About Debate
By: jamesgames Date: January 21, 2015, 9:55 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
((If anyone gets thoughts on deleting this, don't you dare. I
put effort into this.))
This topic describes debate. Even experienced debaters
should read this, it makes some pretty good points.
A 'debate' is "a formal discussion on a particular topic in
a public meeting or legislative assembly, in which opposing
arguments are put forward." To sum that answer up, a debate is a
formal discussion on a topic of the Instigator's (see Roles)
choosing where multiple people argue to determine who is most
likely correct.

First, we can start with all the roles in Debate.
Instigator: The person who starts the Debate
Contender: The person who joins a Debate
Pro: The person who agrees with the Claim. The Pro is supposed
to make convincing arguments on why (s)he believes this.
Con: The person who disagrees with the Claim. The Con is
supposed to make convincing arguments on why (s)he disbelieves
this.
Secondly, I shall describe essential "items" in a debate.
The Claim: The Claim is the most important thing in a debate.
Without it, it is impossible to debate. The Claim is what the
Pro and Con are debating.
e.g. "Time Travel is Real"
Rules: This is the second important thing in a debate. This
contains info on how your debate works and what you can and
can't do. If you want your debate to be more organized, you can
select a pattern to use in the rule section (See "Arguments and
Rebuttals"). You cannot use rules like "You are not allowed to
win", "You are instantly the loser", etc...
e.g. Rule 1; Don't use Yahoo or Wikipedia as sources. Rule 2; No
going off topic. Rule 3; ARAR Etc...
Arguments and Rebuttals: Arguments and Rebuttals are
automatically in a debate. Patterns tend to be "ARAR", "AARR",
"ARAARR", etc... An Argument always begins a debate. An Argument
is when the Instigator writes a few convincing paragraphs to
start off. A Rebuttal is where the Contender tries to prove the
Argument wrong. Then, the Instigator can either try to prove the
Rebuttal wrong (Another Rebuttal), or make a point that usually
makes the Rebuttal look stupid and describe the new point in
detail (Argument). The easiest pattern is ARAR (my opinion).
Voting: This is how the winner is decided. I personally believe
that polls should not be used, because anyone who is obsessed
with winning can create (or use) other accounts and vote without
the admins knowing they cheated. I believe that when the debate
is declared over others can comment and choose who to vote.
Grammar: This is important in a debate. You don't need the best
grammar, but it's important to have good grammar. Your arguments
must be readable.
High Quality Debates: This is extremely important. If you make a
low quality debate, no one will join it. Examples for low
quality debate(s) are below. Mods, feel free to add your own.
Pro: Bacon is delicious. Prove me
wrong.
Con: Dude bacon sucks because it tastes bad.
Pro: Uh, no. It tastes delicious.
Con: No, it tastes bad.
The problem with this debate is that it has an opinion, not a
claim. Also, this debate makes it impossible to make good
arguments for both the Pro and the Con.
A debate will go on until a player forfeits. Long debates are
not bad. However, when a debate reaches 50 pages I suggest that
another topic should be made to continue the debate.

The vast majority of this thread goes without saying.

Note this only applies if the participants wish to partake in a
formal debate using the format of a more competitive style.
[s]Informal debates are likely to be the norm in most cases.[/s]
No debates will likely be the norm.
I disagree with the vote system. Debates generally do not have a
winner unless one partakes in a competition. Panel of judges
will have an inherent bias and that's hard to control.

A panel of debate judges is not a bad idea. This would make it
even harder to cheat. I believe that the Instigator should
choose the debate judges, what do you think?

How about just everyone who didn't participate in the debate
votes in the thread? Of course, that's if we decide that a
debate needs a winner.
