This is a Tom fic :] my first story that isn't about a
character! haha. I hope you'll enjoy this one. It's basically
gonna be about his love life and a woman who has been a friend
to him through every marriage and divorce. Also, my Lestat and
Ethan stories are on hold whilst I write this one and my Stacee
one. I do hope you can forgive my overactive imagination. I'm
seething with Tom right now over this >.<

Thank you for being so understanding yet again! I do feel really
bad about this because I have so many on the go at the moment,
so the other two will have to wait a bit, haha. I'm just about
to have breakfast now and get started on this before I go out
for a walk! shall post the first update within the next hour :D

(I just want to apologise for how short this is. I'm falling
asleep as I am writing so this is the first update until
tomorrow! I promise to add more after I've woken up.)
There is nothing bigger than the little things – David Aames
As the rotation of a key sounded through the house, the
knowledge of him finally being home struck me with caution. Had
he not offered me a separate key some years ago, it would have
felt wrong to be sitting in his house waiting for him, and yet I
could not shake the thought of feeling like an intruder. Hearing
him call out to no one in particular, questioning who or what
had invaded his property, I quickly left the spare room upstairs
and pegged it down to the main room. There, standing fearfully
in the middle of the room with a newspaper as a weapon in his
right hand, was the man who had saved my life. Over and over
again he had been there for me, through thick and thin, never
once leaving my side. Now, after years of his heart being torn
to pieces and stomped on without regret, it was my turn to be
here for him. His wife, Katie, had filed for divorce over six
months ago, and today it became official. They were no longer
bound by marriage. No longer held the promise of remaining true
and faithful to one another. It was heart wrenching to witness
his mood swings through it all. Deep down underneath all the
violent outbursts, outbursts I knew were far from anything he
would ever bring forth, there was a broken man. All he wanted
was love, and that much was obvious from the very first day I
met him. In a stroke of luck, we met at a premiere some time
ago. Being the beautiful man that he is, he had invited me to be
his friend, which I wholeheartedly accepted.
Our first meeting will forever be engraved in my memory, as it
gives me something to look back on when I need to remember the
man I once adored and admired. These days, although I felt such
empathy for him, I understood he was not the same man. It was
ever present on his face, no matter how often he tried to smile
or joke around. In his eyes, his pain was clear as day. All he
wanted was for someone to love him for the man that he is.
Someone to strip search him of every quality he has and love him
regardless. If only he knew the truth. If only he looked beyond
       his constant agility.
He turned with lightning speed the moment my hand lay on his
shoulder. I jumped back in fear that he might take a swing at me
with the daily news, but his face softened when he looked at
mine. Although my shock had caused me to raise my hands up in
defence, a stupid grin was plastered on my face at what might
have happened if he had gone ahead and attacked me.
“Well, that was a lovely welcome” I said.
“Harper, what are you doing here?” he asked.
I sighed heavily and took a seat on the sofa just across the
room. He followed, only he sat on the arm of the sofa right
beside me. Laying my hand on his lap and giving it a light
squeeze, I told him exactly why I was in his house.
“Waiting for you, of course. Do you honestly think that I would
be leaving you all alone after today?” I said, in all
       seriousness.
He laughed heartily for a good few minutes, holding his sides
and almost falling from the sofa at what I had told him, and I
couldn’t work out what was so amusing.
Before my mouth took another road trip, his laughter gradually
turned into silent tears. He turned his body away from me and I
watched in recognition the familiar vision of him realising he
couldn’t hold it together on his own. My heart broke into a
million pieces yet again, knowing I could do nothing to really
make him feel better when he was at his worst. I cringed when
his shoulders began to shake and his sobs grew louder and
louder, before he fell to his knees and cried into his hands.
       “Tom…” I whispered.
I jumped up from the sofa in a flash and ran to his side. I
managed to raise his head from the floor as he had managed to
form a position of prayer, and tried in vain to get him to look
at me. His refusal to do so made me angry, and yet I could not
show him how badly his immature ways affected me, at least not
right now. It could wait until another time.
“Thomas Cruise Mapother! You look at me right now” I said, my
       own eyes filling with tears.
As he slowly raised his head to look at me, my tears fell slowly
down my cheeks, and no matter how hard I tried, they would not
stop falling. Somehow, in that moment of weakness, I managed to
tell him what was on my mind.
“You listen to me and you listen hard. These women don’t deserve
you. You have done nothing but be there for them in their times
of need. You gave them beautiful families. You even did a fair
few things you never would have considered before, just to make
them happy. They are the ones who should be feeling so lost and
empty, Tom. Don’t you dare, even for one second, think that you
are not good enough. You are going to be happy, as happy as you
could ever be. You’re going to find someone who truly loves you,
for you. Not someone who wants to use you. Do you understand
       me?” I said.
My tears had stopped falling, and when I finally ended my rant
and focused again on his face, I noticed he had stopped crying
as well. His eyes were glistening, as mine were, and yet neither
one of us was shedding a waterfall.
“Thank you, Harper. You always did know what to say” he said,
       embracing me.
I gasped as he pulled me into his arms, remembering what it felt
like to be this close to him, knowing he was the one who
initiated it. The majority of the time, it was always me who
wanted to be near him, to hold him, but there was a select few
moments whereby he would attack me with a bear hug when I was
least expecting it, just to amuse himself.
Another thought crossed my mind as he held me tightly, almost
crushing me with his strength. I wondered in that moment, why he
held me for such a long while. These moments were never brief as
one would expect them to be between two friends. They lasted a
lifetime, if not more. Only now was I beginning to notice this,
and from now on, I would spend all my spare time trying to work
out why he did it. Perhaps, what seems a perfectly good
explanation to me, he does this to familiarise himself with the
feeling of being loved. Perhaps, he does this because it makes
him believe he is still married; still wanted, and complete.
“Tom, come on. I think you can let me go now” I said, trying to
pull his arms from around my waist.
“And if I don’t want to?” he murmured into my hair.
“I guess I might have to make you” I said, giggling.
“That could be fun” he said.
After his comment, he growled into my ear, sending a shiver
right down my spine. I felt goose bumps rising on my skin as his
arms clung even tighter to my frame. I gulped, trying to calm my
rapidly beating heart, knowing just how easy it would be for him
to feel it against his own chest. His mouth lingered close by my
ear, and it only sped my heartbeat up even more.
“Calm down, Harper” he whispered, teasingly.
That was it for me. I didn’t know what kind of game he was
playing, or whether or not he was in the right state to be
joking around like this. As much as I wanted his happiness to
come about, his incredibly powerful outburst only minutes ago
made me realise it had to stop now.
“Come on, Tom. I think you should get some rest, you’ve had a
       long day” I said.
Somehow, I managed to free his clingy arms from around me and
sat him back down on the arm of the sofa so I could talk to him
a little more. As soon as he had sat down, he fell right back,
heading toward the cushions. Noticing this, he reached out both
of his hands, gripped the sleeves of my jumper and pulled me
down with him. A lump caught in my throat as we both landed
rather painfully on the sofa cushions. Painful, because on
impact, my chin collided with his chest, almost dislocating my
jaw and knocking the wind right out of him.
“You idiot, that’s what happens!” I yelled, aggravated.
“Hey! You’re the one with the big chin” he said, grinning like
       the devil he was.
“Personally, I don’t find you very funny” I said, scrambling to
       get up off of him.
“Oh no you don’t” he said, wrapping his arms around my waist
       again.
I gave up after a few pathetic attempts to free myself,
realising there was no way in hell I could make him let go
whilst in such a position. Looking down at him, I noticed the
peaceful look on his face, complete with a small smile tugging
at the corners of his lips.
“If only you knew” I whispered, tracing my finger lightly over
       his cheek.
A low grumble sounded from his throat and his smile grew wider,
panicking me. I prayed to God he had not heard what I had said,
and as gently as possible with such speed, I removed his arms
from around me. It was difficult of course, as his hands knew
just what was going on, despite the fact that he was asleep. At
least, I thought he was asleep.
Standing over his sleeping form, I looked around the room for a
spare blanket. After covering him from head to toe and smoothing
out his tangled hair with my fingers, I leaned down and planted
a kiss on his forehead, then the tip of his nose. He stirred in
his sleep, making me think he would all of a sudden jump up and
surprise me, letting on that he had only been pretending to
sleep, and that he had heard and felt everything I had done up
until now. I breathed a sigh of relief when he simply curled up
a little under the blanket. As I stood over him for a few
moments, watching his blissful state of unawareness, I was given
a gift not many had the chance to witness. A very distraught yet
highly tenacious man was curled up like a small boy, wrapped in
a blanket with a hint of a smile on his lips.
“Goodnight, Tom” I whispered, leaving the main room and
       wandering back up the stairs.
After climbing into my bed in the spare room, I spent more than
two hours trying to fall asleep. The images of him sleeping so
peacefully would not leave my mind, and it was keeping me wide
awake. I decided something in that moment that would either have
dire consequences, or would be something very ordinary and
acceptable. I crept out of my room and into his, knowing he
would not be using his bed tonight. I grinned like the Cheshire
cat at what I was doing, but before I could work out any excuses
for the morning after, his scent adorning the pillows sung me a
lullaby, and I was out like a light.

My slumber was dreamless, for the first time in my life.
Usually, especially lately, I had countless nightmares about Tom
in his depressed state. Each time I sought to help him in my
dreams, he brushed me off and decided he could sort himself out.
“Rise and shine” a voice called out.
I heard a quiet knock on the door and jumped up from my laying
position, managing with surprising ease to untangle myself from
the endless blankets on the bed. A little too late, I realised
where I was and immediately regretted having slept in his room,
until I saw his smiling face. His hair was pointing in every
direction and a stupid grin was plastered on his face. As I
blinked a few times and rubbed at my still tired eyes, I
couldn’t help but wonder what had made him so happy.
“How are you so bright and breezy this morning?” I asked.
Tom did not respond, he simply spun in a small circle and tapped
his feet together as he jumped into the air, grinning at me like
a fool. My eyes rolled at his stupidity and I realised in that
moment that he had definitely lost his mind this time.
“Harper, my dear, it’s shopping day today” he said.
Before I had time to start screaming at him given the fact that
I hate shopping, he had quickly left the room to get himself
       ready.
I bounced from his room and into the spare room quicker than I
had ever moved in my life, almost bumping into him in the
process. We both almost toppled over the banister before he
caught me in his arms. One of his arms held my waist, whilst his
hand somehow managed to grab my chest in an attempt to keep us
both standing. I gasped when I felt his hand there, and yet it
took him all the time in the world to move it and apologise. I
blushed severely as he mumbled a few things and walked off quite
       quickly.
After straightening myself out and coughing despite the lack of
company, I continued on into my own room and hurriedly searched
through the small wardrobe for something decent to wear. I did
not have a huge selection here. It was more or less the amount
one would take with them to a hotel during a holiday. And yet, I
could not choose anything that I wanted to wear.
“You ready yet, Harper?” Tom called from outside my door.
“Just a minute” I yelled, tossing clothes from the wardrobe onto
       the bed and floor.
After half an hour of searching, I finally put together an
outfit that was suitable for a day of shopping. It was the most
comfortable I had ever worn and knew it might cheer Tom up, at
least a little bit. I searched around the back of the wardrobe a
little and dug out an old shoulder bag of mine. On it’s front,
in big bold print, were the words ‘Top Gun’. I beamed at the
sight and even though it did not go with anything I was wearing,
I slung it over my shoulder, filled it with my purse and a few
others belongings, including a camera, and walked out of the
room. As soon as I was in the hallway, I spotted Tom leaning
carelessly over the banister as though debating whether or not
he should jump. In a panic, I raced over to him and pulled him
right back until he was standing upright.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” I screamed.
He looked taken back by my yelling, and his grin dropped to a
pout. I sighed and breathed deeply for a few minutes to calm
myself so I didn’t shout at him again.
“Just don’t do that again, okay?” I asked, though it was more or
       less a rhetorical question.
I pushed by him and skipped on down the stairs, calling back to
him and telling him to hurry up before I changed my mind. As I
waited at the bottom of the stairs, he came bounding down a few
seconds later, donning his infamous black sunglasses. I laughed
quietly at his poor attempt to shield the fact that he was one
of the most sought after actors in the world.
“Do you really think that is going to work?” I asked, shaking my
       head.
He only grinned sheepishly at me and then took in the sight of
what I was wearing. His grin grew wider and as his sparkly white
teeth dazzled me with the suns bright light reflecting off of
them, he asked where and when I had bought the shirt.
“Oh, I’ve had this for quite a number of years now, Flanagan” I
       said, winking.
He laughed heartily and grabbed my hand, spinning me in a small
circle so he could admire the rest of my outfit. After he had
complimented the bag, we were off down the street toward the
nearest shopping mall. It took us about twenty minutes to reach
our destination, and it might have taken even longer had I not
listened to Tom when he hurried me along. I’d been so distracted
by all the beautiful houses in the neighbourhood, that I kept
stopping and pausing for a moment.
“But they are all so beautiful. I mean, yours is beautiful as
       well, but seriously..” I mumbled.
“Come on. If you keep on stopping we’ll never get there” he
said, pulling me along by my hand.
He made sure not to let go of my hand until we reached our first
store. It was a clothing store, and by the look on his face, it
was clear he did not wish to go in there. I grinned when he was
not looking, and yanked him into the store so he didn’t have
       time to refuse.
I spent a lot longer than he would have liked trying on
different kinds of clothes, including dresses that were much too
short for my liking. The look on his face however suggested he
didn’t mind them at all and had now shown an interest in clothes
shopping, all thanks to the skirt I had on that was slowly
riding up my thighs. I scoffed when he winked at me, but before
I could sneak back into the changing room to put on something
more suitable, he grabbed me around the waist and pulled me
against him. Being unable to speak, as my focus was solely on
his lips, I stood there with my hands on his chest as though I
was about to push him away. I was staring longingly as his lips
moved when he spoke, drawing me closer and closer, yet all the
while I knew it would be wrong of me to simply lean in and steal
a kiss from a man who had only been divorced for one day. Then I
realised, he had pulled me close to him; therefore he had
       initiated it.
“Tom, how about some lunch?” I said, pulling my eyes away from
       his tempting mouth.
“Yes, lets go eat” he said, leaning a little closer as he spoke.
His warm breath hit my lips and in a flash, I was captured
again. Only, my head was screaming out to me that it would make
me a horrible friend if I took advantage of his current state.
Finding a small amount of courage, I pushed against his chest
and quickly dived back into the changing room. I’d just about
managed to fasten my bra after donning my shorts when he pulled
the curtain back and stepped inside.
“Tom, what are you doing?! I’m trying to change here. Give me a
minute” I said, trying to cover myself.
“Why are you so shy around me? we’ve been friends for years,
Harper. I know everything about you, everything but what you’re
trying to hide” he said, taking a step closer.
“Please, let me change. I’ll be out in a minute” I said,
crossing my arms over my chest.
He continued to step closer, and I stepped back until I could go
not further. Only, he didn’t stop. He kept coming forward until
his chest was right up against mine, and he ever so slowly
removed my arms from what it was he wished to see. I was
thankful for having a bra on, that much was true.
“You’re so beautiful, Harper” he said, his eyes staring into
       mine.
I could not tear my gaze away from him, as hard as I tried. His
eyes told me so much, far much more than I ever believed he
could tell me with words. I saw his pain and anger all rolled
into one, but there was something more hidden inside them,
something I did not want to ask about. I’d been in love with him
all this time, and yet managed to keep my distance given the
number of things he has been through. I figured a long time ago
that confessing these feelings to him would prove fatal to our
friendship. If there was one thing in the world that I could not
live with, it would be to lose him. But, as he continued to
stare so openly at me, not a hint of regret or worry on his
face, my beliefs took a turn.
“Tom… can I kiss you?” I asked, dropping my head to look at the
       ground as I did so.
I heard a small chuckle escape his mouth, and when I dared to
raise my head up, he was smiling lovingly at me. One of his
hands came up to brush aside a strand of hair from my face, and
when he lay upon my cheek, I unconsciously leaned into it.
Closing my eyes over briefly, I wondered how on earth these
women could leave such a man so broken and torn. He deserved so
much more than what they had provided. They had played him for
nothing but money and attention, or simply out of infatuation.
I’d spent many days and nights with him, getting to know the
real Tom, and slowly but surely had fallen hard for him.
Once I felt brave enough to open my eyes, I gasped quietly when
I noticed his mouth was a mere inch away from my own. His hand
moved down to the back of my neck, and his arm snaked around my
waist, pulling me tight against his body. Before I could go back
on my request, our lips connected in a fiery kiss, that even I
didn’t realise I had in me. Come to think of it, I didn’t even
realise he had anything like that in him.
“Harper… I love you” he whispered, pulling away and looking at
       my face for a reaction.
My eyes fluttered open after a few seconds and I slowly smiled
up at him. My arms came up and wrapped themselves around his
neck as I leaned in for another kiss, planting them all over his
lips and whispering a response between each of them.
“I love you too” I said, hugging him tightly.
I felt that if I let him go too soon, I might lose him forever.
He only held me tighter when I buried my face in his shoulder,
smiling stupidly to myself. In all my life, I never would have
       thought I’d be so lucky.

       Thank you kindly! :D
I am definitely looking into a round two that will focus on
their married life sometime soon. I'm quite the romantic myself,
so you're not alone in that one and I really appreciate your
review! I'm going to work on my Ethan story now, as I have just
read a rather interesting Mission Impossible short fic that's
given me a few ideas. Honestly, it makes me envy these people,
who have the ability to write so well in such a small amount of
time, with such few words, haha. I'll share the link to the
story below, in case you're interested! :]

Oh you're most welcome! Ooh, heck yes! I'm never one to turn
down a story, although I'm with you on that one. How the heck do
they do it!? I've put the link in my bookmarks :D woohoo! I'll
be looking forward to your Ethan one as well! Although I must
say I look forward to all of your work my dear because it's
       awesome :D
