Well, TECHNICALLY...
By: Zenwarrior54 Date: April 10, 2014, 11:08 pm

What we've been doing this whole time isn't actually technically
Role Playing, because that would imply that we are assuming the
roles of our own characters.
Undead, Uncontrollable [Series], The Hero's Guild, The Exiled,
The Conflict and Code.Catalyst are, because of the way we play
them, interactive collaborative story telling. Examples:
ROLE PLAYING
*Turns to Joe, with a puzzled expression* Hmm, I dunno, Joe. How
many licks DOES it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a
tootsie pop?
WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING
Lennie then turned to Joe, with a puzzled expression. "Hmm, I
dunno, Joe. How many licks DOES it take to get to the tootsie
roll center of a tootsie pop?"
The difference is, what we've been doing is actually
interesting. Role Playing is sort of boring because there is no
plot tension.
CARRY ON, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

Thank you for addressing this. Occasionally, people I know ask
what it is I'm talking about (in the context of the forum) and I
refer to this as writing a "collaborative short story with
random internet people". Still, when typing things out, the
abbreviation for RP is more convenient than CSS or ICST.
Not that this is relevant in any way. Nor does this affect
anything.

It's fun. I'm not even sure how many people do this.

It is fun, shown largely by the fact that the Role
Play/Collaborative Story Telling board has eclipsed everything
else here and is one of the main signs of life here.
I think it would be pretty hard to actually establish something
like this in most places as you need a moderate amount of people
to make it appear in the manner say the Uncontrollable series
looks. This would be accomplished much easier with a smaller
pool of people, although that would decrease the variety of
style and ideas. Trying to do this in a larger group would also
be difficult as it will be extremely easy for everything to get
out of hand.
It's quite the interesting experience.

Hmm... the only other site I've ever roleplayed on is a writing
site, and writers usually roleplay in the third person, anyways,
because then they can use the excuse that "I'm not updating my
story right now because I need to practice writing this
collaborative story."

I'm usually the one who just says role-playing... if I say
"collaborative story telling with random people online" like Box
then I'm worried that somebody will ask for more of an
explanation and just think "Oh, he means role-playing. Why
didn't he say so?"

Luckily my mom doesn't know what roleplaying is. So it works,
for me.
Anyways, writing in the third person really does help get you
some writing and characterization experience.

Yeah, definitely. I prefer it, to be honest.

I like it. Real RPs are not that fun. We come up with epic
stories this way.
