More Drama Than Shakespeare
DIR By: Maggie Flannery
Date: July 29, 2012, 11:40 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Ok, this one's been eating at me to start writing it so I've
taken a stab at it. I blame this all on the fact that I was
watching a show that focused on Navy SEAL training and
documented their training and graduation from the program, as
well as my love for Viggo Mortensen and his dashing yet slightly
evil/hardhearted Command Master Chief from G.I. Jane. I hope
you enjoy and if it moves too fast just let me know, haha. I'm
still working on my banners for this so don't worry. :)
Author's Note : *Disclaimer* - Please know that this is a work
of pure fiction. I'm but a humble writer and I don't make a cent
from these works, I just write them for my own and the enjoyment
of others. I do not mean in anyway to infringe upon the famous
individuals/characters that are mentioned within the work. I
only own the original characters unless otherwise stated. If you
would like to post my work please contact me and I will gladly
grant permission as long as my name is mentioned and the
disclaimer (above) is posted along with the piece. I don't bite,
I promise. :-)
Portsmouth Medical Center (Portsmouth, Virginia) Night Shift
"No, Mom, I'm fine really. It's not that bad being the only
nurse on shift tonight, nothing's happened yet. I'll be sure to
put these Navy guys in their place. Tell Dad I said hello and I
send my love. Alright, I'll call you on Monday. Love you too.
Bye."
I set down the receiver into the cradle checked the switchboard
with a sigh. Given the training exercises that were going on day
and night these days it was surprising that very few men were
brought in due to accidents out in the field. My job for the
most was breeze, until a gurney flew in steered effortlessly by
two medics from the local Amphibious base.
"We've got a BUD/s victim here, Hart. Looks like he'd be right
up your alley."
The medic, Gregory said with a small smile as he tried to hold
the writing victim still. I sighed as I plastered on smile and
walked over to the gurney to check vitals as well as a gushing
wound on his knee. A worried look flickered across the poor
man's face along with an excruciating groan of pain.
"Ahh, looks like you've got a nasty gash from a shelling
excerise. Can you wheel him into exam room one, please? Let me
just scrub up and I'll be right in to patch you up..."
I checked his chart and offered him a smile of comfort.
"Master Chief Urgayle."
I was scrubbed in a flash and freshly gloved as I made my way
into the exam room and found the Command Master Chief wincing as
he tried to look at his mangled knee.
"Y'know if you look at it it'll only cause more pain, Sir. Now,
just sit back and relax while I take a look here."
Urgayle looked at me with a wary eye and then at my name tag and
gave a wry laugh.
"You're a cheerful person aren't you, Nurse Hart? I'm sorry but
I can't believe that's your last name, M'am. Most of the nurses
they stick on third shift are down right mean."
I bit back a bit of a smile as I tended to the gash and dabbed
on a solution to clean the afflicted area.
"Well, I try, Sir. I actually volunteered for this, figured I'd
give the mean ones a night or two off. This might sting so I'm
going to have to apologise. As far as the last name that's what
it says on my birth certificate."
A quick mist of antibacterial spray and yelp later I was able to
suture the gash and apply a dressing to the wound.
"There we go, Sir. You're ready to go into your lovely room for
the night until you're deemed fit to return to your training.
Now, if you'll just sit up and let me give you a hand getting
into your hospital gown and then I'll show you over to your
room."
Urgayle looked at me and almost seemed to blush a crimson shade,
something I'm very sure the poor man didn't do much in his life.
There was an old saying that a Chief is still a Chief, even if
he's in his skivvies. I had to bite back a chuckle at that one.
"Trust me, Sir, in this line of work I've seen many a naked or
half clad person. If it makes you more comfortable I can turn
around and shield my eyes. Just let me know if you need help."
I turned my back to him to illustrate my point and listened for
any signs of a struggle instead I was met with a barrage of
questions.
"So, How long have you been in the nursing field?"
I smiled in spite of myself as I answered him.
"Eleven years, Sir."
"Husband? Children?"
"No sir, I was involved with a Marine a few years back but it
didn't work."
"Ever consider dating a Navy man?"
I raised an eyebrow as I turned and looked at the grinning
Master Chief before me. I put on a mock thoughtful face and
hemmed and hoyed for a second.
"I don't see why not. How about a coffee after you're
discharged, Sir?"
Urgayle gave me what would be presumed as a very rare grin and
nodded as I helped him down the hall to his room. I went over to
the supply closet and got out an IV pack along with a line and
preceded to hook it up.
"What the hell is that for, Hart? I thought I was clear to nod
off..."
Urgayle exclaimed as he watched me with wide eyes.
"Hospital policy, after a gash like that you'll need something
for the pain and the pills that I could give you have a half
life that could knock you off your feet even longer, Sir. I can
promise you that it's not to going to hurt. If I can do lines in
the NICU I'm sure I can handle the back of your hand."
"You were a NICU nurse? Why'd you leave it just to come here and
work with a bunch of servicemen?"
I checked the bag as I hooked it up and eyed the levels.
"Once upon a time I was young and dumb and moved clear across
the country for a man that I thought I loved. He didn't love me
back and there really wasn't any call for a NICU nurse so I
checked around the bases and well, here I am. Ok, slight tiny
pinch, Sir."
I inserted the line into the back of Urgayle's hand and dialed
him in on a slight drip.
"That wasn't so bad after all."
He remarked as he settled into his pillows and yawned.
"Told you I wasn't so bad at that. Now, is there anything I can
get you?"
I asked as I pulled the covers around him and tucked him in nice
and tight.
"No, I think I'm good...and I'll have you know it's been many a
year since I've been tucked in like this. Thank you, M'am."
His bright blue eyes were shades by heavy lids as he drifted off
and fell into a peaceful painless sleep.
"You're welcome, Sir."
I muttered as I quietly left his room and went back to my
station to keep vigil in case another patient showed up.

Ooh I love this story so far! I don't believe I have seen G.I.
Jane but you've sparked my interest, so I'll be having a look
around for it. I love Demi, so it may very well be one I'll
enjoy. I'm also a fan of Viggo, but moreso as his character in
Lord Of The Rings; he's quite a handsome man. I can't wait for
the next update! :]

Aww thank you! I'm so glad you're liking this! It's actually an
excellent movie and one of my go to Viggo movies besides Eastern
Promises, Hidalgo, and Apaloosa, haha. Demi's also one of my
favorite actresses and it's a very strong role for her to play
and I honestly can't see anyone else in it. I was quite the
Aragorn fan when the films came out as well. :) You might enjoy
some of Viggo's poetry, I think I've got some bookmarked if
you'd like some links. Photobucket's being a brat today so I'll
tinker with the banner later on. I'll be working on updating
this so never fear!

Hopefully this shows up the right way, I apologise for not
posting it sooner but photobucket was giving me all sorts of
problems yesterday and it was driving me bonkers. Sadly my
original picture of Virginia didn't pan out so I had to resue
one of my other photos. Please forgive me.

I haven't heard of those before but I'll be watching their
trailers very soon I think. I quite like his character in The
Road, not sure if you've seen that one or not. I seem to be
drawn to incredibly depressing but powerful movies, haha. Ooh
yes! it would be lovely if you could share those links so I can
have a gander. I had absolutely no idea he wrote poetry. No
worries over photobucket being a pain in the rear end, I know
that one all too well unfortunately. It seems it still doesn't
want to work for you, unless it's going to be in your next
update :D haha.

I'll gladly post those links you :) Darn photobucket! It seems
my banner really can't stand me at the moment, haha. Oh I loved
The Road! I actually read the book before I saw the movie and
both just moved me to tears, I must admist I was pretty much
wrecked for the week, haha. I just wanted to pop on and let you
know that I'll be flip flopping between my Nick Rhodes on and
this one, I hope you don't mind! My work load has calmed down a
smidge so I've got some extra time to write. Yay! By the way, I
also wanted to let you know that I'm reading your work and
you've gone and blown my doors off again! Fab! I will be posting
replies to them so don't worry my dear! I really should invest
in some gold stars to send your way :)

Thank you! I don't believe I've ever read the book but I'm
getting back into reading lately, and I loved the movie, so I
might just look around for that one and give it a read. I don't
mind at all that you'll be working on the two randomly :] that's
alright with me. It seems my inspiration has been zapped over
the last few day but I can't put my finger on why. I'm really
hoping to update one of my stories very soon haha. Aww thank
you! :D I'm happy you like my writing so much; I adore yours
just the same.

Hello hello there my friend, I finally got that link to some of
Viggo's poetry for you. There were a few others but for some
reason they've been taken down. I do apologise. I just wanted
you to know that I am indeed still working on my stories and the
Master Chief one is currently up for adding on. You'll get
something to read quite soon I promise now that I've got the
time to actually look over it with a fine tooth comb and revise
if needed.
How have you been?! I'm still reading and loving your writing by
the way! :D

Hey there! :D
I had a little browse and he is a grand poet. I'll have a look
around too and see if I can find some others of his. It's rare
that I come across such poetry by celebs, but thank you for
sharing that link with me. No worries, I can't wait to read an
update though! I hope you haven't been too busy or stressing
over anything. I've been better, but things are looking up a
little so all is well, for the moment haha. Thank you, I'm happy
to hear you're still reading and I hope my little phases aren't
tiring you out too much!!

Later That Morning
"Alright, Ginny, your time's up here."
I heard Marsha the head day shift nurse exclaim as she came
through double doors and brought me out of my sleep deprived
daze.
"Hey, you even made coffee for us! Bless your sweet soul my
dear, none of the others ever did that for us."
Marsha said as she poured herself a cup and took a seat next to
me and looked at me with a quizical look dancing about in her
merry blue eyes.
"You've met someone, haven't you?"
I raised an eyebrow and shook my head as I organized the latest
discharge papers into different folders and piles.
"I want his name, rank, eye color, height, age, name, service
number, and what ship he's on."
I rolled my eyes and sighed as I got up and poured myself a cup
of coffee.
"Urgayle, E-9, Blue, five foot eleven, thirty-five, not giving
that information out, He was stationed on the Enterprise before
he opted to go into CERT and BUD/s training. His room number is
342 on the left hand side if you're interested. We're slated to
go out for a coffee after he's discharged if you really want to
know, Marsha."
Marsha's jaw dropped as she sat up and set her coffee mug down
and looked me in the eye before making a stuttering sound.
"Ginny, babe. Can we talk? You do know that that guy's an
Enlisted man right?"
I rolled my eyes as I took a sip of my coffee and looked at
Marsha intently.
"So? He's a very sweet man, Marsha. Contrary to what you may
have heard from other people on the base."
"But those Enlisted are always bouncing around, Gin. You were
always saying you wanted kids and a stable life and now you've
got one. Is some Master Chief really worth throwing that all
away for? Remember what it was like for when you were a kid?
Always moving every two or four years. Not knowing where home
was."
I sighed as I finished my coffee and set down my mug with a
solid clunk and looked Marsha square in the eye.
"Marsha Fielding, for the last time I want to get this as clear
as possible. I'm not planning on settling down and raising a
family with the poor man, it's just a meeting for coffee. You
make it sound like we're going to be picking out china patterns
and go cake tasting. As far as how the enlisted guys live
I'm aware of it, how do you think I ended up here in the first
place? If anything does come from this it'll be later, much,
much later. Now, if you'll excuse me I have to check on the
Master Chief before I clock out. Have a good weekend, Marsha.
Tell Jimmy and the kids I said hello, will you?"
I grabbed my bag and jacket and made my way over to the clock
and punched out before venturing down the hallway and into
Urgayle's room. I found the Master Chief slightly dazed in his
bed and bleary eyed as the new day dawned.
"Well good morning, Sir. You're looking quite...well rested this
morning. How are you feeling?"
Urgayle's head popped up and he looked at me with fixed blue
eyes.
"Doing just fine, Ma'am. Just dandy with a side of chipper."
He groaned in pain as he tried to pull himself into a sitting
position and failed terribly. I set my bag down on the nearby
chair and went over to adjust the Chief's pillows.
"There, lean forward for a second and I'll help you with your
pillows here."
After a few seconds or wrestling we finally got the Chief
comfortable and situated.
"Thank you, I was wondering when that other nurse was going to
come in and help me. She breezed right by when she came in. I
knew she was on the clock because I heard her punch in."
I shook my head for a second and sighed.
"That's Marsha for you, she'll probably be around by eight or
so. She's a little...how can I put this since she's a
friend...scattered."
Urgayle grinned and let out a chuckle.
"I'll say, wait a second. Her last name wouldn't be Fielding
would it by any chance?"
"Yes, and her husband's name is James, why? Don't tell me you
know him."
Urgayle sighed and nodded before looking down at his knee.
"I served with him on the Enterprise a few years back. I left
and he's still there, the man isn't too bright is he?"
I couldn't help but laugh at the one because Jimmy Fielding was
a good man, not the brightest but the man had a hell of a heart
and he was a dedicated family man, and he and Marsha were made
for each other.
"I guess not but he and Marsha must be doing something right,
they've got five going on six little Fieldings."
Urgayle's eyes widened and he gave a visable shudder.
"Oh lord, how they manage that one? I guess someone's making
good use of his shore leave. I couldn't imagine having that many
kids and I suppose they're all like steps right?"
I had to admit I loved Urgayle's honesty and blunt way of
putting things, the man didn't beat around the bush. Something I
was always looking for in a man.
"Indeed they are, I guess they save quite a bit on school
clothes."
Urgayle groaned and rolled his eyes.
"That sounds so much like my sister it's not even funny. She's
got seven of her own and she's always going on about how they do
the whole hand me down thing. I've offered to take the kids
school shopping on the base but she won't have it. I guess I'm
just the old bachelor uncle that doesn't know a thing about
running a house or kids."
I chuckled at the thought of that one the poor man could lead
trainees through base exercises with ease, go days without
sleep, and even handle life on a ship but get him on dry land
surrounded by children and poor man would be inching nearer and
nearer to a nervous breakdown.
"Oh, I'm sure you'd be fine. After a while you get the hang of
it, Urgayle. Haven't you ever offered yourself up for baby
sitting?"
Urgayle gave a sound snort and looked me over with those searing
blue eyes of his and seemed to be searching my face.
"Do I look like the type that would babysit? Or even be good
around children?"
I bit back the urge to scream "YES! Mine! Ours!" and just simply
smiled before answering.
"Yes, you do actually. I mean it's not that much different then
your current job right? You check for injuries, you overee play
time, also known as tactile exercises, the mess is equal to meal
time, and lights out? That's bedtime buddy boy. You'd make a
very good sitter."
Urgayle floundered for a moment mulling it over and then he
looked at me with a sly smile.
"I'll put you down as a reference the next time Rita and the
kids are in town, Hart."
I could tell he was getting tired by the haggard look on his
face and I gave him a smile as I came over to tuck him in and
rearrange his pillows.
Marsha came in with a grin and Urgayle's second dose of pain
medication as I finished tucking him in.
Urgayle grinned and looked at me through pain and medicated
eyes.
"You smell nice, like home. Vanilla and brown sugar and warm
cotton..."
I found myself turning beet red as Marsha looked at me after
she'd injected the medication into Urgayle's line.
"I'll walk you out, Ginny."
As I drove home I found myself wondering if I could take that
compliment seriously and then wondering why I was so hung up on
it. I ended up thinking myself to sleep, something I never did
in my entire life. Given my work schedule and the time I kept I
usually ended up sleeping for two days straight and then working
one week one one week off unless the hospital was swamped. I was
rudely awakened on Sunday morning to a rather loud sound
knocking on my front door. I stumbled downstairs to answer the
door and almost went into shock when I saw the two BUD/s
officers standing on my front steps.
"Are you Virginia Hart, Ma'm?"
Came a curt statement that was probably meant to be a question
but due to this man's years dedicated to the Navy it came out
like an order.
I raised an eyebrow and stifled a yawn.
"Yes, Sir, I am."
The second officer attempted to hold back a grin as he examined
me and getting a sound smack from his buddy on the right.
"Oh..uh..Command Master Chief John James Urgayle requests your
prescence at the training base at 0800, Ma'm." He examined his
watch and continued. "That gives you thirty minutes to get
changed, we'll give you a lift."
My eyes widened and my face all but fell as I asked them in gave
them each a cup of coffee and ran upstairs to get changed.
Thanking my lucky stars that I had had the sense to take a
shower hours earlier all thanks to my sense of time being out of
whack.
After a short but terrifying ride I'd ever been subjected to we
were idling just outside the training facility which I was about
to be given a grand tour of courtesy of Lieutenants Henderson
and Green.
"And over here is the mess, take most of our meals here unless
we have an odd chance to go home and get something."
We turned down a well worn dirt road.
"To your left you'll see the bell....and to your right you'll
see the Master Chief patching a boo boo. This is where we leave
you, Miss Hart."
To say I was a tad bewildered would have been an understatement.
I stood there examining the Chief's medic skills until I found
myself shooing him away and taking over.
"Ahh, so here comes the pro, you're in good hands, Quinn. Trust
me."
I felt myself blush as I finished wrapping the bandage and found
Urgayle all but staring at me.
"Alright, group up! Room examinations are at 1000 hours. I
suggest you get a move on."
I found myself attempting not to laugh as Urgayle turned back to
me.
"Oh don't tell me the room check means I'd be good around kids
too?"
I chuckled and nodded as we traced back our steps up the beach
and to the awaiting jeep where we trailed the jogging trainees.
"We've got an hour, which means I've actually got time to
myself. So, how about that coffee?"
Urgayle looked at me with twinkling blue eyes and I ended up
turning to mush and agreeing.
