       Game making tips

       This thread is where you can share any tips or tricks you have
       for making games.
       THIS IS THE ONLY THREAD WHERE YOU ARE ALLOWED TO DOUBLE POST. DO

       Tip 1- Mute the sound of the toolbox and play music on another
       tab. (Or use an MP3 player). Play instrumental music when
       writing dialogue. Play normal music (With a singer, if you like)
       when designing the rest of the level layout.
       Recommended songs/soundtracks:
       The entire kingdom hearts soundtrack
       Death note- L's theme
       X ray dog's music (NOT A RAPPER LIKE IT SOUNDS LIKE :V )
       Or, you could just listen to whatever you want. Point is, don't
       bore yourself. That's probably the last thing you want to do if
       you want to keep your head on straight, especially when
       designing a long level.

       [li]Use the WASD or Arrow keys to move around the level editor
       faster. This can be combined with adding a sprite to make lines
       easier.[/li]
       [li]Sprites that are too far off-screen are inactive and will
       not perform their actions or movements. There is a small buffer
       zone of a couple grip spots where they will activate off-screen.
       Keep this is mind when trying to design special patrol
       patterns![/li]
       [li]Save often! The servers do not save your game data until you
       hit that save or publish button.[/li]
       [li]Criticism is good. It helps you identify areas you can
       improve and can remind you to stay humble. No one is
       perfect![/li]
       [li]Remember that designers can be inspired from many sources!
       Take a walk, think about what you've learned at school, observe
       the environment around you -- designers also often are inspired
       by other games![/li]

       Hopefully these are some useful tips to help everyone with game
       design.

       These are really useful tips! I think I've taken the "Save
       often" one a bit too far, though, since I use the Save button
       somewhat obsessively.
       Here's another tip that I've found helpful recently:

       [li]When designing large levels, build the overall structure of
       the game before creating the details and individual components.
       This makes it much easier to construct neat visuals, and it can
       make your games more non-linear.[/li]

       Also, in response to zenwarrior54, I have to admit that Kingdom
       Hearts represents about 70 percent of the music I listen to. I
       haven't listened to L's Theme or X Ray Dog yet, though.

       Definitely not official. But fun to see a community grow  ;D
       Just wanted to offer some tips.

       [li]Remember that everyone was a new user at some point! They
       have to take their time to grow and learn the ins and outs of
       game design and Gamestar Mechanic that you have already gone
       through[/li]
       [li]Gamestar Mechanic is meant to be an introductory tool into
       game design -- if you've got the interest to continue deeper
       then you should definitely consider more powerful editors like
       Game Maker or GameSalad, or even move onto Unity and
       beyond![/li]
       [li]Playtesting and iteration is a critical step in the game
       design process. It's often hard to see what you may have made a
       mistake in without an outside perspective.[/li]

       I'm pretty sure that it's now officially unofficial.
       As for tips:
       1. Take advantage of the system in some way.  Find a glitch or
       interesting mechanic that you can focus your levels on.  This
       will curb repetitiveness and make your games stand out.
       2. Give your players choices in the game.
