       What Happened To CoD Wars?
       By: Toby937 Date: August 9, 2011, 7:07 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Ive been getting this question a lot recently, and rightly so,
after a lot of hype and build up, it was cast asunder and
       forgotten about.
For this I would like to apologise to the Gamerdads Community.
I feel as though I owe you an explanation as to what happened
       and why.
Firstly, myself and jay3ff put a lot of hard work into setting
this up, ensuring things worked and that it would be a fair
       competition for all.
Using feedback from the community some things were altered so as
       to make it more accessible.
Unfortunately also around this time some things were happening
in my private life (some of you know about that) which required
a fair amount of attention from me, it also put me into a pretty
bad place which I have no intention of returning to any time
soon. Days turned to weeks and the time seemed to fly by.
During this time We started to receive a bit of doubt and
negativity about whether or not a competition such as this would
work, this coupled with my personal affairs put me into a bit of
       a 'cant be arsed' mode.
I tried to keep on top of it and asked all willing participants
to get back to us, some did, some didn't. But again, with what
was going on, I couldn't really find the energy to chase people
up. So I kind of just left it there. Everything was in place, we
just needed to set a time. But with people not being on the
forums/twitter it seemed difficult to get hold of those who
initially signed up. To much effort was required and I just
       didnt have it in me.
Don't get me wrong I'm not blaming anyone at all, its was my
responsibility to ensure it started, I'm just trying (badly :D)
       to explain why it didn't.
To be fair, it turned into a bigger beast than I first thought,
and in truth maybe did become a bit more complicated than it
should have. But hey, I tried!
So to all at Gamerdads, Im sorry for not keeping you in the loop
and getting it going. I will take it as lesson learned and move
       on.
However! The framework for it is still there, if people are
interested, maybe we could run a smaller tournament, less game
modes or teams. That decision I leave up to yourselves, but if
you fancy it then just drop a comment below :)
       Cheers
       Toby

some say hackers ruined the event before it started, others say
people were scared off when I said that fire spawns below people
       when they camp

...but to us the event is called The Stig.

If I may add my 2p worth. I have to say I was concerned from the
off with this not because of the concept but more the logistics.
If there is one thing I have learned over the years running
these type of things it's that they need to be simple and
accessible. Probably the most complicated thing we do on here is
the FIFA leagues. We give people a free reign to organise there
games between themselves within the week (like cod wars). Nooks
and nuts have enough trouble getting individuals to meet up let
       alone 2 whole teams.
If you wanted to run an event like this this is what I would do
and don't think I'm stepping in here or teaching you to suck
eggs but I did a similar thing on ps with BFBC2 when that came
out with some success but stil lots of problems.
Pick a night and time when people have to play. It could be at 9
on a Tuesday. Play 2 team league games then go onto the fun
night as normal but don't mix the 2. Make it 3 on 3 but have 4
man teams. Smaller teams are easier to manage and the 4th man as
reserve but rotate around so people like me who work shifts can
plan around when I'm on nights etc..
       Just a few suggestions ;)

I did voice my worries to Toby and Jay before they launched CoD
Wars but it kinda fell on deaf ears. As GD has said, its really
hard just getting two players to play a game of FIFA in 7 days,
let alone trying to get 10+ people to all be online at the same
time on the same day as the majority of us have full-time jobs
       and children.
For it to work i think the squads need to be smaller, probably 3
players in a team, a set time and night given for the matches
(like a set fixture list) A bit more flexibility with the
classes as it got a bit confusing and some players didn't have
some of the guns which were required to play.
As I said to Toby and Jay when i voiced my concerns, the concept
of it is very good, just a few things need tweaking to fit
around the fact that the majority of us are gamerdads.

Yep agreed. Make it one specific evening and time. People will
then know if they can do it. I would personnally allow people to
use there own set ups. That way you wont have the he used this
and that and it keeps things really simple. I know lots of
people dont like lots of set ups being used but its just a bit
       of fun, right?
The concept is brilliant. It would attract a large crowd and
probably lots of new members if done right. Just some food for
       thought

the night that me and toby talked about this with nuts and nooks
felt like we were being beaten with a negativity stick by the
know it all experienced modz ;) even now it seems so
patronising, "I told you so but you didn't listen" lol
for squads I would think that 4 would be the minimum needed for
decent games unless we had our own nuketown 24/7 playlist. as
said before (but it kinda fell on deaf ears, wink wink) one of us
would set up the game mode in a file share including all rules
and prescribed weapons, so everyone could use them regardless of
rank. GD you just want the M16 ;)
anyway, when it DID become clearer that it is hard to get a
number of people to go on at the same time I wasn't bothered by
the prospect of the idea not going ahead, although a number of
people were looking forward to it but pub stomping FTW. now
excuse me while I go sit in a darkened corner a ponder my life
woes after having my life force sapped away like something from
Super Metroid. hopefully a friendly super metroid will come and
rejuvenate me before mother brain attacks again (ah the SNES
       days)
