       Mandatory Vaccinations
       By: nitrox116 Date: February 6, 2015, 10:26 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
So, here's a pretty interesting topic that I think is ripe for
debate. Currently, vaccinations are widespread though not
mandatory throughout the U.S. They have been proven successful
in protecting against many diseases that once plagued society in
the past, and are incredibly important tools in the medical
       world.
However, some people choose not to use vaccines thanks to
various reasons (for example, some people believe that vaccines
cause autism or other developmental disorders, while others have
religious reasons). Not taking a vaccine puts you at risk for
disease, which can not only hurt you but also allows you to
infect others. People whose immune systems are too weak to take
vaccines could be put at risk if a healthy person refuses to
       take vaccines.
So, the question is: Should vaccines be made mandatory? I would
argue that they should be, although the punishment for not
taking one should not be harsh: perhaps only a relatively small
fine. This would greatly encourage the use of vaccines and help
protect people who cannot take them for medical reasons (who
would obviously be exempt from the law). Most of the objections
against vaccinations are erroneous and based on incorrect data,
and their benefits have been proven by history. Additionally,
there is precedent for the government mandating a medically
beneficial procedure: U.S. tap water is fluoridated to help
       prevent tooth decay.

A controversial subject is how much control the government
should have on our bodies. Some people do not want to be
vaccinated for various personal reasons, and requiring them to
do so by law can be compared to making abortion a crime, as they
are both a matter of the law deciding what you do with your
body. Regardless of the obvious medical benefits of vaccination,
I don't believe it's in the government's place to make utilizing
       them absolutely mandatory.

The problem with that is not vaccinating endangers others, not
just you. There are many people who have conditions that mean
that they can't be vaccinated. Small children also cannot get a
lot of vaccines until they are older. Therefore by not
vaccinating YOU are putting those people in danger. The proposed
solution to this problem is to bar unvaccinated children from
public schools, therefore they are not endangering other
       children.

I think it depends on what kind of disease it is. Measles, yes.
       Flu, no. Etcetera.

This is a really difficult subject, because we can't "live and
let live" like we do with similar problems--we need herd
immunity for vaccines to have a good long-term effect, which
       requires contribution from almost everyone.
Unfortunately, I think that making vaccines mandatory would just
inspire a stronger backlash. A better effort might be to give
people more information--make sure they know exactly what
they're taking and why it's important, rather than try to
       pressure anyone.

One of the problems with distributing information to people more
aggressively is that it doesn't always have the desired effect:
studies have shown that pamphlets giving positive information
and debunking negative information about vaccines actually
increases fear of vaccines among the elderly and makes them less
       likely to use them.

Well, I doubt that forcing them to take them will make them any
       less scared.
