We have 20 years of experience, but some folks learn more or
less in 20 years than average. While it's necessary to have
established procedures for efficient action, it's also necessary
to avoid getting into ruts, so the status quo has to be
questioned constantly (almost). This is part of Responsibility,
which is the only means to Prosperity for all.

meaningful prosperity when abuse continues to be widespread [and

1. Lesson 1. RESPONSIBILITY
REQUIRED READING (I'm exaggerating)
Two books should be owned by everyone:
1. The 12 Steps and 12 Traditions, from AA [called the 12 & 12];
and
2. Parent Effectiveness Training, by Thomas Gordon [also called
P.E.T.].
Read especially Step 4 on Moral Inventory in the first and the
Chapter on Active Listening in the second.
RESPONSIBILITY
Responsibility is doing what needs to be done in order for
everyone to have a better life.
Each person's responsibility increases with experience. At birth
we have no responsibility at all.
As we learn to crawl and talk and walk, we're given much more
responsibility for moving ourselves around and for verbalizing
our needs and wants.
As we learn to do small tasks for ourselves, we're given those
responsibilities too.
And we're happy to do them, because they're part of growing up
and being like an adult.
EDUCATION (John Holt: Instead of Education)
How is it that after a few years in school, most of us begin to
dread the responsibilities of learning?
Is it because we're not ready for some of those "learning"
chores yet?
Are our studies too fast for us, or too slow?
Do we need more time Playing with what we've learned so far
already?
Are our more advanced learning Games [lessons] too complicated,
or senseless, or "boring?"
Has school become too confining? Do we lack freedom, excitement,
or affection?
It seems that only a few students enjoy school, but most of them
too seem frustrated often.
As we're hurried along thru the grades, do we become
"mind-numbed robots?"
Do we learn to take on new responsibilities when we're not
really ready?
If so, are we really being responsible, or just pretending?
Do we give up being really responsible for ourselves and learn
to let authorities, or others, or whims, or moods, make our
decisions for us?
PRISONERS (Holt)
War prisoners pretend to be dumb around their captors in order
to seem too incompetent to do tasks.
Acting dumb gives them some freedom from undesirable
responsibilities.
Dominant classes naturally come to believe their captives really
are dumb, as well as lazy and mischievous.
This is how dominant classes become racist or classist toward
captive peoples and regard them as inferior.
It's also how adults come to see some kids, when treated like
prisoners, as dumb, lazy and mischievous.
Kids and other captives, who are forced in this way to act
incompetent, in trying to get out of undesirable tasks, often
come to see themselves as truly inferior, or incompetent, as
well.
INSENSITIVITY (M. Scott Peck: People of the Lie)
Anyone experiencing misery for long periods becomes insensitive
to one's own and other people's suffering.
Lack of freedom, excitement, or affection for long periods
produces misery and probably insensitivity too.
For many kids, home or school probably seems like prison and
makes them miserable and insensitive.
Most adults who were raised similarly are then insensitive to
kids' and others' misery and even their own.
Insensitivity means lack of awareness, so abuse is done to
oneself and others unknowingly.
Abuse is any guardian's, or one's own, actions that harm a
person physically, mentally, or morally.
Neglect may be considered abuse if it results in similar harm.
Guardians are those in authority over someone, regardless of
age.
WHAT IS RESPONSIBILITY?
We're responsible for doing for ourselves what we can and for
taking care of ourselves.
We're responsible for doing for others what we can, that they
need but cannot do.
We're responsible for helping ourselves and others to become
more responsible [improvement].
We're responsible for not harming ourselves or others, as far as
possible.
We're responsible for taking on proper responsibilities as we
get ourselves sufficiently prepared.
We're responsible for being sensitive to our own feelings and
those of others.

2. Lesson 2. SENSITIVITY
WHAT GOOD IS SENSITIVITY?
Sensitivity tells us when something is right or wrong with
ourselves or others.
Sensitivity means sensing how we feel ourselves or how others
seem to feel.
If we had no feelings at all, emotional or physical, we'd all
soon let ourselves die.
There'd be no reason to avoid harming ourselves or others.
We wouldn't care, because it wouldn't hurt and we wouldn't care
if anyone died or left us.
Natural pain helps persuade us not to harm ourselves or our
loved ones.
Natural pleasure helps persuade us to improve ourselves and our
surroundings.
As was stated in Lesson 1, when long exposed to misery, people
become fairly insensitive.
We don't become completely insensitive usually, but fairly
insensitive.
Our conscious minds can only hold relatively small amounts of
experience.
Our subconscious can hold much more, so any repetitive
experience tends to become subconscious.
That is why repetitive or ongoing misery makes us insensitive to
the suffering of ourselves and others.
We can access much of our subconscious feelings, but it
generally requires guidance and much practice.
Moral inventory of the 12 Step program can help access the
subconscious.
This and similar practices can help restore our sensitivity to
better understand ourselves and others.
MALE & FEMALE CULTURE (Deborah Tannen)
It is said that male and female culture tend to differ quite a
lot, tho some members of each have traits of the other.
The male culture is said to have been occupied largely with
hunting in ancient times.
The female culture is said to have been involved with gathering
food or gardening and with home life.
Effective hunting required that males be quiet and stealthy and
suppress emotions so as not to scare prey off.
The home life of females benefited from talk and emotional
sensitivity.
The frequent talk of women helped to keep away predators and
pests.
Their emotional sensitivity helped women better care for the
kids and adults of the group.
Males learned to cooperate thru hierarchy and competition, with
the most experienced being dominant.
Females learned to cooperate thru sensitive talk and equality,
but with some subtle hierarchy based on experience.
Male hunting abilities seem to have led them to learn war
against other tribes, and to learn domination.
The traits of ancient times seem to remain largely in effect in
modern time, but are in great need of modification.
It is responsible for everyone now to learn emotional
sensitivity and try to understand each other's differences.
It is responsible for guardians to be sensitive to the conscious
and subconscious feelings of dependents.
Parent Effectiveness Training and Moral Inventory greatly help
to develop such sensitivity.
SENSITIVITY DIALOG (Thomas Gordon: Parent Effectiveness
Training)
Love would cure much of the world's suffering.
Love means respect and respect means being sensitive to others'
concerns and feelings.
This requires meaningful dialogue, but it doesn't mean solving
other's problems.
Respectful dialogue usually helps others start their own
solution process.
Acrtive listening is a simple way to show and build our own
sensitivity and practice respectful dialog.
It is used when someone expresses, verbally or nonverbally, a
negative emotion of fear, anger, sadness etc.
It involves paraphrasing what the concerned person expressed and
avoiding roadblocks to communication.
Active Listening helps build understanding.
Effective Sharing is similar, but expresses our own feelings to
others.
ROADBLOCKS TO COMMUNICATION (Thomas Gordon)
Roadblocks to communication with someone are roadblocks only
when that person has a problem.
When the person doesn't have a problem, the same kinds of
communication are less likely to be roadblocks.
Some of the Roadblocks are: criticising, blaming, name-calling,
questioning, reasoning, advising, commanding.
When a kid is frustrated because another kid won't play what he
or she wants, you can say by Active Listening:
-Are you sad [or "frustrated," if old enough to understand]
because X won't play your game?
-or: You seem sad because X doesn't want to play your game with
you.
The formula for this kind of effective dialog is: paraphrasing
The person's Feeling + What it's about.
This is called Active Listening and it can be in the form of a
question or a comment.
Active Listening as a question is different from the questioning
that becomes a Roadblock.
Questioning that doesn't follow the Active Listening formula is
a likely Roadblock.
That is if it doesn't ask the person's feeling or what it's
about.
Roadblock question examples would be: Why don't you find
something else to play?
-or: Do you want to hear a funny story? -or: Who died and made
you King?
Active Listening shows sensitivity, while Roadblocks show
insensitivity.
Most of the time it takes only one Active Listening response to
"solve" a kid's problem.
That's because their problem is mainly fear, which is due to
lack of affection.
And Active Listening shows sensitivity, which shows affection,
respect, love, or caring.
Much of the time adults aren't in the mood to be sensitive to
someone else.
We're in a hurry to get something done and don't want to be
interrupted.
Having grown up fairly insensitive, we don't appreciate the
value of sensitivity to others.
To be responsible as adults is to be sensitive to ourselves and
others, but it takes practice.
Adults [and kids] can have practice sessions pretending to have
problems and using Active Listening for them.
LOVE IS POWER. (Jean Liedloff: The Continuum Concept; &
Alcoholics Anonymous)
Emotional stress is fear; and Fear is a feeling and false belief
of insecurity, which is confusion.
Affection, or love, is security and shortage of affection is
insecurity, which is confusion.
The emotional or feeling part of fear is a warning that false
belief is present.
Stress, or fears, or false beliefs of insecurity, can be
relieved via moral inventory (12 Steps, Step 4).
Stress, fear and confusion are due to shortage of affection and
are overcome by sufficiency of affection.
This is the Power of Love.
This is why it's necessary to come to believe in a loving higher
power (Step 2).
Groups caring about individuals are expressions of such higher
power.
The love of an individual is insecure, because individuals are
mortal.
The love of a higher power is secure love, because higher power
is immortal.
A group is a higher power than is an individual. A family or a
class is a group too.
Loving Groups whose love survive thru generations are sources of
secure [immortal] affection.
HIGHER POWER [William James: The Varieties of Religious
Experience] [Step 2]
A Religion, charity, self-help group, caring organization [or
God] can be one's higher power.
By sensing such secure love we get a realistic sense of
security.
The sense of such higher power helps relieve stress, which helps
clear up confusion.
Remember, "higher power" doesn't have to mean "God;" it's each
person's choice.
Reducing confusion means clearer thinking, which make it easier
to recognize and correct false beliefs of insecurity.
All negative emotions involve false beliefs of insecurity, which
is fear.
Such false beliefs of insecurity cause us to condone wrongdoing.
Unselfish affection inspires us to correct our wrongs.
Fears tend to make us irresponsible. Affection tends to make us
more responsible.
Sadness or depression is a false belief of aloneness.
Higher power is always with us, so we are never alone.
Fear of our higher power is due to false impression of our
higher power [See LONELINESS in Lesson 3].
Religions sometimes call false beliefs darkness, while the truth
is called light.
Seeing false beliefs as false then is shining light into
darkness, so the darkness of false belief disappears.
This is what we can expect from doing Moral Inventory, described
in the 12 Step program.

3. Lesson 3. STRESS REDUCTION
STRESS, CO-DEPENDENCE & ABUSE
Stress, esp. emotional stress, is the number one cause of poor
efficiency in any group.
This is because stress often interferes with task-related
thinking, performance, physical and emotional health etc.
Effective stress reduction therefore increases efficiency,
productivity, morale and prosperity.
Unhealthy and ineffective responses to stress include abuse of
substances and abuse of power.
Power Abuse ranges from physical or emotional abuse to crime
[and war]
Power abuse is common among both Substance Abusers and
Co-Dependents.
Co-dependents are those who are psychologically dependent on or
submissive to abusers.
Co-dependents are estimated at over 90% of the population.
Signs of potential power abuse include traits of frequent
insults, criticisms, or anger, pride, grandiosity, selfishness,
jealousy, demands, threats, hatred, violence, chronic stress,
excessive drinking or drug use.
Signs of potential co-dependence are traits of submissiiveness,
tolerance of abuse, over-dependence on others, being
irresponsible while pretending to be super-responsible,
perfectionism, naivete', fearfulness, nervousness, worry,
phobias, substance abuse [which includes junk foods, esp.
carbohydrates], exhaustion, facade, shyness, unassertiveness,
self-disrespect, confusion, or dishonesty.
Most power abusers also have some degree of co-dependence.

The cause of stress is any subconscious false assumption or
insecurity about dangers, identity, or relationship
These assumptions usually begin in childhood, when we're very
naive.
If such false assumptions were not subconscious, they would be
easy to correct and the stress would end.
As was said in Lesson 2, continuous misery tends to go into the
subconscious, and so do the underlying assumptions.
Most people have traumas in early childhood, which cause these
false assumptions of insecurity.
Separation trauma in early childhood is just as serious to kids
as is major combat trauma to soldiers.
Such traumas tend to recur in later life, if similar events
recur, such as losing a loved one, esp. thru a breakup.
When people understand the repetitive nature of early trauma,
they're usually able to cope much better.
Early traumas often recur in adolescence as Schizophrenia, Major
Depression, or earlier as Autism.
The kinds of trauma that can lead to these conditions include:
physical or emotional problems of the mother during pregnancy,
birth problems, circumcision, separations due to sickness etc,
emotional separation due to parent's problems or diverting
attention to another sibling, problems worsened by sickness,
injury due to accidents or drugs or medical treatments, e.g.
vaccines containing mercury etc.
CO-DEPENDENCE & ABUSE PREVENTION
Preventing Power Abuse, Substance Abuse and Co-dependence
requires reducing stress [i.e. insecurity].
There are many stress reducing techniques, but only a few, at
most, deal effectively with the causes of stress.
This is the key to permanent stress reduction and increased
group and individual efficiency.
Subconscious false assumptions underlying stress can be made
conscious by asking questions.
Ask questions about your negative emotions, because these
emotions are created by stress.
The negative emotions include fear, worry, anger, loneliness,
boredom, shame etc.
Emotional feelings are like physical feelings: both are signals
that either harm or healing is occurring.
While physical pain or irritation signals harm is occurring to
the body, emotional pain or irritation signals harm occurring to
the mind.
Pain and irritation can also occur during healing, but it should
be diminishing over time.
Pain killers should be used very little, if at all, as they make
us unaware of harm that may be occurring.
Subconscious false assumptions cause mental harm and emotional
pain, much like harmful physical conditions cause bodily pain.
So subconscious false assumptions are harmful mental conditions.
Becoming aware of the falsehood behind emotional pain makes it
easier to find the truth, which is simply opposite of falsehood.
And the truth automatically restores mental well-being and sets
us free of emotional pain.
STRESS REDUCTION METHOD [from the 12 Steps]
A good way to proceed with stress reduction is with these short
steps.
1st, check for tense muscles in the body and relax them and
breathe more deeply.
[Step 4a] Stay alert to negative emotions or stress and
occasionally stop to think about it when it strikes, or sometime
during the day when there's time, and write briefly about the
following.
[4b] Name the primary negative emotion that comes with the
stress.
[4c] Ask what assumption, belief, or view is connected to this
emotion [Check under next section: General False Assumptions].
[4d] Ask what there is about this assumption that's likely to be
false.
[4e] Consider what is the opposite of the false assumption that
is probably true.
[Step 7] Ask your subconscious to let go of the false assumption
and remember the opposite truth.
[Step 10] Repeat the process as long as stress continues to
return.
The subconscious false assumptions should become clearer with
each practice of this procedure.
The following pointers may help you recognize your false
assumptions.
GENERAL FALSE ASSUMPTIONS [with Step 4]
The several classes of negative emotions involve general false
assumptions that are typical of most people.
Reading this below can help clarify subconscious assumptions
involved in your stress.
The classes of negative emotions most common to stress are fear,
anger, loneliness, boredom, shame and guilt.
Sometimes more than one of these emotions are involved.
FEAR - is the primary negative emotion, as it is usually
involved in other negative emotions as well.
It includes worry, nervousness, fright, confusion etc, in other
word, Insecurity.
The main assumption we make when we have fear is that something
may cause us unbearable harm or pain, which would result in
disaster.
What's wrong with this assumption? 1] Nothing is truly
unbearable; 2] all pain can be relieved or prevented.
The main reason we think pain can be unbearable is that we have
felt alone and unloved.
This will be covered further under "Loneliness."
We can find safe ways to face the false assumptions behind our
fears to see that they are false.
The opposite of the assumption that pain can be unbearable or
unpreventable is the fact that all pain is bearable and or
preventable.
Note to subconscious, "Pain is not unbearable or unavoidable, so
take away my exaggerated fear.
Help me learn to prevent the harm or pain I fear. Let me be at
peace.
Start by relaxing all of my unduly tense muscles. Let me get
whatever help I need."
Since feeling loved reduces pain appreciably, we can seek to
feel loved by God, or a higher power, or by associating with
loving people.
ANGER - includes feelings of hatred, resentment, frustration,
irritation, annoyance, impatience, revenge, jealousy, bitterness
etc.
The general assumption with anger seems to be that we've been
cheated and that we deserve or need to get even.
The fear behind anger is that we will experience unbearable harm
or pain, if we don't get even, or right a supposed wrong.
The false aspects of anger assumptions are, either that we've
truly been wronged, or that we need to right the wrong in a way
that hurts someone else.
The truth, which is the opposite, is usually that we aren't
really so easily wronged, or that we need not hurt someone in
order to right a wrong.
Note to subconscious, "Let me not readily feel wronged over
trifles and let me not think a wrong can be righted by hurting
someone.
Let me find healthy ways to right wrongs."
LONELINESS - includes sadness, depression, despair, aloofness,
blues, blahs etc.
The assumption behind loneliness is that we are alone or
separated from loved ones.
The opposite of this is that we are never alone. God or good and
or loved ones are always with us.
The fear is that getting too close to God or love will cause
unbearable pain or discomfort.
If we believe in God or good, we may fear that, if we get too
close, God won't let us have any fun or relaxation.
The opposite of this is that our "higher power" wants us to have
fun and peace so we can better share love with others.
HP wants to be our best friend and to give us the best advice we
can get, not to be our dictator or prison warden or slave
driver.
Note to subconscious, "Let me know that I'm never alone, that
love is always with me and always ready to provide comfort and
friendly, wise, helpful advice."
BOREDOM - which may go as far as sadness, depression, and or
despair, has the assumption that we are in need of excitement.
The fear is often that nothing may be truly exciting, or that
nothing is meaningful.
What is usually false in such assumptions is either, that we
really need so much excitement [it can easily be a crutch to
avoid other subconscious fears], or that a physical feeling like
boredom may become permanent and unbearable.
The opposite of this, which is often the truth, is that anything
can be exciting, or everything can have meaning.
This feeling of boredom is often a result of poor eating habits
which don't provide good nutrition, due to too much junk food,
or drugs, or abusing substances, or not enough pure water.
Meaning in life can be hard to detect if our brains are in a fog
from bad habits.
Also, meaning can often be found by doing more for others and
dwelling less on our own obsessions.
SHAME - includes feeling ashamed, embarrassed, degraded,
violated, shy, guilty etc.
The main assumption in shame etc seems to be that we appear to
others to be unacceptable in some way
And our reaction is to try to escape as quickly as possible.
The fear is often that we will be reduced in status and be less
appreciated or loved by others.
Anger often accompanies shame, especially when we feel degraded.
The false aspect of these assumptions is that we are
unacceptable.
The opposite, which is the truth, is that we are always
acceptable, even if our bodies are unattractive or we have a
moral debt that we need to pay.
GUILT - is one negative feeling that can stem from either false
assumptions or from truth.
False guilt is based on any false assumption, which claims that
we are guilty of something, when we're not really guilty of
that. Someone has wrongly persuaded us of our false guilt.
Instead of being guilty of that thing, we're guilty only of
having false guilt.
But we need to be careful about guilt, because real guilt tells
us we're guilty of something that we really are guilty of.
And when we find we're truly guilty of some wrong, we need to
make every effort to right that wrong as soon as we are
emotionally healthy enough to do so.
If we have fear about making amends for wrongs done to anyone,
we need to address that fear before we can carry on with
effective amends.
Many of us find that the one we've wronged the most is ourselves
and the way to make amends to ourselves is mainly by letting go
of our subconscious false assumptions.
REGRESSION
Regression is reverting back to emotional false assumptions.
Does every vocation and every group and institution need the 12
Steps to prevent people's regression?
They probably need the basic elements of the 12 Steps,
especially moral self-exam and amends.
Self-exam and amends are as important for entire groups as for
individual members of groups, according to Peck.
Groups also probably need problem-solving or conflict resolution
dialog with all groups with whom they have any social
relationship, in order to prevent power abuse.
One of the best methods of problem solving seems to be the
P.E.T. Type 3 method.
Consensus decision making also seems to be important, because it
prevents majorities from dominating or abusing minorities.

4. Lesson 4. SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION
POSITIVE VS. NEGATIVE PEER PRESSURE
Lesson 3 on Stress Reduction and the 12 Step program will help
end or prevent Substance Abuse.
But it helps as well to have countermeasures against negative
Peer Pressure.
Intervention and Positive peer pressure seem to be among the
best such countermeasures.
Positive peer pressure includes 12 Sterp groups and CodaPlus
groups etc.
The FUN PROJECT is an experimental effort to provide positive
peer pressure in other settings.
Everyone in the public eye is a potential role model for young
people.
Society and groups need to discourage negative role models and
reward or encourage positive ones.
Groups need to develop leaders to be positive role models [See
LEADERSHIP in Lesson 10].
With mass education, popular peers increasingly have become role
models.
And the role models for these popular students are increasingly
media celebrities.
Schools and parents can and should have positive influence on
popular students.
Teachers may request that these students become co-Founders of
CodaPlus groups to learn responsible leadership.
These groups should have adult supervision, like AlaTeen groups
have by Al-anon members.
The meetings should include guest speakers from AlaTeen,
Al-anon, Coda, AA, NA and like groups.
CAUSES OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE
What is Substance Abuse?
It is taking an amount of a substance that does harm,
physically, mentally, or morally.
Moral harm is deceptive thinking that causes one to be less
responsible.
Many substances can cause such physical, mental, or moral harm,
even some foods, especially processed carbohydrates.
Addictive substances are those which give a deluded sense of
pleasure, or high, or which numb pain.
Common early childhood traumas tend to predispose many or most
people to substance abuse, esp. if either parent was a substance
abuser.
Lack of sufficient freedom, excitement, or affection causes the
pain for which addictive substances are abused.
Providing proper freedom, excitement and affection helps much to
prevent or end substance abuse.
For addicts it's usually necessary to have a change of
environment, as in a treatment center, for some months.
CodaPlus, 12 Step groups, P.E.T. and the FUN PROJECT can greatly
help fulfill the above needs.

5. Lesson 5. CODA, OR CO-DEPENDENTS ANONYMOUS
WHAT IS CO-DEPENDENCE?
Co-dependence is an emotional disorder or "disease" stemming
from the addictive process.
The addictive process is an emotional disorder involving
compulsion to relieve stress or insecurity by harmful means.
Harmful means of relieving stress are substance abuse, power
abuse and co-dependence, which is self-abuse.
Co-dependence and the addictive process stem from unfulfilled
social and emotional needs.
These needs include especially freedom, excitement, affection,
and cooperation
Shortage of any of these produce stress and insecurity.
Addictive substances tend to produce a false sense of fulfilling
the above needs.
Co-dependence produces a similar false sense of fulfillment, but
without addictive substances.
The illusion of fulfillment appears to be produced partly by
chemical reactions in the brain.
There is no substance abuse or delusion that can really fulfill
the above emotional needs.
Only emotional health and healthy relationships can fulfill
those needs, as via the 12 Steps.
CHARACTERISTICS
Following are many of the characteristics of co-dependence.
[Schaef: Co-dependence, p. 42ff]
-dishonesty about or denial of one's emotional problems,
-projecting one's faults onto others,
-frozen or distorted feelings due to fear of certain feelings,
-holding on to feelings, like anger, resentment, instead of
getting over them,
-being controlling of others,
-confused thinking due to fears,
-obsessive thinking out of desperation for control,
-selfish, naive and immature thinking due to insecurity,
-perfectionism, negativism, judgmentalism, or grandiosity as
means to control,
-identifying with other/s due to self-hate
-deceiving others to control their impressions of oneself,
-overdependency on others for security or self-confidence,
-rigidity or stasis due to fear,
-Depression or immorality out of hopelessness,
-caretaking others to feel needed,
-getting sick to get sympathy,
-gullibility due to lack of self-confidence.
Behaviors that trigger or perpetuate co-dependence include:
=dishonesty,
=gossip,
=obsession,
=urge to control,
=interpreting others,
=self-neglect,
=comparing self or loved ones to others,
=blaming others,
=not taking responsibility,
=jealousy,
=binary thinking.
=focusing only on the addict's disorder,
=consulting co-dependent "professionals,"
=wanting to solve others' problems, instead of one's own.
RECOVERY FROM CO-DEPENDENCE
Checking the above characteristics of co-dependence can help in
the recovery process. [Step 1]
The 12 Step program should be followed, preferably with support
of a 12 Step group.
Al-anon is more numerous than CODA, and is generally just about
as good for any co-dependents.
If you start or join a CodaPlus group, this can help with the 12
Steps too.
Each CodaPlus group should maintain contacts with numerous
nearby 12 Step groups.
A list of these contacts should be made available to all members
of the group.
The 12 Steps involve having a caring higher power, taking moral
self-exam, making amends for wrong-doing, praying, and telling
others about the program.
The higher power can be anything that feels caring and potent,
even if it's a "higher self," etc.
What the 12 Steps do is increase moral maturity or wisdom, which
is self-improvement.

6. Lesson 6. ENDING POWER ABUSE, CLASSISM & RACISM
DOMINATION & CLASSISM
As explained earlier, prisoners find they must act dumb around
captors in order to get some freedom.
Dominant classes naturally tend to think their subordinates
really are dumb, lazy and mischievous.
They don't realize that captivity or domination itself forces
subordinates to act this way.
Teachers and leaders don't realize most kids' "dumbness" is an
escape mechanism from lack of freedom etc.
Most dominant classes become racist or classist toward
subordinates, regarding them as inferior.
Those in power come to regard themselves as responsible and
superior and they develop false pride.
Pride blinds us to our own flaws, increasing our insensitivity
to others.
Insensitivity makes it likely that those in power will abuse
others.
Insensitivity is irresponsibility and domination is coercion,
which is power abuse.
It is irresponsible to show disrespect toward, and unnecessarily
limit the freedom of subordinates.
Such mistreatment makes subordinates act and feel irresponsible.
It is irresponsible and immature for those in power to demand
respect from subordinates.
Authorities must first have and show respect for subordinates in
order to get and teach respect.
Having respect means treating others as equals, not inferiors.
Dominant classes, those most "successful" and privileged, become
the most proud and insensitive.
IGNORANCE AS INSENSITIVITY
Dominant classes are the most prone to being classist, racist
and abusive, but usually unknowingly.
"Big Business" is the world's most dominant class. It owns and
controls much of the media.
This dominant class has the most influence on government
policies, like the IMF [Int'l Monetary Fund].
IMF austerity programs abuse poor nations by putting bankers'
interests ahead of those of the common people.
They place more importance on people paying bankers huge
interest rates on loans than on people's survival.
Free Trade, Privatization and De-Regulation of public services
similarly abuse the common people.
Such policies of the dominant class are thus responsible for
much of the world's suffering.
The dominant class's major media obscure these abuses, by
rationalizing or by silence.
In the U.S. our media help make us ignorant of most of the
suffering in the world.
We become insensitive to others' suffering through ignorance or
denial.
When we are ignorant or unaware of someone's suffering, we can't
be sensitive to it.
Ending Power abuse requires reducing ignorance and insensitivity
and doing Intervention.
Intervention includes recommending Group Inventory to other
groups.
Interveners should practice Group Inventory before recommending
it to others.

7. Lesson 7. GROUP INVENTORY
REGAINING SENSITIVITY
Groups do great evil due to insensitivity. Groups which are
successful usually develop false pride.
As was said earlier, Pride blinds us to our own flaws and makes
us insensitive to others.
Failing groups also try to rally members with false pride.
They blame outsiders for the group's failings in order to build
group loyalty.
Many or most groups abuse people unintentionally, but the
effects are just as harmful.
National or group pride has led to the fall of nations and even
civilizations via wars, greed and laziness.
No group is immune to the dangers of false pride.
Overcoming class pride, or group pride, insensitivity and power
abuse requires Intervention.
Intervention is any communication that helps insensitive groups
become aware of their own dangerous flaws.
Insensitive communication with insensitive groups is ineffective
and is not interventive.
Sensitivity training or experience is necessary in order to
learn sensitive intervention communication.
INVENTORY
The 12 Steps teach individuals to do periodic moral
self-examination, called moral inventory.
12 Step Organizations also encourage their groups to do similar
group self-examination, or inventory
To do inventory is to estimate the good and bad effects the
group has on members and outsiders.
Groups do periodic group inventory in order to correct fatal
flaws and retain sensitivity.
Inventory is followed by making amends, when appropriate.
The 12 Step program of groups like Alcoholics Anonymous explain
inventory and amends well.
This process helps to relieve stress, prevent substance or power
abuse and improve relationships.
Power abuses by dominant classes threaten the world's freedom
and prosperity.
People and groups can cooperate to draft and elect
conscientious, knowledgeable politicians to end power abuses.
We can also provide dominant groups with Intervention
literature, or other communication.

8. Lesson 8. PROSPERITY VIA ACTIVISM
WHAT IS PROSPERITY?
Prosperity means everyone having an abundance of things needed
to fulfill everyone's needs.
Basic needs include freedom, excitement, affection, cooperation
and physical survival needs.
Sensitive Political Action is necessary to provide sufficiency
of freedom and physical needs.
This political action focuses on providing for the general
welfare of all the people.
It promotes education that fills needs for freedom, excitement,
affection, cooperation and truth.
It promotes science that does objective research for truth, free
of manipulation by special interests.
It promotes media that are sensitive, objective, honest and
fair, unmanipulated by special interests.
It promotes Intervention for all groups to increase sensitivity
and responsibility.
COOPERATION
Sensitive cooperation is the most effective means of achieving
Prosperity.
Effective cooperation involves establishing or joining groups
and promoting responsibility.
See prior Lessons for details on responsibility.
Cooperation should include making decisions by consensus, rather
than majority rule.
Group rules should include starting and ending meetings at
pre-specified times.
They should ask all members to speak only when designated by the
leader or facilitator.
A timer should be used to limit each person's speaking to a
pre-specified number of minutes.
The position of group leader or facilitator should rotate among
experienced members.
It's often best for the group to divide into committees on
desired subjects.
After each committee decides on proposals, the group should then
vote on each proposal.
The proposal may be modified or made temporary to help reach
consensus.
Objectors should be asked if they would agree to give a proposal
a try despite doubts.
Active Listening and other P.E.T. methods should be used to
improve everyone's sensitivity.
All members should be encouraged to learn the 12 Steps and
P.E.T. and join a CodaPlus group.
Groups should do Group Inventory once a month, or every 2, 3, or
4 months. See Lesson 7.

9. Lesson 9. DIALOG FOR KNOWLEDGE SHARING
RESPONSIBILITY TO SHARE
It is Irresponsible to remain ignorant of basic matters on any
important subject.
It is Irresponsible to be insensitive to anyone who seeks to
communicate, except in emergencies.
In becoming more responsible, we must seek the best media for
truth and knowledge.
We must also seek to advance truth and knowledge thru our
associations.
Truth importantly includes facts about people's suffering
anywhere on earth.
It also includes sensitive discussion of how best to remedy such
suffering most effectively.
Every group should attempt to advance such truth and other
knowledge effectively.
This means group members share truth and knowledge with each
other.
It means groups also share truth and knowledge with other
groups.
Knowledge includes science, history, economics, law, language,
arts, personal experience etc.
The best knowledge to share is that which has the greatest
potential to help the common good.
When groups meet, all members should be given about 5 minutes to
share truth or knowledge.
If time is too limited, just one or a few members may be chosen
to share at each meeting.
Different members should be chosen for each meeting, so all get
a chance to share.
An alternative is for members to print out what they want to
share and give other members copies.
Everyone should be free to decide themselves what seems to be
truth and knowledge.
Everyone should also be encouraged to comment sensitively pro or
con on what is shared by others.
ALTERNATIVE MEDIA
Do good media exist that disseminate important truth and
knowledge?
Most media cover some such matters, but most also slant much of
their coverage for special interests.
The most important subjects may be Politics, History, Science,
Health and Education.
Most media on all these subjects are slanted and considerably
dishonest, due to pride and insensitivity.
Science, education, health science and history are very
distorted due to special interests.
Our nation [and probably all nations] is like an addict, i.e.
like a person addicted to power and substances.
That describes much of the dominant class of any society.
The lower classes of a society are like the addict's family
members.
The addict is insensitive and denies doing anything wrong.
The family members are co-dependent and try to cover up for the
addict to appear normal.
Sometimes a co-dependent family member will rebel, which upsets
the other co-dependents.
Most rebels tend to become addicts or power abusers themselves.
Can you see how various groups in society behave like addicts,
co-dependents, or rebels?
Since truth and knowledge are so distorted, much work needs to
be done to make it right.
Will you help us do that and help bring humanity prosperity in
the process?

10. Lesson 10. MORE RESPONSIBILITY
NATURAL DEVELOPMENT
For kids it's responsible to have few responsibilities, but for
adults it's responsible to have many, if properly developed.
Most of us adults did not have properly developed
responsibilities, so we remain largely irresponsible.
P.E.T. and the 12 Steps are the best ways I know of to develop
responsibilities properly.
Such responsibilities are fun again the way they were in our
early childhoods, when we liked being more capable..
When we're not having much fun, we should take inventory,
because something is wrong with us.
It may be that we're taking on more responsibilities than we are
yet able to handle.
Many of the kinds of responsibilities we try to take on are
things we should not really be doing at all.
Perfectionism, false guilt and senseless traditions often cause
us to accept such responsibilities unwisely.
In our inventories we need occasionally to review our
responsibilities and discard the unwise ones.
LEADERSHIP [M. Scott Peck: People of the Lie]
The most responsible people are leaders and not followers.
Many leaders are immature, but they have the confidence, courage
and discipline to think for themselves and to lead.
The most responsible leaders effectively encourage their
followers to become leaders.
They encourage followers to develop confidence, courage and
discipline for independent thinking and leading.
This is proper leading, which promotes sharing leadership among
all members of the group.
This is promoting equality, cooperation, mutual respect,
consensus decision making and group inventory.
WHAT IS DISCIPLINE?
Discipline is ordered routine that produces effective and
efficient action.
The 12 Steps and P.E.T. are among the best disciplines for
developing responsible people.
Other important disciplines include nutrition, exercise,
tidiness and reading for knowledge [See KNOWLEDGE SHARING].
Is discipline supposed to be fun, since it's another
responsibility?
I would say YES on the basis that fun is anything that feels
rewarding.
So how can these disciplines come to feel rewarding?
Doing things in groups is often more rewarding than doing them
alone.
So it's likely to be helpful to brainstorm with others to find
ways to do some disciplines together in fun ways.
CARRYING THE MESSAGE TO OTHERS
The last of the 12 Steps is practicing recovery and carrying the
message of recovery to others who still suffer.
Recovery in this case means regaining emotional health, which
allows one to become more responsible.
Each person who begins to become responsible is responsible for
carrying the message of recovery to others.
All are free to do this however seems best, but cooperatively is
usually better than individually.
Physical, psychological and emotional problems heal quicker when
we're more loving toward others. [McKenzie]
Helping others and encouraging them to help yet others is an
important way to love they neighbor and heal thyself.
No matter how serious our ailments are, we need to help others
in order to help ourselves best.
Fear of ill-health is counterproductive and must be countered
with love and faith in the healing process.
Negative emotions must be released, as by moral inventory, and
positive ones must replace them to promote healing.
Is this enough responsibility you've gotten us into? Are we
having fun yet?

11. LESSON 11.
- IS THE ADDICTIVE SYSTEM SIMPLY FEAR? DOES IT SPELL DOOM FOR
SOCIETY?
BASIC HUMAN EMOTIONAL NEEDS
Why do kids in Western culture cry, fight and misbehave? Are
these portents of doom for society?
Some people point to declining morality, increasing promiscuity
and such, as signs of coming doom.
But the facts that kids cry, fight and misbehave are seldom
thought of as similar signs.
Jean Liedloff did not consider them signs of doom, but did see
them as signs of a sick society.
This view was forced onto her by circumstances in her travels
some 30 years ago.
She came to live for a time in a jungle village with Native
Americans in South America.
It impressed and amazed her to find that the kids there
practically never cried, fought, or misbehaved.
This seemed so odd to her, that she said it seemed like living
among aliens from another world.
She couldn't help but wonder if this might be how kids are when
they're raised naturally.
The villagers shared in the care taking of each others' kids.
The youngest, especially those under 8 months old, were held
constantly, usually by those who were active.
This fact led Jean to suspect that all kids may need this kind
of constant human touch and frequent activity.
To these people there was little or no difference between work
and play. All was like play.
In 1975 she wrote a book about the experience and her thoughts,
called The Continuum Concept.
In this village, kids experienced abundance of affection,
excitement, freedom and cooperation.
I believe these, along with knowledge and physical needs, are
basic needs for healthy societies.
12 Step groups, P.E.T. et al are very helpful at providing these
needs.
THE TRAGEDY OF COMMON CHILDHOOD TRAUMAS
Dr. Clancey McKenzie [
HTML http://www.drmckenzie.com
] did and studied
extensive research in the 90s and before, which very much tended
to confirm much of Liedloff's "continuum concept" ideas.
He found that kids under age 2, who are separated from their
primary caregivers for some hours or days, tend to experience
their separations or aloneness as traumatic.
He found that the brain function patterns in these kids are
quite like those of soldiers who experience major trauma in
combat, which resurfaces later in flashbacks called PTSD, i.e.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Similar flashbacks of early childhood traumas occur when kids
enter adolescence or early adulthood.
When traumas occur before age 2, the flashbacks in later life
are called Schizophrenia.
If traumas occur between about ages 2 and 3, the flashbacks
involve symptoms of Major Depression.
If traumas are less severe, or occur later in childhood,
flashbacks seem to involve Co-dependence.
McKenzie's research shows that aloneness is just as traumatic
for young kids as is combat for adults.
In both cases the person fears that their life may be actually
about to end.
Human young are very dependent on elders for survival, so
aloneness naturally means grave danger to them.
Traumas become subconscious and form the basis of many fears and
unhappiness in later life.
Kids who are not subjected to the trauma of frequent aloneness
and similar misfortunes grow up happy.
Many co-dependents and addicts using the 12 Steps uncover their
childhood traumas and begin to heal.
CO-DEPENDENCE IS FEAR
Probably unlike Jean Liedloff, I do consider kids' unhappiness
as a potential for society's downfall.
That's because a society that doesn't know how or want to raise
happy kids to become happy adults is one which is likely to
produce many mean and power-mad adults who will find happiness
by destruction.
A co-dependent society is unhealthy and if it does not get into
recovery the disorder can prove fatal.
The disorder of co-dependence is basically one of trauma-based
fear.
All negative emotions are based on fear, even anger, which is
fear of getting less than one deserves.
Fear causes anger, confusion, despair, recklessness, not caring
about others, and these can spell disaster.
To get a better sense that co-dependence really is fear, ask
yourself if it makes sense that all of these characteristics of
co-dependence [See Schaef's Co=dependence] could be produced by
fear.
Fear [of harm] leads to dishonesty or denial about emotional or
relationship problems in oneself or significant others?
Fear [of feelings] leads to frozen, or distorted, feelings, or
confused thinking?
Fear [of responsibility] leads to selfish, naive, or immature
thinking, or gullibility?
Fear [of change] leads to rigidity, stasis, or holding on to
negative emotions?
Fear [of death] leads to hopelessness, depression, carelessness,
or immorality?
Fear [of worthlessness] leads to self-hate to identifying with
others, living vicariously, or idolizing others?
Fear [of worthlessness] leads to self-doubt to overcaretaking
others, or to putting on a facade to hide behind?
Fear [of abandonment] leads to sympathy seeking by pretended
ailments, or making oneself sick etc?
Fear [of responsibility] leads to over dependence on others?
Fear [of powerlessness] leads to seeking control by obsessive
thinking, grandiosity, perfectionism, negativity, judgmentalism,
blaming, projecting one's faults onto others?
Fear [of pain] leads to eating disorders, or overmedicating?
It can then be asked also if fear leads to the characteristics
of Power Abuse.

12. Lesson 12 - POWER ABUSE - DOES IT SPELL SOCIETY'S DOOM?
HOW WE CO-DEPENDENTS ENDANGER SOCIETY
We co-dependents destroy relationships, institutions and people
unwittingly.
Civilization may be on the brink of self-destruction by war and
devastating economic depression.
We co-dependents are primarily to blame for these trends, which
may climax soon.
I'll explain how we seem to do this first, then how we can stop
doing it and hopefully keep society intact.
We destroy in all of the following ways, collectively, not
individually.
We must face these facts if we are to change them and heal
ourselves and society.
First, we consistently deny that problems exist in ourselves and
others, because we repress our feelings.
-Can problems be corrected if we deny or fail to see they exist?
2nd, our thinking is confused, selfish, naive, immature and
gullible.
-Isn't this a welcome matt for corruption, scams, frauds and
other parasitic power abuse?
3rd, we wish to avoid change; we're rigid, static; we cling to
our negative emotions.
4th, we succumb to hopelessness, negativism, carelessness and
immorality.
Immorality is action or inaction that does harm to others.
-Can we end corruption and power abuse if we rigidly avoid
change, or give in to hopelessness about it?
5th, we pretend to be unwell and we make ourselves sick to get
sympathy or advantage.
-Isn't this selfish advantage seeking a basis of corruption?
6th, we doubt or hate ourselves, living through others and
putting on false fronts to hide our "real" selves.
-Can anyone trust us, if we're dishonest, deceptive, or
self-hating?
7th, we waste ourselves in obsession, grandiosity,
perfectionism, negativity and judgmentalism.
-If no one behaves realistically, conscientiously, or
responsibly, can we expect society to survive?
8th, we harm or waste ourselves with eating disorders,
overmedicating, risk-taking, gambling, overspending.
How much self-ruinous behavior can exist in society without
destroying society?
9th, in the ways listed above, we accept corruption, abuses and
self-destructiveness in society.
In The Seriousness of the Addictive Process below, I show that
40% of adults are likely severely irresponsible.
Can a society of corrupt, abusive, self-destructive and greatly
irresponsible people survive?
HOW PEOPLE BECOME POWER ABUSERS
Anyone who has power is a potential power abuser, i.e. one who
uses power to harm or deprive others.
The greater the power one has, the easier it is to abuse power
and the harder it is to be stopped.
The easier it is to abuse one's power, the likelier a person is
to do so.
Those who have little power cannot well imagine how easy it is
for the powerful to abuse power.
Those who have less power are called dependents or subordinates.
Those who seek to share power responsibly with dependents and
subordinates are called authorities.
Those who seek to hoard power and prevent others from sharing it
are called authoritarians or dominators.
Subordinates are obliged to act inferior around dominators to
avoid confrontations.
Dominators, due to pride, willingly believe that subordinates
are inferior and don't deserve to share power.
When we see others as inferior, we automatically see ourselves
as better than they, which inflates our egos.
Dominators are thus proud to be dominant and dominance gives
them a sense of greater self-esteem.
This false pride is fertile ground for racism, fascism,
authoritarianism, oligarchy and much power abuse.
Healthy relationships with others depend on each being sensitive
to the feelings and concerns of the other.
Dominators fear sensitivity, because it seems to undermine
pride, self-image, self-esteem, or power.
They fear that sensitivity would make them weak or vulnerable to
domination by others.
THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE ADDICTIVE PROCESS
Power abuse is every culture's greatest danger from its own
power structure and from outside powers.
Power abuse is the most tangibly dangerous of the 3 Addictive
Process disorders.
Co-dependence is the most insidious disorder of the 3, which
supports power abuse by denial, dependence, etc.
Addictions are among the more visible symptoms of the societal
disorder, called the Addictive Process.
Substance abuse is most common among power abusers, as it helps
numb fears and guilt.
Most nations are in serious danger from these three disorders of
the Addictive Process.
Fear, greed, jealousy, anger and hatred, especially racism and
classism, are the worst power abuses.
To grasp the harm these disorders inflict on society, think
first of the millions of substance abusers.
There are over 20 million known alcoholics in the U.S. and many
more alcohol abusers.
There are several million other substance abusers, and many more
abusers of medical substances.
More than any are those with eating disorders. These addictions
reduce physical and mental health in the U.S.
Co-dependents number the most of all and they suffer from
varying forms and degrees of fear.
Power abusers probably include over 50% of adults, serious
abusers maybe 10%.
Co-dependents include over 90% of adults, of which 30% are
probably severe.
Substances abusers, not counting eating disorders, include about
20%, with 10% or more being severe.
Eating disorders, common among co-dependents, amount to about
80%, with about 25% being severe.
The TOTAL of the severe cases is then about 40 to 50%, i.e.
about HALF of adults in the U.S.
10% are power abusers; 10% are substance abusers; 30% are severe
co-dependents.
Eating disorders are common mainly to co-dependents; half of us
may have severe eating disorders.
THE SERIOUSNESS OF POWER ABUSE
The public has gradually accepted the reality that spouse abuse
and child abuse are common.
When these abuses were first reported in the early 80s, they
were widely disbelieved by the public.
People thought: How could there be so much abuse without
everyone knowing about it?
Now we know it's possible, because abusers and victims are often
in denial, or are naive or deceptive.
Power abuse is widespread, and every major field of human
endeavor is corrupted by dominators,
Government, business, health care, science, law, education, and
media are seriously corrupt.
How can society function, if there is so much corruption?
It functions because a majority continue to be fairly
responsible and honest.
But among the leaders in each field, there is much greater
corruption than in lower echelons.
The abusers skim their profits off the top, like the mob does,
taking in a few percent.
They know how to keep society functioning despite their thefts,
assaults and manslaughters.
The film, JFK, shows very good evidence of high-level corruption
behind the murder of JFK.
There was corruption in the murder itself and more corruption in
covering up for the real murderers.
Robert Kennedy promised, if elected president in 68, to get to
the bottom of his brother's murder.
He was murdered before the election. Martin Luther King was
murdered two months earlier.
King's family and friends believe the real murderers of King
were also covered up by the government et al.
After Nixon's resignation in 74, Congress investigated the CIA
and FBI and found extensive corruption.
Since leaders of other countries are often corrupt, it should
not seem absurd to think many of our leaders are too.
Suspicion of widespread corruption should not be taken as an
excuse for despair, or fear.
If we look honestly at history, we can see plenty of reason for
optimism.
SOME SUCCESSES AGAINST POWER ABUSE IN WESTERN HISTORY
The history of western civilization is checkered with triumphs
over power abuse.
Greece was the known source of our civilization, which developed
ideas about science and government.
Jesus and Paul promoted government for the common good of all -
called agape', or Love thy Neighbor.
St. Augustine, 400 AD, revived and explained the idea of agape'.
Charlemagne, 800, formed a nation independent of church dominion
and formed alliances with Muslims.
The Renaissance, 13-1500s, was a movement to revive and increase
knowledge to improve people's lives.
Joan of Arc, 1431, inspired the government of France to fight
for the common good of its people.
Louis XI, King of France, 1470s, gave possessions of Nobility to
the people and favored the common good.
Henry VII, King of England, 1490s, followed some of the example
of Louis XI.
Treaty of Westphalia, 1648, established principles for ending
and preventing wars.
William Shakespeare, 1590s, inspired the public to wisdom
through plays.
Cardinal Nicolas of Cusa, 1600s, promoted principles of science
for improving human conditions.
American Colonists, 1600s, established framework for
Constitutional government.
Ben Franklin, 1700s, organized Colonists in support of an
Independent Republic.
Alexander Hamilton, 1790s, developed economic principles to
benefit the common people.
John Quincy Adams, 1840s, opposed U.S. corruption and helped
Latin America.
Abraham Lincoln, 1860s, saved the nation from secession and
ended slavery.
Czar Alexander II of Russia, 1870s, freed the serfs and
instituted policies like those of Lincoln.
Thomas Edison, 1900s, advanced scientific methodology for
humanity.
Franklin D Roosevelt, 1930s & 40s saved the world from fascism
and advanced humane economics.
Bill Wilson, 1930s to 60s, founded AA, which has led many to
recovery from addiction and co-dependence.
Martin L King & John F Kennedy, 1960s, worked to end racism and
improve conditions for the oppressed.
Thomas Gordon & Jean Liedloff, 1970s, explained the need for
sensitivity in human relations.
Numerous amateur and professional historians, in the 1970s &
beyond, explained power abuse among upper classes. Some came to
appreciate and promote FDR'S and JFK's ideals regarding the
common good..
Anne Schaef, 1980s, explained co-dependence and how it enables
power abuse.
Most of these people overcame tremendous opposition to achieve
success to improve the human condition.
They are all models on which we can base our own efforts to
carry on with further progress.

13. Lesson 13. - ENDING THE ENABLING OF POWER ABUSE
CO-DEPENDENTS MUST STOP "ENABLING" OR ENCOURAGING POWER ABUSE
Nearly everyone suffers from some degree of Co-dependence and
Power Abuse.
Substance Abuse often starts as a reaction to those with
Co-dependence or Power Abuse disorders.
Co-dependents are emotionally dependent on or submissive to
abusers of power or substances.
This dependence tends to "enable" or encourage others to act as
authorities, which often leads to power abuse.
All immature authorities tend to become authoritarian, which
means power abusing.
Power abuse is trying to control others by unnecessary force,
threat, or deception.
A common symptom of co-dependence and power abuse is
insensitivity, which is also called denial.
Denial occurs as our fears, or insecurity, move out of our
conscious minds into our subconscious.
WE MUST STOP OUR DENIAL
No nation or society is safe from self-destruction until the
Addictive Process is overcome.
12 Step programs began the process of societal recovery by
teaching recovery from addiction.
Families of addicts later learned to use the same program to
recover from co-dependence.
Society has not yet achieved much recovery from power abuse,
especially among the upper class.
This is because of persistent denial, which is most common among
the most powerful, due to pride.
CodaPlus will try here to help end this denial, so recovery on
this front can begin in earnest.
Nearly everyone who is co-dependent also practices some degree
of power abuse.
We tend to deny this, because we try to maintain an image of
niceness.
But most of us try to control others by deception and this is a
type of power abuse.
We also neglect ourselves and others to some degree and this
withholding of power is also power abuse.
Neglecting ourselves includes such simple things as holding on
to our fears, which neglects our mental health.
Such fears prevent us from learning and doing what's responsible
and that's not "nice."
Remember, signs of potential power abuse include frequent
insults, criticisms, or anger, pride, grandiosity, controlling,
selfishness, jealousy, demands, threats, hatred, and violence.
And remember that actual power abuse is any effort to control
others by unnecessary force, threat, or deception. And how many
of us have not been guilty of one or more of these behaviors?
WHILE ENDING DENIAL, WATCH FOR FALSE GUILT
It is not power abuse to use power to take care of young kids or
others in need.
Power abuse is unnecessarily depriving anyone of freedom,
excitement, affection, cooperation, knowledge, or other needs.
We need to be aware of the dangers of the Addictive Process, but
we also need to avoid false guilt.
Although power abuse is rampant in society, co-dependence is
much more common.
Ending co-dependence must come first, because co-dependence
"enables" power abuse.
Co-dependents need to learn the difference between false guilt
and real guilt.
We co-dependents must stop tolerating our own abusiveness and
then stop tolerating that of others.
To do this, we must stop denying co-dependence and power abuse
in ourselves and in society.
HOW TO BUILD ENOUGH COURAGE TO TRIUMPH
How much more could we do for good, if we had courage, instead
of fear?
Isn't it obvious that courage would help us to triumph in many
situations that otherwise fail?
I stated before that Love is Power; this power is the best
source of courage.
This power is by way of supportive friends or loved ones or
higher power that encourages us.
Just being accepted in others' company and being shown respect
is largely what love means in this case.
12 Step meetings, and the like, can provide this kind of
respect, which gradually builds our self-confidence.
One 12 Step member said he was an obedient victim, so when he
was told to go to meetings, he did.
This was one case in which obedience paid off, so be like him
and obey good advice.
But begin relying less on others to make your decisions for you,
as you gain confidence.
HOW TO END POWER ABUSE
Use the 12 Steps to relieve stressful emotions and to end power
abuse.
Then carry the 12 Step message to other power abusers who still
suffer.
Study literature on Intervention, such as Vernon Johnson's book,
I'll Quit Tomorrow.
CodaPlus will work on getting the best available information on
intervening in power abuse.
Material on spouse abuse, child abuse and violence prevention
should be helpful in the mean time.
Group inventories can also help to end groups' power abuses.
GROUP INVENTORY ADDENDA
See Lesson 7 for pointers on inventory; further ideas for group
inventory follow.
Start group inventory by listing from 3 to 10 of the worst
current flaws in your group.
List how the group mistreats members and non-members.
Ask other members and non-members to list the flaws they can
think of too, without consulting your list.
Meet with willing members et al to discuss the combined lists to
determine which are the main flaws.
Determine and list with the main flaws what amends may need to
be made.
Present findings to group leaders and request admissions and
needed amends, if any, need to be made.
Read the 12 & 12 on Steps 4 through 7 to see what are some
advantages of doing group inventory.

WARNING: COGNITIVE DISSONANCE DANGER NEXT 3 MILES
WHO'S AFRAID OF COGNITIVE DISSONANCE? - A SHORT MORALITY PLAY
They say cognitive dissonance is having 2 or more contradictory
thoughts in your mind at once. And some say this is so
uncomfortable that most people automatically reject any new
thoughts that are dissonant.
Do you think it's a good idea to reject new thoughts that
disagree with other thoughts you have? Is it really so
uncomfortable to have inharmonious thoughts in your mind? What
are the odds that the older thoughts you've had are always the
best and new thoughts are bad?
Doesn't it make more sense to judge thoughts by whether they
make the most sense, instead of by whether they're too
different? How many old ideas have you let go of in the past in
exchange for better ideas?
Did you ever believe in Santa Claus? Did you believe, because
your parents, relatives and friends said it was true? Did you
stop believing when your friends told you it wasn't true? Was
that cognitive dissonance for you? Was it uncomfortable to think
people had fibbed to you in the past? Did you forgive them,
because Santa Claus was a nice fairy tale for kids to hear?
Does it make sense to believe in ideas, because most people
believe in them? That would be believing in public opinion,
which is called conventional wisdom. How often does conventional
wisdom pick the best president or other politician?
In the stock market those who follow conventional wisdom lose
money, because what most people think are the best buys are the
ones that cost the most and, what people think are the worst,
cost the least. Paying less usually brings more profit than
paying the most.
Do you think your country, your religion, your sports team, your
doctor, your teacher, your politician and your boss are the best
in the world? Do you think those who have different countries,
religions, sports teams, doctors, teachers, politicians and
bosses are all wrong in thinking theirs are the best?
To most people I think religion is the most important belief
they have. It seems that perhaps all religions have some members
who are gung-ho and believe almost everything their religion
says, while some are less gung-ho and believe most of their
creed, but not all, and usually don't tell others this, and the
rest don't care much about the creed, but just like their
friends in that religion and give only lip service to the
beliefs. The same seems to hold true with respect to belief in
people's countries and politicians too. If every religion has
gung-ho members and only one religion is the best or most
correct, then there are a lot of gung-ho people who are partly
wrong.
Pride is a much greater danger than cognitive dissonance; isn't
it? So isn't it much better to think over new thoughts or ideas
and see what makes the most sense, instead of automatically
rejecting new ideas?
Most people are pretty decent and have good-will toward most
others and want what's best for all of humanity. But most people
are also a little abusive, usually not realizing it much. Some
are very abusive and may not realize it, or don't care.
All of this abusiveness adds up and prevents us all from having
a much better, more civilized society.
.We still have wars and major conflicts around the world.
.We still have secretive manipulative people in intelligence
organizations in many countries who try to manipulate foreign
and domestic peoples covertly via terrorism and many other
tactics.
.We still have greedy people in big businesses who try to
manipulate the government for their own benefit and not for the
benefit of the common people.
.We still have international drugs and arms smuggling and
organized crime.
.We still have way too much corruption in nearly all circles.
For lack of knowledge the people perish. This book is about
abuses in society and knowledge of how to end abuses. When
abusiveness is much diminished, humanity will prosper,
spiritually and physically. Don't you think that's true?
REVISING OPINIONS - A SECOND BRIEF MORALITY PLAY
When we have gotten acquainted with anyone over a period of
time, we get a somewhat fixed mental picture of them that is
hard to change. We get similar static mental pictures of people
whom we know of only via the media. And we get static mental
pictures of groups, organizations, movements and nations too. We
also have such pictures in our minds about the media itself.
These pictures, or ideas, are called opinion or Public Opinion.
Many people distrust the views of the media, but we still get
many of our views from them anyway. Some of us get our views
from alternative media, but many distrust them too.
Of what value are such opinions? The best way to view opinions
is probably as works in progress. Sometimes they're pretty
accurate, but usually they're too sketchy.
Pride causes us to view our opinions as virtual facts instead of
as what they are: sketchy works in progress. If children were as
afraid to let go of their opinions as many adults are, they'd
become adults who believe that Santa Claus is a real person;
that storks deliver babies; that crossing their fingers brings
good luck; and that they're the center of the universe. Pride in
opinions, such as that one's group, country, race, or religion
is the center of the universe, leads to conflicts, hardships and
terror. Pride is immature and ignorant; does it make sense to be
proud of our immaturity or ignorance?
Can parents be proud of their kids? When pride is meant in the
sense of admiration for others, it can be healthy. But if it
gives a sense of superior merit over others, it's unrealistic.
Such pride easily leads to abusiveness.
This book is a wake-up call. Most people will have some trouble
accepting some of the writings herein as possible or plausible.
But consider this. How likely is it that our media, which are
owned by the wealthy upper class, mostly Republican & Democrat,
mostly white Protestant, Catholic & secretly Pagan, are
interested in the best interests of the common people, rather
than upper class interests of maintaining wealth and power? And
how likely is it that the highly educated, intelligent and
independent thinkers, who've written the articles in this book,
are all wrong?
THE TOP 7 AUTHORITARIAN ABUSES
Authoritarianism is domination of others by force, threat, and
or deception. Irresponsible authorities are authoritarians.
All people have basic needs for affection, freedom, excitement,
cooperation, knowledge etc. Authoritarians deprive others, as
well as themselves, of many ot these needs.
Authoritarians prefer that people be subject to authority
instead of having individual freedom. To be subject is to be
under domination, control, or influence. Domination is rule,
often arbitrary rule, i.e. capricious, whimsical, unreasonable,
oppressive, despotic, autocratic, or tyrannical rule, and abuse
of power.
Youths and other dependents require guidance by authority of
their elders. But all human beings have needs and rights,
regardless of age or dependency. These needs and rights include
well-being, affection, freedom, excitement, cooperation and
knowledge. Authorities have responsibility to provide
sufficiency of these needs without jeopardizing dependents'
well-being.
Domination is due to fear of being dominated by others. The most
dangerous fears are: fear of being dominated, or of losing power
or control, or fear for one's group losing power, when these
fears lead to domination of others; and fear of being
outnumbered, or of overpopulation of enemies, when this leads to
racism, oppression, or genocide. These fears are especially
dangerous, because they lead to abuse of power, especially to
secretive schemes of abuse, aggression, cold wars, and covert
genocide.
Business, government and associations are often used as covers
for abusing power in these ways. Careful study suggests that the
most dangerous abuses in modern times are the following:
1. IMF austerity programs for third world countries and others;
2. Upper class promotion of fascism and tyranny over lower
classes, even in democracies, such as by parts of the Patriot
Act and federal guidelines on prosecution of crime etc, which
result in unjust imprisonment of many basically innocent people
from lower classes;
3. Government, media and business promotion of dangerous medical
therapies, especially vaccinations, dangerous drugs and
expensive, unhealthful treatments;
4. Child abuse, verbal and physical abuse and neglect, bigotry
and racism;
5. Contamination of air, food, water, drugs, supplements and of
containers or packaging for these things;
6. Miseducation and misinformation by the media and education
system; and
7. Suppression of science, technology and prosperity economics.
THE TOXIC MIND
The Biology of Mental Illness and Violence - Elnora Van Winkle -

Suppressing anger causes toxic amounts of neurochemicals to
accumulate in the brain along neural pathways where memories of
parents are stored.
Anger is usually misdirected toward mostly innocent parties,
including oneself.
Pent up anger from childhood needs to be directed toward mental
or physical images of one's childhood abusers, not the actual
persons, by pounding on something soft and yelling at the
remembered image/s in private.
This helps healing by preventing further accumulation of

Sexual abuse touches every life when violence and crime occurs
when there are disorders like eating, weight gain, substance
abuse, suicide, promiscuity/ prostitution, psychiatric issues.
Survivors of childhood sexual abuse lose their trust, self
esteem, and develop shame, guilt and depression.
. 1 in 4 girls is sexually abused before the age of 14 (1).
. 1 in 6 boys is sexually abused before the age of 16 (1).
. 39 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse exist in
America today (3).
. 95% of all victims know their perpetrators (4). With girls,
29% were relatives and 60% were acquaintances(5). With boys 16%
were relatives and 44% were acquaintances(5).
. 15% of students will be sexually abused by a school staff
member during their school life (6).
. The median age for reported abuse is 9.9 for boys and 9.6 for
girls (7)
. Only 1 in 10 tell (9): 42% of women and 33% of men never
disclose the experience to ANYONE (7). Young victims may not
recognize their victimization as sexual abuse (10). 79%
initially deny abuse or are tentative in disclosing. Of those
who do disclose, approximately 75% disclose accidentally.
Additionally, of those who do disclose, 22% eventually recant
even though the abuse occurred (11). Fabricated sexual abuse
reports constitute only 1% to 4% of all reported cases. Children
only fabricate 1/2% of the time (12).

Victim Statistics - Child Abductions by Non-Family Members
150,000 per year; Child Abductions by Family Members 340,000 per
year.
. 1 in 3 girls will have sexual contact with an adult.
. 1 in 5 boys will have sexual contact with an adult.
. 300% increase in Child Sexual Abuse since 1980. 44% of abuse
is neglect, 24% physical, and 15% Sexual.
. 30% of women in prison were abused. 90 to 95% of teen
prostitutes were abused.
Schools identify the majority of cases. Disabled children are
more likely to be abused.
Abuser Statistics - Most sexual abusers victimize over 100
victims before being caught. 40% of offenders in prison and 75%
of serial rapists were once victims. 20% of abusers are
adolescents. Almost all sexual abusers are heterosexual men.
6 Steps To Preventing, Recognizing, and Reacting Responsibly to
Child Sexual Abuse - A Guide for Responsible Adults - What is
child sexual abuse? This, of course, includes sexual contact.
And it also includes non-contact acts such as exhibitionism,
exposure to pornography, voyeurism and communicating in a sexual
manner by phone or Internet. An agonizing and traumatic
experience for its victims.
.Step 1. Learn the facts. Understand the risks. Realities-not
trust-should influence your decisions regarding your child.
.Step 2. Minimize opportunity. If you eliminate or reduce
one-adult/one-child situations, you'll dramatically lower the
risk of sexual abuse for your child.
.Step 3. Talk about it. Children often keep abuse a secret, but
barriers can be broken down by talking openly about it.
.Step 4. Stay alert. Don't expect obvious signs when a child is
being sexually abused.
.Step 5. Make a plan. Learn where to go, who to call and how to
react.
.Step 6. Act on suspicions. The future well-being of a child is
at stake.
"My school has a program to teach children about sexual abuse
prevention - but what about adults? Shouldn't they be more
responsible than a six-year-old?" A child's safety is an adult's
job. ... Coaches, teachers and parents are authority figures
children feel they can trust. Yet, a large percentage of those
who sexually abuse children come from this group. These are
adults who have the opportunity to "groom" children with
affection and attention, making it difficult for children to
identify certain attention as abuse. And they know that children
have been taught to "mind" them. This is why child-focused
prevention programs must be supplemented with programs that
focus on adult responsibility.

For more than sixteen years I was a vessel for pain, working at
a rape crisis centre. People, mostly women, but lots of men and
children, called to tell their stories of rape and abuse. Each
one unique but with so many similarities: powerlessness,
self-contempt, self-blame, a fruitless search for justice,
overwhelming shame, isolation, secrets never told.
Every time I thought I had heard it all, a new spin on depravity
would reach across the phone lines - (!!!) Incest, Pedophilia,
Rape, Bestiality, Mutilation, Multiple victims (I refuse to use
the civilized words, like molestation, domestic abuse,
fondling). The continuum of violence morphed beyond the
imagination of even the most depraved, [as victims included:]
(!!!)A six-week-old baby, An 88-year-old woman, A disabled
teenager, Hundreds of aboriginals stolen from their homes,
Twenty-two foster children, Fifteen alter boys, Ten patients,
Six students. No one is safe, ever.
And sometimes the fog made me look at every man as if he had a
beast hiding within - The police officer, The doctor, The
lawyer, The teacher, The repairman, The lover, The friend.
Sexual offenders conceal themselves so well, even as women, all
hiding behind their deviance, or culturally derived motives.
After the government took the funding away from our centre, the
files were shredded. All that remained was millions of illegible
strips of paper sent to a garbage heap someplace in southern
Ontario. As if their lives, their stories didn't matter, like it
never happened. Poof! It was all invalidated.
In spite of all the forensic evidence, the judge dispensed
justice by dismissing the charges against the monster. He said
the children's fragile memories, caused by paralyzing fear,
created reasonable doubt.
I struggle most days between trying to erase the hundreds of
images of people reaching out to me for help and agonizing over
every detail of every call I answered, as if forgetting were
criminal.
I have stopped telling my own story of rape, which brought me to
this work over 20 years ago. Speaking out to anyone who would
listen helped me survive and released me from the strain of
keeping a secret. As did fighting, naively it appears, for
equity within an unjust system more committed to the sin of
denial. .Lately, as a writer, I blow off steam by exposing, as
if it were ever hidden, the systemic failure of police to
investigate sex crimes (as they like to call them - like sex had
anything to do with it) in a manner that is free of gender and
race discrimination.
Resist turning away and listen, please, like our collective
survival depends on it. Because if we can't live with the truth,
its chains will bind us forever.

war bandwagon, eager to seek justice or revenge. Women too have
been supportive of the retaliatory violence and are occasionally
even elected as leaders, but generally it's the men, through
centuries of patriarchal conditioning, who are still very much
in control throughout the world.
This gender conditioning, as described in the groundbreaking
book Real Boys' Voices by Dr. William Pollack (Owl Books 2000),
demands that boys: Stand on their own two feet; Always be
independent; Separate from Mom and all things female or
feminine; Never show feelings except anger; Use sex as a
conquest; Never show fear of violence; Be macho and tough;
Always be on top and in the limelight. Pollack names this male
conditioning the "boy code", which he says perpetuates a
terrible injustice, not only for boys who are denied their full
range of emotions and capabilities, but for the women and girls
who love them.
Education Wife Assault (

group based in Toronto "whose sole purpose is to prevent
violence against women," describes male violence as a learned
behaviour occurring in all classes, races and cultures. Their
members believe it is a choice and a belief about male roles
that contributes to violence. Boys grow up believing it is okay
for men to use force to get their power and it is acceptable to
express anger with violence. We don't have to look to
Afghanistan to see the impact sexism has on the lives of boys
and girls.
Canadian mothers are often encouraged to stop breastfeeding
early, so as not to make their sons dependent. Parents are
compelled to abandon their weeping five year old at the steps of
his school to help make him into a real man - God forbid he be a
sissy. Boys witness their fathers abuse their mothers. "Big boys
don't cry", we tell our sons. All these sexist parenting myths
create a gender straightjacket never allowing boys to be their
authentic selves.
Sexism teaches mothers to have misgivings about forming close
bonds with their sons and encourages and in some cases insists
[on] early separation. When boys appear sad or afraid during
this forced premature separation from their mother, most
cultures make them feel ashamed of themselves. This shame haunts
many boys for the rest of their lives, eroding their
self-confidence and leaving them disconnected emotionally.
Early sexism follows many boys into their adulthood, causing
depression and loneliness and turning them to alcohol, drugs and
crime. It is also thought to be a major reason why so many men
rape and abuse women. Men learn early on to connect with people,
especially women, by controlling them, rather than through an
emotional bond. This connection is unreal and the more fragile
it becomes, the more he must control her. His control often
escalates to physical violence, when his wife becomes pregnant
and as the juries in the Gillian Hadley and Arlene May inquests
have heard, to murder, when she attempts to escape his abuse.
Many would argue we are a much more evolved society today, the
gains of feminism making sexism less visible. Parents and
teachers are more informed and often give boys the message it is
okay to cry and be sensitive. We talk more openly about sexism,
racism, homophobia and other discrimination and we celebrate
diversity, supposedly. The boy code still reigns supreme though,
in many playgrounds, classrooms and living rooms and boys are
left feeling confused and isolated.
New research described in Dr. Michael Thompson's [book],
Speaking of Boys - Answers to the Most-Asked Questions About
Raising Sons (Ballantine Publishing, 2000), is finding boys are
doing worse in school than in the past, have remarkably low
self-esteem, and the rates of depression and suicide are on the
rise. Boys (especially black boys) are more than twice as likely
to be labeled as "learning disabled", more often diagnosed with
attention deficit disorder and prescribed potentially harmful
medications. Under Ontario's tough Safe Schools Act, boys are
being disproportionately punished for breaking tight new rules.
Under this Act recently, a Scarborough boy was expelled for
bringing a ceremonial native hatchet to school. On the
flip-side, Bill 101, another piece of Tory legislation that is
supposed to protect students from being sexually exploited, only
recommends teachers, accused, or convicted, of sexual abuse, be
separated from the students. Something is terribly wrong, as
both Acts fail in their goal to promote safety.
In spite of all the anti-violence initiatives and law and order
agendas pushed by eager politicians, the victimization of women
and children continues at epidemic rates, with 3-6 women being
murdered by their partners each month in Ontario alone. The vast
majority of violent offenders are men. Clearly the preventative
measures we have taken to date have failed to address the root
cause of and men's propensity towards violence.
Much work still needs to be done to make life safer for girls.
Empowering boys to find their real selves will make boys less
likely to feel the rage of internalized shame as they mature.
Replacing the boy code will allow boys to express themselves
more authentically and less likely to become men who use their
positions of power to commit violence, whether towards the women
they love, or a country they despise.
ABUSE RECOGNITION AND RESTITUTION, By Anne Marie Aikins.
Julian Falconer, the feisty Toronto lawyer with a reputation for
fighting for human rights, is representing two raped women, who
are suing the RCMP and Metro police. Their lawsuit, which the
RCMP tried to block from being heard in court this past winter,
alleges the police failed to act on women's sexual assault
complaints. This ultimately allowed, the women claim, Melbourne
Lee, a man with a long history of violence, including murder, to
be free to commit more violent crimes. If successful, this
unique civil case will be one more step to publicly recognizing
that woman abuse is a community problem and provide the
restitution necessary to rebuild the survivors' sense of order
and justice.
For third party lawsuits to be successful the plaintiffs must
provide evidence the defendants failed in their duties, due to
gender discrimination, callous disregard for the public's
safety, or negligence. Though these types of cases are
relatively uncommon in Canada, Lee's victims are not the first
women, who have survived rape, to seek recognition and
restitution within the civil courts.
Last year, the British Columbia department of Corrections Canada
settled out of court with a 40-year-old woman who was raped in
1998 by James Armbruster, a career criminal who was a resident
of a halfway house. The civil suit was resolved just before a
three-week trial was scheduled to begin. The woman received
$215,000, most of which she must pay back to Workers
Compensation and to her lawyer.
The woman, known only as Beulah, was disappointed the matter
would not be fully disclosed in open court, as she claimed her
lawsuit was launched to prevent cases like hers from ever
happening again. Armbruster had a violent past, including a
conviction for raping his own grandmother, and should have been
declared a dangerous offender and never released from prison,
she said.
In 1988, a young Barrie, Ontario woman was held captive at
gunpoint and raped by Jim Jones, a repeat violent offender who
had walked away from a halfway house in Toronto. "Mary" sued
Corrections Canada and the National Parole Board - the first
lawsuit of its kind in Canada and went public with her claims in
an attempt to create awareness of the dangers of releasing
violent offenders without adequate supervision.
Corrections Canada again settled out of court for an undisclosed
amount of money in 1996. Jim Jones was declared a dangerous
offender and therefore jailed indefinitely. The parole board is
once again considering his release, seemingly undeterred by the
lawsuits. "I can't believe they didn't learn their lesson", Mary
said.
In 1991, another Ontario woman was raped and nearly murdered by
Philippe Clement, a violent offender who walked out of Beaver
Creek, a minimum-security prison in Bracebridge. Her lawsuit in
1994 against Corrections Canada was the first to go to trial,
resulting in a payout of over $300,000.
"Jane Doe," a Toronto woman, successfully sued the police for
failing to notify her of a serial rapist in her neighbourhood,
who later brutally attacked her. She was awarded a quarter of a
million dollars in 1999 and Toronto City Council acted swiftly,
ordering an audit of the Toronto Police and their handling of
sexual assault investigations.
Abused women traditionally seek accountability within the
criminal courts, but increasingly some are looking beyond this
less-than-perfect system. Survivors often speak publicly about
their dissatisfaction with insensitive police investigations,
long waits for trials, judges' inadequate sentences and the lack
of treatment and supervision within correctional facilities.
Consequently, many are choosing to hold the systems accountable
in addition to, or instead of, reporting to the police.
Though many women have been successful in their lawsuits, this
strategy has seemingly failed to encourage the government, or
police, to change their discriminatory practices. Violent men,
like Melbourne Lee, are still able to prey on innocent women and
children, even when their victims have filed police complaints.
Some officers are reluctant to arrest abusive husbands and often
treat women like manipulative liars. Crown attorneys are not
given the resources needed to keep violent offenders behind
bars. Judges and correctional officials often fail to adequately
deal with the issues of treatment and supervision. And
politicians pay mere lip service to the issues. But these
lawsuits have given a clear message to police and others: you
will be held accountable for your neglectful mistakes.
Government tax cuts have resulted in a steady erosion of social
programs and services in this country, including those that
prosecute, incarcerate, treat and supervise our ever-increasing
prison population. Police budgets continue to receive an
escalation in their funding each year, but this has done
nothing, it appears, to prevent woman abuse.
Though it may seem futile to encourage abused women to hold
systems accountable, it serves to draw much needed attention to
the changes required to make women's lives safer. It also helps
survivors feel empowered and provides for financial
compensation, the recognition and restitution they deserve.
"This was the only time I felt in control since the day Jim
Jones raped me," Mary commented in a recent interview.
Maybe as the lawsuits from brave survivors pile up and the
financial awards escalate, the police, Corrections Canada and
our elected officials will pay attention to women.
RECOVERED MEMORY DEBATE - IF ONLY SHE WERE ALIVE, By Anne Marie

After spending the past 18 years working as an advocate with
sexual assault survivors, my mind is at times overwhelmed by the
memories of the courageous people, mostly women, I have worked
with. Their faces will creep into my thoughts sometimes
unexpectedly, bringing me back to a courtroom, a hospital
treatment centre, or a group session, where I witnessed the
reliving of their rape, or abuse.
A memory of one particular woman, I will call her "Eve", made me
cry recently, after I read in a Canadian newspaper about British
scientists whose research validated recovered memories of
traumatic events and partially debunked the false memory theory.
This theory has been used to promote the view that therapists
and counselors are able to implant false memories of abuse in
their clients', or patients' minds, making them think they were
abused, when in fact they weren't. Articles about the theory
have been published in newspapers, magazines and periodicals all
over the world and testified about at many sexual assault
trials, creating doubt in judges' and juries' minds about the
truthfulness of victims' claims.
A group of parents and accused people in the United States
created an organization called the False Memory Syndrome
Foundation, in response to the influx in the 80's of adults
coming forward, claiming abuse as children. Their theory was
undocumented and unproven, but it didn't stop them from
testifying about false memory "syndrome". It didn't seem to
matter that the vast majority of survivors always knew they were
abused, like Eve, but only began exploring their secret memories
as adults. And it didn't seem to matter that their propaganda
was hurting many legitimate victims of violence and discouraging
them from seeking help or disclosing.
Eve sought my assistance in 1992 [at] the height of the false
memory debate, when she came to the rape crisis centre I founded
after I was raped. She had begun to remember how it felt, when
her father sexually abused and raped her, when she was a very
young child. After attending group and individual counseling,
Eve decided she needed to confront her father and stop him from
abusing any other children. She reported her abuse to the police
and he was subsequently charged.
At the trial, the defence introduced evidence of false memory
syndrome and the jury bought the theory, finding him not guilty.
Eve's father is not the only accused person to be acquitted of
sexual assault charges as a result of this "expert" evidence.
Eve, like many other survivors, was devastated by the outcome
and immediately began to doubt her memories. Her mother began to
pressure her to reunite with her family and pleaded with her to
put it all behind her. Believing her memories were "implanted"
and there was no abuse was enticing to her and Eve eventually
returned home, all forgotten and forgiven once again.
Eve's denial was so strong, she allowed her father to baby-sit
her three-year-old daughter, until one day the worst was
discovered. Her daughter disclosed to her that her grandfather
had been sexually abusing her. I will never forget the desperate
phone call from Eve. Her voice sounded like a wounded and
powerless child.
Eve collapsed into a black hole, a place she never found her way
out of, and she eventually killed herself. Her parents never
attended her funeral.
My own grief makes me wonder what kind of difference the British
research could have made in Eve's life: could it have prevented
her tragic death?
I am convinced these new findings must be comforting and
validating to other survivors, who have been diminished by false
memory mythology. I am hopeful that it encourages more people to
disclose their secrets. And I will be outraged if any other
judge allows this type of evidence into sexual assault trials
ever again.
I only wish the news made the front page of every newspaper for
all the Eves in the world to see.

3. EXPERT ABUSE, Anne Marie Aikins et al
PROFESSIONAL ABUSE & PTSD RECOVERY, By Anne Marie Aikins.
The consequences of sexual abuse, including rape, incest and
child sexual assault, are devastating, impacting women and
children at epidemic levels. To hear about the trauma requires
us to face both human vulnerability and our capacity for evil.
As bystanders to the pain, it is vital that we share the burden
of the pain and take action.
Sexual abuse often results in what physicians and therapists
refer to as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which
includes three stages. The first is shock and lasts from two to
six weeks, making the person feel numb, unable to really
comprehend what has happened, and leaving them unable to sleep,
eat, think clearly, or perhaps remember in [any] great detail.
The second is the feeling stage, where victims are flooded with
all the emotions triggered by the crime, such as terror,
sadness, grief, anxiety and guilt. It can last indefinitely,
depending on a person's background and support system, and
causes individuals a variety of debilitating consequences, such
as insomnia, phobias, chronic hyper-arousal, appetite
disturbances, disconnection, distrust, flashbacks, dissociation,
depression and suicidal thoughts. The third stage of PTSD is
resolution and sadly does not come for all survivors of sexual
abuse, especially if they do not receive appropriate counseling
and advocacy, or [if] there was no justice for the atrocities
they endured.
The consequences of sexual abuse are exacerbated when the
offender is a person the community entrusted with special powers
such as physicians, teachers and police officers. The public
often provides little support for people who accuse trusted
professionals with abuse, as there is widespread denial from
governing institutions and the courts. This results in most
victims suffering in silence, with a very small percentage ever
having the courage to report to the police. Research has shown,
the more trusted a position the offender holds, the less likely
a victim will report the crime. Victims' reasons for not
speaking out include: they won't be believed; they will be
blamed; and nothing will be done about it. Sadly, their
instincts bare the truth of an ignorant society still in denial.
These entrusted professionals are often given responsibility for
the lives of their patients, students, or the public and, when
that trust is abused, it results in a more complex PTSD.
Survivors' feelings of self-hate may be so intolerable they
develop self-harming behaviours to regulate them, such as:
eating disorders; substance abuse; or self-mutilation. They
often require more specialized and intensive therapy to survive
and restore their shattered self-esteem.
Just as PTSD has three stages, so does recovery. If the abuse
was prolonged and repeated, which is often the case in
professional abuse, the treatment can be more complicated and is
often not straightforward. Survivors may vacillate between
stages, when symptoms become too overwhelming to bear.
The first stage's main task is to re-establish safety in the
victim's life, keeping in mind the person is in shock and often
needs to see a medical professional. This may be very difficult
in cases of doctor abuse; therefore, it is recommended that a
support person attend appointments with the survivor. Abuse
survivors' power and control has been taken away so it is
important to restore this at the onset of therapy - an
overwhelming task when the offender is a professional.
The second stage is often the most prolonged and difficult,
given the central goal is remembrance and mourning. It is at
times difficult to witness and it is vital that helpers have
their own support system in place, to prevent them from
defending against the unbelievable by withdrawing or rescuing.
Remembrance means telling the story, identifying and naming the
problem, and confronting the past. Mourning requires the
survivor to attach the feelings to the memories and grieve all
they have lost. This is usually the longest and most painful,
but restorative, an extraordinary example of the capacity of
human survival.
The third and final recovery stage is referred to as
reconnection, as the survivor faces the task of creating a new
future, often with the assistance of group therapy, or political
action. The trauma changes a person forever and, by this stage,
survivors have learned that their post-trauma symptoms were
normal reactions to an intolerable situation - they responded to
the danger and they survived. They understand the effects of
their victimization and now are ready to incorporate these
lessons into their lives.
This is often when survivors make a conscious choice to report
the abuse to the authorities, which is why so many victims wait
to call the police, or medical association. Given the
confrontive and unsupportive nature of the reporting mechanisms
for survivors, this process often triggers all the symptoms of
PTSD, as they are forced to relive the trauma and face a
judgmental public.
Creating a protected space, where victims can speak out, is
vital to the recovery process, especially for individuals harmed
by trusted professionals.
SUE THE BASTARDS, By Anne Marie Aikins.
Black community leaders in Toronto have voiced their desperate
plea to government officials, to call an inquiry into the recent
deaths of young black men to gun violence. Even police
acknowledge the "crisis," though they strongly deny the problem,
or [that] their inability to solve the murders has anything to
do with racism.
Chief Julian Fantino called a news conference to express his
concern at the "spade of killings", an unfortunate faux pas, to
provide assurances to the community the police are doing
everything possible to analyze the "common elements and trends"
in the "hot spots". Fantino has a history of being an advocate
of collecting race-based crime statistics and continues to blame
the black community for the failure of the police to solve the
recent murders. He then used the tragedies to make a shameless
plug for more funding for his rank and file. Even Mayor Lastman
placated the community with his bullshit "I hate guns" rhetoric,
which once again focused the blame on everyone else's shoulders.
The community doesn't need yet another expensive inquiry, or
government commission, to examine the causes of the violence,
which will result in yet another useless report and ignored
recommendations. It is understandable that black leaders are
struggling to get someone to listen. They must feel like
powerless bystanders in a war against their community and they
rightfully demand accountability.
Research has long ago proven that economics, which is largely
influenced by racism, is directly connected to crime and
violence. The have-nots, the disenfranchised will try to take
that which is rightfully theirs. And anyone doubtful that black
communities are disproportionately affected by poverty need only
take a walk around Toronto. Economics is also influenced by
other forms of oppression such as sexism, therefore, black women
face dual discrimination and are doubly impacted.
The root causes of economic disparity and, therefore, violence
lie within government policies and reversing the resulting
mayhem will not be achieved by spending money on another
toothless inquiry, or hiring more police. Reparation and change
will only come when the government is compelled to compensate
the black community for the consequences of their failure to
recognize and uphold their constitutional right.
Black leaders should immediately file class action law suits
against the federal, provincial and municipal governments on
behalf of all the families who have lost loved ones, asking for
billions of dollars for the loss of affection and economic
security, citing the following evidence:
Destruction of employment and pay equity laws, removing access
to jobs and lowering wages, while increasing working hours;
Failing to promote affirmative action measures, which would
encourage redistribution of the wealth, power and income;
Slashing of welfare rates and toughening qualifying criteria,
causing escalating poverty;
Eliminating rent controls and abandoning affordable housing
plans, resulting in the homelessness crisis;
Increasing police powers while reducing accountability, making
accused persons more vulnerable to abusive officers and of being
wrongfully convicted;
Reducing legal aid budgets, minimizing citizens' access to
justice;
Pushing racist law and order agendas, which target the poor and
black communities;
Creating an education crisis through under-funding, resulting in
elimination of programs directly aimed at empowering
disenfranchised communities;
Promoting xenophobia through discriminatory immigration
policies;
Failing to support child care programs, making it impossible to
gain employment for many poor families;
Building more jails, which has criminalized our youth, instead
of treating the reasons for criminal behaviours;
Privatizing our health care system, making programs and services
less accessible to vulnerable people;
Institutionalizing our social services, such as anti-violence
programs, making them less accountable to users and unable to
provide meaningful advocacy services;
Closing community centres, libraries, swimming pools and other
services directly aimed at supporting young people
These are only some of the reasons the government is culpable
for the violence recently affecting the black community. The
increase in murders is only a reflection of years of
conservative "common sense" policies that are increasing
economic disparity and making a mockery of our constitution.
During the civil trial, jury members should be taken on a tour
to view the evidence of racism and how it is linked to
economics, and therefore government policies. They could visit
schools in Rosedale and Regent Park to see the racial
distribution of students. They could attend a Raptor game and
see the colour divide between the expensive and cheaper seats.
They could sit in on a meeting at Queens Park, the Metro Toronto
Police Board and City Council to witness the predominately white
male faces that hold decision-making powers.
And finally, they could visit the gravesites of all the young
black men who have succumbed to the racism. Any responsible and
compassionate jury will have no choice but to compensate the
grieving families.
PROFESSIONAL ABUSE BY LAWYERS AND EXPERTS [Australia] - See

The adversarial system in our FAMILY COURT has encouraged
"professional abuse" of the process by lawyers, psychologists,
psychiatrists, doctors and others. Why is it that so many
professionals are drawn into family disputes, which end up in
the Family Court?
Many will do so, more often than not, out of empathy, or an
eagerness to please. Most do not fully understand the
ramifications of their actions, and have little or no
understanding of the real issues.
In one notorious case, a female psychologist, a doctor no less,
was moved to write a report and make recommendations, based
entirely upon the word of a mother, who had visited her place of
practice over a short period. This report was given to the
mother's lawyer, who subsequently annexed the report to a sworn
affidavit on behalf of the mother, and given to the Family
Court.
Upon reading the report, the father made a complaint to THE
PSYCHOLOGISTS BOARD OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA. In its finding on the
complaint, the board found in favour of the complainant {the
father} and made the recommendation that the registrar of the
board should write to the PSYCHOLOGICAL SOCIETY, based in
Melbourne, asking that the society devote space in its
periodical, "Psychologically Speaking", educating its members of
the dangers of such a practise.
In this case, the psychologist not only made a report after
hearing only one side of the story, she never witnessed or
observed the child and the father together, and evidently, NEVER
saw the child either, yet felt so moved to write about the
"serious affect upon the child" and described the father as "a
stranger to the child". To do this, the psychologist acted
unprofessionally. Mention in the report by the psychologist of
"concerns for the child's safety" went beyond unprofessional
conduct and came into the realm of the criminal.
This is not an isolated case. Psychologists continue to act in
this way, and are only brought to heel upon complaint. Who knows
what effect these "reports" have upon a presiding judicial
officer, judge, or magistrate? Who knows the effect on access,
or the child's ability to continue a relationship with their
caring and loving father?
Unless this "evidence" can be tested by the writer being present
in the court, it should be ruled as being inadmissible by the
Family Court.
ABUSE BY LAWYERS. The lawyer concerned in the above case, was
the subject of an adverse finding by The Legal Practitioners
Complaints Committee, a statutory body set up under legislation
by the State Parliament.
DO NOT SUFFER THIS OR SIMILAR ABUSE BY THOSE WHO SHOULD KNOW
BETTER. Make your complaint to the relevant body, then bring
that finding to the attention of the Attorney General.
It seems that many in the legal profession have not yet got the
message. Allegations continue to be made, which are without
foundation, without evidence of any kind and are so made to
inflame the parties and broaden the issues.
This is an ABUSE of the court process and it MUST stop! In the
event of an allegation being made by a lawyer, and after proper
investigation by the authorities {the police}, there is found to
be no substance to the allegation, the lawyer responsible should
be brought before a Committee or Tribunal and made to explain on
what basis the allegation or allegations were first made. In the
event that the lawyer is unable to make a reasonable case, it
should be open to the committee to find against the lawyer and
issue a sanction, which would include: A reprimand including a
written apology; A suspension and or fine; A disbarring of the
lawyer from practise. If the above were to be implemented,
unfounded allegations and other abuse by lawyers would be almost
unheard of.
The ugly side of humanity is often revealed by its underbelly.
Many Family Court lawyers prey on the unsuspecting, deliberately
setting the parties against each other, for the benefit of their
own pocket, and create issues, which need not otherwise be
raised.
Every Family Court lawyer knows that, with a mother, they have a
winner and, with every father, they have a looser. The real
question is by how much?
End this abuse and demand that lawyers should no longer be a
part of family and or relationship breakdown resolution.

4. GOVERNMENT ABUSE
MAJOR INFLUENCES ON MY POLITICAL VIEWS
I grew up in a modestly politically conservative family. My
folks didn't discuss politics a lot and didn't seem to have
clear views, but Dad used to suspect politicians of being
Communist. He must've been influenced by McCarthyism. Mother and
Dad were both concerned about atheistic communism, as they were
and are very religious [Mom, Lutheran; Dad, Catholic]. Dad even
called LBJ a Communist, even though LBJ greatly escalated the
War in Vietnam supposedly against the spread of Communism.
In High School my views were influenced by both my science
teacher and my civics teacher. The former tended more to the
Republicans, the latter to the Democrats. But even the civics
teacher showed the class a film about numerous American
organizations that were said to be Communist fronts. This was
after JFK's assassination. He also discussed some of the
assassination conspiracy theories, which I also read about in
magazines. I tended to favor more liberal, i.e. progressive,
views by the time I graduated, but I wasn't that interested in
politics. I seem to have had the idea initially that Nixon was
progressive somehow, as I had favored his election.
In both high school and college I was interested mainly in
science. In my college sophomore year my new roommate showed me
a book he was reading for art class. It was a science book by
Velikovs ky. It was fascinating to me, which I'll discuss later
under abuse in science. This roommate, John Click, used drugs
and later moved off-campus with his girlfriend. Soon he
committed suicide successfully via drug overdose, after having
tried unsuccessfully before I met him. That was a terrible
waste, which I wish I could've helped prevent.
John subscribed to a magazine, which I inherited from our
mailbox after he died. Following is a list of the literature
I've read over the years that influenced me the most. My views
have been all over the place and I respect most people's views
and don't think there's as much disagreement among people as
they think. I think the major media intentionally try to divide
people against each other.
Ramparts [ca. 1969-74, via John Click] - Socialist magazine re
Conspiracy by the wealthy. Articles on Foundations as
conspirators were very impressive. 2 articles on vegetarianism,
The Vegetarian Manifesto and Beefed up Drugs in the Meat
Industry, persuaded me to become vegetarian in 1973 until 2000.
The Match! [1973-76?, via Ramparts, by Fred Woodworth of Tucson,
AZ]- Anarchist newspaper against government oppression. It
claimed that all government is based on force, which is
inhumane. I still agree that most use of force is inhumane and
abusive, but I don't believe that governments must use abusive
force.
Free Ourselves [1973-74, via Ramparts or The Match] - Anarchist
book by Art Aaron [of Albion, CA?] for grassroots organizing.
This convinced me that fighting is not the way to end
oppression, but spiritual organizing at the grassroots level.
None Dare Call It Conspiracy [1976-77, via Oahspe people] Book
by Gary North on Conspiracy by the wealthy. This showed that
both Communist and Capitalist countries were controlled by the
same wealthy class.
Vote Scam [ca. 1995] - book by Jim Collier on vote fraud in
Florida and Ohio. Jim ran for public office in Florida around
1972 against Claud Pepper, when Janet Reno was Attorney General.
He and his brother found that some of the voting machines were
rigged. They tried to get Reno to look into it, but she wouldn't
help. They later found vote fraud in Ohio too. The League of
Women Voters they said counted the votes however they wanted to.
They said after JFK's assassination the news media were told
they could determine elections how they wanted, i.e. the owners,
not the anchors. The media are said to manipulate the vote by
their own reporting.
Infowars.com [ca. 1996-2004] - website on Conspiracy for death
camps and enslavement. This is Alex Jones's site. Jones is
another radio or tv talk show host, in Texas. He shows more
evidence of government agents run amuck, as in the ca. 1998
Seattle WTO Conference, during which police allowed masked men
to huddle in a government building and to destroy property
during demonstrations, apparently with intent to incite riots.
Skolnicsreport.com [ca. 1996-2002] - website on Conspiracies by
corrupt government authorities. I think Skolnic, who's disabled,
has a Chicago cable tv show on which he reports government
abuses regularly. He has many articles on conspiracies.
Emerging Viruses: AIDS & Ebola [1997 via Art Bell Radio Show],
Healing Codes [ca. 2000], Death in the Air [ca. 2002] - books by
Len Horowitz on Conspiracy for genocide. I'd been skeptical
about major conspiracies by the early 90s, but Hoagland's and
Horowitz's literature convinced me that major conspiracies were
real. Horowitz showed that AIDS was a man-made virus created
under Nixon's biological warfare scheme and that it was designed
for genocide. He also showed that the people behind this scheme
were fascists associated formerly with Hitler's Nazis, who were
in the 1920s to 40s also supported knowingly by the wealthy in
the U.S. and Britain mainly. Since the Nazis and others were
major powers conspiring for world domination via war & genocide,
it has to be admitted that such conspiracies are not
implausible.
Waco: Rules of Engagement [ca. 1997 via website?] - video on
government crimes at the Waco compound near Waco, TX in 1993. G.
Gordon Liddy, one of the Watergate burglars under Nixon, who was
previously a lawyer and FBI agent, and later a radio talk show
host, said the ATF agents and the FBI Hostage Rescue Team were
rogue government agents run amuck at Waco. This murder and abuse
of innocent people led many to fear the government and to
prepare to fight. See Walter Williams' article, Government Abuse
and the Rise of Militias, below.
Compromised [ca. 1998 via internet] - book by Terry Reed on CIA
smuggling drugs into the U.S. Reed was a pilot for the CIA, but,
when he found out they were smuggling drugs etc into the U.S.,
he quit and tried to expose them. His friend, Bobby Sands, who
claimed to have evidence against George Bush's sons using
cocaine, was killed when he was to testify in court. Bill
Clinton was said to have known about the drugs too. In the
beginning of the book Reed quoted former president Harry Truman
as saying, when he sponsored the bill creating the CIA, he
didn't intend for it to engage in espionage or black operations.
Someone said the CIA used a legal loophole in the law to assume
authority to do these things. Allen Dulles, the Nazi-lover who
worked for the Rockefellers previously, was, I think, CIA
Director at that time. He is also likely to have been involved
in JFK's assassination.
Losing Your Illusions [1999 via internet] - book by Gordon
Phillips on most taxes being not for citizens. Gordon showed
that the income tax, employment taxes and FICA taxes are not
required to be paid by U.S. citizens, but that government agents
during WW2 made it appear that way, so the secret controllers of
the government would have access to Americans' wealth. He showed
what the internal revenue laws actually say, and he appears to
be entirely right. A website, SAPF.org, which was connected with
Gordon, appears to have been jammed by the government lately.
The Patriot Act, which has unlawful provisions within it, is
probably an excuse they use to disable websites etc. Some sites
refer to fascist government agents as jack-booted thugs.
The Biggest Secret [2000 via friend at First Amendment Rights
meeting, a meeting I held in St. Louis] - book by David Icke on
Conspiracy for world domination. David said he used to be
president of the Green Party in Britain, until he found that it
was controlled by major big business polluters. He studied
Zecharia Sitchin's literature and many others and concluded in
his own weird way that there's a race of lizard people from
another planet that control all of the world's governments. He
thinks they use hypnosis, like some reptile species do, to make
people unaware of their lizard-like features. His theory is
really absurd, but among the silly conclusions there are also
some interesting facts mentioned. There's a chapter on Satanism
that shows that Satanists apparently had a lot of influence in
the Catholic Church and other Churches, especially in Europe, at
least in earlier centuries. But major figures in European
Royalty appear to be still connected with Satanism. Prince
Bernard and I think Prince Phili were Nazi SS members and the
Nazis were certainly Satanists.
The New Satanists [ca. 2000 via Icke's book?] - book by Linda
Blood on Satanic cults. Linda was a member of a Satanist group
that founded the Temple of Set. It had some connection to
Michael Aquino, a high-level military officer, who was accused
of child abuse and who was involved in much secret army
psychological operations on mind control. Satanists are said to
have infiltrated much of our military. Timothy McVeigh is said
to have been under their influence.
Treason in America [2000 via Icke's book] - book by Anton
Chaitkin on covert British Imperialist Conspiracy for world
domination and genocide. This book I found in the bibliography
of Icke's book, The Biggest Secret. Chaitkin showed that
Britain's imperialists continued to attempt to gain control of
the U.S. after the American Revolution and were the major
influence behind slavery, the secession movement, the Civil War,
the assassinations of our presidents and of leaders of other
countries, like Russia's Alexander II, our Sixteenth Amendment
for Income Tax and the Federal Reserve System, the World Wars,
Communism and the Nazis, the Vietnam War, JFK's assassination
etc. The Lyndon LaRouche movement concurs with these claims and
I find most of their claims credible. They claim the U.S. and
other Republics were founded on the biblical principle of Love
thy Neighbor, as expressed in statements about the General
Welfare of the People. Imperialists on the other hand oppose
human rights except for the ruling clas.
The New Federalist [2001-4 via Chaitkin's book] - newspaper on
the American System of Freedom. This is LaRouche's newspaper,
which has a lot of interesting information with good political,
economic and philosophical analysis.
Plot to Sieze the White House [ca. 2001 via internet article] -
book on Gen. Smedley Butler's whistle-blowing on big business
plotters against FDR. In the 1930s Butler was our most popular
general. Agents of big business, including that of J.P.Morgan
and Reynolds Firearms, plotted a coup against FDR, like the
coups that brought Hitler and Mussolini to power at the same
time in Europe. They had half a million men ready to usurp power
from FDR. They asked Butler to lead the coup, because of his
popularity. He pretended to play along for a while, so he could
try to find who was behind it. Then he went to FDR and Congress
and told what happened. The Congressional Record recorded his
testimony. FDR planned to prosecute all of the big businesses
that were involved in helping Fascism before and during WW2
after the war ended, but he died too soon, apparently murdered
[Why else a closed casket?].
NSSM 200 [ca. 2001 via New Federalist] - memo by Henry Kissinger
promoting genocide in Africa. This is a secret very long
memorandum proposing that the U.S. needed to keep Africa
politically unstable and in poverty so rich countries would have
acces to its rich mineral resources.
Beatalltraffictickets.com [2003] - website on right to travel
without a license. As with taxes, license laws appear to be a
similar fraud by those in power. The right to travel by any
means that doesn't harm the public is real, but denied by

GOVERNMENT ABUSE AND THE RISE OF MILITIAS, By Walter Williams

About 2004, 12 members of an Arizona Militia, called the Vipers,
were arrested by federal agents for allegedly conducting
exercises using explosives in practice against government
agencies and local media. Williams asked, "Why has there been a
remarkable growth in anti-government militias?" He said, "The
Freemen aside, it is my impression that most militia members are
not common criminals, who rob, rape and murder. To the contrary,
at least the ones I've seen are working, churchgoing, patriotic
family men and women. They, like most other Americans, are
becoming increasingly fearful of their government. What
distinguishes them, misguided or not, is a willingness to
prepare to resist a government seemingly hell-bent on making a
mockery of our constitutional guarantees."

Rep. Billy Tauzin, who was instrumental in passing the new
Medicare prescription drug law, has resigned from his powerful
position of chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee
and is considering taking a new position as head of the lobbying
operation of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of
America, or PhRMA.
Watchdog groups have expressed concerns over a potential
conflict of interest. Tauzin was deeply involved in making
legislation involving drug benefits and the groups are concerned
that he was having discussions about his potential new job,
while still heading a committee that crafts legislation for the
same industry.
PhRMA represents major drug manufacturers such as Eli Lilly and
Co. and Merck & Co., and Tauzin has acknowledged interest in the
job.

5. MISEDUCATION
WHAT INFLUENCED MY VIEWS ON EDUCATION
I did well in grade school and high school and graduated second
highest of only 33. But I took the hardest courses and the
Valedictorian took easy ones. I loved learning things, but hated
the prison-like atmosphere of school since about the 3rd grade.
I hated being forced to do boring things, especially homework. I
learned things pretty quickly without taking notes much at all.
In college I didn't take notes either, but I couldn't keep up
with all the info and I got lower grades. I learned to take much
better notes over the years. I use my own shorthand. In 1969 I
got disillusioned with college and dropped most of my classes.
That left me with a lot of time, which I spent reading a lot of
science magazines. I learned more that way than from classes. I
joined the Air Force that year to avoid the draft. It was about
ten years later that I got interested in educational methods.
Here are literature that impressed me most.
[1980] Instead of Education - book by John Holt for
home-schooling. Holt described his own teaching efforts, in
which he tried to make learning fun and effective for students.
But he found that, no matter how well he explained things, most
kids learned poorly with little understanding. Finally he
realized the problem] was that kids cannot learn so well in a
prison-like environment. About all they can learn is how to be
good prisoners. When anyone is forced to be in a place, even if
it's called school, it's really a prison. Prison is not
conducive to learning much about how to live in a free society.
Holt later founded the magazine, Growing Without Schooling,
which had a lot of influence on the home-schooling movement.

It had many inspiring articles for improving kids' learning and
a national directory of home-schoolers.
[1980] The Continuum Concept - book by Jean Liedloff on natural
child rearing. This was one of the books sold by Holt's magazine
group. Liedloff lived for a while with South American Indians in
the jungle and felt like she was living with aliens from another
planet, because the people were always happy and the kids never
cried, or fought with each other, or misbehaved. Eventually it
occurred to her that it wasn't them who were aliens, but our own
society. It's us who have been reared with too much estrangement
or aloneness and we become fearful and always unhappy. She
offered ideas on how to improve child-rearing.
[1982] Children of Dreams, Children of Hope - book by Raymundo
Veras on curing mental retardation in children. Dr. Veras was
from Brazil. His son had a diving accident in which his neck was
broken and he became paralyzed. The Dr. brought him to the U.S.
to look for treatment. With prayer he "accidentally" found in
Philadelphia the Institutes for the Achievement of Human
Potential, which helped brain-injured kids to recover from all
kinds of mental problems. Dr. Veras was able to help his son a
lot and he started a similar treatment program in Brazil. He
found there that it was also able to help Down's Syndrome kids
to become normal and even superior in intelligence.
[1992] The Five Leonards Book - book by me for kids. I was
forced to write a book for a college children's literature class
I was taking. So I put this together. It has rhymes for all the
words that have gh, so kids can pronounce them right. It has a
perpetual calendar of my own invention. It has some geography.
It's five books in one. When I tried to write on a single
subject, I couldn't come up with much. So I got the idea to
combine several subjects together. When I did that, the project
went from painful to fun.
[2004] I started my website, codaplus.org [now here], on how to
be happy and prosperous. It's hard to believe the site has only
been up for a year. It seems like years. I met a webmaster in
St. Louis via a LaRouche meeting in 2003. Since he was willing
to put up a site for only $30/month, I had to accept the offer.
I include on the site 11 lessons [now 13] of recovery from
co-dependence and similar ways to get happy. Liedloff's ideas
are mentioned. So are Dr. Clancy McKenzie's. His research
supports Liedloff's ideas, showing that aloneness and abuse in
early childhood lead to autism, major depression, schizophrenia
and the like. He found that aloneness is often as traumatic for
young kids as is combat for soldiers and the trauma is basically
equivalent to PTSD, i.e. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
LEGALIZED CHILD ABUSE
There is much more abuse in society than we realize. All of us
are abusive to ourselves and others in ways we don't usually
think of. In order to end abuse and attain happiness in our
families and communities, we first must become aware of what is
abuse. Abuse is any careless harm done to the body or the mind.
Abuse hampers emotional maturation and it reinforces and
perpetuates abuse and public misery. The following article is
meant as a source of potential insight about abuse in one
institution, though nearly every institution is affected to some

The top 5 states for psychiatric drug coercion are: California,
New York, Georgia, Florida and Maryland.
More than 500 parents from across the nation have signed a
petition in support of federal protections after being coerced
into administering psychiatric drugs to their children,
according to Parents for a Label and Drug Free Education. The
grassroots parents' rights group wrote the petition in support
of "The Child Medication Safety Act" which would protect parents
and children against this coercion. In May, the U.S. House of
Representatives passed the Act by a landslide vote of 425 to
one.
Mrs. Patty Weathers, president of Parents for a Label and Drug
Free Education, says, "We realize that the Senate is extremely
busy now; however, hundreds of parents continue to report that
school personnel are forcing them to give their child powerful
psychiatric drugs. The government spends nearly $1 billion a
month to fight the war on drugs, yet millions of prescriptions
for cocaine-like stimulants are written for children each year
and government-funded schools are forcing kids to take them.
Children who have been forced onto these drugs have died.
Passage of the Child Medication Safety Act could save children's
lives." Mrs. Weathers' website, AbleChild.org lists the names of
parents who report
they've been coerced through schools to drug their child. Listed
by their city and state, it also cites the title of the school
personnel responsible for the coercion. The top five states for
drug coercion are California with 41 cases; New York, 36;
Georgia, 29; Florida, 26; and Maryland 25. Mrs. Weathers says
that the 500 signatures on her website reflect only a small
portion of the parents forced to drug their children, as the
only promotion for the petition has been through referral from
visitors to the website. Mrs. Weathers' own son, Michael, 8, was
forced onto psychiatric drugs through his New York school, only
to later find his problems stemmed from never being taught
phonics.

JOHN KENDALL ON THE SUZUKI METHOD - The following interview set
me up for a fall in 1996 by building up my hopes for teaching,
only to have them dashed 2 months later, when I started my
student teaching courses, but didn't finish. The main climax of
this interview is at the end, but there is more than one climax.
Interview with John Kendall, SIUE Music Teacher, about June 24,
1996, for Class CI 200, by Lloyd Kinder
L: When did you start teaching and how long have you been
retired?
J: I started teaching when I was 15 years old, ... so that means
I've been teaching for ... 60 years. That's long enough to get a
few ideas about it. I retired officially from the university in
1987, because at that time they had mandatory retirements at 70,
but I'm still teaching, so I'm not completely retired yet.
L: Have you taught other things besides music, or just music?
J: Well, I've taught what we called a humanities integrated
course for about 15 years in one college. It was an integrated
course involving visual arts, music, drama and literature. And I
enjoyed that tremendously, because it brought music into the
total sphere of activities, instead of being an isolated art.
... I started doing that in 1941, after I'd taught music for a
couple of years. ... I started experimenting with that course.
And then after the war, after I went to the second college, I
instituted a second course called "The Arts" and I taught that
from '46 to '60. ... I went right from my ... graduating at
Oberlin ... into a college teaching job, which is not the usual
pattern today.
L: How long had you played music before teaching it?
J: Well, yes, I started playing violin when I was 8. And
according to modern ideas that was pretty late. They begin kids
at 3 or 4 now.
L: Who or what influenced you toward music and teaching?
J: My mother was a fine singer and played piano, but she had a
very dear friend who played violin. He used to come out to our
house on Sunday afternoons and played violin with my mother
playing piano. ... He was a neighbor. ... They started sending
me to public school string class, which was taught by a trombone
player, who didn't know anything about strings at all. So they
could see that after 6 months of that I wasn't getting anywhere,
so they took me to a private teacher at the college in our town,
who gave me private lessons starting when I was 8. ... That was
in Kearney, Nebraska. That's where I grew up. That was one of
the old forts on the Oregon Trail.
L: How did you discover the Suzuki Method?
J: In 1958 I was attending a meeting of the American String
Teachers Association in Oberlin, my old Alma Mater. And after
the meeting was over, one of the teachers said, "Say, I have a
film here of some Japanese students playing. Would you like to
hear it?" So three of us went in and sat down in this darkened
room and listened to a film of 750 Japanese children playing a
very difficult Bach concerto. And I was very impressed, but sort
of skeptical about it.... I was the first American teacher to go
to Japan to study this. ... By February of '59 I had gotten ...
the two grants, [which] interestingly enough, were [from] the
Bach and Presser Foundations, both in Philadelphia.
L: Can you describe the Suzuki Method?
J: Well, Suzuki calls it the Mother tongue method, because he
says it's the same method which children all over the world use
to learn their native language. They learn it, not by reading,
not by a formal system, not by a set of rules, but by observing
and listening and by being in a language environment, where
they're encouraged to speak gradually and learn with their
parents. So he tried to simulate those same conditions in
teaching violin - [to] start early when the child's from the
ages of 2 till 6; his brain is increasing in size at a fantastic
rate; he's absorbing everything in his environment, including
his language, with great facility. And he does it by listening.
So Suzuki made a series of recordings of the pieces he wanted
the children to learn in sequential order. And they started
listening to those over and over the way they would a language.
Then he introduced a step by step method, always with an
environment of encouragement and the parents participating and
encouraging, and the results were quite phenomenal.
L: Is it the best method for learning music?
J: Well, I suppose, if you really believe in this idea, it's the
best method for learning anything. I mean, it's creating a
learning environment, a can't fail environment, and that's what
we're all trying to do in teaching.
L: What percent of people have musical genius potential?
J: 100 percent! That's Suzuki's idea. I said to him once, "Dr.
Suzuki, do you think you could take a kid off the streets of
London, or South Africa, or anywhere, and teach him to play,
let's say, the Vivaldi concerto:" He said, "Yes, I could, if I
could control the environment from the ages of 2 till 6." ... I
think it's closely related to learning other motor skills. But,
we'd have to say that music is much more than a motor skill -
emotional and personal aspects that aren't involved in a motor
skill.
L: Do you think [the Suzuki Method] should be tried in such
areas ... as math [and] reading?
J: Yeah, absolutely - and it is being experimented with. In
Japan they have a whole kindergarten school and there are
several articles by a math teacher who uses the Suzuki approach
to teaching math with considerable success.... I think
kindergarten was emphasized. ... I'm a strong believer in
Waldorf educational methods; ... the conditions are so conducive
to support group development.... But there's another thing to be
said about the Suzuki Method. It's not an isolated one-to-one
thing, ... but as an auxiliary thing, the Suzuki Method has
group performance and group rehearsals, which gives that sense
of collaboration and working together, which is a wonderful
support. And it helps create a confidence in public
presentation, which for an individual child is somewhat daunting
at times. When you get up and play the Vivaldi concerto with 20
or 30 or 50 kids, it's a real ... confidence experience. ...
Teacher training ... is one of the primary responsibilities of
our universities and I don't think they're doing their best at
all. I think our universities need to do a much better job of
training teachers.
L: And do you think something like the Suzuki Method could help
in teaching teachers?
J: Yes, I do. I think one of our big drives right now in the
Suzuki Association is to improve our teacher training and to set
up standards for them and to help them do observation and
experience their own performance.... And I think that constant
effort to develop and upgrade teaching is something that should
characterize every group of teachers. But it takes a lot of
inducements to keep a teacher going to improve their own work.

Every year approximately 200,000 die from prescription drug
reactions.
Another 80,000 die from medical malpractice.
[Combined, that's over 6 times as many as who die in traffic
accidents]
41,000 die in auto accidents.
What is wrong with our focus on the "drug war" when 200,000 die
each year from prescription drugs, yet approximately only 20,000
die as a result of illegal drug use? Billions of dollars go into
illegal drug issues in this country every year even though far
more are dying from legal drugs. Everyone is asking, "Where is
the FDA?" Busy approving another new drug? And how many more
will die from that one?
A two-year Los Angeles Times investigation published in
December, 2000 found that the seven drugs approved since 1993
have been withdrawn after reports of deaths and severe
side[-effects]. In the article written by Times Staff Writer
David Willam, it states, "The FDA approved each of those drugs
while disregarding danger signs or blunt warnings from its own
specialists. Then, after receiving reports of significant harm
to patients, the agency was slow to seek withdrawals."
Morton Mintz, a former Washington Post reporter, and a Nieman
Fellow who won the Raymond Clapper award for reporting the
thalidomide tragedy, published a book in 1965 entitled, THE
THERAPEUTIC NIGHTMARE. His warnings heeded then, and the
warnings coming from many other men of great integrity since
then, could have spared us the agony we have experienced from
the drug tragedies since that time and those we are engulfed in
today. He begins with, "Here we shall see that there have been
instances when our excessive trust in certain Corporate
Consciences has been rewarded with inadequately and even
fraudulently tested drugs, with useless drugs and inferior
versions of good drugs, with protraction of illness, and with
waste of our money. In order that sales may begin and continue,
regardless of whether we are healed and spared pain, evidence of
serious and even lethal effects has been withheld from the
responsible government agency and concealed from the medical
profession and the public." (p.xiv)
We wish to honor him here (and those who have followed in his
footsteps) in their unending efforts to warn us of these serious
problems associated with the drugs we have come to learn to
blindly trust. This site is to assist us in making sure that
trust is no longer a "blind" trust. We must take the
responsibility to educate ourselves about what we are putting
into our bodies and brains.
Some of the most popular drugs on the market today are those
that increase serotonin levels like the diet pills that were
just pulled from the market. Originally Fen-Phen & Redux were
thought to be so safe that 18 million people took the drugs. Now
we know that they were so dangerous that those who took even one
pill have been advised to have their hearts checked. If these
drugs could be among the most popular on the market and touted
as "the thing" for weight management for a two-year period,
leaving a backlash of victims that attorney's offices cannot
even begin to handle, what other mistakes will we wake up to
tomorrow? What are you taking right now that could be just as
dangerous or as damaging as these diet pills? What do you know
about the medication you are currently taking? What do you know
about the dangers of taking the drugs you are taking in
combination with one another? Even more frightening to ask is
"What does your doctor know or not know about the answers to
these questions?"
Drugs like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Effexor, Serzone,
Anafranil, etc. are some of the biggest money makers ever for
the pharmaceutical companies. Yet are you aware that the use of
Prozac among children from ages 6-12 went from 41,000 in 1995 to
203,000 in 1996. The number of new prescriptions written
increased almost 400% in just one year?!! This is a very
powerful mind-altering drug that has not been approved for use
in children and yet our children are popping it like candy! Just
Prozac's affect upon cortisol levels alone should frighten
parents to death. One 30mg dose has been shown to clearly double
the level of cortisol! (PROZAC PANACEA OR PANDORA?, p. 168)
Increased cortisol impairs the development and regeneration of
the liver, kidneys and muscles. It also retards linear growth.
How many parents are given that information? How many doctors
are aware of it themselves?
The study being used to gain FDA approval of this medication
demonstrates that the rate of mania (a terrible form of insanity
including symptoms of sexual compulsions, criminal behavior,
alcohol cravings, rages leading to domestic violence, delusions
of grandeur - often mistaken for increased self confidence, wild
spending and varied types of criminal behavior) among children
taking Prozac was three times higher than it is for adults.
Three out of 100 had to drop out of the study due to this
devastating complication which developed within a short eight
week trial! The most logical question to ask is "Why do this to
our children when there are many safer natural options that work
as well without serious side effects?"

FDA LINKS SSRIs TO SUICIDE IN KIDS
The hearings were wonderful!!!!!
As the FDA Advisory committee was reaching the conclusion of
their statement yesterday, I had to leave the room several times
to step out into the hallway to jump and shout for joy! BLACK
BOX WARNINGS!!!! We got black box warnings on ALL antidepressant
medications for children!!! I had begun to wonder if we would
ever see this day.
But beyond that, they have also agreed to study the violence
issue associated with antidepressants. And the Senate now wants
to begin their own investigation into these drugs!!!!!
So now, we have not only Congress, but the Senate as well,
looking into possible cover-up and criminal actions by all those
whose responsibility it was to protect the public, and most
especially our precious children who were to be our future.
What a bittersweet victory this has been in the warnings coming
so many years too late!

DRUG COMPANIES PAY OFF GOVERNMENT TO SELL MORE ANTI-PSYCHOTIC

The drug industry knows how to market their drugs. For the big
named drugs they spend billions of dollars on consumer
advertising, but to sell medicines that treat schizophrenia the
companies focus on a smaller group of customers, the state
officials who oversee treatment for patients with mental
illness. These patients make states among the largest buyers of
antipsychotic drugs.
Past evidence has shown, since the mid-1990s a group of major
drug companies had campaigned to convince state officials that a
new generation of drugs--with names like Risperdal, Zyprexa and
Seroquel--was superior to older and much cheaper antipsychotics.
The campaign has led a dozen states, including Texas, to adopt
guidelines for treating schizophrenia, which in turn made it
almost impossible for doctors to prescribe anything but the new
drugs, which resulted in transforming the new medicines into
blockbusters.
To adopt the guidelines, major drug companies wined and dined
different state officials and urged them to follow the lead of
Texas, according to evidence found. Evidence written in a report
also showed that in May 2001, as Pennsylvania was deciding
whether to adopt the Texas guidelines, a pharmaceutical company
paid $4,000 to fly two mental health officials to New Orleans,
where they ate at an elegant restaurant with the company
executives. These reports show a lot more money was given out to
other mental health officials at different times.
With all this evidence floating around, it started to stir up
some concerns about the drug companies new generation of the
drugs, called atypical antipsychotics, used to treat a variety
of mental illnesses. The concerns were coming from a joint panel
made up of the American Diabetes Association, American
Psychiatric Association, American Association of Clinical
Endocrinologists, and the North American Association for the
Study of Obesity who said, mental patients who take these drugs
may be increasing their risk for obesity, diabetes and high
cholesterol--all which lead to heart disease.
The joint panel has issued a statement asking doctors to screen
all patients on these medications for signs that could lead to
any of these diseases, stating there is considerable evidence
from studies conducted.

DR. MERCOLA'S COMMENT: These new antipsychotics are loaded with
side effects. Four medical groups, including the American
Psychiatric Association, have warned that the new drugs could
increase a patient's risk of heart disease by increasing:
Obesity, Diabetes, High cholesterol: This NY Times article
details how the drug companies have manipulated and influenced
state governments to purchase even more of these expensive
side-effect riddled drugs. Questions have multiplied about the
many ways that the drug industry tries to influence the medical
information that determines its products' success or failure.
This makes perfect sense to me. Drugs are in no way, shape or
form the answer for mental illness. They may control symptoms,
but they do so at quite a significant price, and one that many
people are not willing to pay. Why exchange one set of horrible
side effects for diabetes? This makes no sense to me, unless you
are the drug company--and then it makes perfect sense.
Fortunately, we do have some natural options. Dr. Stoll is the
director of the psychopharmacology research lab at Boston's
McLean Hospital and assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard
Medical School. He discusses the use of omega-3 extensively in
his book The Omega-3 Connection. He reviews the new evidence
supporting the use of omega-3 oils for mental illness.
The book is excellent, but Dr. Stoll is seriously misinformed
about cod liver oil. This is especially true in terms of
schizophrenia, which seems to respond particularly well to
therapeutic doses of vitamin D.
A study I posted in 2002 strongly connected the dots from not
enough sunshine and subsequent vitamin D to prevent
schizophrenia. Optimal exposure to sunlight can provide enough
vitamin D, but for most of us the winter provides a major lack
of sun exposure and our levels fall in the dirt. Fortunately,
cod liver oil can be used to replace this level to near ideal
ranges. My favorite source of both omega-3 and vitamin D happens
to be Carlson's cod liver oil. If you can't find this brand in

Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs Another Disaster - Dr. Wright

DRUGS AND DOCTORS MAY BE THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN U.S., By
Joseph Mercola, D.O. - At one time, the main title of my Web
site read: Doctors are the Third leading Cause of Death. Many of
you reading this have read or seen this in many places other
than my Web site. This article, available on my home page, was
widely circulated on the Internet and was one of the reasons why
my Web site was initially popular. What you may not realize is
that I am the one who made this analysis and popularized it. The
original study was published by Dr. Starfield, a full professor
of public health at the most prestigious hospital in the United
States, Johns Hopkins. Her study never had the headline in it,
but instead listed the published research documenting the
various causes of deaths that doctors contributed to. I simply
added them all up and compared them to cardiovascular diseases
and cancer and came up with the above headline, which was widely
circulated on the Internet.
Interestingly, when I contacted Dr. Starfield by e-mail she
disagreed with the headline I had come up with. She did not feel
that doctors were the third leading cause of death, but thought
they were the number one cause of death because of their failure
to inform their patients about the truth of health. Now this
might be a bit too harsh, as, even if people understand health
truth, they have freedom of choice and can choose to use sugar,
soda and drugs (legal and illegal) to compromise their health
and longevity.
However, JAMA actually published a study a year earlier that
could support that doctors may be the leading cause of death in
the United States. This finding is more of a speculation though,
so below I have provided some other studies to support this
assertion.
In 1994, an estimated 2 million (1,721,000 to 2,711,000)
hospitalized patients had serious adverse drug reactions (ADRs)
and 106,000 (76,000 to 137,000) had fatal ADRs, making these
reactions between the fourth and sixth leading cause of death.

Medication-related problems (MRP) continue to occur at a high
rate in ambulatory hemodialysis (HD) patients. Medication-dosing
problems (33.5 percent), adverse drug reactions (20.7 percent),
and an indication that was not currently being treated (13.5
percent) were the most common MRP. [Of] 5,373 medication orders
[that] were reviewed ... a [medication-related problem] MRP was
identified every 15.2 medication exposures [i.e. one out of
every 15 uses of medication produce significant problems]. Nurs

In 2002, 16,176 adverse drug reaction reports were received, of
which 67 percent related to reactions categorized as 'serious.'

Medication administration errors (MAEs) were observed in two
departments of a hospital for 20 days. The medication
administration error rate was 14.9 percent. Dose errors were the
most frequent (41 percent) errors, followed by wrong time (26
percent) and wrong rate errors. Ten percent of errors were
estimated as potentially life-threatening, 26 percent
potentially significant and 64 percent potentially minor.
Serious and Fatal Drug Reactions in US Hospitals - Drug-related
morbidity and mortality have been estimated to cost more that
$136 billion a year in United States. These estimates are higher
than the total cost of cardiovascular care or diabetes care in
the United States. A major component of these costs is adverse

were certainly or probably drug-related. Incidence figures based
on death certificates only may seriously underestimate the true

In a survey of over 28,000 patients, ADRs [bad drug reactions]
were considered to be the cause of 3.4 percent [one out of 28]
of hospital admissions. Of these, 187 ADRs were coded as severe.
Gastrointestinal complaints (19 percent) represented the most
common events, followed by metabolic and hemorrhagic [bleeding]
complications (nine percent). The drugs most frequently
responsible for these ADRs were diuretics, calcium channel
blockers, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and digoxin. J

BOOKS BY ANNE WILSON SCHAEF
These next 8 book reviews are of Anne Schaef's books. I have
read Co-dependence and When Society Becomes an Addict. The
former helped confirm my suspicion in the late 1980s that our
society is seriously unhealthy. By our society I mean most of
the world, but especially cultures based on greed and
domination. Jean Liedloff's The Continuum Concept and John
Holt's Instead of Education had previously given me my initial
clues about society's ill health. They showed that how we raise
and educate kids is abusive. Immanuel Velikovsky's Worlds in
Collision, in its chapter on Collective Amnesia, also had
provided me notions that the original trauma for humanity came
from global catastrophes in ancient times. And humanity seems to
have insanely become habituated to the trauma, so that it has
repeated ongoing self-made catastrophes ever since then in the
form of wars and greed. To live without trauma apparently came
to feel unnatural to humanity. Like Liedloff and Holt, Schaef
offers helpful ways for possibly overcoming our urges for
trauma. Remembering the past is usually part of the healing
process in my opinion. - LK

to describe a way of understanding ourselves that goes beyond
psychology as we know it. It is my attempt to articulate a
theory and practice of healing that is integrated with a
holographic scientific paradigm.

attempted to improve the human condition and truly help people.
Unfortunately, their helpfulness is limited by the very concept
of science on which they are built. As many scientists are

Co-Dependence: Misunderstood, Mistreated [1992]
-- According to Schaef, there are "millions of persons in this
country affected by the diseases of addictions and co-dependence
and these diseases are reaching epidemic proportions...producing
early death and unhappy, destructive, and destroyed persons."
What is co-dependence? Originally a term for the disease that
affects people involved in a close relationship with an
alcoholic or a chemically dependent person, co-dependence,
Schaef proposes, is just one form of what she calls "the
addictive process," an underlying generic, primary disease whose
assumptions, beliefs, and lack of spiritual awareness are openly
supported by the society in which we live.
In CO-DEPENDENCE, Schaef discusses the impact her theory will
have on the fields of mental health, chemical dependency, family
therapy, and the women's movement. And she traces the history
and development of the concept of co-dependence and discusses
its often confusing, overlapping definitions.

-- Excerpts from the author's Introduction: "As a society, we
are involved, I believe, in a very crucial process of learning
about the range, focus, and impact of addictions on individuals,
families, institutions, and entire cultures. We are beginning to
understand that since we live in an addictive society, we have
all been exposed to and trained into an addictive process. This
addictive process is not a normal state for the human organism.
It is something that we have learned.
"We have also learned that addictions rarely, if ever, exist in
isolation. After we have faced off against our favorite
addiction, the one that is killing us or destroying our lives
the fastest, and have attained a modicum of sobriety with that
addiction, we discover our next most favorite, the one that is
killing us the next fastest. We must move in our recovery from
one addiction to another for two major reasons: first, we have
not recognized and treated the underlying addictive process, and
second, we have not accurately isolated and focused upon the
specific addictions.
"In my experience, the chemical and/or ingestive addictions have
been the first to be confronted both historically and
individually. Then, in order for recovery to proceed, one must
also confront the process addictions in which one is addicted to
a process. These are addictions, for example, to work, money,
sex, relationships, romance, religion, exercise--in which the
focus is not upon the ingestion of a chemical or other
substance.... We must understand them and treat them with as
much concern as we do ingestive addictions."
Native Wisdom For White Minds - [1995]
-- What is a white mind? As Anne Wilson Schaef learned during
her travels throughout the world among Native Peoples, anyone
raised in modern Western society or by Western culture can have
a white mind. White minds are trapped in a closed system of
thinking that sees life in black and white, either/or terms;
they are hierarchical and mechanistic; they see nature as a
force to be tamed and people as objects to be controlled with no
regard for the future.
This worldview is not shared by most Native Peoples, and in this
provocative book, Anne Wilson Schaef shares the richness poured
out to her by Native Americans, Aborigines, Africans, Maoris,
and others. In the words of Native Peoples themselves, we come
to understand Native ideas about our earth, spirituality,
family, work, loneliness, and change. For in every area of our
lives we have the capacity to transcend our white minds--we
simply need to listen with open hearts and open minds to other
voices, other perceptions, other cultures.
When Society Becomes An Addict [1987]
-- From the book's introduction: "Our society is deteriorating
at an alarming rate. As we watch the news and read the
newspapers, we are increasingly made aware of corruption in high
places, financial collapse, and a lack of morality in settings
ranging from preschools to meat packing plans. Our planet is
being destroyed by acid rain and pollution. Hunger and wars rage
over the planet.
"As a society, we are responding not with action but with a
widespread malaise. The market for antidepressants has never
been better. Apathy and depression have become synonymous with
adjustment. Rather than looking for ways to change, to save
ourselves, we are becoming more conservative, more complacent,
more defensive of the status quo.
"Those few individuals who notice and draw attention to these
growing problems are met with massive denial. When they run for
public office, they are not elected. When they confront us with
what they know, they are ignored, dismissed, or discredited."
Women's Realty: An Emerging Female System In A White Male
Society [1992]
--This book is about a reality--a reality perceived, explored,
and expressed by women whenever they are free to do so without
fear. It is about who we are as women. When we understand and
accept who we are, we become in turn more understandable and
accepted.
This book has three purposes: liberation, sharing, and
communication. It is intended to liberate women from an
unnecessary oppression based on myths. It is intended to share
and legitimate what all women know--some of which they are
willing to admit to themselves, and some of which they are
willing to admit to others. It is intended to communicate in the
"female idiom."
The Addictive Organization - co-authored with Diane Fassel -
[1988]
-- Even though there is a plethora of books about organizations
and corporate life and millions of dollars each year are spent
on consultants and packages designed to "fix up" what is wrong
with organizations, corporations continue to search desperately
for models that will reverse a slipping economy and enliven a
poorly producing work force. Individuals look forward to
weekends so that they can recover from their "crazy-making"
experiences at work only to find that they must face the same
dynamics on Monday. Often, persons who come from dysfunctional
families find their organizations repeating the same patterns
they learned in their families. Even though these patterns feel
familiar, they do not feel healthy. Though consulting packages
seem to alleviate some problems for a few days or a week, those
same problems reemerge with even greater force and tenacity.
Even after our favorite committees have had workshops on
communications skills, breakdowns in communication, dishonesty,
isolation, anger, and withdrawals continue. What is going on?

Any position of power carries with it the temptation to abuse
that power. The abuse of power typically disguises itself as
something noble. But the root of power abuse is woundedness.
In all my years as a journeyer, psychotherapist, and spiritual
midwife, I rarely heard anyone address the epidemic abuse of
power, disguised as healing and spirituality. When I have known
it to be addressed, it has usually been allotted only a few
sentences in a seminar, audiotape, article, or at most a chapter
in a book.
I experienced misuse of power personally; and second-hand in
many ways, including viewing videos featuring entertainers,
writers, medical healers, psychics, and others, purporting to
have the training and skill to work with people as spiritual
healers. They may teach distortions of truth; they may teach
truth in a manner that is abusive; they may model for thousands
of people the abuse of power and people in the name of something
righteous.
No one is immune. You could be harmed by abuse of power. You
could even misuse power yourself. Learn to recognize signs of
misuse and abuse of power in order to protect yourself from
becoming either a victim or an abuser of power. If you are a
leader, [my] workshop can help you come to healthy and wholesome
use of the power intrinsic to your position of leadership. It
can help you to heal, if you have been injured by inappropriate
use of power in recovery, therapeutic, or spiritual circles.
What you learn can be carried into other areas of your life:
home, school, church, business, community.
Become part of the human evolution toward taking responsibility
for effects of even the unconscious wounding our human condition
leads us to cause.
Any position of power carries with it the temptation to abuse
that power. The abuse of power typically disguises itself as
something noble, even though the root of power abuse is
woundedness.
I have felt called for years to bring my gifts of knowing and
clear sight to the task of healing "abuse disguised" in our
world. Those who know my work as a psychotherapist, spiritual
midwife, workshop leader, trainer and supervisor, know me as a
passionate and grounded authority on this subject.
Now, filled with these years of experience, I am ripe to help in
the healing of this tragedy in our world. Our world needs this
healing, since September 11, more than ever before. Of course
consciously we all want the terrorism to end. We do not all
understand that, only if we deal with the abuses of power within
ourselves, we will be able to make a truly positive
contribution, rather than secretly feeding psychically the
monster of terrorism in our world. And with the recent
revelations of abuse of power in the Catholic Church, and in
other arenas in our world, the call for The Emperor Has Nothing
On At All Workshop grows louder and more insistent.
I also envision The Emperor Has Nothing on At All Workshop as a
summons to leaders in all areas of life. It will inspire them to
meet, face, and heal themselves when tempted to misuse or abuse
their power. Ultimately, my hope and vision is that it will be a

The Power Cycle explains how power abusers typically attempt to
maintain monopoly on power and prevent others sharing power. The
power cycle is observed in domestic violence in a small way, but
in major institutions in a big way. That includes especially big
business and government. I explained in Lesson 11, I think, why
abuse is more likely in positions of greater power than in those
of lesser power. I have yet to explain ritual abuse and secrecy.
It is widely known that plenty of people are afflicted with
megalomania. It's well-known that there is much secrecy in
government and in big business. It's also known that big
business is a special interest that holds far too much influence
over government, to its own benefit and at the expense of the
public interest.
It seems to be largely forgotten that our government was created
for the public interest, not private interests, as is explained
in the Preamble to the Constitution. It seems to be generally
denied that much of big business and other groupings of the
upper class, the wealthy, are corrupt with greed, racism,
classism and power madness. Those who grow up in families of
privilege and power come to expect that these are their rights
and their duties, that only they know how to run things for the
public good, that what's good for them is good for the public.
It seems to be seldom considered that domestic violence and
other abuse are as much a part of upper class families as any
other. After all, it's not often that we hear of the wealthy
being prosecuted for crimes or misdemeanors. In reality, abuses
may easily be more widespread in the upper class, because of the
greater privacy they maintain and because of the greater power
they wield. They have a wide choice of options on how to
exercise their power, including very secretive ways that prevent
abuses being easily discovered. And the major media that they
own are paid to divert suspicion of criminal abuses away from
themselves and onto the less or least powerful.
It is not well known that ritual abuse is perpetrated on many
people each year. This is abuse that involves torture, sex
abuse, or murder in a ritualistic or ceremonial way. Such abuse
appears often to be used as a means to increase loyalty to the
group and to exercise mind control over the members, as cults
do, with fear, guilt and possibly an evil kind of pleasure in
observing, or participating in, sadism, degradation, or killing.
Of the first hundred books from a search on ritual abuse at
amazon.com, 39 appear to be actually about ritual abuse and
acknowledge it as a serious problem. 15 appear to deny that it
exists or that it is serious. The rest appear to be mostly about
sex abuse and similar abuse. There are several internet sites
that explain ritual abuse in detail. These books and sites were
reviewed in the previous chapter, "Addiction to Trauma." Many
people are superstitious and follow rituals as a way to gain
various benefits and these rituals can be very abusive of
someone, especially children, even their own.
ENDING THE POWER CYCLE
NCE feels that only through confession of societal and personal
wrong-doing [repentance] can the person and society transform
for the better. She says she is committed to aiding all people's
empowerment in shared power partnerships for world peace and
justice. Following is a summary review of her explanation of the
Power Cycle and How to End it.
Authoritarians seek to keep others subordinate. The changing
relationship between authoritarians and those seeking to share
power is called the power cycle.
The power cycle involves 5 stages:
1. Authoritarians ignore the oppressed;
2. They trivialize the oppressed;
3. They ridicule the oppressed;
4. After the oppressed begin caucusing, authoritarians try
tokenism; and finally
5. They seek to eliminate the oppressed, or seek to eliminate
the institutions or processes that tend to empower the
oppressed.
1. In stage 1 authoritarians ignore the oppressed as long as
nothing comes to their attention as a possible threat or
concern.
2. The oppressed usually have some indirect power, but not
direct power.
Authoritarians seek to denigrate any indirect power of the
oppressed by calling it manipulative and illegitimate. They also
trivialize the oppressed by calling them ignorant, though
authoritarians are the more ignorant. Patriarchal societies keep
authoritarians in ignorance of conditions of the oppressed,
which leads to crises, due to intolerable deprivation among the
oppressed.
Authoritarians trivialize through lack of full attention, or
describing the oppressed in childish terms, or treating them as
if they're immature. Being trivialized intimidates some of them.
3. Authoritarians ridicule subordinates to prevent them from
sharing power.
Ridicule often intimidates subordinates to avoid using power in
their own way.
Ridicule is violence. Authoritarians assume subordinates will
want all the power, rather than to share power. When
authoritarians ridicule, how can one avoid a one-down or one-up
position? One can say: It's only fair that everyone share power
without trying to have more than their fair share; isn't it? The
key for the oppressed is to believe in oneself, not in the
ridicule.
4. When trivialized and ridiculed, it is best for the oppressed
to caucus with peers. Caucuses tend to frighten authoritarians.
To minimize this, they can offer to let authorities to listen
in. Explain that the purpose in meeting is to support each
other, since authoritarians are unable to provide the needed
support.
Despite legislation there is still much segregation and
discrimination, due to fear of takeovers. The token stage is
dangerous for the oppressed. It can lead to efforts to eliminate
the perceived threat of a take-over.
5. When there is conflict in a group, the least powerful is
usually pressured to give in or leave. No one can be given
power, but the oppressed can be allowed or encouraged to take
power. The oppressed must claim power and authorities must
relinquish some power and avoid the power cycle. Everyone
involved must accept responsibility for working on shared
partnership.

Ms. Everist says that 3 important themes in Man's fall from the
Garden of Eden were: "They hid themselves (Gen. 3:8). They were
afraid (Gen. 3:l0). They blamed (Gen. 3:12-13)." She suggests
that these traits have plagued humanity ever since. "American
civil religion has no room for confession and atonement, only
for chosenness, glory and pursuit of happiness." She notes the
hypocricy of "U.S. pursuit of its own happiness at the expense
of others." Churches that play along "deprive their 'audiences'
of the power to deal with the real challenges of a violent
society." She references the book of Acts chapter 2 in
explaining that sharing power with others does not reduce our
own power but increases it. The chapter shows that it is
possible to share "all things in common" thus reducing poverty
and discord. Her advice for ending abuse then seems to be for
each person and group to end pride, to confess wrongs, to make
amends or restitution for those wrongs and to share power with
all members.
I'm sure she would also agree with Emoto's findings in Hidden
Messages from Water [and from Jesus' gospel] that Love,
Appreciation and Apology are important ingredients to a healthy
society.
