9tailz creates things

At some point I'll put some good stuff up here (depends on if I
can get the scanner to work), but for now, have a devamped
Zoroark sprite. I scratched the sprite and used Charmeleon's
Red/ Blue sprite for the colors. I think it took me about 20-30
minutes.

Oh, here's another one. This time it's Absol.

Thanks!
I made a wolf out of snow today. It's really small, but I got a
cool picture with it. Warning- large images.

Update: My brother requested that I make a Ralts, so here it is.

If anyone has requests for devamped Pokemon sprites, I would
love to do them!
Update 2: Made a Pokemon sprite splice, using Garchomp and
Haxorus.

Now those are awesome! You are a great artist. What are the
sprites for? Also, do you use pixels to draw them?

Thanks! The sprites are just for fun. To draw the ones like
Zoroark I get colors from another sprite. I draw a sketch with
my tablet (I find it easier than using the mouse) in MS Paint
and then fix the sprite up with the mouse. I use the Pencil to
draw each pixel and use the bucket fill or eraser to add color.
Splices use sprites from the Pokemon games (you can find sprite
sheets all over the internet to use) and I take parts from each
Pokemon sprite and combine them. Then I recolor the sprite.
Splices usually take longer because of all of the recoloring and
reshading you have to do, especially if you use a bunch of
Pokemon. The Red/ Blue style sprites only take me about 30
minutes because of their simplicity, but if I tried to scratch a
sprite in 4th or 5th gen style it would take a lot longer.

sprites.

Well, here's a tutorial for the devamped sprites! Hopefully
everything makes sense. If not, I'll be happy to clarify.
[spoiler]1.
HTML http://s28.postimg.org/638ucc33x/Devamp_tutorial_1.png
First, you need to decide upon the Pokemon/ whatever you're
spriting. Get a reference image if needed. Next, find a
Pokemon sprite from the Red or Blue games (Yellow had a
different style of spriting) (go here for them
HTML https://www.spriters-resource.com/game_boy/pokerb/)
that has
colors that match the Pokemon to be sprited, which is a Shaymin
in this case. Old sprites only have 4 colors- white, black, and
two shades of one color. This means that even if your Pokemon
has a plethora of different colors, you have to choose the best
color scheme for it. If you can't decide, it's easy to recolor,
so don't worry. I've chosen Bulbasaur for this sprite because
Shaymin's main color are white and green. Finally, create a box
60x60 pixels. That's the maximum size for a Red/Blue sprite,
and you don't want to go beyond that.
2.
HTML http://s14.postimg.org/ft1pjppzl/Devamp_tutorial_2.png
Next, you need to copy the colors from Bulbasaur's sprite. Keep
in mind that the black color on the sprites is different from
the true black color- it has a reddish tinge. The white is the
same though, so go ahead and use the medicine dropper tool to
copy the two shades of color and the black. Use the paintbrush
to make little boxes of color. Then, use the select tool to drag
them down next to the box where you're going to make the sprite.
3.
HTML http://s10.postimg.org/5r90yfiuh/Devamp_tutorial_3.png
Hoo... this is getting to the tough part. Draw a sketch of the
Pokemon in the box. Don't worry about it being perfect- you'll
have to clean it up later anyway. Just make sure it has the pose
you want and fits in the box. As you can see, my sketch looks
like someone took a pixel shoe and smashed a pixel bug and its
pixel guts got everywhere, so if it looks bad at first, don't
worry about it.
4.
HTML http://s28.postimg.org/dcchvg531/Devamp_tutorial_4.png
Ahh, that's much better! To clean up your sprite, go around and
erase any additional sketch lines (for example, circles that I
used for the flower) and make all of the lines so they are
joined only diagonally (this makes a lot more sense with the
picture...). The only exception here is where an edge tapers off
to a sharp point or there are two lines from different parts
lying next to each other (for example, the petals and the front
legs, respectively). Also, the eye is bound to look weird, so
don't worry about it too much. It'll look better with color.
5.
HTML http://s28.postimg.org/smq57v4ql/Devamp_tutorial_5.png
Use the bucket fill tool to fill in the basic color sections.
This will probably look flat, especially where the sprite's
color isn't the true color of the subject. That's where shading
comes in.
6.
HTML http://s24.postimg.org/fo5t2m2th/Devamp_tutorial_6.png
Now for the hardest part- shading. asdfghjkl
Okay. In Pokemon sprites, the light always comes from the top
left corner, so you need to remember that then shading. The top
of the sprite (Shaymin's spikes (I think it's a hedgehog...))
can be highlighted with the color one shade lighter than it, and
vice versa for anything that would be in a shadow. It helps a
lot if you have a grip on shading beforehand- I'm bad at
explaining things and shading is kind of hard. -_- For the spots
in Shaymin's spikes, I didn't outline them because it would
cause too much cluttering. Instead I just added white spots.
For the flower, I decided to make most of it white but have a
green shadow so it didn't look so green. Another thing to keep
in mind is textures. For Shaymin's fur, it's "cross-hatched" or
something. The variation makes it look like fur, while on the
flower and leaves the shading is smoother, which makes them
appear to have a smooth surface. For the eyes, all I can tell
you is to keep the iris mostly dark. A lighter spot is fine if
you have room, but against white, the lighter shade doesn't show
up as well. Against a black background, it doesn't matter as
much because both shades are far lighter than black. For the
very, very top of the sprite, if it's all white and the
highlight color, you can add the shading color over the black,
which shows that that section is lighter than the rest of the
sprite. I recommend doing this sparingly. Lastly, if there is a
detail that is softer and doesn't need to be black, you can
change it to the shading or highlight color if it contrasts with
the background (the marks on the flower).
7.
HTML http://s13.postimg.org/pegznfokj/Devamp_tutorial_7.png
Use the select tools to grab everything except your sprite, and
cut it from the picture. Select the sprite and drag it to the
top left corner and then use the blue things to make the rest of
the screen close around it.
8.
HTML http://s28.postimg.org/w2nbej8al/Devamp_tutorial_8.png
Last, but most certainly not least- SAVE THE IMAGE AS A PNG. It
keeps the high resolution of the sprite and doesn't do anything
screwy with it. SAVE IT AS A PNG, AND NOTHING. ELSE.

Pokemon sprite splice tutorial coming soon, along with
instructions for recoloring.
