Thoughts on Kinnect? Will anyone be getting it?
By: moobit Date: November 25, 2010, 3:39 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi all.
Just wondered now that it is out and some of you will have be
able to actually play the thing now (it's set up in my local
Tesco for example!), what are your thoughts on Kinnect?
I'm still oohing and aahing about getting one-it was my 30th
last week so I have some "me" money...
I was split between this or a PS3 until Gemmell made a good
point in that I hardly manage to get onto the Xbox much
recently, so i'll have no time for two consoles, and if i want
it for Blu-rays, I might as well buy a Sony Blu-ray player for
£99 on play.com (he's right).
So my thoughts turned to Kinnect, as I think it would be great
to play with my toddler&even try to convince my wife to join in
with us (eg: My Daughter would LOVE Kinnectimals). Also-I like
the voice controls and ability to "flick" through menus and
command it to play a film for example-it's like a real life
Sci-Fi film! ;D
There are two flipsides to this however:
(1) The Price: Yes I have enough to buy it after my Birthday
(Thanks Family! :)), but it costs the same as a Wii or entry
level Xbox! Can I justify this to myself?
(2) Space-although it will (kinda) work close up (believe me-the
Eurogamer stand was NOT 6 foot away from the sensor bar-and it
wasn't like they didn't have the space! ...Eejits!), it works
best when you are standing more than 6 foot away from the sensor
(8 foot is two player!).
My sofa is 6 foot away from my main living room TV, so it's on a
knife edge in that room. The dining room where my PC, xbox and
other TV all are currently is arranged "lengthways" so you could
easily stand 7 foot away from the sensor if I moved the dining
room table to the side....except there would be a Gothy
chandelier hanging down at head hight inbetween me and the
TV/Sensor-so it may not pick me up in some situations! ::)
As I say... ooohing and ahhing... ???

Yeah, I feel your pain mate! I was in two minds about it too.
Like yourself I tried weighing up the advantages and
disadvantages and I think I've come to the decision that I'll
pass on this one.
My main reason being is that I can see the novelty wearing off
very very quickly. It'll be a great laugh around Christmas or
family get-togethers and the like, but when it comes down proper
gaming, I don't think it'll hold much sway for me. I own a Wii
console too and for the first couple of months it was a great
laugh playing it with the missus, but soon after, the charm wore
off and I was back to proper gaming, pad in hand. My bro
suggested we bring it to his for Christmas and again it was a
great laugh but it's been back in it's box ever since!
To sum up, for me, Kinect would seem to be the ideal holiday
periph. A few drinks, a laugh, but once it all dies down, i'll
be sat back on the sofa, pad in hand, and it'll be gathering
dust underneath my tv.
Hope you're not torn for too long mate!

My children are getting it for Xmas ..... will probably we
played more than the wii .... which has retired to my daughters
bedroom.
Waste of money , maybe .... but at xmas if its not Kinect it`ll
be wasted on something else . ;)

I had the choice between Kinnect and a new PS3 for my birthday.
But like Moobit I was concerned about the space needed to use it
properly.
Went for the PS3 in the end, the lure of Little Big Planet 2 and
GT5 was to great.

Well, you guys know I'm a ps3 guy, not a fanboy but still I'm
pretty happy with what it has to offer. I wanted a more hardcore
motion gaming experience and something that had games for me and
only me as well as for the kids. The wii did this for a while
but then got way more kid oriented to keep my attention. As for
xbox, two things came to mind that I couldn't justify: 1) no
controller just didn't feel right. I wanted to press something
and 2) lack of hardcore titles or even the possibility to ever
integrate the motion into existing popular titles was
disappointing. I went with the move and although it might feel
like wii at times, i think it offers a lot of versatility in
motion gaming. I never found the need to "talk at" ANY
electronic device so the nav control the kinect offered seemed
useless.
Just my two cents...

Some good points there guys! :)
Still torn tho-for me, if I don't buy kinect, I'll end up buying
a Midi guitar and Rock Band3 midi adapter (I am already a
guitarist-ish... See my YouTube Kodak Zi8 vid), or the new Rock
band 3 six string guitar controller (as played at Eurogamer-was
AWESOME!!).
Problem is... RB3 plastic guitar OR Kinect for near enough same
price??? Although I am dubious about the space needed to play
2player Kinect, I'd get a HELL of alot more "Tech" for my money
with Kinect!
Hence being torn! ;)

My daughter and me sorta had a go on one in Tescos as well
yesterday. I say sorta as after a couple of minutes and a small
crowd gathering we decided to get off as I realised we`d never
get it off the game menu screen unless someone showed us what to
do :-[

LOL-yeah I had that problem in Tesco too-you have to either wave
at it, or talk to it and it works...
Although in a crowded Tesco-probably not without embarracment!

I've got one for the kids which is hidden, even from me, until
xmas!!
I played it at Covent garden, there was a big warehouse where
you could walk-in, but didnt really get it (played Joyride!) but
the kids did love it.
Then weekend before last there was a boys toys event at Canary
Wharf, with Kinect on a 100in TV!! Again the kids loved it, they
play Kinect Adventure... which looked better than Joyride!!
So I think kids everywhere will love it, as for me fingers
crossed for COD Kinect or Leisure Suit Larry Kinectual
Encounters!!
