Mini review and Experiences with Tritton AX Pro & AX 180 hea
       dsets
By: headchopper Date: May 17, 2011, 7:57 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately my first pair of these Tritton AX Pro's from
Amazon were literally DOA, as the power adapter was faulty,
however Amazon as always, responded quickly and sent me an
advance replacement which worked just fine. (for a while, bad
batch I think, as Amazon later withdrew the product for a few
       days)
The headphones are quite large but comfortable, and likely can
be worn for long periods, however due to my quite large ears
which don't fully fit inside the earpads I did experience a
little discomfort after a couple of hours use. (Normal sized
       heads/ears should be fine...lol)
Sound quality is very good indeed. One can get true dolby 5.1
sound which really does make a difference in games, I'm
currently playing COD Black Ops and you really can tell where
       specific sounds are coming from.
Music files such as MP3 ect. are stereo, but can be enhanced if
one wishes by using the Pro-Logic options, one can also add
delay/effects between various speakers in the h/phones. DVD
Films or Blurays are played back in true dolby 5.1. Remember
Pro-Logic is a simulated virtual surround sound effect, the
genuine 5.1 dolby really comes into it's own within games, or
       when playing DVD films ect.
One observation I did make was that the first set of headphones
from Amazon had been sourced from a company called Mad-Catz, and
are made by Tritton in the USA. However, the second
replacement set had a label on stating they were made in China
under licence. Otherwise both units were almost exactly the
same, the manual was a little better on the Chinese made second
set, and the artwork on the rear of the boxes was different.
Note: However, I did notice one important difference in that the
set from Madcatz did seem to have a much more flexible cable and
IMO the headband seemed to have a little more give, so the
Madcatz version may be a touch more comfy, otherwise they
appeared identical, and the sound quality from both exactly the
       same to my ears.
A bit of useless info, Tritton themselves got into financial
difficulties, and were taken over by the Madcatz distributers,
though they still retain the name Tritton of course.
Only one power supply adapter is used, as they now use a
splitter near the end of the cable to give you the 2 required 9v
supplies, which is a little neater than earlier models which
       came with 2 power adapters.
12 feet of cable is supplied so no issues there, the only thing
I did'nt like was that IMO the rather nice inline volume control
unit was a little too close to the headphones, so it tended to
       hang down.
Personally I would have liked the cable between the headphones
and the volume controller to have been a little longer, so that
the volume control unit could have remained on my desk instead
of being pulled off all the time.
However some people may like it near at hand, for making
individual volume adjustments ect, but IME once it's set you
dont need to alter it too much, though it does have controls for
your microphone too, so some people may find the fact it's close
at hand to be an advantage, it also have a sliding clip fitted,
so it can be clipped to your coat/jumper ect.
As already mentioned, there are quite a few cables at the small
optical decoder box, but are just about tolerable, mines inside
a cabinet so out of the way, but there is a fair cluster of
cables which I suspect some people may object to.
The supplied optical cable looks rather cheap and thin, but it
does seem to work okay, though I have changed mine for a better
quality one which I already had. DON'T FORGET TO REMOVE THE
PROTECTIVE COVERS from the ends of the optical cable before
connecting, otherwise you'll get all sorts of hissing/crackling
noises or no sound at all.
Thought I'd mention that, as not everyone reads the manual, and
may not realise they are supplied with protective covers
especially as they look rather like clear LEDS, if they have not
seen a optical Toslink cable before...lol
The headphones also come with a spare set of ear pads, so you
can choose between a soft material type pad or a soft simulated
leather, the build quality is quite good, and should last for
many years use, but most people will be buying these to get that
superb true 5.1 dolby sound in games ect, and I must admit, in
that department they truly excel, and certainly make gaming and
       listening to DVD's more enjoyable.
The microphone works very well too.
Are they worth the money? personally I think they are a little
over priced, but if you want good quality True 5.1 Dolby Sounds
then these are likely the best headphones to achieve that. If
you don't like them you can always use Amazons excellent returns
policy, which unfortunaly I've had to use.
I've been using them now for almost 3 weeks, and they have
worked fine, sadly however, this second replacement set which
Amazon sent me, also went down today, and looks like the power
       unit had died again.
Ironically, it seems Amazon have currently suspended selling
them, so in my case I've requested a refund instead of
replacements, whether I buy another set later, I'm currently
undecided. My sons Trittons AX Pro's have worked fine since
day-1 without any problems at all, so it's obvious I've been
rather unlucky with mine, but if you do decide to buy make sure
you get the Madcatz version as the cables are far more flexible
and tend to look better. (less inclined to kink)
In conclusion, yes they are a little pricey, and IMO a little
over priced, but if you want to enhance your gaming experience,
sound wise, I doubt you will find a better headset, I just hope
       your's are more reliable.

Re: The Tritton AX 180 headset (Priced around £54)
By: headchopper Date: May 26, 2011, 8:01 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I bought the Tritton AX 180 headset from Argos after I returned
a second faulty set of AX Pro's back to Amazon, for some reason
the mains power unit went faulty on both, bad batch perhaps?.
So what did I think of the Tritton 180 headset, coming from the
Ax Pro's I instantly noticed the reduction in sound quality, the
difference is quite a lot, the sound on the 180's is more woolly
and less clear with noticably less mid and high range sounds.
The overall build quality is very good, and like the AX Pro's
there's plenty of cable length, the finish is in a durable black
finish with orange highlights which contrast well and looks
       quite nice.
Similar to the Pro's it also has a breakaway cable, but on the
180's it actually plugs into the end of the inline volume
control, which I thought was a little neater than the breakaway
din plug connector on the AX Pro version.
Also worth mentioning that the AX 180 only comes with the 1 set
of fitted simulated soft leather earpads, you don't get a second
alternative material spare set like you do with the AX Pro
       version.
Obviously the Ax 180 are just standard stereo h/phones, and
therefore does not have any extra control decoder box like the
Pro version, but that does mean slightly less cables to worry
about, it also does not need a separate power unit, as it is
       powered from your USB.
The microphone looks decent enough, nice and flexible, holding
it's position when you move it, so no issues there.
However, I did find it had 2 big negatives for me, and both are
noticable quite quickly, firstly one can hear quite clearly,
undesirable backbround white noise, and from what I read it
seems most headphone sets powered from the USB suffer from this
issue. It's quite audible and can still be heard if one listens
for it at normal volume levels too, but is easily heard at low
volume levels, this is something which I considered totally
       unacceptable.
The second big issue for me was the fact, unlike the AX Pro's
which are fairly comfortable, this headset clamps with quite a
lot of pressure on the sides of your head, and for those with
large heads I'm sure one would find them quite uncomfortable
after just a few minutes, it seems numerous people have also
commented on this issue on various review sites.
I personally don't like tight headsets and I certainly found
these 180's to be quite uncomfortable, though it may be less of
a problem for those with smaller heads..lol
And so... it was for those last 2 reasons, I also returned the
AX 180 headset back to Argos the next day.. I'm currently
managing with the official PS3 bluetooth headset for on-line
chat and standard stereo sound coming through my monitor, for
the time being if I want to wear h/phones it's a comfy pair of
       Sennheisers for me...lol

Nice review. I completely agree with your AX Pro review, spot on
in all respects, apart from the fact that mine are still
working. I used Turtle Beach's X41 wireless 5.1 headset before
and although they were good (and even more expensive than the AX
Pros), the sound quality is noticeably better in the AX Pros
with a whole new range of sounds coming through. :D
But those cables are a right PITA! :-\

Yes the cables are a bit of a pain, though I was able to tuck
mine away a little bit, on the Xbox don't you also have to plug
a cable into the volume control unit too ? think I recall a
       mention in the manual.
They are good, but a shame they are limited to toslink optical
connections only, though they also do a universal version of the
AX Pro which caters for all connection types albeit about £25
more I notice, and probably even more cables..lol
I used to also use mine on the PC using my soundblaster x-fi
optical output, mainly for listening to the odd PC game and
       MP3's etc.
One think worth mentioning BTW, was an issue on my PC I later
noticed after sending them back, I noticed that certain movie
clips on the BBC website and a few u-tube video's lacked any
sound or sounded incorrect, it was very strange because 50 or
       60% played okay.
It took me a while to suss, but it was something stupid as
always..lol after numerous versions of flash player installs,
the culprit, was the fact that I had switched the output from
the sound blaster speaker to 5.1, it just needed changing back
to normal stereo. Simple, but it took me ages to find it, as
many of the video's worked okay...lol something to note if
you ever switch PC output to 5.1 and you are listening just on a
2 speaker setup, and wondering why some video's have no sound.
I would'nt be surprised to find myself tempted again in the
future, but not bothering again at the moment.
