Ok, the plot bunnies were out in full force to get me on this
one and Michael Caffee's been whispering in my ear driving me
nutty. I've got this plotted out and should start posting
tomorrow. I'm sorry the banner and summary are on the meh side.

Nessa O'Conner's world was shattered four years ago when the
only person she truly ever loved was pulled from the Pawcatuck
River one dark December night. What will she do when he comes
back to town and finds that the he's not the man he once was?
What will he do when he finds not everything is as he left it?
       Will time heal all wounds?

I am so looking forward to this! and the banner is lovely by the
way, as is the summary. It sounds like a very interesting story
:D and the title, I'm in love with that. That's one of my
       favourite songs <3

I'm so glad you like the banner and summary. Ahh, It's my
favorite Pogues song ever and I dare say that it will be my
wedding song if I'm ever married, haha. (I know I've said it
before but oh well, haha.) I'm sorry this first bit seems a bit
bland, it's set in the past, but it's to set the tone. I'll be
posting the current time bit later on today or tomorrow, I hope
you don't mind. Enjoy my dear!
“There are no unmixed blessings in life.” - Irish Proverb

       November 2008 Providence RI
It was just another night like any other or so I'd thought.
The weather forecast was calling for one of the worst storms to
hit the eastern seaboard since 1901, snow, ice, the entire mix.
The power flickered on and off most of the day making all of us
on the Hill antsy. Micheal’s nieces were off from school and
left in our care while his brother and sister-in-law prepped
themselves for the up coming storm. I was barraged with a
million and one questions ranging from why my hair was so long
to why Mike and I weren't married. I looked up at the clock for
what seemed like the millionth time and said a silent prayer
that Michael would be home soon.
“Because I like it this way.”
I replied as I helped Noni, the youngest little Caffee find the
puzzle piece she needed to finish her unicorn puzzle.
Mary Rose the oldest looked at me from behind the stack of the
       latest teen magazines and grinned.
“So, why aren't you and Uncle Mike married yet, Aunt Ness?”
She inquired with the same cat like grin she shared with her
       Uncle.
I rolled my eyes as I motioned for Mary Rose to come sit by me
on the floor. I kept an eye on Noni as she went about assembling
her puzzle and proceeded to pick up a brush from the coffee
table and went about styling Mary Rose's hair into one long
plait down her back and tied it off with one of the many hair
ties that littered the worn wooden surface.
“Who says we're not married already, young lady? Hmm? I'll have
you know your Uncle and I have been together since before you
girls were even twinkles in your father's eyes.”
Mary Rose laughed at my attempt at humor and rolled her eyes
before looking at my right hand.
“Gran keeps asking when you and Uncle Mike are going to have a
       brood of your own.”
It was my turn to roll my eyes at the mere mention of the
matriarch of the Caffee family, also known as Rose Caffee. The
woman like the rest of the family was a force of nature and if
she thought highly of you then you were blessed by the Lord
himself. If not, you were up the creek without a paddle and a
prayer. I fidgeted a bit under the gaze of my two would be
nieces and then busied myself with picking up the living room
and trying to avoid their gaze.
Mary Rose looked at me with crossed arms as she lounged on the
       couch.
       “Well? When, Aunt Nessa?
“Well, you can tell your Gran that we fully intend on spoiling
you and Noni before we even think of having any of our own.”
Mary Rose and Noni looked at me for a second and then grinned.
“So, ya know if you wanna spoil us can we have s'mores before
       dinner?”
I raised an eyebrow and thought it over for a second, weighed
the pros and cons and nodded.
“Just don't tell your parents, alright? They'd have my head.”
After a quick dinner and a few cheesy B movies the girls were
picked up and I settled in for the night. After a quick shower,
which was cut quick by the power flickering off and leaving me
with nothing but cold water to do a quick rinse off in.
“Figures it would go when I'm all by my freaking self.”
I grumbled as I rummaged through the dresser by flashlight. I
was left alone, in the dark curled up under six very heavy
quilts and flannel sheets listening to the sound of the snow
falling outside. I must have drifted off because the next thing
I knew I heard Michael come thumping up the stairs and grumbling
to himself about the snow and ice right before Thanksgiving.
“Y'know, some of us are trying to sleep here, Caffee. Would it
       kill you to be quiet?”
A solid thud was heard along with a few clicks as Mike set his
gun down on the dresser along with the clip. He told me he
carried if for protection but I knew the day he came home and
told me to change the locks and not to answer the door for
anyone except family something had changed.
“There better not be one in the chamber, Mike. I still have
holes to patch from the last five times.”
I felt the bed shift as Mike sat down in his side and changed
       into his pajamas.
“Trust me, there's not, babe. How did you and the girls hold up
       today?”
I shifted myself up onto my elbows and looked at him in the dim
moonlight. I could tell something was bothering him by the way
but I knew if I pushed him I'd never get any answers. Mike
settled in bedside me and stroked my hair. I moved closer to him
and enjoyed the silence that had settled between us. Mike and I
had always been like this, happy to just be next to one another.
We could go hours not talking, almost like we were in tune with
one another. Rose called us Twin Souls.
“You ever think about the future, Ness?”
I chuckled because I thought he was joking.
“Of course I do, ya goof. Do you?”
Mike moved closer to me and kissed my forehead before taking my
hand and sighing that deep sigh that told me that he was
thinking of asking a very large question.
“Why don't we go down to City Hall tomorrow? We've been together
for damn near twelve years, Ness. We might as well sign the
       papers to make it official.”
My heart stopped as I sat up and looked at Mike with wide eyes
and a grin. I leaned over and pulled Mike into a kiss without a
       single word.
“Well, I'll take that as a yes then, babe. Just, uh don't tell
       Ma anything until Thanksgiving.”
I raised an eyebrow as I rested my head on his chest.
“You've got yourself a deal, my dear.”
       Thanksgiving '08 Caffee Residence
Rose was running around like a chicken with her head cut off
trying to get the potatoes mashed, the gravy made, and checking
the stuffing. I, on the other hand was attempting to keep what
little I had in my stomach down without trying to make a scene.
“Nessa, you alright? You look a little peeky if I do say so
myself. Let me get you a drink.”
My mind was reeling as I tried to think of an excuse as to why I
could possibly refuse a drink but in the Caffee house they'd be
on me like a hound on a fox. So I watched with bated breath as
Rose poured me a glass of Jameson with a steady hand and set it
down in front of me. She looked at me with a watchful eye and
seemed to smirk a bit as I hesitated to take a sip of the
menacing amber liquid I once enjoyed.
“There's only two reasons why a woman of Irish blood would
refuse a drink. She's got an ulcer from praying to saints too
often or she's got a child on the way. I know you pray but you
certainly don't pray like a nun, Nessa. How far along are you?”
My eyes which I thought couldn't possibly get any wider widened
even more and I felt myself turn a rather ashen shade of gray.
“A little over eight weeks. Just please, please please please
don't tell Mike, Rose. I wanted to surprise him on Christmas.”
True to her word Rose didn't say a peep to anyone else at dinner
that night and my little secret was going to have to wait until
Christmas to be known to the world. The festivities went on into
the wee hours of the morning like every great Caffee family
celebration. Mike, true to his self constrained nature didn't
indulge in so much a beer and found it off that I didn't have a
drink myself. As we walked home Mike threw an arm around me and
sighed as we looked up at the stars.
“Would you look at that? It's like a million shining diamonds,
       huh?”
I muttered as I leaned my face into Mike's coat inhaling his
scent of Brut, peppermint, and oddly enough strawberries. Mike
chuckled as he held me tighter and kissed the top of my head as
       we walked up Delaney street.
“Yeah, it seems like. Y'know, I know I don't say this often
enough but I love you, Ness. I really do, with all my heart.
This Thanksgiving really made me realize how lucky I am to have
       you, babe.”
Mike was truly a man of few words but he had enough heart for
ten men and when he said something like that I truly knew he
meant it. I grinned as I reached for my keys as we walked up the
       front steps to the house.
“I know you mean it and you always will, Mike. I love you too,
       more then you'll ever know.”
       December 2008
“Hey, Nessa I'll be right back, ok? I'm going over to Bannon's
to get some wine for Ma. I'll meet ya over at her place in
       twenty.”
I heard Mike call from the other side of the bedroom door as I
finished getting changed. I was having a hard time trying to
find a top that was loose enough not to give anything away just
yet so I ended up having to dig through Mike's side of the
closet and borrowing one of his sweaters that he rarely ever
wore. I looked at myself in the mirror for a second, the mossy
green of the sweater seemed to bring out the pink in my face
which had never been there before. My eyes seemed wider, more
vibrant. I smiled to myself for a second before I grabbed my
purse, coat and the bag of gifts that were sitting on the table
next to the front door and made my way down the street to Rose's
place where Tommy and Eileen's girls were playing out in the
front yard making a snowman. Tommy stood keeping a close watch
on them and gave me a wave and grin.
“Hey there, haven't seen you in a dog's age, Ness. How's
everything going down at the Social Service Center?”
I smiled as he offered to take my bags and grinned. Tommy was
always a sweet guy and always asked me how my work as a social
       services clerk was going.
“Eh, could be better but the economy stinks right about now.
More women having kids and going on assistance. How are things
in the house of Representatives going?”
Tommy laughed as we made our way into the house and into the
       kitchen.
“Could be better but like you said the economy isn't what it
used to be. How's my brother treating you?”
I grinned at the thought of Mike and checked the clock.
“Like a queen as always. Speaking of Mike he should be here any
       minute now.”
Four hours passed and we all grew restless and stared at the
clock that sat a top Rose's dining room shelf. In my heart of
hearts I knew something was wrong, very wrong. Tears brimmed in
my eyes as the minutes ticked by into another hour and then the
       sirens were heard.
       “Something's not right.”
Was all I could manage before we heard a knock on the door and
the state troopers informed us of the worse. Micheal’s car hit a
patch of black ice and skidded off the road into the Pawcatuck
River. He'd not been wearing a seat belt and had gone partially
through the wind shield making him virtually unrecognizable and
had to be identified by his driver's license. His effects were
being gathered and would be dropped off to us in the morning.
The happy news that meant to be spread on this Holy and joyous
holiday wasn't meant to be. There were so many things that were
left unsaid and something many things we'd set out to do that
were left undone that my bones ached. I was widowed and left
totally alone without the one person that mattered to me the
       most.

       Noooo!!!
I was just starting to really like Mike, and then he's killed :O
that was very cruel of you, haha. I have to say though, that
first part was by no means dull and I can't wait for the next
update. Rose seems quite an interesting character and she
reminds me a little of the grandmother in Finding Neverland. You
have written this very well so far! keep it up :D

Aww why thank you and I'm so sorry! I'm so happy you liked it
and that it isn't dull :) Rose is indeed a very interesting
character, she's quite the lady indeed. I'm so glad you thought
of the grandmother in Finding Neverland, the Rose in the actual
show is a very hard woman so I tried to soften her a bit haha. I
shall update as soon as I can (most likely today or tomorrow so
       never fear!)

Here's the next installment for you my dear. :) I feel that I
should note that Aisling's favorite book is titled "Time for
Bed" by Mem Fox and her name comes from a lovely song of the
same name written by Shane MacGowan and sung by Christy Moore.
I'll gladly post it over in the Music I'm Loving thread for your
       listening enjoyment. :)
       October (Four Years Later)
Four years had passed since Mike passed on and I'm not going to
lie, every day's been an up hill battle, it gets harder and
harder to move some days. Especially when the curious four year
old that has his eyes asks me a million and one questions about
him. Or, like today comes home from day care in tears and is
inconsolable because she doesn't have a Daddy like every other
child in her class. The only thing I could tell her and keep
telling her was that her Daddy was in a better place and loved
her with all of his heart. That seemed to ease her little mind
for a while until the teasing started up again. I had to give
Aisling, or Ash as we all called her credit, she never once let
those little monsters see her shed a single tear. She kept it in
until we were out in the car and on the way home. The apple
doesn't fall far from the tree with that trait, I was the same
way through Mike's funeral and memorial service. I didn't shed a
single solitary tear until I was behind closed doors, then it
was like someone opened a freaking faucet and ripped my heart
out at the same damn time. I took great solace in the fact that
I still had a shred of Mike with me but it wasn't the same as
having him with me. Even though I was surrounded by his family I
still felt utterly alone and when Aisling came into the world
four months early I truly was. I had come from the office,
taken a shower, and turned in for the night and before I could
even call anyone there she was. She spent the better part of
seven months in the hospital where Rose and I took shifts
staying with her until she was well enough to go home. She was
small for her age but that never stopped her from doing
anything, she was already ahead of her peers in all areas
although she did have some trouble keeping up with them at free
play where running was involved. We were working closely with
her pediatrician and doing twice daily breathing treatments with
a steroid to boost her lung capacity. On all fronts my daughter
was a very well adjusted child. My now very well adjusted child
was demanding to be read a bedtime story.
       “Mama...Mama...Mom...Mom...Mommy...Mommy...Ma...MA!”
I almost caught myself trying to contain a laugh at her
inflection on the final Ma that it resulted in a sound snort as
I walked up stairs armed with her choice of reading material. I
turned the corner down the hall into her room and found her
sitting up in her new “big girl bed” that was absurdly frilly
and pink clutching her most prized possession, Mike's own
childhood stuffed bear named Ruggles given to her by Rose
herself. Ruggles was now so worn that he looked like some sort
       of rag bear by now.
“Alright, Ash. Scootch over. Are you warm enough?”
Aisling moved over and curled herself up into a tiny ball and
looked at me with wide blue eyes and nodded as she grinned in
anticipation of her favorite book. I leaned over and tucked her
in before sitting down on the edged of the bed and opening the
       book.
“It's time to for bed, little mouse, little mouse, darkness is
       falling all over the house.”
By the time I got to the fifth page Ash was out like a light and
snoring very softly with Ruggles held to her like glue. I smiled
to myself as I reached over to her night stand and turned on her
night light and quietly got up, tucked her in, kissed her cheek.
As I left her room I closed the door softly behind me. I made my
nightly rounds around the house making sure the doors were
locked, the heat was set, the coffee maker was set to go. I
settled in in the kitchen at the table and got out the never
ending stack of bills from the basket where they were kept. I
was finally caught up on this month's phone, internet, and light
bills when I took one final glance at the bill from St. Ann's
General requiring the last payment of five hundred dollars for
Ash's stay in the NICU four years ago. I rubbed my eyes and I
finished making out the check. I saw the light of a car hit the
back porch window as a car pulled into the driveway. I assumed
that they'd made a U turn and gone down onto the Darcy Avenue
but I was scared out of my skin when I heard keys being jangled
and the door being unlocked. I made a wild grab for some of the
heaviest things I could find, which turned out to be some of
Ash's My Little Pony toys and hurled it at the looming figure in
the doorway. A barrage of pastel colored floral scented ponies
were hurled and yelps were heard.
“Get the hell out of my house you scumbag!”
I bellowed as I threw the final pony and a can of peaches, both
of which hit the huddled idiot in the doorway. I heard his nose
break with a crunch and I was oddly satisfied and feeling guilty
       all at the same time.
“HEY! Hey! What the hell?! Ness! Nessa! It's me!”
I had prepared to throw a second can at the person standing in
the doorway but stopped when I heard his voice.
       “Mike?”
A flame of red hot rage bubbled up in the depths of my soul and
I found myself hurling more canned goods and anything I could
get my hands on at Mike. Before I knew what was happening I was
going at me with bare fists and threatening to beat his scrawny
Irish arse from here til next Tuesday. Mike was finally able to
stop me before I did anymore damage to him and attempt to calm
       me down.
       “I'm back, babe.”
Those words reduced me to tears as my legs turned to jelly and
slumped down to the now cluttered kitchen floor and sobbed my
heart out. Four years had gone by and now here he was back in my
life just as quickly as he had vanished.
“You. Idiot! You stupid ****! You stupid ****ing idiot!”
I bawled as I pounded my fists into Mike's chest as he smoothed
my hair and let me cry.
“I know...I know. I'm sorry, Ness. But I had to leave, I had to
keep you safe. That was the only way. I'm back and I'm never
       leaving.”
For some ungodly reason his words stuck me as hilarious and I
started to laugh like some deranged person. There we sat amidst
a little of canned soup and fruit and My Little Pony figures.
“Never. Leaving. Jesus, Mike. If you only knew the half of it.”
A second later I was back to sobbing and then to laughing and
then gasping. I was finally able to get a good look at Mike's
face. A rather horrid looking black and purple bruise was
starting to form on Mike's face just below his eye and his nose
was swelling some awful. I was shocked that I could inflict that
       sort of pain on him.
“Let me get you some ice for that. C'mon, I've got to get you
       cleaned up.”
Mike followed me upstairs and I stopped for a second almost as
if Ash was an after thought.
       “We've got to be quiet.”
Mike thought I was still hysterical but decided to play along
anyway as we tip toed past Ash's bedroom door quiet as mice. As
I got Mike cleaned and patched up I sighed as I looked at him
trying to search his face for anything that seemed different and
couldn't find anything except a few more lines around his eyes.
“If I show you something you've got to promise me that you'll
keep your cool until we're back downstairs, ok?”
Mike looked at me confused as I led him by the hand down the
hallway and to the doorway of Ash's room. I turned and put my
finger to my lips and carefully opened the door to reveal a
still sleeping Ash to him. Micheal’s face clouded over with
shock, pride, sadness, and utter glee.
       “Is she...”
I knew where that question was going and I nodded as I closed
the door quietly again and lead him downstairs and into the
living room so we could talk.
“She's yours, she's four, her name is Aisling Grace Caffee and
she's going to flip when she sees you.”

I just loved that bit so much, I'm laughing like an insane
person here over that, haha. That was a wonderful update and I
am so pleased he is back! I really don't blame her for attacking
him again afterwards though. Even if he thought he was keeping
her out of harms way, pretending to be dead is just awful!
But oh my god!!! he has seen his little girl! :D I can't wait
till she wakes up and meets him xD

Oh those damn plot bunnies are at it again! A mental image of
Aisling's room has been going through my mind for some time so I
had to create something. I've included her upcoming outfit and a
few other things that's she's been bugging for, haha. An update
on this one is in the works so never fear! :D
