I honestly shouldn't have watched Last Light the other day, it
totally wrecked me and this is what the muse came up with. I
wanted a much happier ending for poor Denver Bayliss, although
I've got to warn you if you do watch the film he's obviously a
lot darker then he's being portrayed here. The names of our
female leads have been changed in this one because the muse
thought it was amusing, haha. *blushes* I couldn't help myself
when I spied a few of your Bronson posts. :D Suuurrrpise!

Summary:
Christine and Ruthanne Wardell have always been the "good"
girls, doing exactly what is expected of them, putting others
before themselves, and serving the lord. They thought nothing
of volunteering their free time down at the Franklin County
Correctional Facility taking the Good Book to two of Franklin
County's most notorious and hard nosed inmates each doing a two
year stint behind bars. Visits turn into weekly letters, drawing
the two couples closer and closer. Two new loves blossom and
lives change, for the better behind those cold stone walls but
what will the good Reverend Wardell have to say about it once
the lovers are reunited on the outside?

Your summary and banner have me doing cartwheels over here! and
the theme is quite beautiful. Of all the songs included in the
playlist, my two favourite have to be Sweet Afton and When You
Come Back Down. I've not heard of Nickel Creek before and want
to thank you for introducing me to them. I'll be listening to
those songs on repeat now, no doubt, aha. When I first spotted
Bronson in that banner, I panicked xD which is of course only
natural. He scares me quite a bit - but that's in a good way, if
that makes sense. He's like one of those men you admire from
afar and want to be with.. but don't actually consider getting
anywhere near, hehe. Judging by all you said via tumblr last
night - I've no doubt this will be a fantastic story once it
begins :3 and I hope your current muse isn't too hard on you ;)
The outfits too! cannot forget about those, they are all
beautiful, as are the names of the ladies :D

Aww thank you, you're so sweet! :D I'm glad to hear you're
enjoying those songs, they're two of my favorites as well. I'm
not sure if Nickel Creek is still around but they certainly were
a lovely band. You're most welcome for the introduction :) I
know exactly what you're talking about and it makes perfect
sense, I'm that way with Denver. It's like "You just stay over
there and I'll love you from over here." haha. I'm going to
apologize for this first bit, it seems a bit dry. I'm so glad
you liked the banner and the outfits as well as the names. My
muse seems to be quite happy at the moment so we'll see where he
leads me :D

June Franklin County Mississippi (Wardell Residence)
The summer heat wafted around the old clapboard farmhouse like a
fire breathing specter. The wind was nowhere to be found and sun
was beating down with a force. It was a typical Sunday in the
house, not yet nine in the morning and everyone rushing around
like chickens missing their heads. Dad was getting his sermon
ready and Chrissy and I were getting things ready for our Sunday
School class that took place before and after the morning and
afternoon sermons. Nothing seemed out of place until we were
getting ready to go out to the car and Dad tossed me the keys to
the church van and passed two new bibles to Chrissy. Something
was up and we each exchanged looks while Dad busied himself with
sorting out some of the boxes in the back before turning back to
us.
"You two are going on up to the correctional facility. They've
got two inmates up there that need saving and I told the warden
that you're the two to do it. Don't worry about your classes
I've got Mrs. Hawkins covering them. Now, you may want to go
back in change, they've got rules about ladies not showing their
collarbones or bare arms. Pants and buttons downs would be the
best bet. Don't forget the holy water to baptize them with.
It's in the glove compartment."
He gave us each a kiss on the cheek and ambled off in the well
kept Ford we used for daily commutes.
Chrissy turned to me, bewildered and her eyes wide.
"Ruthie, what just happened? Are we really going to
that...place? Why would he send us there?!"
I simply shrugged as we made our way back up the steps and
changed out of our church dresses.
I was just as confused as Chrissy was, did Dad have an agenda or
did he really want to save those two inmates? We surly didn't
know but we were about to find out, one way or another. Now,
the town of Franklin is a tiny town, there's maybe about 800
people give or take, so chances are these men were out of town
when they were put behind bars. We weren't even sure of their
names as we pulled up to the county jail and went through the
various stop and go check points before we were issued a parking
pass. Chrissy fidgeted in the passenger seat and played with her
crucifix a bit, something she'd always done since she was
little.
"Ruthie, I'm scared. What if we...what if something happens?"
I found a parking spot near the front gates and sighed as I took
the keys from the ignition.
"We're going to be just fine, Chrissy. Dad wouldn't have sent us
here if he thought we were going to be put in harms way. Now,
you've got the bibles?"
Chrissy drew in a shaky breath and held up both leather bound
books with a weak smile. I pulled her in for a hug and smiled.
"We're going to be fine, I promise."
We made our way through the first check in desk where we signed
the visitor's list and stated our business. The female guard
that was behind the desk just shook her head as she motioned for
us to come back to the next check point to be searched.
"They've gone and sent two babies in with those wolves. Good
luck ladies."
She'd said after she'd patted us both down and sent us through
the metal detectors.
Chrissy grabbed for my hand as we walked down the narrow hallway
to the visitor's room.
"Why don't we just make a run for it now and say they didn't
want to see us?"
She said hurriedly as she played with her cross again. I
stopped and looked at her for a moment.
"Christine Joy! We've been sent here on a mission and so help me
we're going to see this through. Has it ever occurred to you
that we might be the only people that they get to see?"
Chrissy's face fell as the thought finally dawned on her and she
was overcome with remorse.
"You're right, Ruthie...Well, we'll go in there and make this
the best church based visit those two have ever had."
I gave her a reassuring smile as we went in through the double
doors and signed the last visitor's log book before find the
tiny room otherwise deserted. This must have been where the
family visits were held because two rickety cribs were pushed
into either corner and battered plastic toys were scattered
about all of which were recently disinfected and smelling
strongly of Lysol. Two scuffed tables were on either side of
the room with two chairs facing on either side, one toward the
visitor's door and the other which led in from the cell block
area. Chrissy and I each took a seat and waited anxiously until
we each heard the steady clinking of chains and steady
footsteps. We watched the heavy medal door swing open and two
men, each in shackles and worn out jumpsuits make their
entrance. Each was unshackled and shown to their seat by their
respective guard. The visitor's door opened and the Warden, who
went by the name of McMannis came in and gave them each a snide
sneer.
"I don't see why these fine young women are wasting their time.
These two are a lost cause and they sure as hell can't be
saved."
Something about that statement didn't settle with me and I gave
the warden a look of reproach before opening my mouth.
"Excuse me sir but who are you to judge these men? The only true
judge of anyone, yourself included is God himself. We believe
these gentlemen can be saved, if you were truly a Christian you
would too."
McMannis gave me a look and then chuckled to himself.
"Alright, you believe what you like, girly. You've got an hour
and then you can set up another appointment to save these two
sad sacks."
The guards excused themselves but not before they informed us
that they would be on the other side of the door.
The inmate across from me was a lanky man with shaggy blond
hair, clear blue eyes, and a mustache that aged him ten years.
The inmate across from Chrissy seemed to be a hulk of a man,
strong shoulder and a thick neck. Somehow his appearance was a
little more unsettling, his head was shaved down and his
mustache gave him a menacing sneer. Although there was something
about their eyes that put us both at ease. They truly didn't
mean us harm.
Mine was the first to speak in a voice that somehow seemed soft
and clear.
"Well, look at this, Charlie. They've sent us two wholesome
young things."
He leaned closer to me and stared into my eyes before sniffing
me.
"Ivory soap and vanilla musk perfume. You're about as wholesome
as they can get."
I stared back at him and smiled.
"I'm glad I'm to your liking. I didn't catch your name?"
The inmate seemed unnerved by my calm demeanor and muttered his
name as Denver Bayliss.
"Mr. Bayliss. I'm Ruthanne Wardell and this is my sister
Christine. We've been sent here to help you and your friend..."
The brawny inmate murmured his name as he looked at Chrissy and
blushed.
"Charlie Bronson."
I continued.
"Mr. Bronson, thank you. Find God, I'm under the impression that
you two don't get many visitors. Perhaps we can act as your
visitors if you so wish?"
Denver sat back and looked at me for a moment and then let out a
laugh.
"Why would two goody goodies like you want to be bothered with
ingrates like us? We're below you."
I shook my head and slide the bible across to him.
"No, you're not. We aren't here to judge you, like I told
McMannis, the only one that can judge us is God. We want to help
you and we were raised to believe that everyone is our equal.
You're not bad people, you just made some bad choices."
Chrissy nodded as she handed Bronson his own bible with a shy
smile.
"Consider us your links to the outside world. Now, lets begin
shall we?"
The hour was easy and free flowing, we managed to tie in a few
biblical passages and pointers as to what to start off with and
small talk was made. We found that both of these men were in for
two year stints due to priors. They both hoped that this would
shorten their sentences and they admitted that they both went to
church as children, Charlie with his parents and Denver with his
foster parents. We told them about our father, and how he'd
managed to raise us after our mother had passed away when we
were only 7 and 6.
"I couldn't imagine raising kids alone."
Bronson remarked as he held his bible in his large work worn
hands before giving Chrissy a shy smile.
"Neither can I, but it sounds like your father did a real bang
up job at raising you two. If it's not too much to ask would you
mind coming back next week...please?"
Denver remarked as we were getting ready to leave and they were
getting shackled back together.
"Certainly, Mr. Bayliss."
I said as we collected our bags and said our goodbyes before
seeing ourselves out after Bayliss and Bronson were escorted out
by their respective gaurd. As we set up another appointment a
younger female guard smiled at us as she took down our names and
put them onto the contact list for Denver and Charlie.
"Looks like you two are going to make a change in those two. I
wish everyone came in here like you two, unbiased and calm. That
what some of these boys need."
Chrissy and I smiled as we signed our names onto the paperwork
and left for the evening.
"Well, that went better then I thought it would."
Chrissy said that evening as we washed the dinner dishes.
"Maybe they'll ask us to write them?"
She said as she twirled around the kitchen a smile on her face.
If I didn't know any better I could have sworn she'd fallen for
Bronson. Perhaps deep down I had taken a liking to Bayliss as
well.

I don't quite know where to begin with this review to be honest
:3 I am loving it so far and can't wait for an update. I can
relate to Chrissy, more than a little, in how she was so
frightened about going in there. I'd have been the same because
I'm just that much of a coward, aha. Ruthie reminds me a lot of
Ruth Jamison from Fried Green Tomatoes and I absolutely adore
that. I've not seen that movie in some time and this story, for
whatever reason, reminds me of it. It's probably just Ruthie's
character though :D and they both seem to mesh really well
together; just as sisters should. Both men appeared quite
intimidating at first.. I was a little worried for the girlies,
but they don't seem so bad. Once again, looking forward to the
next part! :3 ❤

Aww thank you so much my dear! I actually put a bit of myself
into Chrissy when they were going into the jail for the first
time, it can be a very very scary place for someone that's never
been acquainted with it. I had to do it as part of a class
project in high school and during the entire thing I was about
ready to run screaming from the place. I believe you're much
much more brave then you give yourself credit for my dear :) I
can promise you that Chrissy is much stronger then she gives
herself credit for it'll take a bit to come through but it'll
come out. Aww! I kind of fashioned Ruthie after Ruth Jamison a
bit and I'm glad you saw it! I adore that movie and I tried to
make Franklin something like the town that was in the movie. I
was a little nervous about how Ruthie and Chrissy would seem
together but I'm so happy that they mesh. As for the men, that
was a whole different story, I tried to make them both
intimidating in their own way but someone harmless, if that
makes sense? I'm working on an update as we speak so never fear
and thank you so so much for the awesome review! <3 <3

One Month Later July (Saturday)
Our visits to the correctional facility soon became something of
a highlight to Bronson and Bayliss as well as Chrissy and
myself. We intermingled our discussions with sharing of personal
views and various tidbits about one another and it seemed that
the hour we were together flew by and left us all a little upset
when it was time to leave. We'd vowed to write one another as
often as possible (every week due to the allotment of paper and
postage given to the inmate population), as well as setting up
available visiting hours on our way out.
Our days blurred in the blazing summer heat of Franklin county
and the nights weren't much better.
Dad was off three counties over giving a revival and Chrissy and
I were left to on our own, which to us meant giving the house a
good cleaning and stocking the freezer with next week's meals.
"Should we take one of these over to Mrs. Gilly? She's broken
her hip again. Dad's left a list of who to give the surplus to.
You know he's been doing more and more of these traveling
revival things then he's ever done."
Chrissy sighed as she surveyed our various casseroles,
meatloaves, and stews. Ours were marked with a day of the week
and the surplus with date it was made. There were twenty
different meals total and I nodded. There was no way we could
possibly eat all of this so we ended up jotting down the names
of a few residents that needed the extra help.
"I know, odd isn't it? Alright Chrissy, get the keys because
you're driving."
I said as I collected the various freezer containers and put
them in an peach basket while Chrissy looked at me wide eyed,
her long curly hair going every which way before she let out a
panicked yelp.
"Ruthie! You know how I feel about driving."
Chrissy always hated driver's ed when we were in school and
every time she's put behind the wheel two things have happened,
she's either ends up getting rear ended or she ends up coming
back home faster then she left. I've been trying for the last
two years to break her out of her shell about it and tell her
that there's absolutely nothing to fear but she won't have it. I
could tell by the look on her face that she was near a panic
attack so I set the basket down, gave her a hug and told her I'd
drive.
"Ok, ok, I've got it. Just help me with the next basket? Looks
like we've been left the Ford."
Chrissy rolled her eyes as she laughed at my obvious joy of
having the regular car.
"Doesn't take much to make you happy, does it Ruthie?"
I shook my head as we settled in and made our way down the old
dirt roads that made up the tiny town we called home. By the
last count we had eight dinners to deliver and we'd left the
house a little after one that afternoon. By the time we were
down to the last meal it was after four, most of the people we
dropped them off to were elderly and usually had no one to talk
to so we did our best to be their sympathetic ears.
"Alright, who's the last one, Chrissy?"
Chrissy fanned herself and fiddled with the AC controls before
looking at her list.
"Uh...Mrs. Finley down on Wallis Road, last house on the left."
I nodded as I turned right onto the main of Wallis road and
kept an eye out for Mrs. Finley's house. I found it, with it's
neatly trimmed lawn and various well kept flowers that lined the
foot path up to her front door. It wasn't until we were
actually up on the front porch and had knocked that we noticed a
pickup parked over on the side of the house. The door opened and
there before us stood Warden McMannis, dressed down in civilian
clothes and looking just as surprised to see us as we were to
see him.
"I..Uh...hello. We've come to drop off a dinner for Mrs.
Finley."
I stammered as McMannis looked at us, still with our aprons and
worn sundresses on. Both of us were struck dumb as we stood
there a little bewildered and both feeling ever so self
conscious about our choice of dress that day.
Something in McMannis's face changed as he looked at us as we
held out the stacked containers of food and a loaf of homemade
bread to him.
"You two really are this goodhearted aren't you? Come on in,
ladies. My mother'll be happy to know that you're here."
With a smile he accepted the various containers and bread.
Chrissy and I exchanged nervous looks before we were shown into
Mrs. Finley's house and asked to take a seat in her front room
and make ourselves comfortable while he put things away.
Mrs. Finley came out with a grin on her face as she hugged each
of us and then settled herself into her favorite easy chair
before calling to Warden McMannis.
"Arthur these are the girls I was telling you about. Aren't they
just the sweetest things you've ever met?"
Warden McMannis smiled and nodded as he came out of the kitchen
and sat down across from us on the ancient couch before he broke
the ice.
"Mother's the person that told me about the two of you and your
work in the community. It seems like you're helping those two
inmates quite a bit. There hasn't been an outburst from either
of them since you came to see them on Sundays. I hope you'll be
stopping by more often, they could use the visitors. Bayliss has
a sister out in Tupelo but she's got three kids to take care of
and rumor has it that her husband's a drunk and Bronson's
mother's in the hospital over in Henderson. Her doctor's think
it's cancer."
Chrissy and I bowed our heads for a moment, each saying a small
prayer for both Bronson and Bayliss.
"I thought about what you said Ruthanne and you're right. I
shouldn't have judged them so harshly. I hope you can tell them
how sorry I am."
I smiled in spite of my shock and Chrissy grinned right along
with me.
"Perhaps you can tell them yourself, sir?"
McMannis's mother looked at him with a resounding look of "Yes,
why don't you." that left him sinking in his seat a bit.
"Alright, but only if you two keep up your visits with those
two, I'm counting on you as much as they are."
Chrissy and I both nodded in agreement and were finally able to
say our goodbyes as McMannis showed us out. As he bid us
farewell he stopped as we were almost back out to the car.
"I want you two to know that I'm not that horrible to them, it's
just I have an image to uphold with the other inmates. If I let
that go I've let the rest of those animals, Bronson and Bayliss
excluded, have the power. I've got to keep my job. I'm sure you
two understand, but I can promise you both that they'll receive
an apology from me."
Chrissy and I both exchanged looks and smiled at the warden
before thanking him for the change of heart he'd had and making
a promise of coming in bright and early the next morning.
That night we found ourselves lounging out on the front porch
because of the heat that hadn't quite dissipated when we heard
the phone ringing.
"It's probably just Dad or something."
Chrissy said as she lounged on the old porch swing waving her
fan lazily as I got up and went in to answer the phone.
"Hello?"
An automated voice came on the line,
"Hello, this is The Franklin County Correctional Facility and a
Denver Bayliss would like to place a collect call through to
you. State Accept or Deny now, please."
A swarm of butterflies came up into my stomach as my heart
started to race a mile a minute.
"I accept."
I stammered as I shifted the phone to my other ear and took a
seat in the hallway where it was a little cooler. Chrissy popped
in and asked me who it was. The line crackled a few times before
hold music was heard.
"Denver, he must have gotten phone time or something."
Chrissy grinned as she sat down in the living room and fanned
herself and muttered a song from our childhood.
"Ruthie and Denny sittin' in a tree..."
I shushed her as Denver's voice came on over the line.
"Ruthanne, you there?"
My heart leaped a bit as I sat straight up and answered.
"Yes, yes I'm here. Are you alright?"
"I couldn't wait until tomorrow to hear your voice. I know that
must sound pathetic to you and I'm sorry. It's just I'm afraid
that one of these days you're going to find someone on the
outside that can give you more then I can. Did I just say that
out loud?"
I bit back a chuckle as I assured him that I was still there.
"That's the sweetest thing anyone's ever said to me, Denver. You
don't have to worry about anyone else though, I can wait as long
as it takes."
The phone was dropped with a clatter on Denver's end as he let
out a whoop and I found myself laughing.
"What'll the good Reverend have to say about this? I'm pretty
sure he wants nothing to do with his oldest daughter running off
with a reformed jail bird."
I rolled my eyes as I noticed Chrissy making kissing faces at
me. I ended up grabbing a throw pillow from the couch and
heaving it at her making her yelp and toss it back at me.
"Well, I'm over the age of 18 so my Father has no say over what
I do. I'm sure he'll be happy for me no matter what. I just have
a question for you, Denver."
It was Denver's turn to heave a sigh over the line.
"Fire away, I've got nothing to hide from you."
"Why haven't you called your sister?"
There was a silence and then another sigh.
"Lil's wrapped up in her own little world with a dead beat drunk
for a husband and a brood of kids. She doesn't have time for her
low life brother that serving a two year stint. You and
Christine are the only people that write to me let alone give me
the time of day. Hell, I won't even have a home when I get out
of here, Ruth. I'm nothing."
My heart broke for him, this man that was put away for his wrong
doings, he'd learned his lesson and was paying the ultimate
price for it. Maybe it was divine intervention that brought us
together.
"When we come in tomorrow give me her address and I'll see what
I can do for you. You're not a low life and you never will be.
You're someone and you're special and you're loved, you hear me?
More then you'll ever know. You'll have a home when you get out,
I can promise you that."
My heart skipped a beat as I realized what I'd just said and my
cheeks were engulfed in color. Had I just told Denver I loved
him? How would he take that? Oh God what did I just do? The line
buzzed signaling the end of our call I nearly jumped out of my
skin as I broke out into a cold sweat, my eyes wide.
"You're really something, Ruthanne. You know that? You open your
home and your heart to me, not many people would do that. Tell
Christine I said hello and that her lover boy, Charlie misses
her. He's been pining since she left. He told me to let her know
that she's all he thinks about. Hell, you're all I think about.
Damn that buzzing. I'll see you tomorrow. I..I.I love you too."
The line went dead as I sat there in silence and then pressed
the end call button on the cordless. Chrissy came over to me and
bent down beside me.
"Ruthie...are you alright?"
I looked at Chrissy with wide dazed eyes as she helped me up and
got me over to the couch.
"He told me he...ll..loved m..me."
I whimpered as tears sprang up into my eyes.
"A man that I've known only for a month, written every week,
never spent more then an hour with, have never kissed...told me
he loved me."
Chrissy looked at me with softened expression before wrapping an
arm around me and resting her head against mine.
"Why are you crying then Ruth?"
I wiped my eyes with the handkerchief Chrissy passed me then
sobbed in spite of myself before I looked at her.
"Because I love him too."
Chrissy gave me a smile before she looked at me like she had a
confession to make.
"Dad's going to flip when he finds out both of his daughters are
head over heels with the people they were meant to save."
I raised an eyebrow and then grinned as Chrissy ran off to get a
ribbon wrapped bundle of letters from Charlie.
"I've saved everyone of his letters so far. They've been up in
my hope chest...he's an artist, Ruthie. I've got to show you
some of his drawings."
I grinned as I sat back and was given an inside glimpse of
Chrissy and Charlie's budding relationship.
"Charlie misses you something awful you know. You're all he
thinks about."
Chrissy's eyes misted over as she held Charlie's letters close
to her and I passed her a tissue.
"Well, we've only got...six hundred and thirty more days to go
until they're out free. They've already served a clean one
hundred."
Chrissy cried a little harder as I patted her back and smoothed
out her hair.
"We've got major planning to do then, Ruthie and we've got to
start now. Somehow."
So our plotting and planning began that night. We were hatching
a grand scheme for a fresh start to our own lives away from the
congregation and away from our Father, who no doubt would have a
bit of a problem at first accepting that his little girls were
about to fly the coop for the men they loved, the men that he
had sent us to save.

I have to confess that I am crying along with both these lovely
ladies; that was a beautiful chapter and I can't wait for the
next. Those men can be really sweet and I'm also glad to see
that the Warden has changed his ways considerably. At first I
thought it was because his mother was around, but given the way
he responded to Chrissy and Ruthie.. it's quite clearly genuine.
I'm alread pegging them off as gorgeous couples and cannot wait
for Denver and Charlie to be released :D
