MLP

I feel like this thread is going to become pretty necessary once
more people start joining. So, yeah--if you have anything
MLP-related you want to post, post it here.
I'll start the thread with some interesting facts regarding
mythology:
---
The villain Ahuizotl is based on a creature of the same name
from Aztec legend. The hand on his tail (which, as seen in
Season 4, is extremely strong) is used to drag victims into the
river to drown them. His name literally means "spiny aquatic
thing," since his spikes are actually clumps of waterproof fur.
Oh, and he also has a taste for human eyes, nails and teeth.
The Windigoes (I think that's how you spell it?) from Season 2
are based on Ithaqua the Wind Walker (a.k.a. The Wendigo) from
the Cthulhu Mythos. That means EACH Windigo is a legendary
eldritch horror (and there are at least 3 of them.)
Finally, the giant worm from season 4 is referred to as a
Tatzlwurm, a creature from Alpine folklore. Its poison is said
to kill humans instantly (which is why it was strong enough to
affect Discord). However, it also seems to be based on the
Graboids from the comedy-horror film Tremors.
Also, check out this page
HTML http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ShoutOut/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic<br
/>on TVTropes for a list of all the references included througho
ut
the show. Apparently the writers really like Blazing Saddles (to
say nothing of The Big Lebowski).

Ok, with this thread comes a new rule, DO NOT GO OFF ON MLP
TANGENTS ON ANY OTHER THREAD (not official, but come on, there's
no problem with you guys liking it, just don't clog the other
threads)
of course this currently isn't a problem

Sounds good--with most forums, there will always be the
inevitable flame war, but this forum is small enough that it
shouldn't happen for the time being. So, all MLP comments here,
all Starcraft comments on the Starcraft thread, all Minecraft
comments on one of our Minecraft threads, etc.
In MLP related news, check out the original design for the Ursa
Major below. They ended up changing it because it looked too
different from the Minor (and it might have been a bit too
frightening for an all-ages show).

However, the official Ursa Major did inspire this piece of
Pacific Rim fanart:

Well, "bronies" just got (another) wired.com article. I think
that the article is a great descriptor of the fandom, and it's
well worth reading. You can find it here:

I don't see the point of this. We go off on tangents on
different subjects all the time. MLP shouldn't be any
different, if it happens to come up.

Well I guess it isn't any sort of problem at all, so whatever,
I'm not the admin

Cool, someone else posted! Now I can post more stuff!
Here, have some videos. I, uh, tend to obsessively bookmark lots
of things on the internet.

So, let's talk special relativity.
I always liked the episode "It's About Time," because the
portrayal of time travel was very clever and didn't succumb to
the typical time-travel plot holes (though there were a couple
paradoxes). But remember this equation?
[img width=500
height=568]
HTML http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-28KuGxB_9v4/T1xjnOf2l0I/AAAAAAAAiLQ/ggWe_MVuwx8/s1600/1+%25282%2529.jpg[/img]
This talking purple unicorn was on the verge of deriving an
extremely useful application of the Lorentz equations
HTML http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorentz_equations,
which provide
insights into both electromagnetism and special relativity. As
shown in the image, the equation is for "time dilation at
constant acceleration." (Disclaimer - I know nothing about this.
I just looked it up.)
This implies that magical time travel is governed by the science
of relativity, and also that Twilight Sparkle is at least five
years ahead of me academically. The only thing she hasn't
noticed is that the equation can be expressed as a hyperbolic
arcsine (trigonometry has some weird terms), but it looks like
she's pretty close to figuring that out too. I knew she was
smart, but wow...

So, uh, I just watched the finale.
I found it really, really good (just like pretty much everyone
whose opinion I've heard today). But did anyone notice this...?
The plot of the finale:
The villain, a huge demonic monster whose normal-ish
form is a thin, deceptively frail-looking person, obtains
godlike powers and the ability to create gigantic
watercolor-style blasts of death. The immortal
double-double-crosser realizes that he wanted friends more than
unlimited power--a little bit too late. Almost all the
characters from the show, including the main character's
enigmatic mentor figure, are defeated in some way or another.
Finally the main character, a prodigy in a science-based magic
system, gets REALLY angry and delivers a huge beatdown on the
indestructible villain. Eventually they are able to vaporize
him. The villain is sent to the show's version of the
underworld, and the hundreds of thousands of souls he stole are
released.
The plot of the "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" finale:
See previous spoiler.
Weird, right?
