Nuzlocke Challenge
By: Walrus365 Date: December 8, 2014, 3:34 pm

I'm sure a good number of you have played pokemon, but have you
guys done a Nuzlocke runthrough? Nuzlocke is pokemon with a
twist, in an effort to make the game more difficult.
The main rule of Nuzlocke dictates that you must release a
pokemon if it faints, simulating it "dying". Other rules
involve a requirement to nickname all pokemon one captures (in
order to increase attachment and loss if a pokemon faints), only
capturing the first pokemon encountered in each patch of grass
or area of capture, and a rule preventing the player from
purchasing any item from marts or other vendors. As you can
imagine, this makes each game heart wrenching and difficult,
quite a step up from the usual pokemon playthrough.
Try it out if you get bored. It's not for the faint of heart.
I'm currently playing a Nuzlocke file of Sapphire. My Shedninja
just died after 5 gyms of honest work. May he rest in peace.

Yeah, I tried something similar with a couple of my brothers. I
think the gameplay rules were the same, but after each gym we
had PvP matches. The winner was allowed to switch any of their
pokemon with one of the loser's, which basically led to begging
and bribery from whoever lost.

That sounds like a very easy way to kill sibling relationships.

After one particularly terrible loss, one of my younger brothers
wouldn't talk to my older brother all day except to scream
abuse.

I feel like that would also lead to an unbalanced team at the
end. The person with the most wins would get better pokemon and
perpetuate the vicious cycle I'm guessing?

Since I'm getting both OR and AS for Christmas because my
grandma spoils me, I'll be doing a Nuzlocke of OR after I beat
AS. Maybe not immediately after, but at some point I hope to try
it.

I would recommend torchic as a starter just because of the sheer
stat gains. Blaziken OP

I was planning on Treecko because I like Sceptile's Mega and I
already have Torchic with the Blazikenite from the event in XY
(although I'm sure you can buy the stones, like for the Kanto
starters). In AS I was going to use Mudkip for similar reasons
(and not because i liek mudkipz. shush.) :P
Now that I think about it, I remember my original reasoning for
wanting to use Treecko. I didn't want to use a starter that had
a type advantage over Team Magma, so Mudkip was out of the
running, and I already explained why I wasn't going to use
Torchic... I guess I'm just looking for trouble. :P Hopefully
this doesn't come back to bit me too hard.

I chose Treecko in Alpha Sapphire. It's definitely the worst
starter (mostly because it's a special attacker, learns mostly
physical moves, and gets no special Dragon STAB until
post-game), but it was certainly fun to play with.
Just a recommendation: don't let it evolve into Grovyle
immediately. Wait until it gets Giga Drain at Level 21. It
won't be able to learn Giga Drain at all if it evolves, and it's
a powerful, useful move that you'll probably keep the whole
game.
