Modern Warfare 3: Spec Ops - First impressions
   DIR By: Toby937
       Date: September 17, 2011, 9:27 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Hi guys, as many of you know I was fortunate enough to get to
       GAMEfest on Friday.
I was even more fortunate to get to have a go on Modern Warfare
       3 Spec Ops.
So I thought I would give you guys an indication of what to
expect, whats good and well, whats bad.
Please keep in mind that the version I played is no doubt in the
BETA stage and not representative of the final product.
Being positioned infront of our chosen consoles (Xbox) by the
Activision staff, myself and Deadslay are faced with a menu
screen very similar to that of the private match map selection
screens of all the other CoD titles.
We have two maps to choose from. Paris and Dome.
Dome is the map featured in the Spec Ops reveal trailer, so we
       chose to play Paris.
We start off with the first wave of enemies, armed with a
pistol, flash bangs, and frag grenades. There are only four or
five of them, easily dispatched, especially considering there is
a permanent UAV up that highlights their positions.
The first wave is quickly over, Deadslay had already played
earlier so he took the lead. There is a short interval between
waves (30 seconds I think) that can be skipped ver if you are
ready to get back in the fight, Deadslay had earned enough
points to get an MP5, I dint have enough points, however I
found a Model 1887 shotgun dropped by an enemy which was nice,
so I didnt have to spend, the next few rounds went quickly, the
model 1887 was more than enough to take down any one in my path,
and by quickly running to the Armoury I could refill the ammo if
       the need arose.
The enemies gradually came in larger amounts and seemed to gain
intelligence, attacking in different directions and taking cover
       more rapidly than before.
Before long the explosives armoury had unlocked allowing us to
restock on grenades and we had both upgraded to an AK47.
Attck Dogs soon came to my dispair, but unlike the magical
leaping dogs of Treyarch fame, these dogs seemed slower and with
a bit of quick thinking could be easily dodged or avoided.
We kept moving around the map, forcing the enemies into a
'bottleneck' that we could then unleash grenades and rifle fire
to get rid of them quite easily.
Killing one enemy will grant you points, as will assisting with
a kill, but chain kills together either with blowing up cars or
multiple kills with grenades gains your a vast amount of points.
Soon the Air Support armoury had unlocked, and during an
interval Deadlsay bought the 'Delta Squad' support.
This deployed 4/5 extra troops to fight alongside us and I must
admit, they actually did stuff! Not the usual AI, shoot at a few
things and hide behind cover, there were a few occasions they
just ran off and dealt with the threat themselves. A couple died
heroically during one wave but the rest carried on to fight with
       us.
A juggernaut soon appeared but he was relatively easily
dispatched with a few claymores bought from the explosives
armoury and some accurate shooting to the head. Enemy
helicopters came in but again could be shot down with the AK47.
Dont get caught in the open by them though as they are a bit
relentless with their shooting and I nearly found out to my
       peril.
Attack dogs came around again soon enough, this time alongside
normal enemy troops, which caused a bit of upset as I got
distracted shooting at someone when one knocked me down. I
though that was me out and in need of a revive at first, but you
have a chance to click the Right stick in to stop the dog
ripping out your jugular. So with the reactions of a speeding
gazzelle I did just that, snapping poor pooches neck and keeping
me in the fight, bloodied and a bit disorientated, but still
       fighting.
Wave over again and I had more points by this time I knew what
to do with. Deadslay had already used a predator missile and we
still had a couple of pissed off Delta Squad members with us. So
For the sake of it, I ordered in a Riot shield squad. Simalar to
the delta squad some troops drop in from a helicopter wherever
you call them (there is a short delay as they fly in). Ammo
restocked we were ready to go all guns blazing and top the
leader board to win a T-Shirt, so the round starts
       AND THEN!!!!
Time was up, we made it to round 11 and our 15 minutes had come
       to an end.
Pissed off that we delayed so much at the start we walk out with
our head held high knowing, given more time, we would have made
       it like bosses.
So after reflecting on my short time with spec ops I will give
you some key points that you may like to know.
Difficulty Setting: Similar to spec ops on Mw2 you can adjust
the difficulty setting each time you play.
Visuals: Yes it looks like MW2, if not a bit more 'crisp'
       looking with better charachter animations.
Feel: It feels very familar, which is a good thing IMO, button
layouts and everything are the same, your HUD layout is the
same, and the feel of the weapons is very familiar. EXCEPT the
Model 1887, this actually feels like a beast now, its slow and
sluggish but will put a number of enemies down at once.
Pace: Starting off quite easy and slow, the pace picks up very
quickly and the panic moments can come quickly too.
Friendly Fire On: Yep you can hurt your team mate, Im not a fan
of this personally but I will concede that it adds more to a
very important gameplay mechanic which is....
Teamwork: When I first heard it was only for 2 players I was
gutted. I love four player co-op games and I honestly thought
they had missed a trick with it not being four players. However!
After some reflection I agree with the choice. Communication is
key to getting through this and its something you naturally
start doing. After only 2 or 3 round you could soon hear the
shouts of myself and deadslay telling each other where we were
going, where the enemy were etc etc. I think with four players
it would become unmanagable in the later rounds. As there would
be too much confusion, too much air support and simply too many
players on the maps for it to be coherent.
All in all then, I thought it was pretty cool. Its a nice
addition to the series and will probably get played by me quite
a bit. It would be interesting to see a bit of friendly
competition up and running between pairs of people to see how
far they can get on each map when it ships.
So there you go then, that was my MW3 experience, if anyone has
any questions then just drop it below and I'll see if I can
       answer it.
       Thanks for reading :)

Sounds like fun. I'm looking for something over and above new
maps and a few tweaks, and this sounds genuinely interesting! 8)

you mentioned Activision staff, is it true that they laughed and
waved money in your face that had been lining their pockets when
you asked if MW3 will have dedicated servers for MP?

Looking forward to this. Have to say Spec Ops on MW2 was the
       best part for me
