toward folding or hanging them, and
my heels were god knows where at this point. In a huff, I had
pulled them off my aching feet and tossed them about without
even looking up to aim them in a specific direction. Oh, what a
day this had been. And though I originally had something to show
for it, the promise I’d made to myself to hand it back was
weighing me down.
Another sigh escaped my mouth as I pulled on my night clothes
and trudged back into the living room, my favourite teddybear
wrapped in my arms. After flicking off all the lights and
switching the television on, I spent a good while digging
through my horror collection and after what felt like hours, I
decided on three. Each were horrifying in their own way but it
was a task for me to choose which I was going to put in first.
Being alone and in the dark, then choosing to scare the hell out
of myself with a good horror flick wasn’t the best of ideas, but
funnily enough I wasn’t tired enough to fall asleep just yet.
Perhaps a good scare would get that mood on the move.
With absolutely no ability to choose, I wound up slipping
Insidious into the player and fell back against the sofa,
mingling with the cushions and cuddling my teddy close should
anything jump out at me during the film. As the opening credits
rolled across the screen and a horrifying image flickered upon
it for a moment or two, before switching to another, my fear
rose a couple of degrees. The film had barely begun and already
I was scared out of my wits, which was not an uncommon
occurrence for me.
Alright, so perhaps this particular choice would have me up all
night wondering why I had been so crazy, but it didn’t matter
too much. I had to get my mind off of the awful task I had
coming my way tomorrow. No matter how many times I reminded
myself it was the right thing to do, I just didn’t want to do
it. Surely, no one would miss such an amount if it had been
passed along so willingly and without much thought. But then I
realised over and over again that it could have been a mistake
and perhaps the money had been meant for someone else within the
company, which made my blood boil. Unless of course, it had been
meant for one of the few workers who had a family.
There was a rather loud bang somewhere behind me as the opening
credits came to a halt and I was up off the sofa with my teddy
in front of me as though it would be some kind of protection
against evil. The film continued to play as I now stood with my
back to it, but that was the least of my worries right now.
Whatever had caused such a loud noise was obviously very clumsy,
as there is was again, even louder this time. Gulping back all
fear that was no doubt present on my face, despite the darkness
surrounding me, I took small steps toward the balcony window.
The curtains had been drawn as soon as I had set foot into my
apartment, which darkened the room even further. And there, I
saw something shift behind them and a pair of boots beneath the
tail of the curtain. My fear rose several degrees again, only
this time, I really did have a reason to be afraid. There was
someone in my apartment and god only knows how long they have
been here. Having not heard anything out of the ordinary when I
got home, I figured they had been here a while already, prior to
my arrival, which made me want to complain to the landlord
immediately.
“I.. I know you’re there.. what do you want?” I asked, stumbling
over my words as only a toddler could do.
Almost straight away, I scolded myself for appearing so
frightened when it wasn’t going to give me any kind of
advantage. Besides, there wasn’t anything pricey in this
apartment that any kind of robber would wish to take. Unless…
unless they knew about the money. But even that seemed a bit out
there, given the time of night and how risky it could prove for
them to be wandering around this neighbourhood without so much
an an alibi.
Movement, there was a great deal of that now and before I could
ask any other questions, the intruder appeared from behind the
curtain and took small, slow steps toward me. Instinctively, I
backed up until I could go no further and toppled over the back
of the sofa until my legs were up in the air. I was more than
happy to have been wearing my pajama shorts, let me tell you.
But that didn’t make the situation any less terrifying. As I
scrambled to sit upright on the sofa, the intruder appeared in
front of me and I quickly stood.
“You have something of mine and I’d like it back, Miss..” he
said, his voice unlike anything I had heard before. There was
clearly a heavy accent in there and I wondered why he was so far
from home.
“Evers.. Cody Evers” I mumbled, trying to somehow put all the
missing pieces together in my head, not realising I had just
given him my real name when I should have been more careful. But
it didn’t matter now, did it? He was already in my home and
probably knew a great deal more about me anyway, everything but
my name, which was odd.
As I turned my gaze toward him once more, I noticed a very
dinstinct look of puzzlement and surprise etched onto his
features, as though I had just introduced myself as some kind of
queen. I wanted to ask him endless amounts of questions, but I
didn’t wish to irritate the man who could very easily overpower
me if needs must. “What are you doing in my home? I couldn’t
possibly have anything you want. I’m even surprised you managed
to get in here without being caught, do you have any idea how
many people live in this apartment building? I don’t know how
you think you’re going to get out of here without being called
in, or at the very least, being spotted by someone.” My rant had
somehow managed to amuse him tremendously, but he showed
absolutely no sign of backing off. And as he began to lay down
the law, his law, I realised I was in for a hell of a ride. He
hovered over me, gripping my chin between his thumb and finger
so I had no choice but to look at him as he spoke. His voice
shoved my concentration, though.
“Are you even listening to me, Cody” he barked, but there was
some kind of sadness in his eyes as he spoke my name and I
couldn’t figure out what it was. Nor could I determine his true
emotions given the ski mask he wore over his face. I battled
with myself for some time in order to remain upright and fully
focused on all he was telling me and then, it struck me, he was
after the money.
“You can’t have it. It doesn’t belong to me.. I’m sure there was
some kind of mix up back at the office. I can’t give it to you,
it is not mine and it is not yours,” I said, biting back a
string of curses I was ready to toss at him.
“Oh, I can have it and I will have it. You are going to make a
withdrawal and you’ll meet me here, outside this building at ten
sharp tomorrow morning, or you will regret it,” he said, his
eyes burning holes in my skin as he stared at me with all the
fury of a wounded and immobile soldier. Something had gone wrong
in his life, something he obviously could not mend and in his
efforts to make it all better, he had fallen lower than low.
Through his eyes, I could see that much, but I daren’t say
anything in case he chose to just kill me after our agreement.
An agreement, I realised, I hadn’t actually agreed to yet and I
didn’t much want to either.
“No” I said, my lower lip trembling, but my heart thumping with
the adrenaline rushing around my body. My, I was brave to be
standing up to a thief in such a way, but I had to do what was
right.
“No..?” he asked, almost stunned that I had refused his
propostion. As he probably saw it, he was letting me live if
only I would hand over the money and perhaps he saw this as me
being very ungrateful. “You will do as I tell you,” he added,
his hand now moving until his fingers were around my neck and he
tightened his hold just a little to get his point across. Tight
enough to warn me of the danger I was in, but not tight enough
to cause any damage. “You will, won’t you?” he prodded, a hint
of amusement dancing in his coal eyes.
I found myself unable to utter an agreement as I frantically
bobbed my head up and down, my own hands wrapped around his
wrist as if to pull his hand away from my neck.
“Good girl,” he said, releasing his hold on me before pushing me
back onto the sofa with such a speed, my vision was corrupted by
wavy spots as I closed my eyes and regained control of my
senses. But as I glanced around in fear moments later, he was
gone. It was almost as though he hadn’t been here at all and
whilst I wanted to believe that to be true, the dull ache
floating around my neck was all the proof I needed, that he had
been.
