Looking at the huge sign in stamfordman's picture, how on earth
is anyone supposed to glean any useful information from it while
driving along? The recommendation in TSRGD is for a maximum of
seven words on information signs. This is another case of too
much information.

I think the Tennyson road sign is a red herring, the Council
haven't brought it up and it doesn't apply to the location where
the OP parked because there's a termination bar showing the end
of the area it applies to. It may well be a daft/wrong sign, but
it's not relevant to this case.
I think a more promising angle is the council's failure to
consider and lack of applicable evidence. The rejection contains
irrelevant stuff about bays (the OP wasn't in a bay) and makes a
claim that "details of event days are displayed on the entry
signs to the controlled parking zone", which is unlikely to be
true. I'd fight on, making it clear that you require proof that
the controlled parking zone sign you passed when entering the
zone (is this the huge one in Stamfordman's image?) did have
"details of event days" on it when you passed it. I think the
Council are unlikely to be able to prove this.

No it's not a red herring. It's a single yellow line timeplate
as it cannot apply to a double yellow and is a few feet away.

As per stamfordman, the relevant part of the definition of a CPZ
is:
an area:
in which every part of every road is subject to a prohibition
indicated by single or double yellow lines or single or double
yellow kerb markings (except where parking spaces have been
provided, where entrance to or exit from the road is made, where
there is a prohibition or restriction on waiting, stopping,
loading or unloading indicated by a different sign or where
there is a crossing....
'except where....there is a prohibition on waiting....indicated
by a different sign..'.
Which seems to apply here.
An intra-zone yellow sign takes priority and IMO the CPZ sign
must be read as:
No waiting on single yellow lines on event days between ** and
** except for those SYL 'indicated by a different sign'.

But it does not "seem to apply here"! The T-bar at the end of
the double yellow lines is where the restriction written on the
sign ends. The fact that there is something ridiculous written
on the sign does not overrule the meaning of the T-bar.

No need to complicate this. Single yellows in a CPZ are
controlled by zone entry signs, unless they have their own
timeplate.
Here there is one very near the line that is more than enough to
mislead.
One case from a few years ago but I expect it's pretty much the
same.

Reasons
Although there are special arrangements in relation to the event
days in the locality the appellant was entitled when parking to
rely on the yellow plate posted probably some 5 yards away from
where his car was at the time of ticketing on single yellow
line.
I have looked closely at Google Streetview with him and studied
his photographs and his case is a strong one. I have thought
perhaps that the patrolling officer inadvertently missed seeing
the sign which encouraged the appellant to park where recorded.
I have allowed the appeal on the basis that the appellant quite
reasonably concluded that the yellow line where he was parked
was governed by the nearby yellow plate which simply stated
7am-7pm. When ticketed it was after 7pm and although it was a
match day the yellow signage as photographed by the appellant
did notify parking was permissible when the appellant parked
outside the white door of 2B.
It has always been the case that in regulated zones nearby
yellow plates override the zone hours. These yellow plates may
indicate greater or lesser restrictions than that the zone ones,
effectively they take precedence.
For these reasons the Council evidence has not persuaded me any
contravention occurred.
I have thus recorded the appeal as allowed.
