Red-light camera offence – unclear stop-line evidence and white
       van nearby
   DIR By: Mindless

       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hi everyone,
I’ve recently received a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP)
for an alleged red-light offence in London.
The alleged offence occurred on 31/07/2026 at approximately
10:34, in the A13/Renwick Road area near Barking.
I have reviewed the photographic evidence provided with the NIP.
The photos show my blue car, but I’m struggling to see clear
evidence that my vehicle had actually crossed the white stop
line while the light was red.
There was also a white van nearby, which is visible in the
sequence/photos, and I'm wondering whether its position could
potentially affect the interpretation of the images or the
       camera's view.
The position of my vehicle relative to the stop line isn't
particularly clear to me from the photographs provided. I also
haven't been provided with any video footage.
I understand that the key issue is whether my vehicle crossed
the stop line after the red signal was illuminated, rather than
simply where the vehicle was positioned afterwards.
For anyone familiar with UK red-light camera enforcement:
Can the police normally provide additional/video evidence if the
initial photographs don't clearly show the vehicle crossing the
       stop line?
How important is it that the photographic evidence clearly
establishes the vehicle's position relative to the stop line?
Could the white van nearby have any relevance to interpreting
       the photographs?
Has anyone successfully challenged a red-light allegation where
the supplied photographs didn't clearly establish that the stop
       line was crossed?
Would you recommend requesting the full photographic/video
evidence before deciding how to proceed?

       There isn't any video.

You won't have been provided the evidential quality photos but
the 2 snaps are all they have.

       Fundamental to prove the offence.

Looking at the photos we have it looks like the van triggered
the camera. Two snaps are taken - one to show the offending
vehicle breaching the white line and another showing it was
moving. (The snaps clearly show this for the van)
The van may have received a NIP too.

They won't provide anything else short of court.
The RLC records which lane(s) have triggered the camera (by
buried sensors). When processing the snaps the operator may
       have used the wrong lane.
       See what others think...

       I agree.
The photos clearly show the van had moved but seem to confirm
       your car remained stationary.
Might be worth a "puzzled" call to the ticket office to
establish why they are considering prosecuting you.
Bear in mind that unless they advise you to the contrary (and it
might still be worth doing so even if they do) you must respond
to the request for driver's details.

       I agree with NewJudge.
Whilst it looks like you've stopped whilst over the stop line,
you remained stationary whilst the van jumped the light.

       Hmmm...
I'm not convinced either of the photos posted by the OP show
that any part of his car has crossed the stop line. His car
looks to me to be behind the stop line.
And neither photo shows his car has moved. Only the white van
       has moved.
Of course there may be other photos but I'd think it bad form
for the ticket office to supply photos showing no evidence of an
offence if they have others that do...

Yes and They have cancelled this ticket today saying it a
       anomaly in the system ;D

The only other possibility is the OP *did* trigger the camera at
some later time (say they went whilst the light was still red)
and they've sent the wrong photos...
But the camera only snaps twice per trigger. (Once over the
line and usually around 0.5s later)
Obviously, they are under no obligation to provide photos at all
       at this stage...

For the sake of completeness, for evidential purposes, and in
the context of fixed red light cameras, if the photos don't show
that the car has moved, it matters not one jot whether it was
stopped beyond the line - the prosecution must prove that some
(any) part of the vehicle moved forwards across the line while
       the red light was showing.

Yes, and it would be difficult to prove that in some cases such
as this one unless they take a picture from the front as well.

Have you got that in writing? I'd hate to see you served with a
Failure to Furnish prosecution just because the camera people
       said it was cancelled.
