The Codex of Alchemical Engineering
By: Omni_Builder Date: July 6, 2014, 11:30 pm

This is a fantastic--and free--puzzle game about alchemy. It
involves using glyphs and programmable mechanical arms called
"manipulators" to move, transmute and combine atoms, producing
molecules like Sal Ammoniae, Brimstone and Elixir of Life. The
twist is that you have a very limited amount of space to work,
and each manipulator can only run a maximum of 18 basic commands
on a loop. Here's the link:

I particularly like the amazing music, the general creativity,
and the surprising historical accuracy. The game is based on
real alchemical principles, so there are only 13 types of atoms
(the three primes, the four elements, and the six planetary
metals) and the molecules are assembled based on how they were
imagined in older times. I learned a lot more about alchemy from
this game, but it still keeps its focus on the surprisingly
difficult puzzles.
I'm currently on Level X.

After a very intense 90 minutes, I finally beat Level X. Here's
the level code for my inefficient design:

(How do you find all of these addicting games?)
Which level are you currently on?

I'm on Level XI: Black Powder. This level is...mean.
I need to create a molecule in a "+" shape--the center is an
Earth atom, and the surrounding atoms alternate Salt, Sulfur,
Salt, Sulfur. The Glyphs of Spawning produce Earth and Salt.
There are a lot of complications which turn up--in particular,
it isn't enough to just turn Primes into Primes, because then
the whole thing is impossible to accomplish timing-wise. So the
Earth has to be calcitated into Salt, the Salt has to be
transmuted into Sulfur, and it all has to be bound to a raw
Earth atom. I haven't exactly made much of an attempt yet (I
tend to take long breaks between levels), but right now I have
no idea how I'm going to pull this off.
At least this isn't the Codex of Modern Chemistry. I would
imagine that it's a lot more complicated. :)

After an hour and a half, I finally beat level one..... then my
PC crashed.

Remember, you don't have to make the atom perfectly coincide
with the picture at the top--it just has to be anywhere within
the white circle.
Also, are you using the Shift and Ctrl keys? Remember that you
can change the length and orientation of your manipulators.
Congratulations on beating the first level! I'm pretty sure it
should have saved your progress before crashing.
