CST Resource: Arete
By: Omni_Builder Date: August 31, 2014, 5:29 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Arete is a set of PDF documents which allow you to create
fantasy characters! It takes no dedication or time commitment,
and a character can be created in about 10 minutes. If you want
to go further, check out some of the supplemental PDFs.
This document doesn't tie in with any game or program, but it is
completely balanced and usable; all you have to do is choose
your character's attributes and write/type them however you
want. You can share your characters, write adventures alongside
others, and build your story however you want.
Main Document (create a character):

Examples (pre-created characters):

World (some information about the world):

Creatures (the monster manual):

Adventures (examples of adventures to start on):

Please let me know if there's anything I should change--hope you
enjoy it!
(P.S. I have a timestamped copy of this document, so please
don't plagiarize it.)

That's really cool- how long did it take you to write it?

No idea--it's been an on-and-off project for a few months now.

The closest CST we have to this would probably be the concept of
"The Hero's Guild". This is a lot more complex in nature and
structured in a way similar to what you would expect from a RPG.
Going to keep reading this thing. I quite like the concept.

It could be interesting to use these character forms to recreate
my own characters in "The Hero's Guild". I'll attempt to do so
later.
I mean the quest system is the main selling feature of the
Hero's Guild CST and can kinda mess with this. (Hey, no guns.
Pretty much the whole thing meshes. This can be the the basis od
the "world". I mean, one big issue we have with most of the CSTs
is that we never do establish a "world" that is relatively
concrete. Nor do we have a concrete lore. Well, I guess a bunch
of them have concrete. Well, the setting of the Hero's Guild
would be taking place in a human kingdom. Kinda overthinking the
whole thing, but we really do kinda need more lore in stuffs.
I'm a bit lazy to write much so all I do is brainstorm.)

Yeah, it seems like this would go well with the Hero's Guild as
it is, as long as it doesn't conflict with any existing plans
you might have. My adventurer creator includes lore throughout
on creatures, characters, and the function and history of magic,
but you can decide how much of it you want to accept.

The lack of armor is an interesting stylistic choice. Any reason
you chose not to include it?

Yep, armor is boring.
Besides, you know that an RPG character can take about 20 sword
hits while wearing a T-shirt, so what's the point of adding an
"armor" metric into the mix?
(If you want your character to be tougher, invest in Endurance,
Protection and Reflexes training.)
