       Alexicon
By: Iaashadow Date: April 19, 2014, 6:54 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Alexicon is My novel I am currently a little over half-way done,
and this is more than anyone I know had ever seen of the book
       [spoiler= RIGHT HERE]
Jadius stepped out of his house and immediately realized why he
needed a jacket. The blustery wind whipped his long, black hair
violently, and he began to shiver in the frigid cold. Making a
quick decision to keep walking, he began his short descent down
the steps into the light snow. The debris and ice crunched under
his feet as he walked down 8th Street. Jadius put his hands in
his pockets to keep out the cold.
He looked at the blanket of snow covering the
road. The 6 a.m. air frisked his skin and made his breath
steamy. The awnings of the shops were white with the snow,
occasional icicles hung from them like small knives that cut
with their cold. He made a quick left turn to an especially
small shop, the only one he knew was open. Jadius stepped
through the open door and rang a small bell near the counter. He
pulled out a seat and sat down.
“I’ll be right out!” a voice said from the back. “I usually
don’t get customers on a day like this, with all the snow, and
given how it’s barely 6 in the morning”
“I guess I’m an early riser.” Jadius said.
A moment later a tall man emerged from the back. The man was
clothed in a white shirt with an unbuttoned black coat. His
blonde hair was greased back as if he were in a wind tunnel. He
had a serious yet relaxed look to him. His face was slim with
       full eyebrows.
“Good to see you again, this place is bloody empty around this
time usually.” He said, “But all the better to talk isn’t it?”
       “Yes Mr. Erickson” Jadius said.
“You don’t have to call me that; I’m not your teacher. Just call
       me Phoenix”
       “Sure”
“Need some early morning coffee Jadius?”
       “Yes please”
“I’ll see to that” Phoenix walked to the back of the store and
pulled a lever and punched in something on a metal keypad, “The
       usual?”
“Yes, just something to warm me up”
Phoenix Erickson ran a Xiri and parts shop on eighth street.
Xiri was a new blue-ish form of energy that was used to power
fancy appliances. Phoenix had taken a liking to since it was
very popular in the richer Hellington community.
“It is mighty cold outside, but that’s just January for you,
enjoy the wind and snow while it’s here” He picked up a mug and
placed it under the contraption. Coffee came out of the faucet
       to fill the mug.
       “Oh Technology” Jadius said, smiling.
“This thing is simple; I built it myself, just some circuitry
and coffee beans” Phoenix walked to the front of the store and
placed the mug on the counter. “So I hear you have an upcoming
       event?”
“Yes actually, tomorrow. I’m going to get a pilot’s license”
“I didn’t think you could, after you know”
“Yea” Jadius said. He had an airship mentor until around a month
ago. The man decided he wanted to tour the pacific, and was
never heard from again. “But, the committee said I didn’t need a
mentor to get the license, I just can’t complete the ceremony,
because I need my mentor to you know, fly with me”
“Well, that’s just a treat, because I heard your parents got you
a shiny new airship, I wish my parents would have gotten me
something like that when I was your age”
       “I guess I’m just lucky”
“Yes, you are lucky, I can fly an airship, but I have no idea if
I can suddenly ‘be’ your mentor, I’m probably not even listed as
       a professional”
“My parents can work something out, I’m sure, and I’ll call the
       shop if they do”
“That’d be nice; I’d love to have a fake adventure”
“Very funny” Jadius said. “Although you’re about right, the
course they give you is easier to fly than it is to walk from
       here to my house”
       “True”
“So what has been happening with you?”
“I’ve been reading The Helington Press lately; it’s quite
       interesting”
“Phoenix, that paper's complete garbage, last month they
published a story about how the French government is forcing its
citizens to take mysterious pills in secret, they make up
       anything they print”
“Not true, they let their readers send them ‘stories’ no matter
if they have proof or not, but that’s not important, look at
       this article”
Phoenix handed Jadius a cut-out piece of newspaper.
       BREAKING NEWS:
Professor J. P. Winston has discovered a source of INFINITE
ENERGY. A glowing rock found in the ocean can produce enough
energy to power the whole world! However, he has decided to let
YOU, our readers, to get a part in this, just send in a letter
and he will allow you to purchase energy created from this
AMAZING POWER SOURCE. Write in today!
"It's a hack, a scam, In other words what this paper is known
for" Jadius slid the clipping nonchalantly back to Phoenix.
"Not exactly" Phoenix put the clipping back in a drawer. "This
'glowing rock' does exist and is currently held by a wealthy man
by the name of Helton Whittier. After the group that found it
decided it was useless they sold it for a heap of money"
"But what? It glows, wonderful, but I don't believe for a second
that it produces infinite energy. As I said before, the
Hellington press is a scam-paper, not a newspaper"
"Just pointing something out" Phoenix said
Jadius drained his coffee and looked around. He had always
admired phoenix's shop, he bought the smallest space and re-did
the inside, the walls were painted white, the celling blue, and
all the furniture was a dark brown and comfy, giving a homey
feel, at least that's what Jadius thought. As he was gazing
around at the walls, he caught sight of the clock.
"It's six thirty, I need to go, I'll be back in an hour!" Jadius
shouted and grabbed his coat and headed to the door.
"See you then" Phoenix yelled from the back.
Jadius swung the door open and stepped back into the morning
streets. He stopped just outside the covering of the awning to
look around. 8th was rarely empty and one would usually never
get to see it that way. Jadius always saw it as more peaceful in
the morning, especially on a snowy day such as this one.
       “Up early aren’t you”
Jadius looked towards the voice. A girl about 15 stood there,
clad in a black leather coat and black pants that had no visible
buttons anywhere. She was holding her wool hat to the side and
her not-quite-neat brown hair lay down to her shoulders.
“I know you; you’re the girl who lives in the foster home!”
       Jadius said
“Flora Bernard, thank you, and yes, I do live in a foster home,
and I know you live in a mansion”
“Well, yeah, sorry I didn’t mean that to sound like an insult”
       Jadius said, his face reddening
“It’s fine, it’s what most people know about me anyway” Flora
put her hair behind her shoulders. “I’ve always wondered whose
shop that was, you know, right? I mean you just walked out of
       it.”
“Oh yeah, this is Phoenix’s shop. Do you know him?”
“No, I’ve never heard of him, what does he sell?”
“Xiri stuff for the most part, but he has coffee and occasional
       pastries in there.”
“I was really just passing by, but thanks anyways!” Flora walked
away almost running down the street towards her home.
“Huh.” Jadius turned on a heel and walked back to his house.
       “Marcus McConnell”
Jadius had been standing in a crowd of identically dressed
teens for an hour now while the host called name after name. He
wasn’t calling them in any order so it was impossible to tell
when you were going to be called.
       “James Cooney”
Jadius pulled the white cap over his eyes a little more. It was
getting close to noon and the glare was getting a little too
       much.
       “Jacob Dillard”
Jadius originally intended to count what name he was but had
lost track by now, the only thing he wanted to do was get the
license and go home. He didn’t need an introductory course to
       fly an airship.
       “Jadius Macklin”
Jadius snapped out of his stupor and pushed his way to the
short flight of stairs up to the red-carpeted platform. He
adjusted his white suit and cap so that he looked mildly
       presentable.
“Are you Jadius Macklin?” The slightly rotund host asked Jadius
       “Yes” Jadius said.
“Jadius, congratulations, here is your pilot’s license that you
have earned over 2 years of training. Oh, and by the way kid,
you have no mentor so you’ll be skipping the introductory
       flight”
“That’s fine” Jadius walked down the back staircase, glanced
around for any automobile, and began the mile walk back to his
       not-so-humble home.
“Need a ride?” Phoenix leaned out the window of his small car.
“Sure, why not?” Jadius jumped into the passenger seat. “So
       where are we going?”
“Oh you know the usual, I have to meet up with the landlord,
pick up some parts for a project, oh!” Phoenix winked at Jadius
“and pick up today’s copy of the Hellington Press” Jadius let
       out a hardly suppressed sigh.
       --
CRASH! Something had just fallen to the floor. Jamesson knew
that wasn’t good. Winston always hated messes and he was sure
this was no exception. He checked his watch, only one hour till
Winston came back, better make this quick. Jamesson hurries up
to the study and saw that the glowing rock had fallen off of its
pedestal and was now in pieces on the floor.
“He’s going to be furious when he sees this” Jamesson muttered
to himself, “He had the bidders coming here today, it’s not like
       he’s not rich enough already…”
Jamesson got out his broom and pan from the closet and began
sweeping up the pieces. “I told him he should have gotten it a
case, no but it’s just a rock, a rock these men will pay
millions for! And now it’s broken, damn you Winston, wait”
Jamesson bent over to pick something up. “What’s this?” Jamesson
help an even brighter crystal in his hand. “So that rock had an
inside, I see now well then Winston, we may still have some
profit yet” He set the crystal on the pedestal and continued to
       clean.
