I'm so sorry for the hold up on this one but I was busy tweeking
things. I'm so glad you like Abby, I had quite a bit of trouble
getting her how I wanted her but it was all worth it, haha.
       June 1985
The tapping of my word processor, the ringing of the phone, or
the bellow of Mr. Hilliard from the small intercom on my desk
was all I heard five days a week from nine to five at the EMI
record headquarters in London. I was lucky enough to get a job a
secratary/gopher girl but I was absurdly homesick for my home
back in the states but circumstances prevailed that I was much
better off here. My parents would have hit the roof if they
found out my job title. I couldn't quite figure it out, I'd been
here for nearly three years and I was still having moments of
homesickness. My parents were still going through a rather
nasty divorce and I figured it was best for me to head out on my
own. I ended up packing what I could stuff into a few
suitcases, cashed in my various savings bonds and scrimped my
last few paychecks together and I high tailed it the nearest
airport that would take me the furthest away from all the pain
America held for me. I was raised in a very working class
neighborhood in Pittsburg. My parents met in the early 60's and
ended up together. They, married, thought they were happy, I
came along, and life was wonderful. I had a wonderful childhood,
life was quiet, we scraped by on my father's modest pay seeing
that he worked as work forman at the local steel mill. Until my
mother came across my Father's other bank account that had his
name next to a woman's she'd never heard of.
"Ms. Collins, could you please come into my office for a moment,
       please?"
I could tell by Mr. Hilliard's edgey tone he was quite tense
about something or another. He usually went through when one of
the bigger named bands came through. I sighed and slipped my
aching feet into my pumps and made my way into Mr. Hilliard's
office where he was all but pacing back and forth.
"Ms. Collins, please have a seat. I've got some pressing
business to attend to with you."
My heart was in my throat as I smoothed my skirt and sat down in
the plush leather chair trying my best to calm my rapidly
fraying nerves. Thoughts swirled around my head, had I forgotten
to give him a memo? Or forgotten to make his tea with three
sugars instead of two? I felt tears spring up into my eyes as I
bit my lower lip to keep them at bay.
"Ms. Collins...are you going to cry? Are you alright?"
My eyes widened as Mr. Hilliard looked at me with concern as he
       passed me a tissue.
"I thought...you were going to f..ff.fire me, Sir."
I blubbered as dabbed at my eyes trying not to smudge my makeup
       and remain proper.
Mr. Hilliard sat down at his desk and looked at me in mixture of
       shock and amusement.
"Oh heavens no, Ms. Collins! Why on earth would I do that to a
dedicated lady such as yourself? I was going to actually promote
you, if one could put that in such a way. One of our better
known bands are on a bit of a hiatus. It seems uh...that the
band's keyboardist has taken a bit of a shine to photography and
was wondering if he could hire you as his assistant. He's
willing to pay you triple what you make here and is willing to
foot the bill for your travel expenses."
My eyes seemed like they were going to pop out of their sockets
as I tried ever so hard to keep my jaw from hitting the floor.
Mr. Hilliard took a sip of water from the glass set before him
at his desk and looked me in the eye.
       "Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran."
My eyes bugged even further and I tried to contain myself. I had
met the illustrious Mr. Rhodes quite a few times and enjoyed his
sense of humor, his dazzling green eyes weren't too shabby
either. But I digress, back to the matter at hand.
"Please tell me you're joking, Sir. What does he possibly see in
       me?"
Mr. Hilliard sighed as he set down his water and looked at me in
the eye again, I was starting to think he saw a smudge or
       something on my face.
"He's informed me that he likes your organizational style
       and...your fashion sense."
I wasn't sure if I should blush or laugh. The man was worth mass
amounts of money and could have hired someone else entirely and
here he was trying to hire me because he liked the way I
alphabetized things and the way I paired my outfits. Before I
could even think of a way to decline the offer with grace my
       mouth answered for me.
"When does he want me to start, Sir?"
Mr. Hilliard seemed stunned for a moment and then smiled and
before checking his leather bound daily planner.
"Well, Next Monday if that's not any trouble."
I cut Mr. Hilliard with a thank you and an "Please let him now
I'll have my bags packed and at the ready, Sir." before I ran
out of the office and grabbed my things before setting off
toward home. I rummaged through my closet and just decided to
pack as much as my suitcases could hold, if the weather turned
on me I could always pick up something along the way. The
weekend passed without much of anything interesting happening,
well unless you consider a call from your mother exciting. I
ended up filling her in on all the details of my new "job" and
       she seemed quite surprised.
"Well dear, if you're happy then I'm happy for you. If you ever
travel state side ask him for a day off so you can visit your
       old mother."
Was all she really had to say but not before telling me she
loved me and cutting the conversation short due to the expense.
Monday (The day that never seemed to end...there were going to
       be a ton of those.)
Bright and early Monday morning my flat felt strange, well I
should say strange. It just looked like an empty shell of
itself. I busied myself awaiting the phone call from Nick. I
glanced at the ticking clock on the wall and sighed.
"Well then, I suppose I should clean out the fridge or
       something.."
I muttered to myself as I ventured into the tiny kitchen and
started to clean out the even smaller fridge. Six hours passed,
I'd cleaned every surface in my flat and even did a load of
linens so I'd come home to clean sheets. I had just flopped down
on the couch and gotten comfortable when I heard the phone ring.
Nick Rhodes was notoriously known for being two things, a night
owl and a perfectionist. I couldn't knock those qualities since
I myself was the same way.
I sighed as I heard the phone ring again, I ventured over to
       the side table and answered.
       "Hello?"
A crackling was heard as the familiar voice of my new employer
       came through.
"Hello, Ms. Collins! I just wanted to give you a ring and tell
you that I'll be meeting you at Heathrow by the main entrance.
I'm sorry I'm so late in calling you but I had to finish a few
things up at the studio with the band. I really do apologize."
I felt myself turning beet red at the sound of this man's voice.
"Oh..it's quite alright, Mr. Rhodes. I know how much of a
perfectionist you are, I'm the same way. Let me just grab my
bags and I'll meet you at the station then. I should be there in
about ten minutes. See you then."
Mr. Rhodes seemed quiet this evening as he murmured a quick
almost bashful ok and then told me to have a safe drive over.
The entire way to Heathrow my heart was in my throat and my
stomach was in knots. This was either the best thing that could
happen to me or it was going to be a learning experience. As the
taxi slowed down and dropped me off bags and all I took one look
at my new employer and felt a feeling that I hadn't felt in ages
it seemed. I, Abigail Collins, was smitten. Ok, perhaps
developing one hell of a crush on her new boss.
       'Get ahold of yourself, Abigail!'
I chastised myself as Nick came over and pulled me into a hug
and pecked me on the cheek. My knees buckled and my face flushed
as Nick braced me with a slight chuckle.
There was another thing the lovely Mr. Rhodes was noted for, his
fashion sense. The man could make a barrel look sexy. This
evening he'd chosen a rather lovely dove grey traveling suit
with pale pink neck tie. Not a stitch, hair, or swipe of makeup
seemed to be out of place on the man, and might I add he smelled
divine? Not to mention those eyes of his. Dare I sound mushy
here but they looked like two bright emeralds when the light hit
them just right. I felt myself turn an even deep shade of pink
and wanted to just find a hole in which to bury myself.
"I dare say you turn a lovely shade of pink, Miss Collins. Let
me help you with your bags."
Before I could even protest my bags were passed to the waiting
steward and we ventured into the airport through the first check
in point. Nick had opted for two first class seats on the red
eye knowing that we wouldn't be disturbed. We settled into a
comfortable silence for a moment before Nick asked the first
       question.
"So, how are things at EMI, Miss. Collins?"
I thought I'd gotten my blush under control but at the mere
mention of my name I felt it creep up again.
"Oh, just fine. By the way, please call me Abby. Miss Collins
       seems so formal."
Nick grinned that lovely grin of his that could make an imp
       blush.
"Only if you call me, Nick. It's a deal, my dear. I dare say
we're in for a bit of fun tonight. I've heard the weather
reports saying something about a bit of a storm when we get into
       France."
Fear gripped me for a second as I tried to put on a brave face.
"As long as we land when it blows through I should be fine. To
be perfectly honest, I'm not that fond of flying."
Nick looked at me with some concern.
"Then how on earth did a lovely american lady such as yourself
       end up over here?"
I tried to calm myself as we taxied down the runway.
"I flew, that was a first time for me. I honestly thought it was
going to be my last, but I was wrong. I'm sure I'll be fine."
"If it's any comfort to you, I'm not fond of flying either. I
usually have a few drinks before boarding."
Thirty minutes later and two very weak vodka tonics later we
werejust fine. Nick and I passed the time by debating who had
more of an impact on classic liturature.
"Well, if you're going to put Maugham up there, don't forget
       Fitzgerald."
Nick said as he smoothed a crease out of his trousers. I turned
to face him as the plane hit an air pocket.
"How could I forget Fitzgerald!?! He wrote my favorite novel of
       all time!"
Nick looked at me with a twinkle in his eye as we both said at
       the same time.
       "The Great Gatsby!"
The rest of the night in Paris was spent in a small ajoining
cafe talking over white wine about various topics that peeked
       out interest.
As we walked back to our repesctive rooms I found myself
seemingly on cloud nine. That smitten feeling was growing and I
       didn't quite care.
'Perhaps you're getting ahead of yourself, Abigail.'
I thought to myself as I brushed my teeth and changed for bed. I
pushed the thought from my head as I looked out the hotel window
and up into the deep blue midnight sky that was twinkling with
what seemed to be thousands of stars in the City of Light.
I thought of the lyrics to a song that had just hit the airwaves
back home and found it ever fitting to my newly forged
       semi-friendship with Nick.

Oh I'm so glad you're enjoying this, I thought perhaps I started
off a little too dry. That's one of those songs that just begs
to be replayed a few times, but that's just my opinion, haha.
I'm a Howard Jones fan anyway but I thought it was fitting. I'm
acutally going to try in some lyrics at the end of every chapter
just for a bit of something different, I hope you don't mind.
I'm writing away because my darn muse is head over heels about
darling Nick. I can only wonder where this story is going to

Certainly not :D it was a wonderful start. I like knowing about
the characters before a story really gets going so you've done a
wonderful job at getting all of that information across. I had a
listen to that song and honestly like it very much :D had a
little dance on the bed as I was listening, as ya do haha. I
don't mind at all that you wish to include lyrics at the end of
each chapter, that would be nice to read and sing along to as
well. I love it when a muse is persistant and won't let you do
anything at all until you've satisfied its needs, mine is back
and allowing me to do the same right now. You are welcome! I
can't wait for the next bit :D

Aww thank you, I was so worried that it was tad dry, haha. My
muse us quite a picky one at times so we'll see where this one
leads. I'm so glad you're enjoying it and the tie in music. I
figured it would spice things up a little and help set the mood.
I can say one thing our dear couple will be spending quite a bit
of time traveling together to far and distant locals. (Just
thought I'd include the video for the song that's mentioned :)
  HTML http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpA_5a0miWk
       )
       Three Weeks Later
It seems the days flew by as Nick and I spent our first three
weeks in Paris. We usually woke up at the same time and met up
outside our respective rooms or in the hotel cafe. Our nights
were filled with drinks at the local nightclubs or just
wandering around the lamp lit streets photograping night scenes.
After one particularly long day of a continous photo session I
awoke the next morning to the sounds of the hustle and bustle of
the streets below my hotel window. I ended up showering and
rummaging through my suitcases for something comfortable to wear
for today's trek around the city. I decided on a simple boat
neck striped shirt and a grey pencil skirt with a pair of flats.
I let out a groan as I looked at my frizzing hair and sighed as
I reached for my brush and curling iron. After thirty minutes of
fiddling and burning myself I looked halfway presentable and
topped off my look with a final spritz of hairspray and a
smattering of makeup. There was a knock at the door and I called
for my expectant visitor to come in.
Right on time, Nick's head popped into the bedroom and he looked
       at me with approval.
"I quite like this Parisian touch you've got, Abby. All you need
is a long cigarette and you'd be ready for a day at the cafe."
I felt myself blush for the first time that day, I had a feeling
I'd be doing alot of that during our adventures together.
"Why thank you, Nick. I dare say we're two peas in a pod today.
You're looking quite nice in linen and silk."
I said as I finished my eyeliner and glanced over at his white
silk shirt, black blazer, and dark linen pants.
It was his turn to turn a rather adorable shade of pink as he
examined his newly shined Fiesso's and then glanced back up at
me, peeking at me through a gently hairsprayed set of bangs.
We'd established an easy rapport with casual compliments and
musings toward one another. We seemed so in synch with one
another an outsider would have thought we'd known each other for
       years and years.
I grabbed my leather traveler's bag and double checked that I
everything we could possibly need for a day's worth of photo
       shooting and then some.
"Whatever do you have in there, Abby? I've been meaning to ask."
Nick enquired as we headed out to into the all but deserted
       hallway and into the elevator.
"Oh, extra film, band aids, batteries, my own camera, tissues.
One can never be too prepared."
Nick chuckled and looked at me with mirth filled eyes.
"And this is why I hired you, I would have never thought to pack
       a bag like that."
As we made the ever slow decent to the ground floor we settled
into a silence until the elevator stopped abruptly and the light
       started to flicker off.
"Oh dear, it seems we're in a bit of a predicament."
Nick muttered in his usual calm manner, I on the other hand was
on the verge of having a panic attack.
"Oh my god, we're stuck...we're actually stuck. How long have we
been here and this has to happen today?! How old is this
elevator anyway? There's no call box or anything...oh my god!"
I felt Nick turn toward me and grab my shoulders very gently.
"Abby...Abby...ABBY! We're going to be fine, I'm sure the staff
knows we're stuck seeing as we're in the the only elevator in
       the entire hotel."
I felt the tears that had welled up in my eyes almost disaper as
he said that, now I was just left feeling like a complete moron.
My long held fear of heights as well as severly enclosed spaces
was starting to play with my head a bit but I shook it off.
"I'm so sorry, I must look like a raving loon or something."
I murmured as I regained my composure and tried to make light of
       my mini meltdown.
"Oh don't worry about it, my dear. You should have seen me the
first time it happened to me, I was a wreck for a week.."
Just as my frazzled nerves started to calm down the elevator
       came sputtering back to life.
"There we go, right on track. Might I ask what caused such a
       reation from you?"
Nick asked as we finally stepped out into the brightly lit hotel
lobby and made our way into the bustling streets of Paris
fighting our way against a current of summer tourists.
"Well, I'm not a big fans of heights, but you already know that
and as far as enclosed spaces go I had an Aunt who used to baby
sit me when my parents went out occassionally on Friday nights.
She used to lock me in my bedroom and the walls always seemed to
close in on me when the light was out. Silly, I know but it
still gets me at times. When I first moved to London I was on my
way to a job interview and I ended up getting stuck in the
elevator for a good four hours all alone. By the time they got
things running again I was a nervous wreck for the better part
of two months. I don't know if you notice at all but I usually
       stick to taking the stairs."
Nick was busy snapping away pictures or so I'd thought until he
looked at me with a quizical look.
"So that must be how you keep yourself in such nice shape then.
Have you ever thought of modeling?"
I looked at him as if he'd gone crazy and then burst out
       laughing.
"You've got to be joking! I'm nowhere near the required height
to be a model! They want tall amazonian women that can walk in
heels. Not five foot shrimps like me. You're about to run out of
       film, Nick."
I reached into my bag and got out another roll of film and
passed it to him while we rounded a corner and made our way
along the less crowded streets. I felt a surge of some sort of
electric spark as our hands touched.
'Don't get jumpy, Abigail. It's probably just a static charge or
something.' I thought to myself as Nick refiled the film in his
       camera.
"Thank you for the compliment though, I've never been told that
I was modelesque in my life."
Nick grinned and started snapping away at a few street
performers and then panned over to me.
"Do me a favor, Abby...turn toward me a smidge...oh very
nice...ok, look away from a bit..there we go."
I felt myself turn beet red right down to my roots as Nick
snapped away like some mad man.
"Ahh, there's that lovely blush. I'll make model material of
       you, darling."
'He just called me darling! Since when did pet names start? Oh
dear lord he's about to smack into that pole if he turns toward
       you another inch.'
       "Nick...watch where you're going...Nick I'm serious...stop for a
       second..."
It was too late because I heard a solid metalic clang as Nick
collided lens first with a nearby street lamp.
"Damn it! My camera! My eye!"
I hurried over to poor startled Nick who at this point was
holding the remains of a shattered camera and his left eye in
       pain.
I directed him over to a nearby cafe and found a table so I
could sit him down while I examined his eye.
"Ok, just let me see your eye, Nick. I'm sure it's not that
       bad..."
As Nick let out a small whimper as he uncovered his eye I
couldn't help but feel a twinge of pain myself. I could see a
very small bruise starting to form but there were no other bumps
of scrapes there to worry about.
"Good news, you don't have any bleeding just a small bruise. A
little ice and some cover up and you're right as rain, sweets."
Nick looked taken aback at me calling him something other then
       his name and then smiled.
"What about the camera...oh my god...I've cracked the lens. I'll
have to send out for a replacement part.."
A waiter came over with two cut crystal glasses of ice water and
two menus just as Nick was about to delve into his own little
       panic attack.
"Well, we'll just get it replaced and in the mean time you can
use my camera. That gives us some time to enjoy the city then.
       It's a Minolta X 700, right?"
Nick looked at me wide eyed as he sipped his water.
"Mhm, I didn't know you were a fan of Minolta."
I grinned as I perused the menu.
"See, I'm just full of surprises, aren't I?"
Nick chuckled and nodded before wincing.
"Still tender...and yes, you are. Feeling up to stopping by the
       Eiffel Tower?"
I would have loved to but I thought of one thing as a group of
giggly girls came over holding posters of Nick and his
       bandmates.
"I'd love to but first I think you have some business to attend
       to."
Nick turned and gave a startled gasp to the line of fans that
had cropped up and went about dutifully signing autographs and
taking pictures, many of which I offered to play photographer
for. Four hours and many happy fans later we were left in peace
to have a lovely dinner together in an otherwise deserted cafe.
"I'm so sorry about that. I didn't expect them to keep coming
like that, I feel like we've just wasted an otherwise perfect
       day of sight seeing."
I waved it off as the check and complimentary coffee came.
"It's quite alright, Nick. You're their idol, you made their
day, possibly their year. Not many musicians would do that and I
think it's terribly sweet of you."
Nick blushed a crimson shade as we collected our things and made
our way out into the cool evening and walked down a narrow side
       street together.
"I don't know about you but after a day like that in that cafe I
could do with a whirl about the dance floor. What do you say we
go back to the hotel get changed and check out that little club
       just down from the hotel?"
I liked the sound of that and after sitting around for the
better part of the day I agreed.
"Alright, I'll meet you there then. Say nine?"
Nick nodded as we made our way back to the hotel and up to our
       rooms.
Two hours a second shower, and many outfit changes later I
finally decided on an asymetrical pale pink silk number with
matching pumps and made my way over to the club down from the
       hotel.
The club was a typical parisian night club. Wicker table and
chairs, dimply lit, soft music playing and many a hushed
conversation. I took a seat at the bar and scanned the crowd
while I waited for my drink. Just as my drink arrived Nick
popped up beside me at the bar his eyes wide and mouth slightly
agap. I took a sip of my drink and smiled.
"Evening attire is a ten in my book, darling. Pink brings out
your complexion. What are you drinking, dear?"
"Pink gin, would you like one?"
Nick made a face and then reached for my glass and took a sip.
"Ooh, that could be habit forming...like other pink things I'm
seeing this evening. Fancy a dance?"
I felt myself starting to flush as he took my hand and I set
down my drink as we made our way to the dance floor. A familair
Roxy Music tune filled the cafe as we swayed around the dance
       floor.
Now the party's over, I'm so tired
Then I see you coming out of nowhere
       Much communication in a motion
       Without conversation or a notion
       Avalon
"Ahh, one of my favorite Roxy Music songs..." I muttered as we
       swayed to the right.
Nick grinned as he pulled just a little closer and said
"I dare say we really are quite a bit alike."
We turned to the left and dance along to beat I felt like I was
       on cloud nine.
When the samba takes you out of nowhere
And the background's fading out of focus
My mind all but went fuzzy as Nick's lips came down on mine and
for one brief second the world along with my heart stopped. As
the kiss was broken my head started to spin a preposition was
made and we high tailed it around to the back of the club and
out through the back entrance and into the cool night air. I
felt myself being gently pinned against the worn cool bricks of
the club as my hands roamed through Nick's hair.
"Y'know, in some places, sleeping with the boss could lead to
       bad things..."
I muttered as Nick nibbled at my neck and let out a muffled
       chuckle.
"Trust me me some bad things can turn out very very good. Your
       room or mine, darling?"
Just as I was about to answer a flurry of flash bulbs went off
and calls of "Monsieur Rhodes!" were heard as we tried to out
run the small gaggle of paparazzi that were now following us.
One of my heels got stuck in the sidewalk grate.
"They're about to catch up to us, what do I do?! I'm stuck!"
Nick stopped turned around and picked me up out of my shoes and
proceded to carry me to the hotel.
       "Hey! What about my..."
Nick cut me off with an "I'll replace them!"
We hurried into the hotel lobby and Nick checked his pockets.
"I've forgotten my room key...do you have yours?"
I frantically searched my cultch and then shook my head.
"I must have dropped it or forgotten it in my room."
The front desk clerk tried to help us and kindly gave us another
key to Nick's room and we made our way up in the elevator.
"Well, that was an adventure wasn't it?"
Nick bemused as we just about made our way to the top floor only
to hear the exact same sound as this morning.
"We're stuck again...this must be a world record for this
       elevator or something.."
I muttered as the lights went out.
"Shall we pick up where we left off?"
Nick enquired as he snaked an arm around my wasit and all but
       purred into my ear.
The light flickered on and the last strangled "ding" was heard
       as we reached our floor.
       "I'm much prefer a bed if you don't mind..since we're so close
       to your room and all."
Nick grinned a toothy grin and lead the way between passionate
       kisses and gropes.
Just as we closed the door Nick rummaged through his bags, pants
       pockets, and wallet.
"No...no...no. This can't be happening...It was right there in
my wallet where it always is. I always have back ups...damn it!"
Nick turned back to me with desperate eyes.
       "I don't want you to think I sleep around because I don't. I'm
usually the most well stocked just in case but it seems my
       supply has...uh...depleated itself."
I was crestfallen as Nick and I sat at the foot of the bed both
trying not to cry or tear each other's clothes off.
       "I'm going to kill Simon.."
"No, I'm going to kill Simon. Alright, I'll flip you for him.
       Got a coin?"
Nick rummaged through his change and handed me a coin.
"Heads you get to do it tail I get to do it."
I tossed the coin up into the air and watched it land, spin, and
roll over to the heating vent and roll in with a thunk.
       "Oh come on!"
Was all Nick and I could say.

I love love love this update! Just like you, I have been drawn
into this story, as well as all your others that you have
previously written. I love these two together :] they are
awkwardly adorable in a way and I like that a lot. It makes the
story intriguing. I feel sorry for them toward the end there
though, how unfortunate was that! :O awaiting an update now!

Aww why thank you! You made me blush! I'm so glad you like these
two together and I do have to agree, they're just so awkwardly
adorable one can't help but like them. I think their little
predicament will make up for itself in further updates perhaps
the next one? My muse is cracking the whip on me so to speak and
I'm working on the next update! :D
