A CST[/center]
Outside, the heat of the planet’s dying sun has grown so
great that to step outside for more than a few hours is a death
sentence. Humanity now lives in massive metal Domes connected
by underground tunnels. Solar panels lie on top of the Domes to
collect energy that is used to grow food. Hunters wearing
protective equipment are sent outside to forage for food and
necessary materials. Each Dome essentially has its own
government – while several Domes may be united under one
central authority, the governor of each Dome has almost total
power.
It is obvious that humanity cannot last long. Scientists have
decided that their last hope is to modify the human body, in
order to let it withstand the harsh temperatures outside for
longer periods than protective equipment allows. The
modifications are also their best chance of allowing humanity to
survive in space or on other planets, which they will have to do
when their star finally engulfs their planet.
This body and mind modification technology, while far from
perfected, has advanced far enough that prototype versions are
available to the general public. These prototypes are immensely
popular: in fact, it is almost considered a tradition to get a
modification procedure when one becomes an adult. Those who
have undergone such a procedure, known as a “Mod,”
are referred to as “Modded.”
However, Mods come at a cost. Scientists have not yet perfected
the procedure, and reports of numbness or tingling in the
affected area are common. More importantly, for every attribute
a procedure adds, it makes the Modded person lose one of their
natural abilities as a human. To prevent this effect from
adding up, each person is allowed only one Mod, barring
exceptional cases.
Be aware that there are some who dispute this rule, and for the
sake of humanity, push for Mods to be made less restricted, or
even mandatory. One terrorist group, the Corpus Noir, has taken
this philosophy to new extremes: the Noir kidnap people, force
them to undergo extreme or multiple Mods, and then either
indoctrinate them or release them back into society to display
their handiwork. Some political groups sympathize with the
goals if not the practices of the Noir, and are pushing for
ethical boundaries to be bypassed in favor of humanity’s
survival.
The Noir have gained particular prevalence in the Dome of Vreme,
and are viewed by the government as a serious threat to society.
To deal with them, a government counter-terrorism group called
the Watchers has been created, which fights against what they
perceive as a major threat to society. But what could be worse
than humanity’s gradual extinction as the sun dries their
planet to the bone?

RULES:
1) Listen to admins and mods, as usual. Nitrox is the GM.
2) You may make no more than 3 characters without permission.
3) The GM reserves the right to request changes to your
character, particularly his or her Mods in order to ensure
balance.
4) Your first character must be Modded, and you can only have
one non-Modded character.
5) Be logical, don’t be overpowered, and don’t bunny
characters without permission.
Put careful consideration into the effects and drawbacks of your
Mods: try to make them as logical as possible. The drawback
should be connected to the Mod, and the drawback should be
something that would reasonably affect the character negatively
in the CST. The technology is not complete yet, and so really
powerful or complicated Mods are unlikely. Expect Corpus Noir
members to have more powerful Mods and more debilitating
drawbacks. Here are examples of acceptable and non-acceptable
mods (feel free to use the acceptable ones):
BAD: Leg Mod allowing for faster running speed at the cost of
the sense of taste.
GOOD: Leg Mod allowing for faster running speed at the cost of
coordination.
(Sense of taste is unrelated to the legs, and is unlikely to
change the course of the story.)
BAD: Brain Mod that makes mental processes to run at the speed
of a supercomputer, allowing for near-instant calculations,
amazing observation and memory, and the ability to quickly
analyze the situation and the best course of action, at the cost
of emotions.
GOOD: Brain Mod allowing for memories to be stored to a
permanent but limited mental hard drive at the cost of some
memory outside the hard drive, so it would be harder to
recognize faces, places, abstract concepts
(Supercomputer mind is too far-reaching and OP even for a Corpus
Noir member.)
The setting of Alter is more dystopian, and there is likely a
higher amount of violence on the streets; still, blatantly
offensive Mods (like a rocket launcher instead of an arm) are
likely to be held only by Corpus Noir members, or by hunters who
go outside the Dome regularly. Technology besides Mods is about
at the same level as the present day, except that the Internet
does not exist, non-biological dense information storage is
difficult (so personal computers are rare), and the space
program, while still in relative infancy, is focusing more on
finding habitable planets than setting up satellites and the
like.
It’s OK if you don’t get this on the first try, but
let the GM change things if necessary.

Bio: Kidnapped by the Corpus Noir at a young age, Kingsley was
given the ability to fly using a stylized jetpack apparatus
attached to his back by their experiments. However, the
invasive procedure, requiring heatproof armor plating to replace
his lower back and legs, left permanent consequences: Kingsley
is unable to walk (or move much at all, really) on his own, and
is confined to a wheelchair. He persevered in the face of
injury and began a political career, and thanks to his tragic
past and commitment to stopping the Noir, was elected Governor
of Vreme. Since then, he has passed legislation that makes Mods
safer and cracks down on unauthorized Modding. He is widely
known for his friendliness and calmness, although he has
sometimes been criticized for having a secretive personality.

Bio: Lucia was a famed and popular singer, known for her wide
range and soft, quivering notes. Four days ago, however, she was
inexplicably kidnapped and brutally beaten; allegedly, it was
the work of the Corpus Noir, but neither a proper motive nor
substantial evidence has come forward. In the process of the
attack her lungs were torn out, leaving her to suffocate on the
street. Luckily she was found quickly, and an operation was done
to install a new mod still in its early alpha stages. Lucia's
mod is a life-support system working as a pacemaker as well as a
partial replacement for her lungs and vocal cords. It's
beginning to fail, however...
Mod Bonus: Life support. Her mod allows her to live.
Mod Drawback: The life support is imperfect and as of now the
only one of its kind. The original designer was killed shortly
after developing it. She's reaching the end of the machine's
life, and it's starting to break down. As of the beginning of
Alter, she has three days to live before the mod gives out and
she dies.

Bio: Always a pessimistic and growing tired of the limitations
imposed by the governments within the domes, loosing faith in
their ability to preserve the human population, Nepal joined
Corpus Noir. He simply stated, for what mod he wished, Nepal
asked for the ability to "see the future of the human race", and
was given his new face.
After receiving the powerful modification, Nepal quickly climbed
the inner ranks within the organization, fulfilling missions
swiftly, despite his pessimistic nature. After many years, he
found himself as an adviser for planning and approving organized
missions requiring mobilization of multiple members. At the same
time, he has noticed that his already aging body wasn't taking
physically demanding jobs quite as well. Spending less time
doing these, he focuses on his now role in CN, as well as
residing in a building provided by the organization, which he
uses as a regular meeting room for CN. He also doubles it as a
facility for meditation; Opening a meditation center for
teaching and allowing other people within the domes to come in
and meditate, and give an occasional piece of advice.

seen the murder, thus, such an event never took place."
Mod Bonus: Nepal's face was completely removed; It was replaced
with a silvery metal mask, attacked to the bone of his skull,
with a crown-like top, and only has two slits for where his eyes
normally would be. This device lets him see in inferred and
ultraviolet, as well as nightvision. Nepal can also fire rays of
metal-cutting lasers from the eye-slits in his mask.
Mod Drawback: Complete lack of color vision, normal sight is
almost nonexistanct, merely capable of making out general shapes
and distances. His neck, to suport the heavy equipment on his
face, was installed with extra bars for support, so his range of
motion in that area is severely limited.

Bio: Jestina and her younger sister Deneen were happily raised
by lower-middle-class parents, both working in civil service,
when Deneen was critically injured by an accident with a
motorized bike. The man involved in the accident managed to
escape charges because he hadn’t been conclusively
identified, and Jestina’s family was unable to pay for the
extensive Mods required to save Deneen from permanent paralysis.
The Corpus Noir contacted Jestina, and their doctors
successfully treated Deneen, granting her incredibly powerful
mechanical legs, in exchange for Jestina’s promise to act
as an enforcer for them. She received an arm cannon Mod from
them, with which she hunted down the motorcycle driver that ran
into Deneen, and now is a loyal member of the Noir frequently
called upon for dirtier jobs. She relies on the Noir for
housing and food, since her Mod is easily recognizable.
Mod Bonus: Jestina’s right arm (she’s left-handed)
has been replaced with a metal cannon that can fire projectiles.
Scrap metal from the ground or specialized projectiles like
grenades will both work.
Mod Drawback: The arm is virtually unusable now, and needs to be
charged every night in order to function. Use of the arm in
enclosed spaces can release noxious fumes. Using the arm causes
significant recoil that throws Jestina off balance.

Bio: Oliver Willhoff grew up in Korak, a small town turned into
a rather quiet and peaceful dome. He was quite the rebellious
teenager, modifying his body and becoming a very
anti-establishment activist, particularly advocating for more
mods and more space technology. While his stance on mods hasn't
changed, as he moved into adulthood he became a much more
relaxed man, starting a few businesses and putting his past
behind him. Recently he was appointed by the governor for his
management skills, and that is where he works.
Willhoff is confident in his own abilities, and believes he can
and should offer assistance to what is right whenever and
wherever he can.
Mod Bonus: Both of his hands are metal, and contain powerful
cores that allow him to give electrical power to various
machines and things. He is effectively a mobile power source.
Mod Drawback:The cores in his hands are incredibly volatile and
if damaged will poison his arms, causing a need for amputation.
They also are quite flammable, and an open flame near an exposed
hand can be quite dangerous or deadly for him.

Bio: Grace grew up in a poor neighborhood in a dome several
miles away. Her family moved to Vreme when she was 16 and rented
a small apartment. There she was captured by Corpus Noir and
given a combat mod. After working for them as a hitman for a
year she decided to work on her own. She got a job as a bouncer
and occasionally does some recreational fighting in her spare
time. However Noir still has an eye on her, and would love to
have her in their service once again.
Grace is strong willed but generally bitter about things in
general. It's hard to get her to open up. However she loves
fighting, always has, and her mod just made her better at it.
Mod Bonus: MagTec's Pattern combat mod. Grace can predict
movements with incredible accuracy, and her reaction time is
superhuman. The mod itself will influence her brain to perform
certain actions in certain situations, allowing for quicker and
more effective movement.
Mod Drawback: Grace is hyper reactionary and cannot keep still
or hide. Any sort of surprise movement triggers an auto reaction
from her mod which can often be assault. She basically can't
operate in an environment where random acts of violence aren't
tolerated.

The Rat had to fend for himself from a very early age. He
came to terms with the fact that in order to survive in the
world, one would have to take matters into their own hands. That
is exactly what he did. He stole, he fought, he delivered.
Eventually, he made a name for himself as "The Rat", the city's
best information broker within the underground. His title was
derived from his ability to infiltrate/spy on any group and
weasel himself out of danger's way. The Rat became well known
for having a silver tongue and analysis skills as well as having
acquired tricks of the trade from most of The Sewer Ewer.
Upon reaching thirty years of age, he and his companions
founded The Sewer Ewer, and underground pub named aptly due to
its close proximately the sewerage system. Here, the most vile
of filth is collected and many of the contemptible entities
reside here if not in one of the various other criminal sectors.
The Rat has some friends in high places, namely in the
governor's cabinet. They plant false information and keep the
Watcher's off their heels. Watcher's and Corpus Noir members
alike come to The Rat seeking information and for a price they
can deal in the most lucrative trade: knowledge.
The Sewer Ewer has various facilities and shops. Some of
the more prominent ones include a human trafficking center which
can be located by traversing deep into the network. There they
deal in slaves, forced marriages, organs, human cuisine,
corpses, and mod transplants. There also exists multiple
gambling centers with one of the more popular ones allowing you
to bet mods are mod components.
More normal establishments such as "massage parlors, banks,
pharmacies, and the Ewer guard building" exist in the system as
well. In short, it is the city withing the city, home to only
the dregs of society.
Near the "surface" of the operation exists a mod workshop,
displaying basic illegal mods, or mods that are more compatible
with children. Under the surface lies on of the cities largest
mod laboratories, all 100% illegal and highly volatile. They
have also developed what they call, "External Mods". These
devices function similarly to normal mods but have minimum
number of drawbacks. Although dubbed "External Mods", they are
simply tools (often weaponry and clothing) with either very
short bursts of output or sustained periods of minimal output.
The Rat has a good friend in each of the aforementioned
sectors with a nickname aptly suited to their profession.
Mod Bonus: The Rat has an eye mod that allows for noticing the
finer movements that a person makes during a conversation. This
allows him to detect emotional states,
Mod Drawback: The Rat loses some degree of vision on
non-humanlike shapes, to pick up on very, very minute changes
requires the cutting out of his peripheral vision. Mod is only
in one eye so if vision is cut off from that side, he'll just
have to rely on his own talent (which is already quite
sufficient). Sacrifices some degree of farsight in the modded
eye. Needs somewhat frequent tuning.
External Mods:
Silken Shoes - Plain shoes with a custom made sole with a very
minute device that further dampens The Rat's footsteps alongside
his manner of walking. Minimal effect, basically just
comfortable shoes.
Black Mantle - Wards off heat, chills, and radiation to a small
degree. It is dyed a nice absorptive black. Nice and flowy.
Clothing - Made from a similar material to the mantle but with a
duller color.
Visor - One way visor that blocks others from seeing his eyes as
clearly. Allows him to see vague heat signatures at a close
range. Cannot operate for very long at all.
Appearance: So middle aged dude in black, generally covered

Nickname: The Gorging Gorgon

Occupation: The heiress and current head of Baemu Corp, one of
the leading companies in producing avant garde food.

Bio:
The Bolgan family has always been heavily vested in the
harvests and the hunting that has persisted through the decades
of living under a dome. Miriam is the new head of the company
who has greatly advanced the scope of the variety of food stuffs
that they produce. With her specialized modification, she is at
the forefront of gourmet sampling and strives to turn everything
into something fit for human consumption.
Using her position as both head of a food company and as
one of the primary food testers,
she is able to eat to her heart's content. She is quite a
glutton, more so because her mod forces her to be one.
Nonetheless, she enjoys the time she gets to spend eating very
much.... if not a bit too much. Part of her mod was specifically
tailored for her to be eat others of her kind, a wondrous rush
that brings her the most joy of all.
She maintains a slim figure and a body fat percentage of
13% through her mod and generally maintains a weight of around
80kg. She has various contacts in the Sewer Ewer to procure some
of her goods and is connected to her company's own hunter group.
Mod Bonus:Digestive system type mod. She is able to consume most
types of organic matter without suffering much damage as her
system will analyze and filter out the harmful components. By
consuming human flesh, she is able to partially add it to her
own muscle mass and bulk up.
Mod Drawback: Needs to consume humans on a semi-regular basis
for her body proteins to not denature. Metabolic rate is very,
very high and energy consumption rates are very high. Needs to
eat very frequently. Has a mildly dulled sense of taste which
annoys her to no end.
Appearance: Similar-ish in appearance to an older Meiko from her
Vocaloid 3 box.

Nickname: Courier/Loot

made a teenage male character)
Occupation: Courier for The Sewer Ewer

Bio:
Lute is one of the poster children used as the Ewer's
walking billboards. This group of kids directly apprentice under
the instruction of the Rat and his companions, each learning to
potentially succeed them in their trade. On the side of legal
documentation, all of them are considered adopted children by a
certain Mister Dirth Haze. As his nickname suggests, his current
job mostly revolves being the resident errand boy, delivering
packages left and right. In doing so, he is fostering his own
speechcraft ability, something essential in most forms of
business. he is grateful for the opportunity as it solves his
monetary issues and gives him some extra crach which he uses to
send back to the orphanage which raised him.
As someone simply wishing to survive in the grim existence
of life, Lute has come to accept the fact that the Black Market
is essential to the city's well being. He is not found of the
human trafficking business but he knows that he can do nothing
about it. As they all say, "You can't outrat The Rat." He's
received a pledge that no one from his particular orphanage will
be targeted by The Rat himself, a man whose words carry weight
in the part of the world he resides in.

External Mods/Gear:
Clothing - Standard issue heat, cold, and radiation resistance
layering for when a delivery to the buffer zone or the outside
is required.
Amp Bracers - For brief periods of time, the bracelets contract
upon his arm muscles, forcing them to strain themselves for
small bursts of extra strength
Carry Weight Gauntlets - Similar to the amp bracers although
these cause no strain upon his arm. He has to pay for recharges
and is only used when making deliveries.
Motorrad - A type of weak, powered bike. Doesn't pay for the
fuel too often so he ends up cycling for the majority of the
time
Syringes - Emergency use only. Filled with various experimental
concoctions that supply mod like regeneration power, paralysis
poison, adrenaline boost, or physical steroid. Has similar
detrimental effects to the body as over using a mod.

Bio: Rico, at 15, was already a member of the Corpus Noir. He
was a young enforcer who fought using the unusual tactic of
equipping himself with prosthetics and armor, and relying on
melee combat with a longsword. As the work got dirtier and he
found out more as he ascended through the organization, he found
out the rotten truth at their core and went rogue.
He now works for the Watchers, a government-funded group of
agents who aim to bring down the Corpus Noir.
Mod Bonus: He has two separate mods- one that he had installed
during his early years in the Noir, and one installed shortly
before he left.
The first is a standard prosthetic, which replaces the bone in
the upper arm and the entire right forearm. He has no sense of
touch on those parts and have marginally better performance than
unmodded body parts.
Additionally he has a brain modification that automatically
activates in times of extreme stress- It changes his mental
state to cause him to undergo something called "Knockout Mode".
It disconnects him from his current state of consciousness and
replaces it with the natural survival instincts of a wild
animal. His posture remains the same, but he loses all feeling
of pain and remorse, as well as any concept of alliance, mercy
or long-term decision making. Needless to say he also loses the
ability to speak or even coherently think. Calming him down at
this point is a dangerous task.
Mod Drawback: When in strenuous use his prosthetic arm feels no
pain or exhaustion, but once in rest it releases all accumulated
stress, causing him to feel all the associated pain at once.
During this time his arm can't be used for much. If the pain
becomes too much his Knockout Mode may be unwillingly activated,
which can lead to disaster.
During Knockout Mode he's prone to attack allies and enemies
indiscriminately, as well as any civilian who comes close.
Because of this, he's never released on a mission alone. After
recovering, his thoughts may remain clouded for up to an hour.
