Exceed variable speed limit on M1
By: Alexander Date: September 28, 2025, 8:34 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
[justify]I was flashed on M1 between J18-19 and immediately
checked my speedometer, which confirmed that I was travelling
only 49mph on the 50mph limit. So I assumed that it must have
been a different car that was flashed. However, I did receive a
letter for speeding. See attached proposal.

Apparently you were doing 57, not 49.

If you want to challenge the allegation you will have to decline
the fixed penalty offer and plead not guilty in court.
There you will have to cast doubt on the reliability of the
equipment used to measure your speed. The police will produce
evidence to show it was measured by an approved device operated
correctly. Do you feel able to do that?
The cost of failure is high. You will pay a fine of half a
week’s net income, a surcharge of 40% of that fine and
prosecution costs of around £650. No change out of £1k for most
       people.
You my find that the choice has already been made for you as
your fixed penalty offer expired last Tuesday.

It's quite possible you had decelerated before looking at your
       speedo - it's not unusual.
Have you seen the photos? (The system will distinguish the
offending vehicle so it's unlikely the 'wrong' vehicle was
       identified)
