TFL’s 60+ Oyster card
By: Korting Date: July 25, 2025, 10:58 am
---------------------------------------------------------
a friend of mine is trying to apply for a 60+ Oyster card which
she will be able to use on her birthday which is in a couple of
weeks, however the TFL website appears to not work and it is
near on impossible to get hold of TFL on their phone number.
I understand that this is becoming increasingly common.
Does anyone know of a work around for this?

What is the legal position if TFL's website doesn't allow her to
apply. She should be getting free travel on and after her 60th
birthday, can she claim compensation from TFL for journeys made
after that time?

No is the simple answer. You must have a valid ticket to travel
even if it's for free. I doubt you'd get a refund from TfL for
anything!

You can only apply for the card 14 days before birthday.
I've always found TFL helpful for the many cards we've had for
various ages and general Oyster cards (they also helped me get
back about £160 stored on a number of old cards/accounts).

I've just been in touch with TFL regarding ulez charges on a
compliant vehicle. emailing was to total waste of time. one
phone call with a very pleasant and extremely helpful and
knowledgeable young lady sorted it.
I suggest you persist with the phone option.

Just browsing back through this thread, does the lady concerned
live in London as that's a requirement for getting an over-60s
Oyster card. Over 65 outside London get the English
concessionary free pass which is also valid on TfL buses. You
must tap in when boarding the us.
The majority of Oyster cards are being phased out as bank cards
now have the capability to access the Oyster system and offer
the same maximum fare limits on a daily basis.

Too late now, but to get a Freedom Pass - which is what I assume
the Op means - you need to apply to london Councils, not TfL.

The Freedom Pass is not issued until you reach State Pension age
(currently 66) and only then do you apply to London Councils for
the Freedom Pass.
For residents of London Boroughs TfL provides free bus and tube
etc travel from age 60 by issuing them with a TfL Oyster 60+
card. I believe that is the card OP is referring to. You have to
apply to TfL for that, it's nothing to do with London Councils.
It runs until you are 66 when it is replaced by the London
Councils Freedom Pass.
As OP hasn't come back I assume the problem was solved but for
anyone else reading the thread this is the TfL page to apply for
the Oyster 60+ card. I've not heard of any particular problems
with it but I guess any site can be having a bad IT day
sometimes.

Just to add a different point, OP says the TFL website appears
not to work. This is vague. It would be more helpful to know
what exactly is going wrong. But perhaps, as was pointed out,
this isn't really a legal question!
