I would have posted about this one sooner, but it still confuses
me and I needed time to work it out. But, I still can't work it
out so I'm requesting help here :D I just do not understand the
purpose of this movie. Martin.. is he simply a figment of her
imagination or is he actually there? it's so strange. Even
though I do not get it, I love it. There are two scenes in
particular that I adore and repeat them over and over because I
get a rush through watching them.

I've got a love hate relationship with this movie as well, haha.
Don't worry! Now, this is just my take on the movie but here
goes. I think Martin's a hodge podge figment of her imagination.
I think what kick started it was her run in with the young hitch
hiker in the cafe in the start of the movie. Her son would have
been around that age and something about him maybe reminded her
of her former lover (or would he be considered a rapist? from
her past.) They did look quite a bit alike. I also happen to
think that Martin also serves as a symbol of the guilt she'll
always seem to carry because she'll never know what happened to
her baby, which would drive even the most sane person over the
edge. Her relationship with the weirdo doctor didn't help the
situation either, she was trapped in a loveless marriage,
perhaps unable to have anymore children, and feeling like she
let her life just drift away. A second thought could be that
Martin also serves as a reminder of her youth and the things she
clings to with an almost desperate need, her doll collection,
(serving as pseudo babies perhaps?), her pouting when her dear
husband isn't in the mood, acting out in the end of the movie
and then running away. Oh dear, I fear I'm rambling! Sorry!
Although I must say I do love to look at Martin, haha.

Ah, I feel like such a fool now haha. Ever since first seeing
that Hitch Hiker, I figured it was the same person throughout
the whole movie. It makes a little more sense to me now. Your
theory is a fantastic one as well. Many people try to work out
what it actually meant and what was happening, but you've hit
the nail on the head with what you think about it. I'm going to
agree with what you've said because it sounds like the only
possible explanation for such a strange story. It's quite a
poorly directed movie also, so I don't think that helps one bit.
I do love watching them together though. My favourite scene is
when she's telling him to wash his hands, he throws a fit and
then offers his hand to her and pulls her right up against him.
I get goosebumps everytime xD but now I sound like an absolute
perv haha.

I thought the very same thing when I first watched the movie and
was left with a horrible headache, haha. I agree, the directing
left a lot of gaps and perhaps what was left on the cutting room
floor after editing would have held more clues for us. Thank
you! I thought maybe it was a little out there, haha. Oooh I do
love that scene as well and a close second for me is when he's
playing the piano :D By the way, you most certainly are not a
perv my dear. Figments, even if they try to tell a poor mentally
unstable woman they're her son, haha.

It took me a while to convince myself that I just had to watch
it, but I'm glad I did. I've tried to view every movie Gary has
ever made and some are painful, but more or less worth it in the
end. It's definitely the best theory I've heard about that movie
and one I am more than willing to agree with :D it makes a lot
of sense. Ah, I love the piano scene as well :] it's just so
lovely! even if slightly odd haha.
